Supporting open access books: opportunities and challenges of running an open access book fund at the University of Groningen
- According to the 2023 CWTS Leiden Ranking, the University of Groningen ranks 1st in the world in the area of open access, with 95% of article publications being openly accessible in the period 2018-2021. This high uptake is the combined result of several factors; two key ones are the success of Read & Publishing (R&P) agreements with academic publishers since 2015, and the implementation of new green open access regulations for short publications (articles and chapters), based on an amendment to the Dutch Copyright Act. There is no denying that so far our open access strategy has focused on short publication types (articles, conference proceedings and chapters) and, until recently, did not deal with longer publication forms which are essential for the humanities and social sciences. To address the lack of open access support for long publication forms (monographs and edited volumes), the UG introduced an open access book fund in 2022. The fund covers (part of) the Book Processing Charges for academic monographs and/or edited volumes by UG-affiliated authors. Since its launch, the fund received over 66 applications - resulting in the publication of 50 new open access books. This session will describe the fund, its eligibility criteria and workflow, as well as discuss the challenges, opportunities and lessons learned. In addition, it will address the financial sustainability of such a fund. We hope that our experience can inspire and inform institutions interested in taking their first steps in supporting open access books.
