Elevating and institutionalizing Open Science at the University of Mannheim – Setup, Evaluation, and Impact

  • Institutional support for Open Access is well established and movement in research data management (FAIRness) support continues to rise. However, other aspects of Open Science have received much less attention. While Open Access deals with opening up the end stages of the research process, Open Science encompasses the entire research pipeline and how it can be made more transparent and reproducible. This includes practices such as preregistrations, registered reports, and reproducible analysis/code which can be challenging for researchers, and support may be sought after. We believe that, with the necessary resources, libraries are well placed to add such Open Science services to their portfolio. The University of Mannheim allocated resources and established an Open Science Office in 2021 as part of the library. The initial funding from the university was for three years with an evaluation of the impact afterwards, which was used to make the Open Science Office permanent. In this talk we will focus on the process of institutionalizing our Open Science Office and our impact report together with the evaluation dimensions (i.e., training, support and services and networking). Broadly, we have learnt that measuring impact is challenging and that impact on research and researchers is likely to develop over longer periods of time. Nevertheless, it was possible to determine quantitative and qualitative aspects in our impact report. Therefore, outlining our institutional process and our approach to evaluate the impact of the Open Science Office and what was learnt can help other institutions to expand their service portfolio with respect to Open Science. Finally, we are interested in exchanging with like-minded institutions to collaborate on Open Science services for researchers.
