In the course of the reestablishment of the Institute of German Philology at the University of Münster, Germany, its four originally independent libraries were merged into one single library until the end of 2011. Each of the former departmental libraries used a shelf classification of its own. In spite of these classifications covering different key subjects there are nu-merous thematic overlaps so that they cannot be used side by side for arranging the library holdings. Moreover the classifications are partly outdated, their hierarchical structures are very heterogeneous, and the shelf marks are formed according to differing principles. This situation calls for a new classification which allows the consistent shelving of the library’s media and which is updated and reworked on a regular basis.
By analysing the classifications used so far, by comparing the approaches of libraries dealing with a similar problem, by surveying several possible classifications and by drawing classifica-tion samples the first part of this thesis argues for the replacement of the old institute’s classi-fications by the Regensburger Verbundklassifikation. By considering the different aspects of a potential change of classification and by making proposals for necessary decisions the second part of the thesis lays the foundations for a detailed planning of such a reclassification project for the institute’s library.
