In recent years the provision of information for Swiss universities has been promoted through funding of joint projects of the university libraries by the Swiss federation. Funding by the federation was and is understood as initial financing during the project phase. When the project stage is over, infrastructures and services to end users must be funded by the participating institutions themselves. The paper discusses the funding model which was employed in the transformation of the Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries into permanent operation. Afterwards new challenges by the project E-lib.ch: Swiss Electronic Library with respect to its continuation will be discussed.
In several departments at the ETH Zurich digital measuring data (primary data) are collected and electronic evaluations (secondary data) generated. The ETH-Bibliothek also provides access to numerous electronic media such as electronic journals, data bases and e-books. The long-lasting availability of the information is traditionally secured by the Library. However, there is a lack of comprehensive preparation at the ETH Zurich as well as at the ETH Bibliothek for the long-term archiving of digital primary and secondary data. The project long-term archiving started in September 2006 in cooperation with the IT Services at the ETH Zurich, the ETH-Bibliothek and the Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries. The goal is to test the feasibility of the long-term archiving of digital primary and secondary data and to carry out a pilot installation with relevant processes. This gives a base for further actions to be taken at the ETH Zurich. The transferability and use of the results for other Swiss universities are also to be considered. The project proceeds according to the OAIS-model (Reference Model for Open Archival Information Systems). The ISO Standard 14721 applies as a reference model to all types of digital archiving. The single modules of the OAIS-model are imbedded into the project organization and the structure plan. In addition, the experiences and competences of other national and international projects and initiatives should be according to the possibilities used and applied.
