School Libraries and Librarians: The American Perspective

  • Dr. Nancy Everhart, President of the American Association of School Librarians, will present findings and photographs from her recently completed Vision Tour. The Vision Tour consisted of visits to 35 outstanding school libraries throughout the United States this school year. What are the will the unique characteristics of these programs in the areas of facilities, programs, teaching, personnel, and geographic location? What can we learn from them to improve school libraries internationally? Dr. Melissa Johnston of the University of Kentucky, will present the changing roles of the school librarian in the United States. In order to respond to the changing education climate, The American Association of School Librarians conducted a survey of the membership to identify the responsibilities of the school librarian in the 21st century. Five roles of the school librarian emerged as: leader, instructional partner, information specialist, teacher, and program administrator. This presentation will provide a brief overview of these roles with examples of implementation.
