The effect of critically moving loads on the vibrations of soft soils and isolated railway tracks

The dynamic response of the railway track is strongly influenced by the underlying soil. For a soft soil and very high train speeds or for a very soft soil and regular train speeds, the train speed can be close to the speed of elastic waves in the soil. This paper presents a detailed study of the so-called moving-load effect, i.e. an amplification of the dynamic response due to the load movement, for the tracks on soft soil. The analysis is carried out by evaluating the related integrals in the wavenumber domain. The influence of the load speed is quantified for a large set of parameters, showing that the effect on the soil vibration is reduced with increase of the frequency, track width and inverse wave velocity. Therefore, the moving-load effect associated with vibratory train loads is negligible whereas the amplification associated with the moving dead weight of the train can be significant. The strong moving-load effect on a perfectly homogeneous soil, however, can be strongly diminished by a layered or randomly varying soil situation. This theoretical result is affirmed by measurements at a test site in Germany where the trains run on a very soft soil at a near-critical speed. The results for soft soils are compared with experimental and theoretical results for a stiff soil. It is found that the influence of the stiffness of the soil is much stronger than the moving-load effect. This holds for the soil vibration as well as for the track vibration which both show a minor dependence on the load speed but a considerable dependence on the soil stiffness in theory and experiment.
Railway tracks can include soft isolation elements such as rail pads, sleeper shoes and ballast mats. For these types of isolation elements and normal soil conditions, the influence of the load speed is usually negligible. There is only one isolation measure for which the moving load may be effective: a track which is constructed as a heavy massspring system. The resonance of this track system is shifted to lower frequencies and amplitudes for increasing train speed. A critical train speed can be reached if the massspring system has a marginal bending stiffness along the track.
The aim of this contribution is a practice-oriented prediction of environmental building vibrations. A Green's functions method for layered soils is used to build the dynamic stiffness matrix of the soil area that is covered by the foundation. A simple building model is proposed by adding a building mass to the dynamic stiffness of the soil. The vertical soil-building transfer functions with building-soil resonances are calculated and compared with a number of measurements of technically induced vibrations of residential buildings. In a parametrical study, realistic foundation geometries are modeled and the influence of incompressible soil, deep stiff soil layering, soft top layers, and increasing soil stiffness with depth is analyzed. All these special soil models reduce the resonant frequency compared to a standard homogeneous soil. A physically motivated model of a naturally sedimented soil has a stiffness increasing with the square root of the depth and yields a foundation stiffness that decreases with foundation area considerably stronger than the relatively insensitive homogeneous soil. This soil model is suited for the Berlin measuring sites and reproduces satisfactorily the experimental results.

muß auf Grund der oftmals geringen Menge an Probenmaterial eine
Vervielfältigung der Probe durchgeführt werden, die jedoch leicht zu
Fehlern führt. Im Rahmen dieses Projektes werden zwei experimentelle
Ansätze verfolgt, durch die ohne einen Verlust an Sensitivität
eine Vervielfältigung der Probe vermieden werden kann, 1) das Etablieren
eines RCA-basierten Microarray Assays und 2) die Optimierung
des Assays für die Detektion der Fluoreszenzsignale.
Vier neue Referenzmaterialien zum chemischen Nachweis von Acrylamid in Knäckebrot, Schwefel in Benzin, von polyzyklischen aromatischen Kohlenwasserstoffen und von Legierungen in Akkus stellt die BAM vor. Diese Referenzmaterialien sind durch die BAM zertifiziert und durch das Europäische Referenzmaterialien Programm ERM auf den Markt gebracht.
This article presents a snapshot of key issues regarding characterization of granular waste materials with respect to their reuse as alternative construction materials, and the factors that need to be considered in their reutilization in order to comply with soil and groundwater protection regulations.
Dielectric, anti-reflective or high reflective systems consist of low and high refractive index layers. Common systems are oxides. The preparation of low refractive index MgF2-films of optical quality by means of an anhydrous low temperature solgel synthesis is presented. The MgF2-sol is prepared by spin-coating on silicon and glass substrates. Various film thicknesses between 20 nm and 435 nm have been deposited. It has been shown that the thickness increase is proportional to the number of coating steps. The deposited MgF2-films consist of 10 nm to 20 nm large nanoparticles and have smooth surfaces with an average roughness (Ra) of (1.7 ± 0.3) nm. The optical constants n and k of the films are in agreement with the literature data of bulk-MgF2.
Spacers and supports belong to the critical elements in the structure of a nuclear fusion device, particularly, when they are installed in the vacuum or superconducting magnet system of the reactor. These supports have to sustain high loads while allowing a certain amount of tangential movement with low friction and without any stick-slip motion. Vacuum and cryogenic environments are extremely hostile for smooth sliding systems, because conventional liquid lubricants cannot be employed, and only a very limited number of materials for dry sliding systems under these conditions are available. In order to test the friction behaviour of support elements in the field coils of the fusion experiment WENDELSTEIN 7-X, a test rig was build which allows testing in liquid helium environment at 4.2 K, with a normal force up to 150 kN, and a sliding velocity of 0.1 mm/s in oscillating motion. First tests have shown that the apparatus is appropriate for simulating the sliding behaviour of support elements. As an example, a result of an earlier model test of an MoS2-coating is shown.
Influence of the Temperature on the Tribological Behaviour of PEEK Composites in Vacuum Environment

This paper describes tribological experiments carried out with polyetheretherketone (PEEK), filled with carbon fibres and solid lubricants (polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), graphite or MoS2), against steel discs. Oscillating sliding tests were performed in high vacuum environment in the temperature range between -40°C and +160°C. Results indicate that MoS2 filled PEEK show the best tribological performance in vacuum. Particularly, in the lower temperature range and at higher loads the friction behaviour is improved by the MoS2 content.
The determination of O, N and H using a microwave induced plasma coupled to carrier gas hot extraction was exploratory investigated. The signal intensities versus time of blanks and calibration materials were recorded. To check for interferences the signal intensities versus wavelength were recorded at the times just before increase and at the maximum of the time dependent analytical signal. O, N and H were investigated at their prominent wavelengths of 777 nm, 174 nm and 486 nm, respectively. Calibration was performed for O, N and H in the ranges of 027 µg, 351000 µg and 343 µg respectively. For concentration values in the middle of the linear part of the investigated calibration interval, a relative precision of 5% at 13 µg, 2% at 74 µg and 0.6% at 23 µg for O, N and H respectively was found. The maximum matrix load to the plasma used was found to be 150 µg min-1. From the signal to noise ratio and the sensitivity obtained, instrumental limits of detection (3s) of 0.01 µg for O, 1 µg for N and 0.1 µg for H were found. Assuming a typical sample mass of 1 g this corresponds to relative LODs of 0.01 µg g-1, 1 µg g-1 and 0.1 µg g-1 for O, N and H respectively.
The purpose of this paper is to underline the future need for OEMs to receive lowSAP, polymer- and metal-free engine oils with high-viscosity indices and to illuminate for other OEMs the technical feasibility for application of alternative engine oils based on esters or blends of hydrocarbons with esters or polyglycols.
Design/methodology/approach The strategic goal depends technically on the use of intrinsic properties of alternative base fluids, thus substituing some additives, like anti-wear, extreme pressure and viscosity index improvers. The prone wear resistance of novel triboactive/-reactive materials enables higher portions of mixed/boundary lubrication generated by oils with a lower viscosity.
Findings Overall, the different bionotox and low-ash prototype engine oils with reduced additive contents displayed isoperformance regarding the tribological behaviour against cast iron and triboreactive materials. APS-Tin-2Cr2O2n-1 displayed an overall wear resistance comparable with grey cast iron with high-carbon content and liner wear reduction of one order of magnitude when mated with Mo-based rings. Both tests confirmed the potential for substituing molybdenum-based rings by APS-Tin-2Cr2O2n-1. The most significant reduction in system wear down to zero wear was demonstrated by mating the APS-Tin-2Cr2O2n-1 coated piston rings with smooth machined HVOF-(Ti,Mo)(C,N) liner coatings.
Research limitations/implications As lubricants are today not part of the core business of automotive OEMs, the next steps have to be proposed by the petrochemical suppliers. It is recalled here that some OEMs in their history developed and produced lubricants.
Practical implications The customer will appreciate any increase in longevity resulting in reduced maintenance. The OEM now owns, under increased solicitations, now a future-oriented tool box in order to respond to environmental and CAFÉ demands with reasonable cost management.
Originality/value This OEM report displays the complete methodology in order to adopt alternative engine oils in existing engine architectures.
Ester oils obtained from natural long-chain fatty acids and alcohols are versatile substitutes for many petroleum-based products. Their efficient synthesis with the solvent-free esterification of free fatty acids (FFA) from by-products of biodiesel fabrication and 2-ethyl-1-hexanol with immobilised lipase from Thermomyces lanuginosa was investigated. The immobilisation of the biocatalyst in static emulsion yielded a specific esterification activity that was higher by a factor of 4.9-9.4 than the activity of the native enzyme. Favourable properties of the silicone-based immobilisation matrix in terms of stability and immobilisation yield were observed. In biodiesel by-products, the immobilised lipase catalysed the esterification of FFA as well as the transesterification of residual fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) to the desired ester oils. A conversion of 90% FFA and 35% FAME gave a total yield of 60%. The inactivation coefficients during repeated use in a stirred-tank reactor with intermittent pressure reduction were exceptionally low.
