Time-dependent in situ measurement of atmospheric corrosion rates of duplex stainless steel wires
(2018)
Corrosion rates of strained grade UNS S32202 (2202) and UNS S32205 (2205) duplex stainless steel wires have been measured, in situ, using time-lapse X-ray computed tomography. Exposures to chloride-containing (MgCl2) atmospheric environments at 50 °C (12–15 M Cl− and pH ~5) with different mechanical elastic and elastic/plastic loads were carried out over a period of 21 months. The corrosion rates for grade 2202 increased over time, showing selective dissolution with shallow corrosion sites, coalescing along the surface of the wire. Corrosion rates of grade 2205 decreased over time, showing both selective and pitting corrosion with more localised attack, growing preferentially in depth. The nucleation of stress corrosion cracking was observed in both wires.
Dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) was employed to investigate the dynamics of thin films (7 – 200 nm) of a Poly (vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) / Polystyrene (PS) blend (50:50 wt%). For the BDS measurements Nano-Structured Capacitors (NSC) were employed, where films have a free surface. This method was applied for film thicknesses up to 36 nm. Thicker films were prepared between Crossed Electrodes Capacitors (CEC). The spectra of the films showed multiple processes. The first process was assigned to the -relaxation of a bulk-like layer. For films measured by NSC, its rates were higher compared to that of the bulk blend. This behavior was related to a PVME-rich free-surface layer. A second process was observed for films measured by CEC (process X) and the 36 nm film measured by NSC (process X2). This process was assigned to fluctuations of PVME constraint by PS. Its activation energy was found to be thickness dependent, due to the evidenced thickness dependency of the compositional heterogeneity. Finally, a third process with an activated temperature-dependence was observed for all films measured by NSC (process X1). It resembled the molecular fluctuations in an adsorbed layer found for films of pure PVME.
Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), have a high scientific and commercial impact due to their important antibacterial properties. However, there are serious concerns about their toxicological adverse effects as a consequence of their broad range of applications. Particularly, the impact of AgNPs on cells is not very well understood yet and there is a current demand to develop analytical methodologies providing information about the interaction and distribution of AgNPs at a single cell level. In this research, mass cytometry was used to introduce a new quantitative approach to study the uptake of AgNPs by individual THP-1 macrophages as a cell model system. Here, we show that this methodology provides not only multi-variate phenotypic information of individual cells but enables the quantitative analysis of AgNPs associated to cells in a single measurement by performing an external calibration using AgNPs suspension. Using differentiated THP-1 cells, we monitored and quantified the uptake of 50 nm AgNPs in a time and dose-dependent manner by mass cytometry. 7 to 120 AgNPs per cell (2 to 89 fg Ag/cell) were determined after exposure of differentiated THP-1 cells to low AgNPs concentrations of 0.1 and 1.0 mg L-1, at time points of 4 and 24 h. The results were validated by mass cytometric analysis of digested cells working as a conventional inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, ICP-MS. This study demonstrates the power of single cell analysis by mass cytometry even for low doses experiments as a new analytical tool for hitherto unaddressed questions in nanotoxicology.

A glass of the composition 37BaO·16CaO·47SiO2 wt% produced on an industrial scale is crystallized at 970 °C for times ranging from 15 min to 2 h. The crystallization at the immediate surface as well as the crystal growth into the bulk are analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) including energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) as well as X-ray diffraction in the Θ–2Θ setup (XRD). The immediate surface shows the oriented nucleation of walstromite as well as the formation of wollastonite and an unknown phase of the composition BaCaSi3O8. All three phases also grow into the bulk where walstromite ultimately dominates the kinetic selection and grows throughout the bulk due to a lack of bulk nucleation. Walstromite shows systematic orientation changes as well as twinning during growth. A critical analysis of the XRD-patterns acquired from various crystallized samples indicates that their evaluation is problematic and that phases detected by XRD in this system should be verified by another method such as EDXS.
Unprecedented Ionization Processes in Mass SpectrometryProvide Missing Link between ESI and MALDI
(2018)
In the field of mass spectrometry, producing intact, highly-charged protein ions from surfaces is a conundrum with significant potential payoff in application areas ranging from bio-medical to clinical research. Here, we report on the ability to form intact, highly-charged protein ions on high vacuum time-of-flight mass spectrometers in the linear and reflectron modes achievable using experimental conditions that allow effective matrix removal from both the sample surfaces and from the charged clusters formed by the laser Ablation event. The charge states are the highest reported on high vacuum mass spectrometers, yet they remain at only around athird of the highest charge obtained using laser ablation with a suitable matrix at atmospheric pressure. Other than physical instrument modifications, the key to forming abundant and stable highly-charged ions appears to be the volatility of the matrix used. Cumulative results suggest mechanistic links between the ionization process reported here and traditional ionization methods of electrospray ionization and matrix-assisted laser desorp-tion/ionization.

Additive manufacturing (AM) offers an effective solution to the medical sector. It enables the production, on demand, of customised implants which match the patient’s anatomy, with grafts that promote bone growth, as well as surgical guides that help the surgeons. The objective of this project is to provide a comprehensive basis to enable the safe use of medical AM products with traceable and reliable dimensionalmeasurements. This will guarantee the reliability of medical AM products to notified bodies and facilitate acceptance of AM in the medical sector for a better quality of life.
A magnetically stabilized DC arc device, designed for operation with OES spectrometers was used to determine the elements Ag, Al, B, Ba, Be, Ca, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ga, In, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Nb, Ni, Si, Sn, Sr, Ti, V, Zr at trace levels of some μg kg−1 up to some 10 mg kg−1 in graphite powders. The coil for the generation of the homogeneous magnetic field was placed outside the closed arc chamber. The time programs of variable current strengths of the magnetic coil (up to 6 A) and of the arc (up to 17 A) which was burning in air were computer controlled. Halogenating gases (mainly CCl2F2, alternatively SF6 and NF3) were used as chemical modifiers to allow an effective release of the carbide forming trace elements. The mass flow controlled modifier gas was led through a special carrier electrode near the arc plasma. The emission radiation was guided by an optical fiber alternatively into two different ICP spectrometers in which the ICP torches were removed. The synergistic interaction of the magnetic field with the halogenating modifier gases resulted in a significant improvement in the analytical performance of the optimized analytical method. All our results for 22 trace elements were in good agreement with the means of an inter-laboratory comparison by BAM for certification of a pure graphite powder material; this holds also for our results for two other graphite materials. The optimized method showed an analytical performance suitable for comprehensive trace analysis of pure graphite. The instrumentation could be integrated into modern DC arc emission spectrometers to improve their analytical capabilities substantially.
The detection of moisture in building materials has a high priority in civil engineering to locate and prevent possible moisture damages, e.g. mold, corrosion, delamination etc. Furthermore, it is of great significancy to achieve a better understanding of moisture transport and pore space in different materials. To prevent the degeneration of structures and materials, non-destructive testing methods are more and more deployed. As a non-destructive method in this work, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is applied using a strayfield open magnet device that enables one-dimensional measurements in a defined volumen. By using NMR, the water content of the sample can be determined and also the pore size distribution can be deduced from the relaxation time distribution when having a comparison method like mercury intrusion porosimetry.
In this study different synthetic homogenous materials with defined and almost unimodal pore size distributions are investigated as well as building materials like screed. For analyzing the pore space, the samples were measured at different saturation levels and the building materials at different hydration states as well.
Proline has been widely used for various cocrystallization applications, including pharmaceutical cocrystals. Combining enantiopure and racemic flurbiprofen and proline, we discovered 18 new crystal structures. Liquid-assisted grinding proved highly efficient to explore all the variety of crystal forms. A unique combination of stateof-the-art characterization techniques, comprising variable temperature in situ X-ray diffraction and in situ ball-milling, along with other physicochemical methods and density functional theory calculations, was indispensable for identifying all the phases. Analyzing the results of in situ ball-milling, we established a stepwise mechanism for the formation of several 1:1 cocrystals via an intermediate 2:1 phase. The nature of the solvent in liquidassisted grinding was found to significantly affect the reaction rate and, in some cases, the reaction pathway.
The departure from the current automation landscape to next generation automation concepts for the process industry has already begun. Smart functions of sensors simplify their use and enable plug-and-play integration, even though they may appear to be more complex at first sight. Monitoring specific information (i.e., “chemical” such as physico-chemical properties, chemical reactions, etc.) is the key to “chemical” process control.
The talk introduces a smart online NMR sensor module provided in an explosion proof housing as example. This sensor was developed for an intensified industrial process (pharmaceutical lithiation reaction step) funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (www.consens-spire.eu). Due to NMR spectroscopy as an “absolute analytical comparison method”, independent of the matrix, it runs with extremely short set-up times in combination with “modular” spectral models. Such models can simply be built upon pure component NMR spectra within a few hours (i.e., assignment of the NMR signals to the components) instead of tedious calibrations runs.
The talk also generally covers current aspects of high-field and low-field online NMR spectroscopy for reaction monitoring and process control giving an overview from direct dissolution studies of API cocrystals to studies of emulsions for a hydroformylation.
Performing mechanical tests at high temperatures is a nontrivial issue: Compared to room temperature testing, additional phenomena like time-dependent Deformation processes and oxidation effects raise the complexity of the material’s response, while more sophisticated test setups and additional control parameters increase the number of potential sources of error. To a large extent, these complications can be overcome by carefully following all recommendations given in the respective high temperature testing standards, but more comprehensive background information helps to identify points of specific importance in particular test campaigns. In this chapter, an overview is given on general high temperature testing issues like the appropriate choice of experimental equipment and key aspects of temperature measurement. In subsequent sections, the major static and dynamic high temperature test methods are reviewed and their Special features, as compared to testing at room temperature, are highlighted based on example data sets. Influences of specimen size and environmental effects are shortly outlined in a concluding section. In the whole chapter, a focus is set on testing of “classical” metallic high temperature materials, but many considerations are equally valid for testing of intermetallics, composites, and high temperature ceramics.
Partial penetration welding with fiber laser on 20mm thick plates was carried out in horizontal position to study the role of secondary heating in modeling of high power fiber laser welding. Experiments were carried out using 18.8kW laser with 1.5 m/min welding speed at Ar assist gas flow rates of 0, 17, 29, and 40 l/min, all four cases show similar bead shape with bright emission of vapor plume. Numerical simulations were performed using volume of fluid method by considering three different models as models A–C. Model A considers only Fresnel reflection inside the keyhole using real time tracking of free surface. Model B considers vapor recondensation flux inside keyhole along with model A. Finally, model C is used, which considers vapor plume heating at 4100K temperature along with models A B. Secondary heating by recondensation and vapor plume is vital in modeling of high power fiber laser welding; especially, the upper part of the bead is more influenced due to secondary heating. Tungsten particles are also used to visualize the flow pattern of melt pool.

Bodenrezepts an.
Austenitic stainless steel welds as well as dissimilar metal welds with nickel alloy filler material, used in safety relevant parts of nuclear power plants, still challenge the ultrasonic inspection. The weld material forms large oriented grains which lead on the one hand to high sound scattering and on the other hand – to inhomogeneity and to the acoustic anisotropy of the weld structure. The ultrasonic wave fronts propagate not linearly, as in ferritic weld joints, but along the curves, which depend on the specific grain structure of the weld. Due the influence of these phenomena, it is difficult to analyze the inspection results and to classify the ultrasonic indications, which could be both from the weld geometry and from the material defects. A correct flaw sizing is not possible.
In an ongoing research project, different techniques to improve the reliability of ultrasonic testing at these kinds of welds are investigated. In a first step (in the previous research project) two ultrasonic inspection techniques were developed and validated on plane test specimens with artificial and realistic flaws. In the ongoing project, these techniques are applied to circumferential pipe welds with longitudinal and transverse flaws.
The technique developed at the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Germany uses a combination of ray tracing and synthetic aperture focusing technique (SAFT). To investigate the unknown grain structure, the velocity distribution of weld-transmitting ultrasound waves is measured and used to model the weld by ray tracing.
The second technique, developed at the Fraunhofer Institute for Nondestructive Testing (IZFP) in Germany, uses Sampling Phased Array (Full Matrix Capture) combined with the reverse phase matching (RPM) and the gradient elastic constant descent algorithm (GECDM). This inspection method is able to estimate the elastic constants of the columnar grains in the weld and offers an improvement of the reliability of ultrasonic testing through the correction of the sound field distortion. The unknown inhomogeneity and anisotropy are investigated using a reference indication and the special optimization algorithm.
Both reconstruction techniques give quantitative inspection results and allow the defect sizing. They have been compared to conventional ultrasonic testing with techniques, which are state of the art for components in nuclear power plants. The improvement will be quantified by the comparison of the probability of detection (POD) of each technique.
Calcium cobaltite is one of the most promising oxide p-type thermoelectric materials. The solid-state reaction (or calcination, respectively), which is well known for large-scale powder synthesis of functional materials, can also be used for the synthesis of thermoelectric oxides. There are various calcination routines in literature for Ca3Co4O9 powder synthesis, but no systematic study has been done on the influence of calcination procedure on thermoelectric properties. Therefore, the influence of calcination conditions on the Seebeck coefficient and the electrical conductivity was studied by modifying calcination temperature, dwell time, particle size of raw materials and number of calcination cycles. This study shows that elevated temperatures, longer dwell times, or repeated calcinations during powder synthesis do not improve but deteriorate the thermoelectric properties of calcium cobaltite. Diffusion during calcination leads to idiomorphic grain growth, which lowers the driving force for sintering of the calcined powder. A lower driving force for sintering reduces the densification. The electrical conductivity increases linearly with densification. The calcination procedure barely influences the Seebeck coefficient. The calcination procedure has no influence on the phase formation of the sintered specimens.
The aldoximes C11H9NO (I) and C15H11NO (II), synthesized in ca 90%yield, by
treatment of 1-naphthaldehyde or phenanthrene-9-carbaldehyde, respectively,
with hydroxylamine hydrochloride and sodium carbonate, have been characterized
by IR, 1H, 13C and DEPT-135 NMR spectroscopies, and also by singlecrystal
X-ray diffraction analysis. The molecules of (I) and (II) are
conformationally similar, with the aldoxime substituent groups lying outside
the planes of the naphthalene or phenanthrene rings, forming dihedral angles
with them of 23.9 (4) and 27.9 (6)°, respectively. The crystal structures of both
(I) and (II) are similar with a single intermolecular O—H...N hydrogenbonding
interaction, giving rise to the formation of one-dimensional polymeric
chains extending along the 21 (b) screw axes in each.
Polyesters with 9,10-dihydro-9-oxy-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide-containing comonomers are synthesized aiming to improve the flame retardancy of aliphatic polyesters such as poly(butylene succinate) and poly(butylene sebacate). The influence of the chemical structure on the thermal decomposition and pyrolysis is examined using a combination of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), TGA-Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, and microscale combustion flow calorimetry. Thermal decomposition pathways are derived and used to select suitable candidates as flame retardants for PBS. The fire behavior of the selected polymers is evaluated by forced-flaming combustion in a cone calorimeter. The materials show two modes of action for flame retardancy: strong flame inhibition due to the release of a variety of molecules combined with charring in the solid state.

The hydrogen tightness of high-pressure hydrogen storage is a Basic criterion for long-term storage. The H2 permeation coefficients of epoxy resin and a glass lacquer were determined to enable the geometric optimization of a glass capillary storage. It was found that the curing conditions have no significant influence on the H2 permeation coefficient of resin.
The H2 permeation coefficient of epoxy resin is only about three orders of Magnitude greater than that of borosilicate glass. This suggests that the initial pressure of 700 bar takes about 2.5 years to be halved in capillary array storage. Therefore, a high-pressure hydrogen storage tank based on glass capillaries is ideally suited for long-term storage in mobile applications.
We demonstrate ultrafast soliton-based nonlinear balancing of dual-core asymmetry in highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber at sub-nanojoule pulse energy level. The effect of fiber asymmetry was studied experimentally by selective excitation and monitoring of individual fiber cores at different wavelengths between 1500 nm and 1800 nm. Higher energy transfer rate to non-excited core was observed in the case of fast core excitation due to nonlinear asymmetry balancing of temporal solitons, which was confirmed by the dedicated numerical simulations based on the coupled generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations. Moreover, the simulation results correspond qualitatively with the experimentally acquired dependences of the output dual-core extinction Ratio on excitation energy and wavelength. In the case of 1800 nm fast core excitation, narrow band spectral intensity switching between the output channels was registered with contrast of 23 dB. The switching was achieved by the change of the excitation pulse energy in sub-nanojoule region. The performed detailed analysis of the nonlinear balancing of dual-core asymmetry in solitonic propagation regime opens new perspectives for the development of ultrafast nonlinear all-optical switching devices.
We present an in situ PXRD investigation of the mechanochemical cocrystal formation of pyrazinamide with pimelic acid in two milling jar materials. DFT calculations of the two synthesized polymorphs suggest that the relative stability is based on a conformation change of pyrazinamide in the cocrystal.
A novel method to generalize kinetic data of viscous crack healing in glasses is proposed. The method assumes that crack healing progress is proportional to the healing time, t, and indirect proportional to viscosity, n. This way, crack length and crack width data, normalized to the initial crack length and plotted versus t/n, allow to compare crack healing progress for different cracks and healing temperatures in a master curve. Crack healing experiments conducted in this study demonstrate the applicability of this method for a commercial microscope slide glass.
Distributed Fibre Optic Sensing for Monitoring and Testing of Industrial and Civil Infrastructures
(2018)
Fibre optic sensors enable the gathering of sensory information in environments where conventional sensors fail or simply can not be utilised. Their small size enables their use in confined spaces as well as their embedding or integration in components, structures or composite materials while offering, depending on the approach, high sensitivity, very high spatial resolution and, especially, the possibility to detect or measure physical quantities in a distributed way, meaning spatially continuous sensing over very long distances.
Those distributed fibre optic sensors (DFOS) provide access to sensing information from different locations along the sensing fibre without the need for technologically challenging multiplexing of many point sensors and the subsequent sensor data fusion. In this way, DFOS are excellently suited as smart sensors for monitoring or testing purposes as the spatially distributed sensing data make available spatially resolved measurand profiles without a gap. Furthermore, the possible embedding or integration of DFOS could facilitate the development of smart structures or smart components. In particular distributed vibration sensing (DVS) and distributed temperature sensing (DTS) are also ideally suited for condition monitoring of machinery, industrial installations or extensive infrastructure, also, on-line real-time assembly or component testing in production lines, e.g. for quality control, is possible.
In this talk, we will shortly outline the underlying principles of some fibre optic sensing approaches, explain their fundamental differences in mode of operation and performance, and discuss their applicability and limitations. Moreover, we will report on a subset of current and previous applied research projects at BAM, investigating different areas of use for distributed fibre optic sensors in particular.
Contrast-variation small-angle neutron scattering (CV-SANS), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of diffusion and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) are used to gain insight into the aggregation of an alkyl–C60 derivative, molecule 1, in n-hexane, n-decane and toluene as a function of concentration and temperature. Results point to an associative mechanism of aggregation similar to other commonly associating molecules, including non-ionic surfactants or asphaltenes in non-aqueous solvents. Little aggregation is detected in toluene, but small micelle-like structures form in n-alkane solvents, which have a C60-rich core and alkyl-rich shell. The greatest aggregation extent is found in n-hexane, and at 0.1 M the micelles of 1 comprise around 6 molecules at 25 °C. These micelles become smaller when the concentration is lowered, or if the solvent is changed to n-decane. The solution structure is also affected by temperature, with a slightly larger aggregation extent at 10 °C than at 25 °C. At higher concentrations, for example in solutions of 1 above 0.3 M in n-decane, a bicontinuous network becomes apparent. Overall, these findings aid our understanding of the factors driving the assembly of alkyl–π-conjugated hydrophobic amphiphiles such as 1 in solution and thereby represent a step towards the ultimate goal of exploiting this phenomenon to form materials with well-defined order.
One of the holy grails in chemistry is to reconstruct some of life’s functions with synthetic materials. In this contribution, we demonstrate that “simple” macromolecular architectures such as dendritic amphiphiles, Janus dendrimers, thermoresponsive and hybrid organic-inorganic (co)polymers enable to mimic some of the functions of proteins for biomineralization, natural bactericides, biological membranes or the stimuli-responsive cytoskeleton.
During the past few years significantly increasing research activities in the field of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS, ripples) have been reported since the generation of LIPSS in a single-step process provides a simple way of surface nanostructuring towards a control of optical, mechanical or chemical surface properties. In this contribution the current research state in this field is reviewed. The formation of LIPSS upon irradiation of metals, semiconductors and dielectrics by multiple linearly polarized Ti:sapphire fs-laser pulses (30-150 fs) is studied experimentally and theoretically. Different types of LIPSS with periods even below 100 nm can be generated. Their dynamics and formation mechanisms are analyzed and identified in ultrafast optical experiments. Complementing theoretical calculations of the laser-induced carrier dynamics address transient changes of the optical properties of the irradiated materials and reveal the importance of surface plasmon polaritons in the early stage of LIPSS formation. Various applications of these nanostructures are outlined.
Subsurface characterization of high-strength high-interstitial austenitic steels after impact wear
(2018)
The microstructure of the subsurface after impact wear of three high-strength high interstitial austenitic steels has been analysed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in alloys with C and N as interstitial elements. In all cases, a nanocrystalline region followed by a transition zone and a cold-worked area are present. Additionally, microhardness and nano-scratching tests were conducted to study the wear-related properties of the impact subsurface and the base material. The results of the microstructural analysis reveal that the following mechanisms are involved during impact wear: abrasion (ploughing), microcrack formation associated with contact fatigue, entrapment and adhesion of SiO2 particles. The analysis of the wear-related properties indicates that the subsurface acts as a self-protective layer that prevents the deterioration of the substrate.
The Scaled Boundary Finite Element Method (SBFEM) is a semi-analytical method that showed promising results in modelling of guided ultrasonic waves. Efficiency and a low computational cost of the method are achieved by the discretisation of the boundary of a computational domain only, whereas for the domain itself the analytical solution is used. By means of the SBFEM different types of defects, e.g. fatigue cracks, pores, delamination, corrosion, integrated into a structure consisting of anisotropic and isotropic materials can be modelled.
In this contribution, the SBFEM is used to analyse the propagation of guided waves in a structure consisting of an isotropic metal bonded to anisotropic carbon fibre reinforced material. The method allowed to identify appropriate wave types (modes) and to analyse their interaction with different defects. Obtained results will be used to develop a structural health monitoring system for composite pressure vessels used in automotive industry.
