TY - GEN A1 - Jurczyk, Eva T1 - #Academic Libraries : Social Media Strategies from Ontario University Libraries N2 - The library as a gateway to knowledge is threatened by an inability to excite users about new information sources and services. To continue as relevant information institutions, libraries must enthusiastically embrace technologies like Twitter that have shown success in improving influence and user engagement (Cha, Haddadi, Benevenuto & Gummadi, 2010). Users of tools like Twitter self- identify as stakeholders in the organizations they “follow” by providing informal publicity (Jansen, Zhang, Sobel & Chowdury, 2009), by more actively participating as a member of the organization, (Junco, Heiberger & Loken, 2011) and by enhancing the social presence of an organization outside of its four walls (Dunlap & Lowenthal, 2009). Some academic and public library systems have invested in social media librarians to make effective use of tools like Twitter, but the addition of a staff member in this role is not an economic reality for many libraries. This talk discusses new research examining the Twitter feeds of university libraries in Ontario. The success of each Twitter feed is determined by comparing the number of Twitter followers with the size of community the library serves. 365 days worth of tweets for each library are analyzed to highlight the differences between successful and unsuccessful Tweeters. The talk discusses how successful feeds form their content; the subjects of their tweets, the frequency, and the way they utilize the functions of Twitter; such as hashtags and tiny urls. The strategies identified in the successful feeds have application in libraries of all sizes and allow librarians to participate in social media without expertise in social media conventions. This talk encourages librarians to capture each other’s knowledge and celebrate each other’s successes so that they may better connect users with library resources and services. At the same time, such anniversary-oriented planning has a risk of highlighting a single truth or presenting long-known truths. In my paper I will provide insights and practical examples of how the National Library of Latvia is developing the ‘500 Years of Latvian Books’ programme, both by offering events for a wide range of target groups – children, seniors, people with special needs, students, researchers and others – and by involving the public in shaping the content and message of the celebration. The activities of Latvian public libraries in the regions, as well as the work of educators of the National Library of Latvia, play an important role in this process. With the launch of ‘500 Years of Latvian Books’, the research into the history of reading and today's reading habits, as well as various large-scale reading promotion campaigns, have become even more important. What can a review and research of the history of books and historical circumstances contribute to today's society? How can it be reconciled with research into current reading habits, debates and diverse views on the role of books and reading today and in the future? Should the library simply meet society's needs, or can it proactively offer new perspectives on the past, present, and future, along with fresh strategies for reading and thinking? The series of events ‘500 Years of Latvian Books’ has made us think and talk about these questions, which highlight the role of the library in today's democratic society. Online technologies allow to disseminate any kind of information and leaves knowledge provided by experts, scientific community somewehere lagging behind. Quickly changing situation in providing reliable and thrustworthy information and considerations about sustainability and development of Latvian language were behind the extraordinary decision to start creating universal encyclopedia and - unlike everywhere else - from the scratch. Although there were some discussions which academic institution could provide shelter of the newly created project, The National Library of Latvia decisively took challenge and included editorial office of the National encyclopaedia within her institution. In 2018 the National encyclopaedia was unveiled and became accessible for everyone everywhere with fast growing content and developing technological "packaging". In 2022 encyclopedia reached one million unique users (from less than two million population in Latvia) according to the Google Analytics, quickly improving positioning in search tools and reaching wide and diverse audience. There are two important aspects which are directly related to the library as the institution of growing importance. First of all, library and academic world. The National Encyclopedia is direct and, it seems now already, inseparable element for the creation and dissemination process of the scientific knowledge for general audience. Around 800 authors and all major research instutions in Latvia are involved in supporting encyclopedia, which is integral part of the library. Secondly, the National Library itself is able to contribute her resources, knowledge, to promote creation of the highly efficient and direct cooperation between various scientific fields and at the same time to expand impact of library and academic community. The Vision Tour consisted of visits to 35 outstanding school libraries throughout the United States this school year. What are the will the unique characteristics of these programs in the areas of facilities, programs, teaching, personnel, and geographic location? What can we learn from them to improve school libraries internationally? Dr. Melissa Johnston of the University of Kentucky, will present the changing roles of the school librarian in the United States. In order to respond to the changing education climate, The American Association of School Librarians conducted a survey of the membership to identify the responsibilities of the school librarian in the 21st century. Five roles of the school librarian emerged as: leader, instructional partner, information specialist, teacher, and program administrator. This presentation will provide a brief overview of these roles with examples of implementation. Einblicke in die Arbeit von Schulbibliotheken und Gefängnisbibliotheken (25.06.2025, 16:30 - 18:00, Salon Danzig) N2 - The school library is an indispensable part of the educational system, providing support to students, teachers, and the wider community in accessing information, developing reading and learning skills, and fostering creativity. In addition, it serves as an essential hub for knowledge acquisition, a space for independent and collaborative work, and increasingly a social space where discussions, idea exchanges, and various activities take place. The role of the school librarian is evolving — they are no longer just managers of library resources but also initiators and coordinators of numerous projects that connect the local and international community. At our school, the library actively participates in developing information literacy skills, enabling students to learn how to search for, evaluate, and use information effectively. Through the Growing Up with a Book project, we promote a culture of reading, while the Reading Badge program fosters a long-standing tradition of reading quality literature. We also participate in international projects like Erasmus+, where students develop language and intercultural competencies. Significant initiatives include Our Little Library, which inspires creativity in younger students through books; the Intergenerational Reading Club, which brings together different generations to share literary experiences; and the Reading Without Borders project, which strengthens cross-border collaboration. Through the literary project Rhymes in Mind, we encourage writing and reading poetry, while the Crocus Project raises students’ awareness about the Holocaust. All the mentioned activities significantly contribute to the democratization of knowledge, promote a reading culture, and strengthen the core values of lifelong learning. T2 - Themenkreis 4: Bibliotheken – Services und Angebote/ Offen für Forschung (26.06.2025, 09:00 - 12:00, Halle 4.1./ Raum II) N2 - Do you think that a national library can be a prominent research and scientific institution having an international overlap? The example of the National Library of the Czech Republic (in the further text also "NL CR") illustrates clearly that the modern national library must have this ambition. And it is not just about the primary tasks to support external researchers through core research, providing access to electronic databases or contemporary book acquisition. The National Library of the Czech Republic has been active for a long time in a wide range of research projects that aim to various activities enriching not only the social sciences. Its research activities do not cover ground research only, but also created a number of applied research outputs, including so-called excellent results. The range of activities is also very diverse - from the research of historical collections, to the machine learning throughout the processing of web archive datasets, to systematic surveys of book materials measured through the unique technologies running in the special research laboratories. This year, the National Library of the Czech Republic received the highest rating for its R&D activities that the research organization in the Czech Republic can have - the "A" excellence ranking. Not even all the Czech universities or other scientific institutions are able to achieve this. Are you more interested in?
