In the last decade, high-strength fine grained steels and welding consumables have gained a strong raise of application ranging from mobile cranes to bridge constructions. However, the cracking susceptibility of these steels increases significantly in correspondence with the achieved improvements in yield strength and the loss in plastic deformation reserves.
In order to determine this behavior a series of different standardized cold cracking tests has been developed. One remaining major problem of these tests is the uncertainty about the quantitative intensity of the restraint conditions as well as the corresponding welding residual stresses.
Consequently, the comparison of different tests and welding conditions as well as the transferability of the results onto real parts is difficult at best. The main topic of this paper is the analysis of the restraint conditions and their link with the welding induced residual stresses. The importance of the given standardized selfrestrained tests and first results about the transferability of
results onto real parts are discussed. The influence of the test specimen geometry on the restraint conditions of the test is investigated for a selected test with numerical Simulation using commercial FEA software. Additionally, the residual stresses caused by the welding process are measured and linked with the restraint conditions which are defined mainly by the geometry parameters.
Finally the transferability of the selected cold cracking test results is validated experimentally. The test results of a multilayer weld on high-strength fine grained steel of real size weldments are investigated. For these experiments a 16 MN large scale testing facility is used which is capable of applying the high reaction forces and clamping conditions found at large scale demonstrator parts.
The results show the importance of the quantitative knowledge of the restraint conditions and the welding residual stresses on the cold cracking resistance.
Unsere bisherigen Untersuchungen lassen sich in zwei Stufen unterteilen. Eine erste Analyse /L-13/ ermittelte für alle Explosionsgruppen den Zusammenhang zwischen Schlagenergie, Ge-mischzusammensetzung, Oberflächenrauhigkeit der Schlagplatte und Zündwahrscheinlichkeit, wobei als Schlagenergie die Werte W = 3 Nm, 10 Nm und 190 Nm dienten. Die aktuelle Analyse hat die statistische Erfassung von Verhalten und Zündfähigkeit einzelner abgetrennter Partikel unter dem Einfluss von Schlagenergie und Gemischzusammensetzung zum Ziel
Es besteht ein direkter Zusammenhang zwischen der kinetischen Schlagenergie und der Zünd-wahrscheinlichkeit: Je höher die kinetische Schlagenergie, umso höher die Wahrscheinlichkeit zur Erzeugung zündfähiger mechanischer Stahl-Schlagfunken.
Für die Gemische der IEC-Explosionsgruppe IIC bedeutet das eine signifikante Zunahme der Zündwahrscheinlichkeit durch Stahl-Schlagfunken von 1,5 % (für Wasserstoff) bis 3,0 % (für Ace-tylen) bei W = 10 Nm auf 100 % bei W = 190 Nm. Bei Ethylen beträgt die Zunahme der Zünd-wahrscheinlichkeit von 0 % auf 16,6 % und bei Propan von 0 % auf 6,7 %. Diese Abhängig¬keiten sind in Abb. 1 dargestellt.
Unterhalb einer kinetischen Schlagenergie von 3 Nm konnten mit der angewendeten Schlagki-nematik, Schlaggeometrie und Werkstoffen keine zündfähigen mechanisch erzeugten Stahl-Schlagfunken erzeugt werden.
Following to a brief introduction of BAM the procedures are explained how to prepare reference materials in analytical chemistry. Examples are given for collecting and presenting data in welding, thermomechanical properties and tribology. The use of data for modelling safety in technology and chemistry is demonstrated. Finally there is in outlook on the World Materials Research Institut Forum (WMRIF) and recommendations for action.
Irrational orientation relationship derived from rational orientation relationships using EBSD data

The determination of the orientation relationship (OR) between α-Fe matrix (bcc) and γ-Fe precipitates (fcc) is discussed using orientation data collected by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The comparatively low accuracy of EBSD is compensated by the high number of measurements what allows a general statement regarding to the mean OR existing in a sample. The representation and discussion is realized on a part of the Bain zone in a {001} pole figure. A discussion of some selected rational OR which are commonly used for the phase boundary characterization between α and γ shows that the pole figures describing a transformation from γ → α are different to those for α → γ. A technique is proposed based on at least three misorientation angles between the experimental OR to the rational OR's as reference. For the misorientation angle distribution a refinement is applied to extract the mean values. They are used to detect the mean OR, what is also possible for only a few or even a single precipitate if the number of measurements describing the phase boundary is sufficiently high.
The tetragonal crystal- structure type of chalcopyrites (chemical formula AIBIIICVI2) is a superstructure of sphalerite type. The c/a ratio differs generally from the ideal value 2, i.e., the crystal structure is pseudocubically distorted. For CuInSe2 and CuGaSe2 thin films, simulations demonstrate that it is theoretically possible to reveal the tetragonality in electron backscatter-diffraction (EBSD) patterns for CuGaSe2, whereas it may not be possible for CuInSe2. EBSD experiments on CuGaSe2 thin films using the ”Advanced Fit” band-detection method show that it is possible to extract accurate misorientation-angle distributions from the CuGaSe2 thin film. Pole figures revealing the texture of the CuGaSe2 thin film are shown, which agree well with X-ray texture measurements from the same layer.
Um den Erfordernissen des Grundwasser- und Bodenschutzes zu entsprechen ist die Kenntnis des Elutionsverhaltens von Abfall- und Bodenmaterialien erforderlich, wenn diese z.B. zur Verwertung im Straßen- oder Landschaftsbau vorgesehen sind. Im Zusammenhang mit der Novellierung der Bundes-Bodenschutzverordnung und der Einführung der Ersatzbaustoffverordnung sowie in Auswertung der Ergebnisse des BMBF-Verbundvorhabens „Sickerwasserprognose“ wurden vom DIN-Normenaus-schuss Wasserwesen, Unterausschuss „Eluierungsverfahren“ zwei Verfahren zur Elution von Fest-stoffen erarbeitet, die im Oktober 2007 als Entwürfe veröffentlicht wurden. Dabei handelt es sich um ein Säulenperkolationsverfahren zur gemeinsamen Untersuchung des Elutionsverhaltens von orga-nischen und anorganischen Stoffen (E DIN 19528) und ein Schüttelverfahren mit einem Wasser-/ Feststoff-Verhältnis (W/F) von 2 l/kg zur Untersuchung der Elution von anorganischen Stoffen (E DIN 19529). Beide Verfahren sind für Bodenmaterialien und mineralische Abfälle mit einer Korngröße bis 32 mm vorgesehen.
Für Normen die in Verordnungen zitiert werden sollen, ist eine Verfahrensvalidierung erforderlich. Im Rahmen dieses Vorhabens waren die Verfahrenskenndaten auf der Grundlage von Ringversuchen zu ermitteln. Zunächst wurden vier für die Verordnungen relevante Materialien (Hausmüllverbrennungs-asche, Recyclingbaustoff, Bodenmaterial, Stahlwerksschlacke) als Referenzmaterialien (RM) aufberei-tet. Die zu analysierenden Parameter wurden unter Berücksichtigung der Regelungsrelevanz in Abstimmung mit dem Auftraggeber ausgewählt. Die RM wurden gemeinsam mit Referenzlösungen an die 53 Teilnehmer der Ringversuche ausgegeben. Die statistische Auswertung der Ringversuchsergebnisse erfolgte nach DIN 38402-42, wobei der Gesamtmittelwert aller Teilneh-mer als Sollwert herangezogen wurde.
Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass akzeptable Reproduzierbarkeiten für organische und anorganische Schadstoffe durch geeignete Vorgaben sowohl für Schütteltests als auch für Säulenversuche erzielt werden können. Dies gilt insbesondere unter Berücksichtigung des breiten Korngrößenspektrums der RM, der relativ hohen zugelassenen Toleranzen für das W/F bei den Säulenversuchen und des kurzen Bekanntheitsgrades der Normenentwürfe.
Die ermittelten Verfahrenskenndaten finden Eingang in die abschließende Bearbeitung der Normen.
The feasibility of reinforcing conventional carbon fiber composites by grafting carbon nanotubes (CNTs) onto the fiber surface has been investigated. Carbon nanotubes were grown on carbon fibers using the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. Iron was selected as the catalyst and predeposited using the incipient wetness technique before the growth reaction. The morphology of the products was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which showed evidence of a uniform coating of CNTs on the fiber surface. Contact angle measurements on individual fibers, before and after the CNT growth, demonstrated a change in wettability that can be linked to a change of the polarity of the modified surface. Model composites based on CNT-grafted carbon fibers/epoxy were fabricated in order to examine apparent interfacial shear strength (IFSS). A dramatic improvement in IFSS over carbon fiber/epoxy composites was observed in the single fiber pull-out tests, but no significant change was shown in the push-out tests. The different IFSS results were provisionally attributed to a change of failure mechanism between the two types of tests, supported by fractographic analysis.
