The participants of the project are the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Berlin as the sending organisation and libraries in European foreign countries as the host organisations. It is planned that a total of six host organisations will take part, a different institution for each beneficiary. The objective of the project is to provide the Specialists in Media and Information Services (FAMI) who receive their vocational training in the library of the BAM with the opportunity to gain insight into the library systems of other European countries via internships of four to eight weeks. The apprentices are supposed to identify resemblances and differences regarding the German library system and especially recognize those aspects of the library code of practice of the host country that are exemplary, in accordance to a best practice approach. After their return to Germany, the apprentices can implement the conclusions that they came to and thus pass on experiences to the library of the BAM and to their employers after the vocational training. The host organisations benefit from the interns as well, since they obtain the opportunity for an interchange with German librarians. Besides getting to know a foreign library code of practice, the project has further positive aspects for the beneficiaries. On the one hand, a foreign country is experienced as a possible workplace via the internship, so that a later career outside of Germany is recognised as a real possibility, which will increase their mobility within Europe. On the other hand, the measure enhances the language abilities and intercultural social competence, skills that bring along a significant improvement of their chances to find an employment in the library field, which is geared clearly towards communication. The demand for such a project is distinctly underlined by the relevance that the policy paper “Library 2007” (published by the Bertelsmann Foundation and the Federation of German Library Associations) attributes to the best practice approach in foreign countries for the librarianship in Germany. A total of six apprentices will participate, two per year, so that the whole period that is applicable for the funding will be used (1 June 2006 to 31 May 2008).
