The collaborative decolonial project between the Catholic University Eichstatt and the University of Chile, carried out from 2020 to 2022, consisted of a trilingual digital re-edition of the manuscript “Ñizolke zugu Dios ñi nütxam pu Chilemapuche ñi zugun mew”. This book, published in 1903, represents a collaborative colonial translation of the German Compendium der Kurzen biblischen Geschichte für die unteren Schuljahre der katholischen Volksschule” that the Bavarian Capuchin father Félix José de Augusta worked out together with two evangelized Mapuche, José Francisco Kolün and Pascual Segundo Painemilla Ñamcucheu in the Araucanía (South Chile) in 1902. Father Augusta already arrived at the mission station Bajo Imperial in 1896, at a time when the internal colonization of the Mapuche had already taken place. The land reform of 1866 introduced so-called Títulos de Merced, land titles, that only recognized as 'effectively occupied' the ruca, the family orchards and the enclosure, whereas the ancient territories, that allowed the material and cultural survival of Mapuche families were given to colonists, basically from Chile and Germany. On one hand, the presentation aims to show to that digitization in Libraries can be helpful to make visible the traces of the colonial relations that influenced the translation of this missionary work. On the other hand, the presentation aims to explain the challenges of search indexing this newly assembled digital edition from several historical and contemporary archives.
Relaunch of the Database Information System DBIS: Open Data, Local Views, Global Collaboration

The German scientific landscape is becoming increasingly international, and with it the Database Information System (DBIS). As a result of the DFG-funded project, a modernized version will be released in 2024, in which English-language use and thus more international cooperation will be possible. DBIS is a digital reference tool developed by the University Library of Regensburg, which supports its users in selecting the academic databases they need for their research. Since its foundation over two decades ago, DBIS has grown into a supra-regional service. DBIS is currently being expanded and adapted to the new needs of the community of institutions, data exchange partners and end users (funded by the DFG -440516279). Several hundred libraries are working together openly, locally and globally according to the guiding principle of "quality through cooperation":

The development of the new DBIS was designed to be open and the community was closely involved from the outset.
When the new version goes live, the metadata will be provided with a cc0 license. DBIS using institutions can also agree that their license data can be exchanged with other systems via the new REST API.
Local
Metadata in DBIS are currently and will continue to be maintained cooperatively by all participating libraries. This combines high data quality with labor savings for the individual institution. There is also a local view of an institution's database holdings. Libraries can place their corporate design, including the logo and main color.
Global
To ensure that DBIS can be made accessible to a more international community in the future, English as well as German user interfaces and administration tools are now available. Institutions from non-German-speaking countries such as the USA and Sweden have already shown interest in joining the DBIS community. DBIS offers international newbies the advantage of a large data pool - there are currently almost 7,000 freely accessible databases in DBIS!
The "pop-up library" is a means of bringing the library closer to the people. The concept involves setting up a booth on a designated day and location, promoting engaging conversations with users. Embraced by public libraries and increasingly adopted by university libraries, the pop-up library is recognized as an effective communication channel and outreach method. Numerous libraries employing the pop-up concept attest to its efficacy in raising awareness of library services and initiating meaningful dialogues.
In the Netherlands, several university libraries have undergone centralization, leading to the disappearance of faculty libraries. This shift poses a significant challenge for libraries to remain in contact with their clients. In the meantime, the need for physical visits to the library diminishes, thanks to the ongoing digitization of services and collections. The University of Groningen Library recognized the potential of a pop-up library to (re)connect with academic staff and to increase the visibility of our services.
In this presentation, we will delve into how the University of Groningen Library implemented a pop-up library. The focus will be on sharing practical insights gained from our experiences in setting up and organizing a pop-up library. We will provide an overview of our setup, offer tips and tricks, and reflect on our journey after a year of touring with our pop-up library. Join us as we explore our pop-up library venture.
Wir benötigen in der Forschung, und für ein qualitätsgerechtes Forschungsdatenmanagement, neue infrastrukturellen Dienste, die langfristig im Sinne von FAIR, sehr wichtig sind und die sich zum Teil erst weiter mit den wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken zusammen, etablieren. Universitätsbibliotheken sind oft PartnerInnen der forschungsnahen Dienste, sowohl lokal als auch global, wenn sie sich den neuen Themen öffnen.
In einer CoRDI 2023 Keynote in Karlsruhe im vergangenen September präsentierte Christine Borgman von der University of California, Los Angeles es so:
“Knowledge Infrastructures: The Invisible Foundation of Research Data Or, How Infrastructure Connects and Disconnects Research Communities”.
In diesem Einzelvortrag soll der Verbund Base4NFDI, insbesondere die Task Area 3, näher vorgestellt werden. Der Verbund der Basisdienste hatte im März 2023 seine Arbeit aufgenommen. Bei Base4NFDI geht es um NFDI-weite Basisdienste, die Effizienz sowie Nutzung der Services zum Forschungsdatenmanagement verbessern. Die Initiative ist eine gemeinsame aller NFDI-Konsortien. Institutionen aus der wissenschaftlichen Infrastrukturversorgung sowie aus allen großen Forschungsorganisationen in Deutschland sind aktiv bei Base4NFDI beteiligt. Die gesamte NFDI-Gemeinschaft ist Zielgruppe und arbeitet vernetzt zusammen:
“Base4NFDI is a joint initiative of all consortia within the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) to foster and establish reliable NFDI-wide basic services. Therefore, various groups and individuals within the initiative are working together to build a network for the ongoing identification, support, development, operation and evaluation of NFDI-wide basic services.”
Task Area 3 etabliert den Prozessrahmen für die Auswahl und Entwicklung von Basisdiensten (transparente und nachvollziehbare Entscheidungsfindung zur Fortführung oder Einstellung von Dienstentwicklungen). Die Rolle der Bibliotheken bei Base4NFDI wird auch erörtert und abschließend diskutiert.
The National Library of the Czech Republic started collaborating with Wikipedia in 2006 by linking its authority records to corresponding Wikipedia articles. In 2014, the National Library and Wikimedia Czech Republic began working together to educate librarians and library users. Joint projects on linked data and the use of authority records in Wikidata followed. For these projects, it proved important to have the National Library's databases licensed under CC0. This was eventually achieved and from 2022 the National Library is making most of its databases available as open data under a CC0 license. In 2023, the National Library and Wikimedia Czech Republic signed a Memorandum of Collaboration and the National Library officially launched its Wikimedians in Residence Programme. This paper will present joint activities that benefit both organizations and especially their users.
Robots among Bookshelves: The Education of Robotics at the National Library of Technology in Prague

The main goal of this paper is to present the ongoing project of robotics at the National Library of Technology (#robotikaNTK) from the insider position of its main coordinator. The presentation is focused on the introduction of the Info Corner of Robotics and its associated activities mainly consisting of several workshops.
This project was established at the end of the year 2021 as a part of the “Technological Library for the Development of Digital Literacy” funding. Since that time (and because of its popularity), it has always been in the stage of further development. The Info Corner of Robotics consists of the selection of specialized books that are connected with robotics (e. g. programming, mechatronics, ethics of A.I., kit manuals) and its main goal is to concentrate the literature across multiple fields in one space. During the time of regular consultations at the Corner, it is also possible for the visitors to be introduced to the selected robot kits.
The inseparable part of this project is the education of robotics in the form of workshops that are being conducted at the Library by specialized lecturers. The target audience for the workshops are students from elementary schools, high schools and universities. The lecturers are using educational kits mainly from Robotis Systems and also from Universal Robots as a part of the workshop with collaborative robotic arm UR3e. Based on the regular feedback up to now, the workshops provide very important experience for both: the beginners, and the specialists. Overall, they help to increase the level of technological literacy among students and often inspire them to study robotics in the future.
The project of robotics reflects the initial idea that a library of technology shouldn't be just a building full of books, but also an attractive space where the visitors are allowed to learn about technologies in combination of both: theoretical studying of books, and practical use of gadgets (e.g. robots) as well.
Libraries play a pivotal role in advancing open science initiatives, serving as hubs for knowledge dissemination. However, communication strategies about open science support for the academic community are often shaped by policy rather than the input of the target audience and a focus on peer-to-peer communication. For this reason, the University of Groningen Library developed a dialogue-based communication approach: to gather input, build consensus, identify multipliers to convey the message, share best practices and let researchers speak for themselves.
In this presentation, we will explain our communication approach and highlight the key tools that help us engage in a dialogue with the academic community. Our Open Science Ambassadors at the university’s faculties provide valuable feedback on policies and services to be developed and serve as a thermometer within our community. We join forces with bottom-up initiatives such as the Open Science Community Groningen for collaborative efforts such as the lottery-based Open Research Award. The Open Science Blog and Open Science Bites podcast feature interviews with researchers sharing their views or hands-on tips for their peers, and through our recently established presence on Mastodon, we seek interaction with academia beyond the Groningen or even the Dutch community.
In the research data life cycle, scientific repositories support scientists in publishing and validating datasets. The ecosystem of scientific data repositories (i.e. listed via re3data.org) consists of a large variety of available categories and types, including discipline specific, interdisciplinary and institutional ones, and mixtures thereof. With this heterogeneity comes large variation in terms of data and metadata standards, APIs, file formats, licenses, archival- and publication guidelines, terms of re-use, and others. This is also a reason why a search across multiple repositories is a time consuming task to be carried out by researchers who want to re-use data, but are unsure where to look for it.
The Leibniz Data Manager (LDM), accessible at https://service.tib.eu/ldmservice/ increases the availability and re-use of scientific digital objects and their metadata with the following features:
To search and explore research data across various repositoriesTo preview data in different interfaces, e.g. via tables, via audio-visual material like AutoCAD files or 2D and 3D data, or via live programming code (Jupyter Notebook(s)).To empower the semantic interoperability of metadata by mapping harvested metadata to DCAT format and providing RDF serializations.Allows the installation of customized and local LDM distributions with open source code through distribution in a docker container.In sum, LDM offers a simple, small-scale and open software distribution, which can connect digital repositories in a way such that datasets and other scientific objects will stay in their respective repositories, with LDM providing an integrated view of the data sets archived by these repositories. Scientists can understand the information contained in digital objects, strengthening, thus, scientific transparency by following the FAIR principles.
Czech libraries have been digitizing historical and modern library collections since the mid-1990s. Approximately 4 million pages are digitized every single year. In 2017 the amendment to the Copyright Act of Czech republic was approved that allowed the National Library of the Czech Republic to conclude license agreements valid for all Czech libraries to publish so called works unavailable on the market on the internet. Subsequently in 2019, a five-year license agreement was concluded to guarantee free access to the books published in the Czech Republic by the end of 2007 and periodicals published by 2010. The payment of for this access licenses is paid from the state budget through the National Library of the Czech Republic, which allows to use these services to all libraries and their registered users to read the displayed documents. During the COVID pandemic situation, when libraries and bookstores were closed, even the full opening of the digital libraries was agreed including the latest publications. The service was freely available to the university students, teachers and researchers. Publishers received adequate financial compensation from the state budget to support such an important service. This paper is aimed to introduce the experience with all the process aspects, especially contractual security and the negotiations with collective copyright holders and publishers. The technical solutions is running on the basis of the Kramerius system, which is developed in the close cooperation of the Library of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, the National Library of the Czech Republic and the Moravian Regional Library.
Wikipedia and Academic Libraries: A Global Project contains 19 chapters by 52 authors from Brazil, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Netherlands, Nigeria, Scotland, Spain, and the United States. The chapters in this book are authored by both new and longtime members of the Wikimedia community, representing a range of experiences.
