The new faculty library Unipark of the University Library of Salzburg Ursula Schachl-Raber (University Library of Salzburg, director, Salzburg, Austria), Victoria Üblagger (University Library of Salzburg, Faculty Library Unipark, Salzburg, Austria) (Presentation from Dr. Schachl-Raber: http://prezi.com/user/uetrg-o4feip/ One year ago, the new specialized library Unipark of the Faculty of Cultural and Social Sciences opened. The three-storied library measures 4000m² and was designed by architects Storch-Ehlers & Partner from Hannover, Germany. Our paper takes stock of the new library: The increasing number of users and the enthusiasm of international library visitors confirm that the Unipark library meets the increasing demands posed by the digital age. Our library is a place of study and research and a place of encounter and exchange. This is due to its successful fusion of form and functionality as well as due to its modern technical equipment. Over the past few years, libraries have succeeded in transforming into important “third spaces” for users where they study, read, and live. Students spend more and more time in libraries and only leave them to attend lectures. Thus libraries have turned into “living rooms” of their users. The formula for success when planning this library in intense cooperation between architects and librarians was to fulfill these new demands of modern libraries, to respond to the needs of our users, and to implement the latest national and international developments in library and information science.
(Presentation from Dr. Schachl-Raber: http://prezi.com/u34zursatuxe/weiterentwicklungsprozess/) There were several causes that called for “action and reaction” in the organization of our library’s work processes: new fields of action and new challenges for libraries, edificial transformations, and especially the swift development in the realm of e-media. Habits - some of them much-loved - that had developed over time were put into question. An update of our organigram as well as the development of up-to-date guidelines for our actions and work processes went hand in hand with a renewed/newly developed self-concept. This led to the start of a development process at the University Library of Salzburg in 2011. But how to start this venture? Specialist literature on corporate planning and strategic management offered two options: top down or bottom up. The UBS developed an “interlocked cooperation” accompanied by external supervision for the whole process and critical phases. After a meeting of the whole team, the most urgent matters were formulated, for example the need for a documentation of all work processes. Amongst other topics, there was a vital interest in the documentation of formal media processing, and a corresponding project group was installed. The mission of the project is to analyze and depict the current state of the whole operational procedure with the help of process management, and to find out if, and if yes where there is a need for change. Consequently, suggestions for improvements are developed. The paper will outline how process management can take place. It will give an insight into the whole process and the stages passed so far as well as the practical work of the project groups.
