We present an ambitious approach to transform how linguistic publications are discovered, linked, and categorized by integrating advanced AI technologies and domain-specific knowledge bases. In our project Fachinformationsdienst (FID) Linguistik, we aim at combining sophisticated full-text search, information extraction and named entity linking to make publications interconnected, accessible, and impactful, even in resource-constrained environments. At the heart of this initiative is the integration of established knowledge bases such as the Gemeinsame Normdatei (GND) and Bibliography of Linguistic Literature (BLL) for document classification and semantic search. These efforts are underpinned by the publications annotated with ontology concepts, which establish the framework for linking linguistic terminologies to publications. The expert-annotated data will be used to fine-tune multilingual LLMs for named entity recognition (NER). Identified entities will not only be linked across documents for search and recommendation, but via BLL concepts, they will also connect to external linked open data (LOD). Preliminary results from our experiments in multilingual Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) for the linguistic domain (Ho et al., 2024) show promising improvements, with our model achieving comparable performance to state-of-the-art monolingual alternatives. Additionally, we are currently exploring means of subject tagging with the GND subjects taxonomy for adaptation into the project. In the long term, we envision the implementation of these technologies into future versions of the open access repository of the Goethe University. With our novel approach, we hope to create a more inclusive, efficient, and interconnected research ecosystem, with the FID Linguistik and Linguistik Portal at the forefront of these transformative changes.
