University libraries play a central role in encouraging researchers to openly share their findings and data. They support community-driven publishing platforms and provide non-commercial open infrastructures. However, their communication strategy to promote these services often still relies on 'closed' and commercial online services, such as Twitter/X. Motivated by its commitment to open science, the University of Groningen Library was looking for a more inclusive and collaborative medium to communicate with its community. In our talk, we motivate our strategic shift from Twitter/X to Mastodon, a decentralised and community-driven social media platform. We discuss how we integrate open principles into our strategic online communication and examine the impact of platform features on how we contribute meaningful content to academic discourse. We share challenges and successes we encountered during the transition towards a community-run platform: from taking our first steps on Mastodon to preparing our Twitter followers for the transition to leaving the birdsite for good (and communicating that!) - resulting in a 900+ follower gain within 4 days, shifting from a rather local audience on Twitter to an international community on Mastodon. We also provide insights into a detailed follower analysis on Mastodon and into our tailored content strategy that supports our mission to not just locally but also internationally highlight the University of Groningen Library's role as a partner in open science. We discuss guidelines about whether, when and how (academic) libraries should join the Fediverse for more interaction with our target audiences and their role in promoting a less clickbait-driven communication approach.}, language = {en} } @misc{KnauerWesterhof2024, author = {Knauer, Babette and Westerhof, Josca}, title = {Yes, We're Open: How the University of Groningen Library Proactively Fosters Awareness and Dialogue on Open Science}, series = {TK 2: {\"U}ber den Tellerrand geschaut - Bibliotheken im Dialog/ Wikimedia und Dialog mit Forschenden (06.06.2024, 11:00 - 12:30, Saal C.2 / 1. However, communication strategies about open science support for the academic community are often shaped by policy rather than the input of the target audience and a focus on peer-to-peer communication. For this reason, the University of Groningen Library developed a dialogue-based communication approach: to gather input, build consensus, identify multipliers to convey the message, share best practices and let researchers speak for themselves. In this presentation, we will explain our communication approach and highlight the key tools that help us engage in a dialogue with the academic community. Our Open Science Ambassadors at the university's faculties provide valuable feedback on policies and services to be developed and serve as a thermometer within our community. We join forces with bottom-up initiatives such as the Open Science Community Groningen for collaborative efforts such as the lottery-based Open Research Award. The Open Science Blog and Open Science Bites podcast feature interviews with researchers sharing their views or hands-on tips for their peers, and through our recently established presence on Mastodon, we seek interaction with academia beyond the Groningen or even the Dutch community.}, language = {en} }
