Pragmatic approaches to deal with complex electronic publications in the existing repository systems
(2011)
Open Access repositories contain more and more new types of publications leading to new challenges for the repository and system manager. Electronic dissertations, articles in eJournals and other publications are increasingly enriched with information units such as research data, visualizations, software and other multimedia material. Such complex publications represent a great value for scientific work. They can make research results more transparent and allow effective reuse of existing data. The management and dissemination of such composite publications (Compound Objects) represent a new and important task in the field of knowledge management. The University Library Center NRW, and the University Library Bielefeld investigate in the context of the DFG funded project "eco4r - Exposing compound objects for repositories" (www.eco4r.org), how these objects can be exposed, shared and archived by using two standards - OAI-ORE and METS.
