›Book-Patient‹ Looking for Sponsors – A Topical Classic The Scientific Library of the City of Mainz, the roots of which date back to the university founded in 1477, celebrated its bi-centennial as a municipal institution in 2005. Its manuscripts and prints, which derive mostly from the Old University Library, have set the face of the library for centuries and confirmed its perception as a research library to this day. Protection and preservation of the cultural heritage are amongst the central commitments of the library which it fulfils through preventive maintenance and restoration. Many books give evidence of the poor storing conditions prevailing in the past. Mildew, insects, ink corrosion as well as age use cause a lot of harm and necessitate a temporary ban on use for these volumes. The municipal library can cover only a fraction of the large restoration needs through its regular budget. To support its own efforts, the library inaugurated in 2006 the campaign ›Book-Patient‹ looking for sponsors, accompanied by an additional brochure and internet presence. The program is updated regularly on the homepage of the library. The public relations activity quickly turned into an image-building measure for private people and institutions, citizens and bibliophilists nationwide. The sponsors assume small and large sponsorships serving the restorarion of historic printing works and become grandparent to a book. They invest into the origin of the books and safeguard them for future researchers.
