The introduction of an innovative process for non-destructive testing is described in terms of its different phases and how the process is controlled in the Fraunhofer IZFP in order to obtain optimal results. Examples are discussed of applications by IZFP in various important and safety-relevant industrial sectors where the automated inspection systems were introduced. These case studies include the inspection of railway components such as the wheel sets of the German high-speed train and in-line pipe inspection by using intelligent pipeline inspection gauges. Complex inspection systems, both hardware and software, developed in partnership with the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Inspection (BAM), were applied to inspection tasks in civil engineering. Two automated systems based on a robot and on a flexible manipulation are presented. Both systems can be applied to diverse inspection technologies and to the data fusion of various types of non-destructive testing (NDT) data.
Dielectric Investigation of Nanocomposites based on Polypropylene and Layered Double Hydroxide

Following a modular concept an integrated monitoring system has been developed that includes all components of offshore wind turbines (OWEC). Using commercially available measurement equipments of the involved partners this system was tested at the wind turbine Multibrid M5000_2 in Bremerhaven. Additional results of the research project are findings on the use of embedded FBG sensors in rotor blades that allow condition assessments based on local information. Newly developed algorithms for the identification of external loads and damage characteristics of the structural components have been tested in operation. Developed methods for monitoring based structural assessment were used, which will be suitable to optimize structural maintenance works.
In drop test scenarios related to assessing and licensing the storage procedure of spent fuel and high active waste, the casks under examination are generally not equipped with impact limiters. Hence, the extent of mechanical stresses in case of an assumed handling accident is largely affected by the ground properties of the reception hall floor in the specific storage facility.
Unlike conventional brittle foundation materials, damping concrete performs quite well in such applications as it features high stiffness as well as high energy absorption due to the filler pore volume. However, its damping ability is not sufficiently exploited in current finite element (FE) calculations due to a lack of advanced material models for simulating its impact response. An implementation of qualified concepts that account for plastic, strain rate dependent behavior requires additional information that has to be provided by systematic test series.
BAM recently started a research project to generate such data, subsequently to develop and to improve numerical methods for the analysis of impact limiters and damping foundation material and thus to optimize safety assessment tools for the design of transport and storage casks. A major part of this research concerns dynamic compression tests of variably shaped specimens conducted at a servo hydraulic 1MN impact testing machine as well as at a BAM facility for guided drop tests. This presentation focuses 100mm damping concrete cubes deformed vertically at constant rates under different constraint conditions. For example, a special fitting jig was constructed to subject the specimens to multi-axial loading. Thereby a deformation of 60% could be applied.
Simulation was conducted by FE code ABAQUS based on material models Concrete damaged plasticity and Crushable foam which both allow defining rate sensitive nonlinear stress-strain relations in compression beyond the classic metal plasticity approach.
Numerical simulation of 9 meter drop of a transport and storage cask with aluminium impact limiter

For the purpose of numerical simulation of 9 meter drop of a transport and storage cask with aluminium impact limiter, an elastic-incremental plastic material model with strain rate hardening acc. to Cowper-Symonds is used for the development of isothermal as well as adiabatic stress-strain relations of aluminium from the compression test at constant ambient temperature. After that, two different simulation strategies are compared. At first, the drop test is calculated fully coupled, i.e. with isothermal stress-strain relations and possible heat generation in the material. Then the drop test is recalculated in a very simplified manner with adiabatic stress-strain relations from the compression test in an isothermal simulation. Both calculation strategies show similar results in the investigated load scenario.
During carbon capture and storage (CCS) CO2-corrosion of pipe steels is a relevant safety issue when emission gasses are compressed in deep geological layers. The reliability of the steels 42CrMo4, X20Cr13, X46Cr13 and X35CrMo17 is demonstrated in long term laboratory experiments up to 2 years of exposure time. Testings were carried out at ambient pressure under an equivalent corrosive environment as found at the geological onshore CCS-site at Ketzin, Germany (T=60 °C, aquifer water).
Stress corrosion cracking is a transcrystalline or intercrystalline crack formation in materials which
occurs under the influence of static tensile stress or residual stress and a specific aggressive
medium such as chloride containing substances.
This special sort of crack formation is involved in complex crack configurations, which may
only insufficiently be captured by conventional ultrasonic probes with fixed angles of incidence.
Only a number of different beam angles produce sufficient reflection to reconstruct the complete
defect shape from measured ultrasonic data. The SAFT algorithm, which was recently successfully
used in many industrial NDT-applications, is a promising tool for the reconstruction process. In
addition, the combination of phased array technique and SAFT was developed in several projects
by BAM, Berlin. Investigations using phased array equipment were performed to look into crack
configurations in test blocks with different surface curvatures. UT-SAFT has been used for the
analysis of spark-eroded notches simulating stress corrosion cracks at the thermo sleeve weld of a
nozzle. For comparison, UT-SAFT has also been applied for the analysis of real reflectors at the
same position in a nozzle used in a power plant, which was repaired later on. SAFT-scans received
from reconstructed ultrasonic measurement data confirm the practical usefulness of the SAFTalgorithm
developed by BAM.
Mechanical design assessment approaches of actual spent fuel and HLW transport package designs

The temperature dependences of dielectric permittivity and elastic modulus of poly(vinylidene fluoride - hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF-HFP)) are compared and explained by use of structural data obtained by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray analysis. Special emphasis is put on the effect of uniaxial stretching which renders the polymer ferroelectric. It is shown that dielectric and mechanical relaxations at the glass transition (aa relaxation) are closely related and not significantly affected by stretching. It is further confirmed that stretching destroys the non-polar spherulitic crystalline structure and produces relatively small-sized polar crystallites. This manifests in the disappearence of the so-called ac relaxation which is associated to molecular motions within the spherulitic crystalline lamellae. However, there are discrepancies between dielectric and mechanical losses above the glass transition which point towards a still not described structural transition.
Requirements and test programs for sealed radioactive sources are specified in international standards for safety in transport and in use.
Sealed sources which are approved as special form radioactive material according to the Transport Regulations, IAEA Safety Standards TS-R-1, must be able to withstand mechanical (9 m drop, percussion and bending) and thermal (800°C heat) tests without loss of radioactive content.
The International Standard ISO 2919 provides a set of tests which classifies the sources for their safety in use. Performance tests specified in this standard are temperature (high and low), external pressure, impact, vibration and puncture tests. Each test can be applied at different levels of intensity depending on typical usage.
As a criterion of pass or fail, leakage testing has to be done after each test.
The poster gives an overview of BAM s comprehensive test equipment and experience in testing sealed radioactive sources.
En los últimos anos el registro y análisis del ruido electroquímico ha posibilitado importantes avances en la investigación de fenómenos de corrosión localizada tales como el picado y la corrosión en rendijas. Así mismo, esta técnica a abierto enormes posibilidades para el monitoreo in situ de tales procesos corrosivos en la industria. Sin ninguna duda, la posibilidad de registrar en tiempo real y con extrema sensibilidad los procesos de nucleación de la corrosión localizada, hace de la técnica de ruido electroquímico una invaluable herramienta para alcanzar una mejor comprensión de su origen y propagación. A continuación se discutirán las fuentes de ruido electroquímico relacionadas con la corrosión localizada así como los avances alcanzados para una confiable adquisición y análisis de la información electroquímica suministrada por las senales de ruido electroquímico y se ilustrarán con ejemplos prácticos las ventajas de la técnica de ruido electroquímico para la evaluación de la corrosión localizada.

A highly resolving fibre optic sensor based on the Fabry-Perot technology has been developed for
integration into concrete piles with the purpose of static and dynamic pile testing as well as monitoring. The
paper presents the design of the sensitive element and first results of large-scale model pile tests.
In this study, we use and extend a recently developed zonal cooperative inversion approach and apply it to the inversion of three independent geophysical field data sets. We invert crosshole P-wave, S-wave, and georadar data sets acquired in sand and gravel dominated unconsolidated sediments to detect and characterize different sedimentary units relevant for an engineering or hydrological site characterization. The zonal cooperative inversion of the three traveltime data sets results in a single subsurface model, which is a geophysical three-parameter model (P-wave, S-wave, and georadar velocity) outlining the major subsurface zonation while explaining all input data sets. Comparing our zonal model to direct push (DP) logging data (tip resistance, sleeve friction, and dielectric permittivity) shows good agreement; i.e., the zones in our geophysical model largely correspond to major DP parameter changes. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the sparse DP data can be inter- and extrapolated to the entire tomographic plane which allows for further geotechnical and hydrological interpretations. This study illustrates that the zonal cooperative inversion approach is highly flexible and an excellent tool to characterize a variety of environments in terms of multiple physical parameters.
The most efficient construction materials for boiler water walls and superheaters in steam power plants are ferritic and martensitic steels. In practical operation, tubes are exposed simultaneously to combustion gas and air/steam on their opposite surfaces. The corrosion behavior of ferritic-martensitic steels under such dual atmospheres is nondistinctive and has been investigated in a specially designed test equipment between 500°C and 620°C. The power plant conditions were simulated with a flowing and pressurized (80 bar) combustion gas on the inner side of the tube, which contains water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2). On the outer side, tube material was exposed to air. Oxides that formed on the air side under dual atmosphere conditions were significantly different from the oxide scales formed when the alloy was exposed to air only. It is assumed that the anomalous corrosion behavior during the dual atmosphere exposure is due to hydrogen and carbon diffusion through the bulk alloy from the combustion gas side to the air side. Both species are produced when the material reacts with the gas phase. Because of its high diffusivity, hydrogen is thought to affect the corrosion process on the air side from the beginning of the corrosion exposure, whereas carbon reaches the opposite side after a considerably longer time period.
The surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectrum of a reporter molecule attached to gold or silver nanostructures, which is pH-sensitive, can deliver information on the local pH in the environment of the nanostructure. Here, we demonstrate the use of a mobile SERS nanosensor made from gold nanaoaggregates and 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (pMBA) attached as a reporter for monitoring changes in local pH of the cellular compartments of living NIH/3T3 cells. We show that SERS nanosensors enable the dynamics of local pH in individual live cells to be followed at subendosomal resolution in a timeline of cellular processes. This information is of basic interest for a better understanding of a broad range of physiological and metabolic processes as well as for a number of biotechnological applications.
Surface-enhanced Raman scattering: a new optical probe in molecular biophysics and biomedicine

Sensitive and detailed molecular structural
information plays an increasing role in molecular biophysics
and molecular medicine. Therefore, vibrational
spectroscopic techniques, such as Raman scattering, which
provide high structural information content are of growing
interest in biophysical and biomedical research. Raman
spectroscopy can be revolutionized when the inelastic
scattering process takes place in the very close vicinity of
metal nanostructures. Under these conditions, strongly
increased Raman signals can be obtained due to resonances
between optical fields and the collective oscillations of the
free electrons in the metal. This effect of surface-enhanced
Raman scattering (SERS) allows us to push vibrational
spectroscopy to new limits in detection sensitivity, lateral
resolution, and molecular structural selectivity. This opens
up exciting perspectives also in molecular biospectroscopy.
This article highlights three directions where SERS can offer interesting new capabilities. This includes SERS as a
technique for detecting and tracking a single molecule, a
SERS-based nanosensor for probing the chemical composition
and the pH value in a live cell, and the effect of socalled
surface-enhanced Raman optical activity, which
provides information on the chiral organization of molecules
on surfaces.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) labels and probes consisting of gold and silver nanoaggregates and attached reporter molecules can be identified by the Raman signature of the reporter molecule. At the same time, SERS hybrid probes deliver sensitive molecular structural information on their nanoenvironment. Here we demonstrate full exploitation of the multifunctional and multiplexing capabilities inherent to such nanoprobes by applying cluster methods and principal components approaches for discrimination beyond the visual inspection of individual spectra that has been practiced so far. The reported results indicate that fast, multivariate evaluation of whole sets of multiple probes is feasible. Spectra of five different reporters were shown to be separable by hierarchical clustering and by principal components analysis (PCA). In a duplex imaging approach in live cells, hierarchical cluster analysis, K-means clustering, and PCA were used for imaging the positions of different types of SERS probes along with the spectral information from cellular constituents. Parallel to cellular imaging experiments, cytotoxicity of the SERS hybrid probes containing aromatic thiols as reporters is assessed. The reported results suggest multiplexing applications of the nontoxic SERS nanoprobes in high density sensing and imaging in complex biological structures.
The processes associated with pollen germination were studied in vitro for two tree species, Salix caprea and Fraxinus excelsior under different nutrient conditions. The results provide evidence of changes in chemical composition of the pollen grains during germination. From the comparison of spectra of the pollen grain body and the growing pollen tube, it can be concluded that there are major chemical differences between these two morphological units. Comparison of germinated and ungerminated pollen grains reveals alterations in the metabolism. Composition of the germinating pollen grain and its morphological units depends on the plant species, but also on the nutrient conditions. The results suggest species-specific utilization of metabolite storage, and potential alterations of the pollen outer coat. Furthermore, discharge of molecules into the nutrient medium may depend on the nutrient conditions in the germination experiments. This has implications for further experiments on dynamic processes in pollen and related plant materials.
In this paper, we focus on the role of graphs and graph transformation for four practical application areas from software system development. We present the typical problems in these areas and investigate how the respective systems are
modelled by graphs and graph transformation. In particular, we are interested in the usefulness of theoretical graph transformation results and graph transformation tools in order to solve these problems. Finally, we characterize concepts and tool features
which are still missing in practice to solve the presented and related problems even better.

Kantenfindung von Strukturen mit nur geringem Absorptionskontrast erwiesen.
Solche Messungen können besonders gut mit monochromatischer Röntgenstrahlung
hoher räumlicher Kohärenz durchgeführt werden, wie sie bei der Synchrotron-
Computertomographie (SY-CT) benutzt wird. Nachteilig wirken sich allerdings die
Phasenverschiebung des Synchrotronstrahls über das Strahlprofil und damit die
Kantenverbreiterung in den zu untersuchenden Strukturen aus. Daher ist ein
dimensionelles Messen mit normalen Rekonstruktionsverfahren nicht möglich. In
der vorliegenden Arbeit werden neue Filterverfahren zur Korrektur der
Phasenverschiebung unter Beibehaltung des erhöhten Kontrastes bei der
Rekonstruktion angewandt, um ausgewählte einkomponentige Referenzobjekte
hinsichtlich der dimensionellen Messeigenschaften zu untersuchen. Als Referenz
werden rückgeführte Messungen mit taktilen Koordinatenmessmaschinen
herangezogen. Die Untersuchungen wurden im freien Strahl durch Variation des
Abstandes zwischen Objekt und Detektor am Strahlrohr der BAM am Helmholtz-
Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie - Speicherring BESSY II durchgeführt.

We report the results of an analytical investigation
on 416 silver-copper coins stemming from the Ottoman
Empire (end of 16th and beginning of 17th centuries), using
synchrotron micro X-ray fluorescence analysis (SRXRF).
In the past, analyses had already been conducted with energy
dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis (EDXRF), scanning
electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry
(SEM/EDX) and proton induced X-ray emission spectroscopy (PIXE).With this combination of techniques it was
possible to confirm the fineness of the coinage as well as to
study the provenance of the alloy used for the coins.
For the interpretation of the data statistical analysis
(principal component analysis—PCA) has been performed.
A definite local assignment was explored and significant
clustering was obtained regarding the minor and trace elements
composing the coin alloys.
The Sarmizegetusa bracelets

We present the authentication and analysis of these beautiful Dacian bracelets of the first century BC, originally pillaged by treasure hunters and recovered thanks to an international crime chase. They were originally fashioned from gold panned from the rivers or dug from the mines of Transylvania and hammered into the form of coiled snakes. The lack of context is the greatest loss, but a votive purpose is likely given their proximity to the great sacred centre at Sarmizegetusa Regia.

Zwei Bildhauermodelle aus dem Georg-Kolbe-Museum Berlin standen
zur Restaurierung an. Das kleinere, "Lucino" (1920), 41cm, wurde hochauflösend
mit CT gemessen, da mittels CT sowohl der Herstellungsprozeß einer Gipsstatue
als auch der innere Zustand, wie Ergänzungen, Klebungen und Armierungen,
festgestellt werden können. Aus den CT Bildern ergab sich eine für die vorher vermutete
Gipszusammensetzung ungewöhnliche innere Struktur. Mit einer Freihand
bedienten Röntgenpistole zur Messung der Röntgenfluoreszenz wurde daraufhin die
Zusammensetzung des Materials der Statuette als Terracotta bestimmt. Durch den
Einsatz von Helium als Spülmittel konnten auch leichte Materialien nachgewiesen
und so eine Unterscheidung zwischen Gips und gebranntem Ton durchgeführt werden.
Aus den CT Daten wurde eine virtuelle Darstellung der äußeren Geometrie gewonnen.
Ein damit versuchsweise erstelltes Replik (Rapid Prototyping, 3D-Drucker,
TU-Berlin) entsprach nicht den Anforderungen des Museums zur Erstellung einer
Gußform für eine Bronzekleinserie der Statuette.
Die zweite Statue, die "Große Nacht" (1930) ist mit ihrer Größe von 2,12m und aufgrund
des durch korrodierende Metallarmierung verursachten Schadensbildes nicht
mehr transportfähig. Eine in-situ Untersuchung mit dem mobilen Tomographen, der
in den 1980ern zur Untersuchung von Bäumen gebaut und jetzt mit einem modernen
Flachdetektor und einer Röntgenröhre ausgestattet ist, wird vorgestellt. Die Möglichkeiten
der in-situ CT für große Skulpturen werden anhand der Ergebnisse diskutiert.
In the frame of the European harmonization, new European technical standards (Eurocodes) have been developed in recent years. Classical methods, like tables and simplified analytical procedures, as well as general engineering techniques are allowed by the Eurocodes for the fire protection design. The modeling and calculation of fire scenarios with CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) numerical methods is one of the general engineering methods. It is nowadays still difficult to check and evaluate the CFD results for their use as technical documents for fire safety design.
Analytical engineering techniques, zone models and CFD-models have been used and compared in the present work for the prediction of the fire development in a building.
To solve the conservation equation for the CFD-model, the CFD-program FDS, with the mixture fraction model, and the CFD-program FLUENT, with the one step reaction model as well as with the volumetric source term model, have been used.
The combustion of polyurethane is modeled in FDS by specifying the heat release rate and the stoichiometry. For the combustion in volumetric source term model, the heat release rate and the smoke release were specified with respect to the stoichiometry. The input parameter for the one step reaction model is the pyrolysis mass flow.
In the one step reaction model, the transport equations for polyurethane, H₂O, N₂, O₂, CO₂, CO and C (soot) are solved and the heat of combustion is determined from the standard formation enthalpy of all the components. In volumetric source term model, the transport equation is solved for air and smoke. FDS solves the transport equation for the mixture fraction.
To model the fire development, and where no literature data was available, the required material characteristics like specific heat capacity, absorption coefficient and heat of combustion were measured.
In all the investigated CFD-models the heat- and species transport equation has been solved and the absorption coefficient of soot has been considered.
Furthermore, the fire development has also been investigated using zone models with the programs CFAST and MRFC.
Results from analytical engineering techniques (plume calculations), which were design criteria in the past, have been used as plausibility checks for the present work. The calculation results from the investigations were compared to measurements in the same building performed by the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST).
In the lightweight body shell mass production of automobiles, the application of hybrid bonding techniques becomes more and more important. Especially the combination of adhesive bonding and resistance spot welding called weldbonding is of great importance. The target of this contribution is to show the influence of medium-viscosity and low-viscosity structural adhesives on the process reliability of the weldbonding process and the mechanical properties of the hybrid bonded joints. The given results are based on the application of an epoxy PUR-based, an epoxy resin-based and a rubber-based adhesive system for joining a mild and some different advanced high strength steels (AHSS). It will be shown that both the process reliability of the weldbonding process and the mechanical behaviour of the weldbonded joints are influenced by the combinations of the base metals, the applied adhesive systems and the choice of the joining parameters. The behaviour of the weldbonded joints will be studied under quasi-static and impact loads. The discussion of the metallurgical structure of the weldbonded joints depending on the joining parameters will be given, too. Furthermore, the fatigue behaviour of the weldbonded joints will be studied.
