The Igitur experience in the Netherlands N2 - Why a library is engaged in publishing? As a consequence of developments in information technology, the traditional information chain is subject to change: the separate functions in this chain become more and more integrated and the roles played by the traditional parties are most uncertain. New models in scholarly publishing are emerging, in which the scientific community itself plays a central role. It is more than natural for the university libraries, whose main function is to provide access to scientific information, to support these developments. In 2003 e-publishing was assigned as a structural task of the Utrecht University Library: the unit Igitur was launched. With Igitur, Utrecht was one of the first academic institutions in Europe to give electronic publishing a structural place within the library organization. The primary goal of Igitur is to increase access to scientific information. Igitur has two main functions: to develop the Utrecht digital repository which is financed out of the library´s budget; and to support scholars in their e-publishing endeavours. The e-publishing infrastructure is financed out of the library´s budget, but the marginal costs for services must be recovered. At the moment Igitur is publishing 10 e-journals (8 of them fully open access), e-books and supports a number of publication websites (www.uu.nl/igitur). Igitur wants to continue to expand, so professionalization is necessary. To stay up to speed with international technical developments, Igitur cooperates with the Public Knowlegde Project (Open Journal Systems). Igitur strives to more businesslike relationships with its clients by entering into service level agreements. Furthermore Igitur aims at building an active publishing community around the journals. By continuing to develop in this way, Igitur intends to contribute to the overall goal of improving access to scientific information. Besides Covid-19 and vaccine scepticism we struggle with fake news, post-factual society, climate change, unsustainable food systems, and a multitude of other global problems. Citizen Science – the inclusion of citizens and communities in scientific research – can help mitigate some of these challenges. But it does not happen overnight. If we want to solve these problems, new roles, infrastructures, and partnerships will have to be emerge. And critically, science needs to move closer to society and into the daily life of citizens. The opening quote by Josep Perello (researcher and founder of the Social Citizen Science movement) highlight that public libraries can play a central role. Libraries can be a first point of contact for citizens. They can recruit and retain citizens, provide infrastructure, disseminate scientific information, host events and potentially manage communities and projects. Yet such openness shall not remain merely in the realm of open access, but go beyond and include many more dimensions such as openness to multimedia formats, to all career stages, or to a broad range of cultural concepts. Therefore, the International Graduate for the Study of Culture (GCSC) at Justus-Liebig-University in Giessen, Germany, created its own open access e-journal: On_Culture: The Open Journal for the Study of Culture. It is a biannual, peer-reviewed academic e-journal created and edited by doctoral researchers, postdocs, and professors working at the GCSC. It provides a platform and a forum for pursuing and reflecting on the study of culture. It investigates, problematizes, and develops key concepts and methods in the field. Developing such new approaches and emerging topics is a collaborative and collective process. On_Culture is dedicated to fostering such collective processes and the cultural dynamics at work in thinking about and reflecting on culture. To reflect these multi-faceted inquiries, the journal consists of three sections: academic _Articles (double-blind peer reviewed), _Essays, and _Perspectives such as video clips, interviews, and visual statements, which can be submitted on a rolling basis. On_Culture is the result of collaborative processes and emergent structures in the field of e-publishing. On_Culture puts new approaches and emerging topics in the (trans)national study of culture 'on the line' and, in so doing, fills the gap____ between 'on' and 'culture'. As such, On_Culture develops a concept of openness that goes beyond open access but rather reflects the openness of the study of culture as a whole. We record very basic bibliographic information and then lock the door. But the work in these resources are unique and give us a window into scientific, social, political, economic over the centuries. Yet we have done nothing but treat them as just another part of the university record. We are all sitting on the last unexplored world of how thought has developed, a chance to see how some of the great thinkers developed over their studies. This paper challenges our community to do so much better than we have to date. Over the last few years many universities have been accepting born digital works and putting them into institutional repositories. In the UK the British Library started the EThOS service and asked institutions for permission (or to pay) to digitise the works and make them available open access. At the University of Surrey both approaches saw us provide under 1,000 theses online. We have also been working with ProQuest on digitising additional works and suddenly, the hits on our repository, and the downloads of material from it, increased exponentially. And we were not the only ones, in the UK those of us who were investing in making theses available were seeing an increase in engagement with our open access repositories. At Surrey we are great advocates of open research, and our institution has always focused on applied science. We were aware that we had thousands of assets that could benefit society worldwide; as well as continue to build our academic reputation. We have made significant benefits to society, but at times the link to the technologies and theories developed by our academy have been lost in history. By ensuring our thesis are immediately available we immediately help current scholars as well as members of the public; but we still had more to do to exploit those hidden gems still not available. (24.06.2025, 13:00 - 15:30, Halle 4.1./ Raum V) N2 - The transition to sustainable energy systems requires, among other things, the implementation of open science practices, including adopting open access publications, transparent data-sharing mechanisms, and collaborative frameworks. NFDI4Energy, part of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) initiative in Germany, aims to enhance data management and accessibility in energy research, advancing open science principles. However, the current extent of openness within energy research remains insufficiently explored. This study addresses two pivotal questions: To what extent do researchers in the energy domain follow open access publishing and data sharing practices? What trends and challenges emerge within the field of energy research? A bibliometric analysis was conducted using OpenAlex, an open metadata platform for scholarly outputs, to assess patterns of open access publications, data-sharing mentions, and collaboration networks in energy research. The preliminary findings indicate that openness in energy research exhibits variability across different subfields. Renewable energy research demonstrates a higher proportion of both general and open access publications, while data sharing remains sporadic, with few references to reusable datasets in publications. This presents a range of potential challenges, which were also elaborated upon in further detail in the study. While the use of OpenAlex ensures adherence to open data principles, there are also limitations, such as the potential for gaps and duplicates in the metadata, as well as difficulties in tracing implicit data sharing practices. Nevertheless, these findings already contribute to an understanding of the current state of openness in energy research and inform strategies within the NFDI4Energy consortium and for energy research to promote fair and transparent scientific practices. Digitalization and more complex data, make advanced domain-specific knowledge necessary to generate and manage high quality, FAIR data. In 2023, the University of Zurich (UZH) library launched a university-wide data stewards network, which supports researchers in understanding FAIR data standards and using them in their own research. Data stewards act as a bridge between researchers and university support services. They are the first point of contact for researchers with questions about research data management and FAIR data, they disseminate information and best practices in their respective departments, and they help make workflows and research data management pipelines more FAIR. A significant challenge in creating a university wide network at UZH is the heterogenous research landscape with different departments working with different types of data as well as having very different research cultures. To tailor the network to the specific needs of the researchers, structured interviews were done with potential data stewards. Data stewards were recruited both in the faculties (researchers), as well as in the IT and data services (technical staff). We identified what university-wide support was already being used, and what the current research data management in the departments looked like. We also did a needs assessment, to find out what researchers themselves felt they needed support with and in what areas they felt they lacked proficiency. One year after launching the data stewards network, we again assessed the needs of researchers as well as how the data stewards would describe their roles and tasks. These findings may prove useful for other institutions looking to establish data stewards networks coordinated by their library. This high uptake is the combined result of several factors; two key ones are the success of Read & Publishing (R&P) agreements with academic publishers since 2015, and the implementation of new green open access regulations for short publications (articles and chapters), based on an amendment to the Dutch Copyright Act. There is no denying that so far our open access strategy has focused on short publication types (articles, conference proceedings and chapters) and, until recently, did not deal with longer publication forms which are essential for the humanities and social sciences. To address the lack of open access support for long publication forms (monographs and edited volumes), the UG introduced an open access book fund in 2022. The fund covers (part of) the Book Processing Charges for academic monographs and/or edited volumes by UG-affiliated authors. Since its launch, the fund received over 66 applications - resulting in the publication of 50 new open access books. This session will describe the fund, its eligibility criteria and workflow, as well as discuss the challenges, opportunities and lessons learned. In addition, it will address the financial sustainability of such a fund. We hope that our experience can inspire and inform institutions interested in taking their first steps in supporting open access books. OG) N2 - Open science principles are becoming more prominent in academia. University libraries play a central role in encouraging researchers to openly share their findings and data. They support community-driven publishing platforms and provide non-commercial open infrastructures. However, their communication strategy to promote these services often still relies on ‘closed’ and commercial online services, such as Twitter/X. Motivated by its commitment to open science, the University of Groningen Library was looking for a more inclusive and collaborative medium to communicate with its community. In our talk, we motivate our strategic shift from Twitter/X to Mastodon, a decentralised and community-driven social media platform. We discuss how we integrate open principles into our strategic online communication and examine the impact of platform features on how we contribute meaningful content to academic discourse. We share challenges and successes we encountered during the transition towards a community-run platform: from taking our first steps on Mastodon to preparing our Twitter followers for the transition to leaving the birdsite for good (and communicating that!) - resulting in a 900+ follower gain within 4 days, shifting from a rather local audience on Twitter to an international community on Mastodon. We also provide insights into a detailed follower analysis on Mastodon and into our tailored content strategy that supports our mission to not just locally but also internationally highlight the University of Groningen Library’s role as a partner in open science. We discuss guidelines about whether, when and how (academic) libraries should join the Fediverse for more interaction with our target audiences and their role in promoting a less clickbait-driven communication approach. OG) N2 - Institutional support for Open Access is well established and movement in research data management (FAIRness) support continues to rise. However, other aspects of Open Science have received much less attention. While Open Access deals with opening up the end stages of the research process, Open Science encompasses the entire research pipeline and how it can be made more transparent and reproducible. This includes practices such as preregistrations, registered reports, and reproducible analysis/code which can be challenging for researchers, and support may be sought after. We believe that, with the necessary resources, libraries are well placed to add such Open Science services to their portfolio. The University of Mannheim allocated resources and established an Open Science Office in 2021 as part of the library. The initial funding from the university was for three years with an evaluation of the impact afterwards, which was used to make the Open Science Office permanent. In this talk we will focus on the process of institutionalizing our Open Science Office and our impact report together with the evaluation dimensions (i.e., training, support and services and networking). Broadly, we have learnt that measuring impact is challenging and that impact on research and researchers is likely to develop over longer periods of time. Nevertheless, it was possible to determine quantitative and qualitative aspects in our impact report. Therefore, outlining our institutional process and our approach to evaluate the impact of the Open Science Office and what was learnt can help other institutions to expand their service portfolio with respect to Open Science. Finally, we are interested in exchanging with like-minded institutions to collaborate on Open Science services for researchers. This enhancement extends beyond traditional library ecosystem data, such as authority files, to encompass a broad spectrum of non-library data sources like Wikidata, DBpedia, and OpenAlex. In this context, we present an approach that leverages linked data principles, persistent identifiers, and knowledge-based systems to construct comprehensive representations of author profiles. Rather than resorting to localized storage with isolated data silos, our approach prioritizes the direct ingestion of information from its original sources. This approach, complemented by the integration of harvested data with authors' research outputs indexed in our discovery portal EconBiz, yields a nuanced and thorough overview. The application of Natural Language Processing (NLP), text mining, and Machine Learning (ML) techniques further refines insights, offering diverse perspectives and deepening the understanding of authors. Author profiles provide a multifaceted gateway to understanding a scholar's research contributions. Visual representations enable quick identification of expertise areas and output. Thesaurus- or ML-enriched word tags enhance search capabilities, allowing users to refine queries based on semantically related terms. Co-authorship network visualizations and other features, such as “related authors” expand exploration options, uncovering scholars with similar research interests who are not necessarily co-authors. Additionally, the discovery of other persistent identifiers unlocks new avenues for profile enrichment with diverse information, including citation metrics and research data. We will present the main functionalities of the EconBiz Author Profiles (https://www.econbiz.de/eb/en/beta/econbiz-author-profiles) including a glimpse of new developments. UGP is a new university press - an open access, digital-first, and library-based publishing service that grew out of dissatisfaction with traditional publishing models. Our session focuses on UGP's open textbook publishing pilot, an initiative informed by lessons from open access journal and monograph publishing services. This dynamic approach positions UGP as a comprehensive diamond open access publisher, embracing various university domains (education, research, public engagement), fostering cross-disciplinary collaborations, and facilitating knowledge exchange within open science. The UGP’s open textbook pilot showcases the university press as a hub for connecting open science's diverse elements, facilitating seamless knowledge transfer, and strengthening engagement with the broader "open" agenda. Our goal is to demonstrate that new university presses play a visible role in enhancing synergy across various open science domains. As a diamond open access publisher, UGP provides a platform for faculty and researchers to publish journals, books and series, inaugural lectures, and open textbooks, breaking down barriers to accessibility. Prioritizing scientific relevance over commercial considerations, UGP empowers scholars to contribute high-quality open publications, both faculty- and student-led, fostering wider research dissemination and equitable access to education. This session invites participants to explore the role of new university presses in the broader open science framework, serving as catalysts for connecting its multifaceted components. Through the open textbook publishing case study, we aim to initiate further conversation, generating ideas and collaborative solutions to address challenges in reshaping the future of academic publishing and open knowledge dissemination. Y1 - 2024 ER - TY - BOOK ED - Karaganis, Joe T1 - Shadow Libraries : Access to Knowledge in Global Higher Education N2 - How students get the materials they need as opportunities for higher education expand but funding shrinks. From the top down, Shadow Libraries explores the institutions that shape the provision of educational materials, from the formal sector of universities and publishers to the broadly informal ones organized by faculty, copy shops, student unions, and students themselves. It looks at the history of policy battles over access to education in the post–World War II era and at the narrower versions that have played out in relation to research and textbooks, from library policies to book subsidies to, more recently, the several “open” publication models that have emerged in the higher education sector. From the bottom up, Shadow Libraries explores how, simply, students get the materials they need. It maps the ubiquitous practice of photocopying and what are—in many cases—the more marginal ones of buying books, visiting libraries, and downloading from unauthorized sources. It looks at the informal networks that emerge in many contexts to share materials, from face-to-face student networks to Facebook groups, and at the processes that lead to the consolidation of some of those efforts into more organized archives that circulate offline and sometimes online— the shadow libraries of the title. If Alexandra Elbakyan's Sci-Hub is the largest of these efforts to date, the more characteristic part of her story is the prologue: the personal struggle to participate in global scientific and educational communities, and the recourse to a wide array of ad hoc strategies and networks when formal, authorized means are lacking. If Elbakyan's story has struck a chord, it is in part because it brings this contradiction in the academic project into sharp relief—universalist in principle and unequal in practice. Shadow Libraries is a study of that tension in the digital era.ContributorsBalázs Bodó, Laura Czerniewicz, Miroslaw Filiciak, Mariana Fossatti, Jorge Gemetto, Eve Gray, Evelin Heidel, Joe Karaganis, Lawrence Liang, Pedro Mizukami, Jhessica Reia, Alek Tarkowski KW - Schattenbibliothek KW - Recherche KW - Wissenschaftliches Publizieren KW - scholarly publication KW - shadow libraries Y1 - 2018 U6 - http://nbn-resolving.de/urn/resolver.pl?urn:nbn:de:0290-opus4-178062 UR - http:/library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/26038 SN - 9780262535014 PB - MIT Press CY - Cambridge, MA ER -
