Linking Personality With Interpersonal Perception in the Classroom: Distinct Associations With the Social and Academic Sides of Popularity (2018)
Lösch, Thomas ; Rentzsch, Katrin
We investigated associations between the Big Five personality traits and interpersonal perception in the classroom. Extending earlier studies, we differentiate interpersonal perception by domain (social vs. academic) and the interpersonal roles of targets (popularity) and perceivers (preference). In a round-robin design, 358 students rated all classmates in the social (spending free time together) and academic domains (doing academic tasks together). Results from a Bayesian social relations model highlighted the roles of agreeableness and extraversion for interpersonal perception. Neuroticism was linked to rating classmates favorably in the social and academic domains and conscientiousness to being rated favorably in the academic domain. Investigating interpersonal perception by domain and interpersonal role provided univocal results on the distinctive links between personality and interpersonal perception.
Feeling special, feeling happy: Authenticity mediates the relationship between sense of uniqueness and happiness (2018)
Koydemir, Selda ; Şimşek, Ömer Faruk ; Kuzgun, Tubanur Bayram ; Schütz, Astrid
Uniqueness is a fundamental aspect of individual identity, yet commonly used conceptualizations of uniqueness are based on the contrast between an individual and other people, an understanding that is not congruent with person-centred definitions from humanistic approaches. This study is based on the idea that uniqueness is concerned with the acceptance of one’s existence and uses Şimsek and Yalınçetin’s (Personality and Individual Differences, 49, 576–581, 2010) conceptualization, namely, a personal sense of uniqueness. Relying on both self- and observer reports, we examined the mediating role of authenticity in the relationship between a personal sense of uniqueness and happiness. This study also provides an extension of previous research by furthering the understanding of how dimensions of authenticity are linked to well-being. In line with our hypotheses, we found that a personal sense of uniqueness was positively related to authentic living and negatively related to self-alienation. Our results also showed a negative correlation between self-alienation and happiness and a positive correlation between authentic living and happiness. Self-alienation, a core dimension of authenticity, mediated the relationship between a personal sense of uniqueness and happiness.
The Bamberg Trucking Game: A Paradigm for Assessing the Detection of Win-Win Solutions in a Potential Conflict Scenario (2018)
Nalis, Dario ; Schütz, Astrid ; Pastukhov, Alexander
In win–win solutions, all parties benefit more from the solution than they would if they each pursued their own individual goals. Such solutions are beneficial at individual and collective levels and thus represent optimal solutions. Win–win solutions are desirable but often difficult to find. To allow the study of individual differences and situational factors that help or hinder the detection of win–win solutions, we created a paradigm that fills a gap in the repertoire of psychological instruments used to assess collaboration, cooperation, negotiation, and prosocial behavior. The new paradigm differs from previous ones in two aspects: (a) In existing paradigms that focus on social motivation, possible strategies are evident, whereas we focused here on the question of whether people can detect the solution and thus disentangle ability from motivation, (b) Paradigms that focus on cooperation typically entail a risk associated with the partner’s defection, whereas cooperation in our paradigm is not associated with risk. We adjusted the Trucking Game—a method for assessing bargaining—to include a situation in which two parties can help each other achieve their respective goals and thus benefit over and above the pursuit of individual goals or compromising. We tested scenario-based and interaction-based versions with samples of 154 and 112 participants, respectively. Almost one third of the participants or dyads found the win–win solution. General mental abilities were not related to detecting the win–win solution in either version. The paradigm provides a way to extend research on cooperation and conflict and can thus be useful for research and training.
Neurobiological correlates of emotional intelligence in voice and face perception networks (2018)
Karle, Kathrin N. ; Ethofer, Thomas ; Jacob, Heike ; Brück, Carolin ; Erb, Michael ; Lotze, Martin ; Nizielski, Sophia ; Schütz, Astrid
Facial expressions and voice modulations are among the most important communicational signals to convey emotional information. The ability to correctly interpret this information is highly relevant for successful social interaction and represents an integral component of emotional competencies that have been conceptualized under the term emotional intelligence. Here, we investigated the relationship of emotional intelligence as measured with the Salovey-Caruso-Emotional-Intelligence-Test (MSCEIT) with cerebral voice and face processing using functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging. MSCEIT scores were positively correlated with increased voice-sensitivity and gray matter volume of the insula accompanied by voice-sensitivity enhanced connectivity between the insula and the temporal voice area, indicating generally increased salience of voices. Conversely, in the face processing system, higher MSCEIT scores were associated with decreased face-sensitivity and gray matter volume of the fusiform face area. Taken together, these findings point to an alteration in the balance of cerebral voice and face processing systems in the form of an attenuated face-vs-voice bias as one potential factor underpinning emotional intelligence.
Leader-Follower Crossover : Exhaustion Predicts Somatic Complaints via StaffCare Behavior. (2018)
Köppe, Christina ; Kammerhoff, Jana ; Schütz, Astrid
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the direct and indirect crossover effects of leaders’ exhaustion on followers’ somatic complaints by testing leaders’ health-oriented behavior toward employees as a possible underlying mechanism. Design/methodology/approach A two-wave online study using data from different sources was conducted. In a sample of 106 leaders and followers, leaders were paired with one or two followers. Leaders rated their level of exhaustion at Time 1, and followers rated their leaders’ health-oriented leadership behavior (i.e. StaffCare behavior) and their own level of somatic complaints three months later (Time 2). Findings Results provided evidence of an indirect crossover effect from leaders’ exhaustion to followers’ somatic complaints through StaffCare behavior. There was no direct crossover effect. Practical implications Findings suggest that organizations should attend to leaders’ health as a means to allow for StaffCare behavior and thus protect employee health. Originality/value StaffCare behavior represents a new concept that focuses on health-related aspects of leadership. This is the first study to take an in-depth look at the question of how this leadership behavior is tied to crossover from leader exhaustion to follower health.
Leading toward harmony : Different types of conflict mediate how followers’ perceptions of transformational leadership are related to job satisfaction and performance (2018)
Kammerhoff, Jana ; Lauenstein, Oliver ; Schütz, Astrid
Conflict has negative effects on employees' job satisfaction and performance. Transformational leadership, on the other hand, has been shown to have strong positive relations with both job satisfaction and performance, but is negatively related to conflicts at the workplace. However, up to now how these different factors influence one another remains unclear. With this study, we take a closer look at the role of conflict and focus on task and relationship conflicts as possible mediators between transformational leadership and job satisfaction on the one hand and performance on the other. Data from professional orchestra musicians in German-speaking countries were used, as transformational leadership is often likened to the method of leadership found in orchestras. Structural equation modeling indicated that task conflict mediated the effect of transformational leadership on performance and relationship conflict mediated the effect of transformational leadership on job satisfaction. Implications and limitations are discussed.
Narcissus oeconomicus : Facets of narcissism and socio-economic decision-making (2018)
Fatfouta, Ramzi ; Rentzsch, Katrin ; Schröder-Abé, Michela
How do narcissists respond to monetary rewards and are there differences in fairness sensitivity between different facets of narcissism? The present study (N = 287) investigated these questions using the Ultimatum Game, a behavioral decision-making task involving the presentation of advantageous and disadvantageous financial offers. The results of multilevel modeling revealed that individual differences in narcissism modulated responders’ game decisions: Individuals high in narcissism, particularly narcissistic rivalry, were more likely to accept monetary offers and this effect was even more pronounced for comparatively unfair offers. Results extend previous findings, suggesting that narcissists are hypersensitive to rewards and pay close attention how to maximize their personal profit rather than to enforce fairness norms.
Stability and change in domain-specific self-esteem and global self-esteem (2018)
Rentzsch, Katrin ; Schröder-Abé, Michela
A notable uptick of interest in the stability of self‐esteem has been observed over the past few years. Most researchers, however, have focused on unidimensional rather than multidimensional conceptualizations of self‐esteem. The paucity of empirical research is surprising given conflicting theoretical perspectives on the stability of self‐esteem. The goal of the present study was to thoroughly disentangle different conceptualizations of self‐esteem and test opposing classical theories on (i) the stability and (ii) the direction of mutual influence of these different forms of self‐esteem. We analysed two‐year longitudinal data from participants (N = 644 at T1, N = 241 at T2) with an average age of 47.0 years (SD = 12.4). Analyses using a latent variable approach revealed that the domains of self‐esteem were relatively stable in terms of rank order and mean levels. In fact, the size of the stability coefficients was comparable to that of other trait measures that have been reported in the literature and paralleled the stability observed for global self‐esteem. Results did not provide support for either top‐down or bottom‐up effects between domain‐specific and global self‐esteem. These findings have important theoretical and practical implications regarding the stability and development of self‐esteem in adulthood and advance the understanding of self‐esteem in personality theory.
