In the research data life cycle, scientific repositories support scientists in publishing and validating datasets. The ecosystem of scientific data repositories (i.e. listed via re3data.org) consists of a large variety of available categories and types, including discipline specific, interdisciplinary and institutional ones, and mixtures thereof. With this heterogeneity comes large variation in terms of data and metadata standards, APIs, file formats, licenses, archival- and publication guidelines, terms of re-use, and others. This is also a reason why a search across multiple repositories is a time consuming task to be carried out by researchers who want to re-use data, but are unsure where to look for it.
The Leibniz Data Manager (LDM), accessible at https://service.tib.eu/ldmservice/ increases the availability and re-use of scientific digital objects and their metadata with the following features:
To search and explore research data across various repositoriesTo preview data in different interfaces, e.g. via tables, via audio-visual material like AutoCAD files or 2D and 3D data, or via live programming code (Jupyter Notebook(s)).To empower the semantic interoperability of metadata by mapping harvested metadata to DCAT format and providing RDF serializations.Allows the installation of customized and local LDM distributions with open source code through distribution in a docker container.In sum, LDM offers a simple, small-scale and open software distribution, which can connect digital repositories in a way such that datasets and other scientific objects will stay in their respective repositories, with LDM providing an integrated view of the data sets archived by these repositories. Scientists can understand the information contained in digital objects, strengthening, thus, scientific transparency by following the FAIR principles.
Czech libraries have been digitizing historical and modern library collections since the mid-1990s. Approximately 4 million pages are digitized every single year. In 2017 the amendment to the Copyright Act of Czech republic was approved that allowed the National Library of the Czech Republic to conclude license agreements valid for all Czech libraries to publish so called works unavailable on the market on the internet. Subsequently in 2019, a five-year license agreement was concluded to guarantee free access to the books published in the Czech Republic by the end of 2007 and periodicals published by 2010. The payment of for this access licenses is paid from the state budget through the National Library of the Czech Republic, which allows to use these services to all libraries and their registered users to read the displayed documents. During the COVID pandemic situation, when libraries and bookstores were closed, even the full opening of the digital libraries was agreed including the latest publications. The service was freely available to the university students, teachers and researchers. Publishers received adequate financial compensation from the state budget to support such an important service. This paper is aimed to introduce the experience with all the process aspects, especially contractual security and the negotiations with collective copyright holders and publishers. The technical solutions is running on the basis of the Kramerius system, which is developed in the close cooperation of the Library of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, the National Library of the Czech Republic and the Moravian Regional Library.
Wikipedia and Academic Libraries: A Global Project contains 19 chapters by 52 authors from Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Netherlands, Nigeria, Scotland, Spain, and the United States. The chapters in this book are authored by both new and longtime members of the Wikimedia community, representing a range of experiences.
The presentation will argue that the cataloguing code RDA – Resource Description and Access is a tool for finally leaving cataloguing as we use to do in the card catalogue - even though we have had online catalogues for years - and that RDA is a step towards finally embracing the possibilities of online mediation of library resources. The presentation will include a short review of some the changes in the new version of RDA - both pros and cons. Also the presentation will argue that a successful adoption of RDA requires international perspective on the code as well as international cooperation in order to get a mutual understanding of the content, improve the content and make further development of the content in the direction of a truly international code – accepted, used and understood in many diverse libraries. The presentation will refer to EURIG – European RDA Interest Group – as an example of international cooperation.
DINI-zertifizierte Repositorien sind mit ihren standardisierten Metadaten und Schnittstellen eine wertvolle Quelle für Datenanalysen im Bereich des wissenschaftlichen Publizierens. Im Hands-On-Lab erlernen die Teilnehmenden von Mitgliedern der DINI-AG Elektronisches Publizieren, wie sie mit offenen Werkzeugen Metadaten aus diesen standardisierten Repositorien gewinnen und beispielsweise für statistische Analysen nachnutzen können.Das Hands-On-Lab beginnt mit einer kurzen Einführung in das DINI-Zertifikat und den zugrundeliegenden Kriterienkatalog mit besonderem Fokus auf die Anforderungen zu Metadaten und Schnittstellen. Die Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer erarbeiten anschließend gemeinsam mit Mitgliedern der Arbeitsgruppe Fragestellungen und erproben offene Werkzeuge (Open Refine, Catmandu, R), mit denen sich Metadaten aus DINI-zertifizierten Repositorien für datengestützte Analysen gewinnen und aufbereiten lassen. Zum Abschluss der Veranstaltung werden die Teilnehmenden um Rückmeldung gebeten, welche konkrete Unterstützung zukünftig erwünscht ist, um die Nachnutzbarkeit von Metadaten aus DINI-zertifizierten Repositorien zu verbessern. Die Ergebnisse sollen auch in das DINI-Zertifikat 2019 einfließen, für das im März die RFC-Version vorliegen wird. Die Arbeiten im Lab werden nachvollziehbar dokumentiert und im Anschluss der Veranstaltung offen geteilt, so dass die Teilnahme auch ohne eigenen Laptop möglich ist. Das Hands-On-Lab wird von der DINI AG Elektronisches Publizieren veranstaltet.
Bibliotheken und geisteswissenschaftliche Forschungen stehen seit jeher in einem engen Zusammenhang. Oft werden wissenschaftliche Bibliotheken aufgrund ihrer historischen, wertvollen Sammlungen als Labore für die Geisteswissenschaften verstanden und in Anspruch genommen. Im Zuge des digitalen Wandels haben sich die "Digital Humanities" als einerseits neues Forschungsfeld etabliert und andererseits zu einem dienste- und werkzeugbasiertem Instrumentarium für digitale Arbeitsverfahren in den Geisteswissenschaften entwickelt. Bibliothek und Wissenschaft treten dabei in Kooperationsszenarien ein, die Bibliotheken als aktive Player unmittelbar in Forschungsaktivitäten einbeziehen. Damit verbinden sich folgende Herausforderungen: · Welche Expertise- und Qualifizierungsvoraussetzungen sind für Bibliothkearinnen und Bibliothekare erforderlich, um Digital Humanists bei ihren Forschungsvorhaben zu unterstützen? · Welche organisatorischen und technischen Vorkehrungen müssen getroffen werden, um Digital Humanities in Bibliotheken zu ermöglichen? ·Welche Beispiele und Erfahrungen gibt es in Bibliotheken, um mit Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern zu kooperieren? · Welchen Stellenwert haben Digital Humanities für Bibliothken und weiteren Institutionen des kulturellen Erbes? · In welcher Weise werden DH-Aktivitäten durch internationale und nationale Infrastrukturdienste unterstützt?Diese und weitere Fragen sollen in einem Hands-On Lab im Rahmen eines World-Cafes mit folgenden deutschen und internationalen Expertinnen und Experten erörtert werden: · Miriam Blümm (SUB Göttingen) · Jan Brase (SUB Göttingen) · Sally Chambers (Ghent University) · Mike Mertens (DARIAH-EU) · Lotte Wilms (KNB of the Netherlands) Die Veranstaltung wird von Andreas Degkwitz (Humboldt-Universität) moderiert und soll bis 50 TeilnehmerInnen umfassen.
Conferences are filled with discussion, presentations, and analysis of what catalogues and cataloguing will be in the future. Reports on the topic abound. Yet despite the arrival and implementation of RDA, and the strong attention being paid toward BIBFRAME, library cataloguing still looks essentially like it did when the earliest computer-based MARC cataloguing systems were implemented. So how do libraries truly embrace the lessons and technology from the information community outside of libraries, and evolve (perhaps revolutionize) our systems and processes to take advantage of what other communities are doing? A key place to start is people. This presentation will discuss what skills and competencies cataloguers of the future should have to lead progress, and postulate what future catalogues and cataloguing systems will look like. The cataloguing landscape for the British Library is changing at an ever-faster rate. After many years of acquiring and cataloguing its collections in UKMARC on a variety of bespoke unrelated systems, the British Library moved to MARC21 when it migrated from these systems to the Aleph Integrated Library System in 2004. This has facilitated the integration of our workflows and the integrated presentation of our catalogue data to the public via our Web OPAC. The standardisation obtained by MARC21 and the functionality of Aleph have also enabled us to obtain, enhance, and share bibliographic data much more effectively and efficiently, and on a much larger scale than before. We are attempting to enrich our data through a variety of means: - "traditional" means such as upgrading bibliographic records, converting card catalogues, correcting holdings information - Providing new ways to access our data by recently implementing the Ex Libris Primo search interface, investigating access to article-level content, digitisation projects, and so on. Primo will provide access in an integrated way to those collections already on Aleph and to collections which are not able to be represented on Aleph (e.g. manuscripts and recorded sound), and will facilitate the retrieval and display of materials not previously accessible via the Web OPAC (e.g. journal articles). The BL is also participating in the development of RDA: Resource Description and Access. The BL is currently developing plans to evaluate and test RDA in 2009-10, with a view to implementation during 2011. The realisation of benefits from RDA implementation will be constrained by existing system architectures. Our data must be sufficient to support these developments, in terms of record content, relationships between records, and links between the metadata and the actual content. The ever-increasing dependence on records from elsewhere introduces challenges for data interchange, especially as new standards such as RDA and new ways of expressing data (e.g. in XML formats) are implemented. There are interesting times ahead!

The goal of the presentation is to give an overview of the MACS project and describe recent developments in the project. This concern the work with The European Library (TEL) in developing a multilingual search interface in the TEL portal and the work of a CENL working group in integrating MACS in TEL.
