Ranging from on-line bullying to the algorithms with which social platforms steer their users into the arms of advertisers, influencers of a questionable kind or political agitators; and from fake news to complete deep fake, AI-generated 'human' beings. Jointly we will explore the various forms online, and experience how they work and manifest themselves. We will discuss the role of (public) libraries in this context. Is it enough for libraries to make their clients aware of misinformation and manipulative influencing? What is the effect it can have on their personal lives but also on the society at large? Or should the libraries take a much more activist stance and label or even ban information and algorithms that cannot be completely trusted? This workshop does not only deal with pure misinformation but also with the potential undertow of misinformation. Into which you can easily be lured and then become part of a secluded bubble. On exemplary topics the participants will find out the quantity of misinforming sources and the demarcation of trusted information resource. Take-aways from this workshop: Overview of recent developments in misinformation and counter-initiatives Awareness of the different levels at which libraries can play a role and concrete examples of what is already being done Insight in the role of AI in this}, language = {en} } @misc{vanWesselBoekesteijn2021, author = {van Wessel, Jan Willem and Boekesteijn, Erik}, title = {AI in Bibliotheken, Bibliotheken in AI}, series = {Themenkreis 1: Politische und gesellschaftliche Herausforderungen / Partnerland-Programm "Niederlande" (16.06.2021, 09:00 - 10:30 Uhr, Studio 2 (vor Ort in Bremen \& virtuell))}, journal = {Themenkreis 1: Politische und gesellschaftliche Herausforderungen / Partnerland-Programm "Niederlande" (16.06.2021, 09:00 - 10:30 Uhr, Studio 2 (vor Ort in Bremen \& virtuell))}, url = {http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:0290-opus4-175719}, year = {2021}, abstract = {In this presentation, we will explain how AI is changing the way Libraries work and how it is changing what Libraries have to offer to their clients. You will see examples of AI-based search apps, automated text creation, AI-generated audio books and many more. However, the reverse is equally interesting and relevant: how can Libraries have an impact on the development of trusted and ethical AI. Libraries have a lot of data and content available to train AI. Furthermore, Libraries have always been dealing with ethical issues. This expertise should be used to detect fake news, to warn users for biased information and more in general: to make our clients AI-ware. The future of libraries cannot be imagined without the use of artificial intelligence. However, this development not only has technical and organizational consequences and implications, but also social and ethical consequences. How can libraries position themselves here? What possibilities do you have to influence or even control this development? This workshop is intended to raise awareness of these questions as well as to illuminate them from various aspects, and finally give more context to library policy around this important development of technology and its use. The basis for the content-related aspects of this workshop is the library policy with regard to this issue that is carried by the National Library of the Netherlands; two of the key specialists who have contributed to this policy will conduct the workshop.
