Digital transformation processes, social and cultural changes, and a differentiation of spatial needs are challenging libraries in their mission to provide the best possible spaces for their users. These challenges may prove to be opportunities if libraries enable themselves to co-create innovative and experimental spaces in close collaboration with their target groups. The frameworks and methodologies for such processes are quite diverse, but they all share a creative and iterative approach to space design. During this international round table, we will discuss different approaches within their respective contexts, highlighting three best ideas designed or realised in Hamburg with local and international partners. There will be short inputs from local and international speakers sharing their projects and inspiring an active audience participation.1. The aim of BALTIC UKH is to provide public authorities and other institutions with tools and methods for the participatory design of accessible as well as attractive information spaces and services. Three libraries and a university from the Baltic Sea Region are collaborating to create a research-based toolbox. The project is co-funded by the European Union under the Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme.2. Libraries can contribute to the collaborative nature of the Digital Humanities by providing a space for the community to meet, share, and collaborate, as they are often connected to DH research as providers of source material and supporting infrastructure. The Library for the Humanities at the University of Hamburg aims to provide such a space with the newly opened DHLab.3. The Extended Library of the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg centres around the new role of libraries in a digital age. How can libraries not only serve as knowledge archives but also support artistic knowledge production, while simultaneously remaining relevant as a social space within an art academy? Y1 - 2024 ER -
