In this lecture, the safety assessment of hydrogen gas storage systems is presented using the example of composite pressure vessels. The main element is a probabilistic approval approach based on five steps. Firstly, the testing and evaluation of properties at the beginning of life are shown. Secondly, methods for artificial aging and the effect on the residual strength are presented. Thirdly, testing against dedicated accidents is introduced. Fourthly, effects on the surveillance of production quality are discussed. Finally, degradation and the end of life are estimated. Background information and examples are given for each step. The assessment presented is a method applicable for many safety-related systems.
The built environment significantly impacts the health of individuals and populations in various ways. The health and durability of the built environment are intertwined with availability ofnaturally occurring and man-made resources and their supply chains. Therefore, resource con servation is a key to ensure sustainability of built environments. Many industrial wastes can be turned into valuable resources for reuse in construction of the built environment. For instance, biowaste (woody/ leafy biomass and animal waste) have been used to make construction adhesives (Fini et al., 2011), some urban wastes have been used in road construction (Poulikakos et al., 2017; Schmidt et al., 2021), end of life plastics and polymers have made their way to roadway construction, bio-oils and algae harvested from wastewater treatment plants has been used to make antiaging for outdoor building elements to mitigate UV aging (Kabir et al., 2021); sulfur has been used as an extender in asphalt and recycled mineral powders such as silica and alumina have been used to increase strength and durability against acidic compounds (Fini et al., 2019). These are just a few examples of recycling venues with beneficial uses in the built environment.
The construction and operation of the built environment and the traffic that it attracts or facilitates significantly contribute to the emis sion of greenhouse gasses (GHG) and cause air pollution. The direct and indirect impacts of GHG and air pollutants on the environment and so cieties have been weil established. The built environment can be used as a powerful platform not only for recycling and resource conservation but also to remove near-ground gaseous contaminants. This can be done via tailored design and engineering of adsorptive construction materials via recycling of waste materials. For instance, advanced sorbent systems can be made for removing C02, H2S, and formaldehyde from air. This re quires tailored sorbent design, topology optimization, and catalytic conversion of collected gaseous compounds to name a few.
This special issue covers innovative materials, methods, and man agement practices which aim to simultaneously address durability ofthe built environment, air quality, resource conservation, and supply chain resilience. Such innovative materials, methods, and management prac tices will transform the built environment into not only an active contributor to no waste, no pollution for healthy environment, but also a medium that converts the waste and pollution into beneficial products for use in the built environment, thereby promoting resource conser vation. Followings are examples of topics that the special issue is interested in:
• Venuses to advance resource conservation specifically via novel ap proaches in the built environment.
• Innovative construction materials for passive or active adsorption of harmful gaseous emissions to conserve air, energy, and water.
• Advanced materials, methods, and management practices to pro mote well-being of the built environment.
• Smart buildings to promote resource conservation.
• Research convergence in the built environment for zero waste, zero pollution economy.
The phenomenon of expelling nanomaterial from microparticles of different materials, such as Au, WO3 or B2O3 under the influence of a convergent electron beam (CB) of a transmission electron microscope (TEM) was reviewed by Ignacio Gonzalez-Martinez [1]. Converging the e-beam in a TEM means that a high amount of energy enters the microparticle at a very local place and interact with the matter. Obviously, during the convergent beam protocol, no imaging with the electron beam is possible, but at the end, nanoparticles with different appearances lie down next to the microparticle while its size is reduced.
Hence, there is a blind spot in the observation, which we want to fill, as we want to help clarify the nature of the expelling phenomenon. One hypothesis that explains the phenomenon is the so-called damage (of the microparticle) induced by an electric field (DIEF). Within this theory, the material is ionized and expelled in form of ionic waves. Our aim is therefore to fabricate specimens with artificial microlandscapes, as schematically exemplified in figure 1a), using the focused ion beam (FIB) and micromanipulators, as experimental setups to follow the paths of the expelled material.
As a first step towards the fabrication of such specimen, we make experimental feasibility studies for each fabrication method, FIB structuring with Ga+ ion beam and micromanipulated microparticle deposition. Bridges (gray regions in Fig. 1) are created by milling a commercially available electron transparent membrane (silicon oxide or carbon) of a Cu-TEM grid. Platinum or carbon walls (blue features in Fig. 1) are built to stand on those bridges. Microparticles (yellow sphere in Fig. 1) of gold or other material are deposited in the center of the bridges.
Figure 2a) shows four square holes (black area) and between them the residual silicon oxide membrane bridges (dark grey). On top of the bridges, walls (light grey) are deposited. The width of the bridges is different, the walls overlap the holes as well as the distance between the walls is very small, so these and other parameters need to be optimized. Figure 2b) shows a square hole (black) with bridges (white) on the right side on top of a carbon membrane (grey). There are still some obstacles which needs to be eliminated. For instance, the deposition process of the walls is not reliable as visible at the wall on top where a hole arises instead of a wall.
These studies are still in progress and the results are further discussed in terms of the applicability for the DIEF experiment in the TEM.
In this work, engineered recycled mineral admixtures were obtained from four different industrial residues: basic oxygen furnace slag, iron ore tailings, quartz mining tailings and quartzite mining tailings.
The grinding performance was evaluated in two different programs and the characterization included chemical and mineralogical composition, particle morphology, and physical properties. Performance evaluations were carried out in blended pastes and mortars, including flow properties, hydration kinetics, soundness, pozzolanic activity, and compressive strength. Coarser-than-cement admixtures allowed better flow performance, greater dimensional stability and more economical production, while finer-thancementn admixtures improved mechanical performance by both filler effect and cementing activity.
Metaproteomics, the study of the collective proteome within a microbial ecosystem, has substantially grown over the past few years. This growth comes from the increased awareness that it can powerfully supplement metagenomics and metatranscriptomics analyses. Although metaproteomics is more challenging than single-species proteomics, its added value has already been demonstrated in various biosystems, such as gut microbiomes or biogas plants. Because of the many challenges, a variety of metaproteomics workflows have been developed, yet it remains unclear what the impact of the choice of workflow is on the obtained results. Therefore, we set out to compare several well-established workflows in the first community-driven, multi-lab comparison in metaproteomics: the critical assessment of metaproteome investigation (CAMPI) study. In this benchmarking study, we evaluated the influence of different workflows on sample preparation, mass spectrometry acquisition, and bioinformatic analysis on two samples: a simplified, lab-assembled human intestinal sample and a complex human fecal sample. We find that the same overall biological meaning can be inferred from the metaproteome data, regardless of the chosen workflow. Indeed, taxonomic and functional annotations were very similar across all sample-specific data sets. Moreover, this outcome was consistent regardless of whether protein groups or peptides, or differences at the spectrum or peptide level were used to infer these annotations. Where differences were observed, those originated primarily from different wet-lab methods rather than from different bioinformatic pipelines. The CAMPI study thus provides a solid foundation for benchmarking metaproteomics workflows, and will therefore be a key reference for future method improvement. The presentation gives general information about the European Standard EN 16516 “Construction products – Assessment of release of dangerous substances – Determination of emissions into indoor air”. This test standard was developed based on the mandate M/366 of the European commission and is a horizontal reference method for the determination of volatile organic compounds (VOC) from different classes of construction (building) products. Specific test conditions are to be selected by the product TCs (technical committees) in a way that a product is tested under its intended condition of use.
The test is based on the use of emission test chambers which are operated at constant air change rate and climate (23°C, 50 % r.h.) over 28 days. The standard defines the conditions and requirements for the measurement including loading factor, air change rate, sampling, analysis and calculation of emission rates of the substances. A 30 m³ reference room is described which is used to calculate air concentrations from the determined emission rates.
The standard EN 16516 enables the evaluation of construction products regarding their emissions into indoor air under defined and comparable conditions. The evaluation includes the determination of identified target compounds, non-identified target compounds, volatile carcinogenic compounds and the sum values TVOC, TSVOC and R.
Proof load testing may be performed to confirm the reliability of the bridge for an existing classification or to prove the reliability for a higher classification. In this paper, a probabilistic decision analysis approach is applied to the scenario for the evaluation of target proof load in the situation where information on the bridge resistance model is lacking. In this case, the resistance model is established by proof loading and taking very basic prior knowledge into account. The decision scenario is modelled in the context of the proof load test planner who shall choose the required load level for assessment of a bridge. The choice of the load level depends on the risks due to the testing and the expected benefit gain from the test. Information acquired about the loading response from monitoring during the proof load testing is modelled by taking basis in the model uncertainty formulation. The optimal proof load level for classification of a single lane, simply supported bridge of 8m span subjected to live load from very heavy (gross weight > 80 tons) transport vehicles was calculated. The optimal proof load level was identified as leading to a positive expected benefit gain to the decision maker while also satisfying target reliability criteria for remaining service life. The analysis was performed for the evaluation of bridge performance with respect to five classifications of very heavy transport vehicles with different vehicle weights and configurations.
Akustische Bestimmung der Werkstoffparameter faserverstärkter Kunststoffe mittels geführter Wellen
(2021)

This study shows remarkably different features between the oxidation of secondary and primary C₃-C₅ alcohols. The oxidation of primary alcohols is controlled by the oxidative removal of blocking adsorbates, such as CO, formed after the dissociative adsorption of alcohol molecules. Conversely, secondary alcohols do not undergo dissociative adsorption and therefore their oxidation is purely controlled by the energetics of the elementary reaction steps. In this respect, a different role of ruthenium is revealed for the electrooxidation of primary and secondary alcohols on bimetallic platinum-ruthenium catalysts. Ruthenium enhances the oxidation of primary alcohols via the established bifunctional mechanism, in which the adsorption of (hydr)oxide species that are necessary to remove the blocking adsorbates is favored. In contrast, the oxidation of secondary alcohols is enhanced by the Ru-assisted stabilization of an O-bound intermediate that is involved in the potential-limiting step. This alternative pathway enables the oxidation of secondary alcohols close to the equilibrium potential.
SRB are environmentally and industrially important microorganisms. The disadvantage of their metabolic activity (e.g. sulfate reduction) results in the formation of toxic sulfide that leads to microbial influenced corrosion. SRB have been responsible for biocorrosion of ferrous metal. One of mitigation strategy is the use of biocides. However, it has been shown that various bacteria develop antimicrobial resistance due to excessive use of biocides. Thus, a deeper understanding of the evolution of biocide resistance of SRB is necessary. Three commonly used biocides, THPS, BAC, and GLUT were applied to investigate the susceptibility of Desulfovibrio alaskensis G20.The minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentration and the killing kinetics of the three biocides was determined. These results will be used to conduct evolution experiments to determine the evolution of resistance towards biocides of SRBs. The outcome of this work can be helpful to improve the management of MIC treatments.
The flammable hydrogen-blended methane–air and natural gas–air mixtures raise specific safety and environmental issues in the industry and transportation; therefore, their explosion characteristics such as the explosion limits, explosion pressures, and rates of pressure rise have significant importance from a safety point of view. At the same time, the laminar burning velocities are the most useful parameters for practical applications and in basic studies for the validation of reaction mechanisms and modeling turbulent combustion. In the present study, an experimental and numerical study of the effect of hydrogen addition on the laminar burning velocity (LBV) of methane–air and natural gas–air mixtures was conducted, using mixtures with equivalence ratios within 0.90 and 1.30 and various hydrogen fractions rH within 0.0 and 0.5. The experiments were performed in a 14 L spherical vessel with central ignition at ambient initial conditions. The LBVs were calculated from p(t) data, determined in accordance with EN 15967, by using only the early stage of flame propagation. The results show that hydrogen addition determines an increase in LBV for all examined binary flammable mixtures. The LBV variation versus the fraction of added hydrogen, rH, follows a linear trend only at moderate hydrogen fractions. The further increase in rH results in a stronger variation in LBV, as shown by both experimental and computed LBVs. Hydrogen addition significantly changes the thermal diffusivity of flammable CH4–air or NG–air mixtures, the rate of heat release, and the concentration of active radical species in the flame front and contribute, thus, to LBV variation.
Performance of calcium phosphate cements in the augmentation of sheep vertebrae - An ex vivo study
(2021)
Oil-based calcium phosphate cement (Paste-CPC) shows not only prolonged shelf life and injection times, but also improved cohesion and reproducibility during application, while retaining the advantages of fast setting, mechanical strength, and biocompatibility. In addition, poly(L-lactideco-glycolide) (PLGA) fiber reinforcement may decrease the risk for local extrusion. Bone defects (diameter 5 mm; depth 15 mm) generated ex vivo in lumbar (L) spines of female Merino sheep (2–4 years) were augmented using: (i) water-based CPC with 10% PLGA fiber reinforcement (L3); (ii) Paste-CPC (L4); or (iii) clinically established polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement (L5). Untouched (L1) and empty vertebrae (L2) served as controls. Cement performance was analyzed using micro-computed tomography, histology, and biomechanical testing. Extrusion was comparable for Paste-CPC(-PLGA) and PMMA, but significantly lower for CPC + PLGA. Compressive strength and Young’s modulus were similar for Paste-CPC and PMMA, but significantly higher compared to those for empty defects and/or CPC + PLGA. Expectedly, all experimental groups showed significantly or numerically lower compressive strength and Young’s modulus than those of untouched controls. Ready-to-use Paste-CPC demonstrates a performance similar to that of PMMA, but improved biomechanics compared to those of water-based CPC + PLGA, expanding the therapeutic arsenal for bone defects. O, significantly lower extrusion of CPC + PLGA fibers into adjacent lumbar spongiosa may help to reduce the risk of local extrusion in spinal surgery.
Tribological properties of ultrahigh-molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) were studied in two different wear modes. Firstly, reciprocating sliding wear studies under non-conformal contact investigated the effects of counterface surface roughness (polished, lapped and ground) of Ti6Al4V on the friction and wear of the polyethylenes. Secondly, two-body abrasive wear studies in conformal contact against different abrasive grit size papers were also carried out to ascertain the wear sensitivity of the polyethylenes under these adverse conditions. Wear mechanisms were studied using optical and scanning electron micrographs. The results of the reciprocating sliding wear studies showed that surface roughness of the counterface influenced friction and wear characteristics although no correlation was found between the coefficient of friction and specific wear rate. XLPE demonstrated wear sensitivity, particularly under severe abrasive wear condition. The results indicated that the performance of the polyethylenes greatly depends upon the tribological system under which it is operating.
Compared with most common construction materials, fiber reinforced cementitious materials are well known to exhibit better physical, working and mechanical properties. In this study, three fibers were selected: polypropylene fiber (PPF) and polyvinyl alcohol fiber (PVAF), which represented synthetic fibers, and sisal fiber (SF), which represented natural fibers. Effects of these fibers on the flowability, rheological properties, and adsorption behavior of the cement paste with polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE) were investigated. Furthermore, the above experimental results were verified by measuring the contact angle of the fiber with water and PCE solution and the apparent morphology of the fiber. Results revealed that the addition of fibers significantly reduces the fluidity of the cement paste, while the yield stress and plastic viscosity of the cement paste increase with the addition of fibers. From the contact angle and scanning electron microscope, the surface of SF was relatively rough, and the contact angle of SF with water or PCE solution was the smallest. It can be concluded that the plant fiber has a significant influence on the fluidity and rheology of cement paste.

In mass spectrometry based proteomics, protein homology leads to
many shared peptides within and between species. This complicates
taxonomic inference. inference. We introduce PepGM, a graphical model for taxonomic profiling of viral proteomes and metaproteomic datasets.
Using the graphical model, our approach computes statistically sound

Understanding on how a machine learning model interprets data is a crucial step to verify its reliability and avoid overfitting. While the focus of the scientific community is nowadays orientated towards deep learning approaches, which are considered as black box approaches, this work presents a toolbox that is based on complementary methods of feature extraction and selection, where the classification decisions of the model are transparent and can be physically interpreted. On the example of guided wave benchmark data from the open guided waves platform, where delamination defects were simulated at multiple positions on a carbon fiber reinforced plastic plate under varying temperature conditions, the authors could identify suitable frequencies for further investigations and experiments. Furthermore, the authors presented a realistic validation scenario which ensures that the machine learning model learns global damage characteristics rather than position specific characteristics.
Determination of residual stress evolution during repair welding of high-strength steel components
(2021)
The sustainable and resource-efficient production of wind energy plants requires the use of modern high-strength fine-grain structural steels. This applies to both foundation and erection structures. During the assembly of steel structures, unacceptable defects can occasionally be found in the weld area. In most cases, the economical solution would be local thermal gouging of the affected areas and re-welding. Due to the high shrinkage restraint of the joint groove in the overall structure, the superposition of design and welding-induced residual stress can lead to crack formation and ultimately to component failure, particularly in interaction with the degradation of the microstructure and mechanical properties high-strength steels during the repair process.
In this context, component-related investigations of S500MLO and S960QL (FOSTA-P1311/IGF-Nr. 20162 N) focusing on welding residual stress evolution during local thermal gouging and rewelding. In this study, repair welding of S500MLO is carried out using in-situ digital image correlation (DIC) and ex-situ X-ray diffraction methods (XRD) to analyse strains and stresses. Therefore, self-restrained specimens were systematically gouged and rewelded with defined welding heat control (heat input, working temperature) and parameters. By means of structural mechanics calculations, geometries of self-restrained specimens were identified, that represent defined rigidity conditions of repair welds of real components. It could be shown that with increasing restraint intensity significantly higher residual stresses occur in the weld metal and heat affected zone. Furthermore, it revealed that the transverse stresses along the weld seam decrease at the weld seam ends leading to different stress state during gouging and welding. XRD analysis of the local residual stresses after cooling to RT longitudinal and transverse to the weld direction showed a good comparability with global DIC analyses.
Applying data-driven AI systems makes it possible to extract patterns from given data, generate predictions and helps making decisions. Material research and testing holds a plethora of AI-based applications, for example, for the automatized search and synthesis of new materials, the detection of materials defects, or the prediction of process and materials parameters (inverse problems). However, AI algorithms can often only be as good as the training data from which the corresponding models are learned. Therefore, it is also indispensable to develop measures for the standardization and quality assurance of such data.
For this purpose, we develop and implement methods from transferring data from various sources into a homogeneous data repository with uniform data descriptions. Through the standardization and corresponding machine-readable interfaces, research data can be made usable and reusable for further data analyses. In addition to the technical implementation of integrative platforms, it is crucial that quality-assured research data management is recognized and implemented as an integral part of daily scientific work. Finally, we provide a vision of how the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing can benefit from data-driven AI systems. We discuss early applications and take a peek at future research.
Metaproteomics has substantially grown over the past years and supplements other omics approaches by bringing valuable functional information, enabling genotype- phenotype linkages and connections to metabolic outputs. Currently, a wide variety of metaproteomic workflows is available, yet their impact on the results remains to be thoroughly assessed.
Here, we carried out the first community-driven, multi-lab comparison in metaproteomics: the critical assessment of metaproteome investigation (CAMPI) study. Based on well-established workflows, we evaluated the influence of sample preparation, mass spectrometry acquisition, and bioinformatic analysis using two samples: a simplified, lab-assembled human intestinal model and a human fecal sample.
Although bioinformatic pipelines contributed to variability in peptide identification, wet-lab workflows were the most important source of differences between analyses. Overall, these peptide-level differences largely disappeared at the protein group level. Differences were observed between peptide- and protein-centric approaches for the predicted community composition but similar functional profiles were found across workflows.
The CAMPI findings demonstrate the robustness of current metaproteomics research and provide a perspective for future benchmarking studies.

Cobalt chromium alloys are often used in turbine and plant construction. This is based on their high thermal and mechanical stress resistance as well as their high wear resistance to corrosive and abrasive loads. However, cobalt is a cost-intensive material that is difficult to machine. Moreover, increasingly complex structures and the optimisation of resource efficiency also require additive manufacturing steps for the production or repair of components in many sectors. Concerning inhomogeneity
and anisotropy of the microstructure and properties as well as manufacturing-related stresses, a lot of knowledge is still necessary for the economic use of additive welding processes in SMEs. As a result of the high stresses on the components and requirements for a high surface quality, a complementary use of additive and machining manufacturing processes is necessary. Thereby, Co–Cr alloys are extremely challenging for machining with geometrically defined cutting edges because of their low thermal conductivity combined with high strength and toughness. An approach to solve this problem is to refine and homogenise the microstructure. This is achieved by modifying the alloy with elements zirconium and hafnium, which are added up to a maximum of 1 wt.-%. A reduction of the process forces and stresses on the tool and work piece surface is also achievable via hybrid milling processes. There are already studies on the combined use of additive and machining manufacturing processes based on laser technology. However, knowledge based on powder and wire-based arc processes is
important, as these processes are more widespread. Furthermore, the effects on the surface zone of additively manufactured components by hybrid finish milling have not yet been a subject of research. The results show that the structural morphology could be significantly influenced with the addition of zirconium and hafnium.
Due to the ageing of the infrastructure facilities, a reliable assessment of the condition of concrete structures is of great interest to plan timely and appropriate measures. In concrete structures, pittingcorrosion of the reinforcement is the predominant deterioration mechanism affecting serviceability and eventually structural performance. Determination of quantitative chloride ingress is not only necessary to obtain valuable information on the current condition of a structure, but the data obtained can also be used to predict future developments and the associated risks. An overview of the progress and the possibilities of the application of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy for concrete analysis in daily civil engineering practice is given. High-resolution 2D measurements of drill cores to determine the penetration of harmful species into concrete is presented. Furthermore, the application of a mobile LIBS system in a parking garage is shown. The system consists of a diode-pumped low-energy laser (3 mJ, 1.5 ns, 100 Hz) and a compact NIR spectrometer. A scanner allows two-dimensional element mapping. Progress towards the establishment of LIBS in a leaflet for the analysis of chlorine ingress into concrete in civil engineering is presented.
Time resolved in situ monitoring of mechanochemical transformations by X-ray spectroscopy (XAS)
(2021)
Mechanochemical reactions promise a new direction for environmentally benign preparation of materials, and has been dubbed by IUPAC as one of the 10 chemical innovations that will change our world. Despite this significant promise, very little is known about the mechanisms that drive mechanochemical transformations, posing significant barriers to realizing their full potential. To this end, there is growing need to follow mechanochemical reactions in situ and in real time. We here describe advances in the development and application of XAS methods to monitor material synthesis in real time under mechanochemical conditions. We demonstrate the generality of our approaches by describing mechanochemical syntheses of materials by both vibratory ball milling and by Resonant Acoustic Mixing (RAM), where a time resolution of 1 second is for a whole XAS spectrum was achieved. Moreover, we describe how spectroscopic methods can be coupled to diffraction-based approaches, thereby providing new dimensions in understanding mechanochemical synthesis.

Assessing dissolution of upconverting nanoparticles by TEM, EDXS, potentiometry and fluorometry
(2021)
Inorganic lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNP) constitute an emerging class of near-infrared (NIR)-excitable luminescent reporters for bioimaging, fluorescence assays, sensors in bioanalysis, and optical thermometry as well as phosphors for photovoltaic and security applications.1 However, the use of UCNPs in bioimaging and cellular studies requires biocompatible particles. One possible cause of UCNP toxicity is the release of potentially harmful fluoride fluoride and lanthanide ions as revealed by dilution studies in aqueous environments, particularly under high dilution conditions.2-5 To address this issue, suitable surface coatings preventing such effects in combination with fast screening methods suited for online in situ analysis are desired.
Here we present a systematic study of differently sized β-NaYF4:Yb,Er nanocrystals stabilized with different surface coatings and different hydrophilic ligands varying in binding strength to the surface atoms in various aqueous environments at different temperatures.
Optical Stability Studies of Hexagonal Upconverting Nanocrystals and Development of Monitoring Tools
(2021)
We demonstrate the potential of time-resolved luminesence spectroscopy for the straightforward assessment and in situ monitoring of the stabilty of UCNPs. Different analytical methods were used to assess the dissolution behaviour of UCNPs in varuous media. Potentiometric and optical data were correlated to develop a new non-invasive monitoring tool for particle dissolution
Im Europäischen EMPIR-Projekt „NanoXSpot“ (Measurement of the focal spot size of Xray tubes with spot sizes down to 100 nm) werden neue Messmethoden für Brennflecke von Röntgenröhren entwickelt.
Steelmaking slags are a by-product of steel production, that are currently used primarily in road construction, earthwork, and hydraulic engineering. In this use, the iron bound in the steelmaking slags (< 30 wt.%) is lost.
Recovery of iron from steelmaking slags is possible by thermochemical reductive treatment. The reductive treatment of liquid steelmaking slags causes iron oxides to be reduced to metallic iron, which separates from the mineral phase due to its higher density. The chemical composition of the mineral phase is thus adapted to that of the Portland cement clinker and the mineral alite, the most important component of Portland cement, is formed. This way, crude iron can be recovered, and at the same time a hydraulic binder can be produced.
This process, however, is uneconomical due to the high temperatures required (~1800 °C). In the current project, the process is to be adapted so that the reduction of liquid steelmaking slag can be carried out at ~1600 °C. The chemical composition is to be modified in such a way that the melting temperature of the slags as well as their viscosity are in a technically suitable range and still a product with good cementitious properties is obtained.
Molten salt containing systems gain in importance for sustainable energy use and production. For research and development, interactions of molten salts with potential container materials are of major interest. This article introduces preparation procedures to display an intact metal and salt microstructure and their interface using light optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The exemplary material combination is the ternary salt mixture NaCl-KCl-MgCl2 and the low alloyed steel 1.4901 (T92) with a maximum service temperature of 550 °C. These are potential elements/materials for use in latent heat thermal energy storages.
Polychromatic and wavelength-selective neutron transmission radiography were applied during bead-on-plate welding on 5 mm thick sheets on the face side of martensitic low transformation temperature (LTT) steel plates using gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). The in situ visualization of austenitization upon welding and subsequent α’-martensite formation during cooling could be achieved with a temporal resolution of 2 s for monochromatic imaging using a single neutron wavelength and of 0.5 s for polychromatic imaging using the full spectrum of the beam (white beam).
The spatial resolution achieved in the experiments was approximately 200 µm. The transmitted monochromatic neutron beam intensity at a wavelength of λ = 0.395 nm was significantly reduced during cooling below the martensitic start temperature M s since the emerging martensitic phase has a ~10% higher attenuation coefficient than the austenitic phase. Neutron imaging was significantly influenced by coherent neutron scattering caused by the thermal motion of the crystal lattice (Debye–Waller factor), resulting in a reduction in the neutron transmission by approx. 15% for monochromatic and by approx. 4% for polychromatic imaging.
Raman spectroscopy is a well established tool for the analysis of vibration spectra, which then allow for the determination of individual substances in a chemical sample, or for their phase transitions. In the time-resolved-Raman-sprectroscopy the vibration spectra of a chemical sample are recorded sequentially over a time interval, such that conclusions for intermediate products (transients) can be drawn within a chemical process. The observed data-matrix M from a Raman spectroscopy can be regarded as a matrix product of two unknown matrices W and H, where the first is representing the contribution of the spectra and the latter represents the chemical spectra. One approach for obtaining W and H is the non-negative matrix factorization. We propose a novel approach, which does not need the commonly used separability assumption. The performance of this approach is shown on a real world chemical example.
Automated vibration-based damage detection is of increasing interest for structural health monitoring of engineering structures. In this context, stochastic subspace-based damage detection (SSDD) compares measurements from a testing state to a data-driven reference model in a statistical framework. In this thesis theoretical developments have been proposed to improve the robustness of SSDD for realistic applications conditions. First, a statistical test has been proposed considering the statistical uncertainties about the model obtained from the reference data. This leads to a precise description of the test’s distribution properties and damage detection thresholds. Second, an approach has been developed to account for environmental effects in SSDD. Based on reference measurements at few different environmental conditions, a test is derived with respect to an adequate interpolated reference.
The proposed methods are validated in numerical simulations and applied to experimental data from the laboratory and outdoor structures.
