Contact formation and development are the basis of friction and wear modelling and understanding. Unanimously topography formation and development in friction contacts are regarded of highest importance for understanding and modelling friction processes. The frequently found running in behaviour of sliding contacts is—aside from the build up of reaction and transfer layers-at least partly caused by the topography development due to friction processes until a stable equilibrium state is reached.
Experimental results of friction and topography measurements are presented which demonstrate the mutual modification of friction and contact topography.
A special experimental set up with an AFM allowed to correlate the measured friction forces with the contact position and the topography at this point. In this way, friction force transitions and changes can be assigned to topography changes due to abrasion, adhesion and wear particle agglomeration.
Contact surfaces with artificial regular structures have been prepared to avoid problems with topography and friction correlation due to the statistical nature of roughness on technical contact surfaces. The friction effects of roughness were simulated by etched ditches of defined width, depth and distance on silicon or metal surfaces. This allowed to explain the mutual influences of topography and friction. The effect of a single asperity and of the 'roughness structures' could be demonstrated.
Topography measurements with an AFM correlated with the friction force could help to understand friction changes without changing any parameter.
The project RECARC is to demonstrate the complete recycling of slag gained from the stainless steel production after the AOD-process. Due to the high content of chromium, this slag is only usable in qualitative inferior applications. Thermochemical treatment by arc furnace enables the separation of chromium from the mineral fraction. The recovered chromium can be returned as raw material into the stainless steel production. Furthermore, the processing turns the slag into a useful building material. The investigations focused mainly on nearly complete reduction and removal of the chromium from the mineral fraction. The process parameters were optimised and different reducing agents (carbon, aluminium, FeSi and SiC) were tested. The chromium content of an AOD-slag was successfully significant decreased to >0.1% by resistance melting in addition of petroleum coke as reducing agent. By adding adequate additives and a granulation of the slag the mineral fraction can be simply improved to a phase, which is similar to typical cement components. Furthermore, EOF-slag, which consist much more chromium compounds, was tested. In this slag 80% of the chromium was successfully removed. Totally 30 melting experiments with a total conversion of 5.5 tons of stainless steel slag had been carried out. Thus, totally 220 melting products were gained. Although the characterisation of the products was affected by technical reasons, appearing problems could be solved by choosing alternative characterisation methods.
The project results were published more than 20 times (presentations in journals and on international conferences, press releases, poster presentations, internet page).------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
angekoppelt, was eine große Anwendungsvielfalt
zylindrische Longitudinalwellenprüfköpfe in Zweikopftechnik

In practice usually thin-walled cylindrical silos are supported locally at the bottom rim of the shell. In this area a stress concentration may occur, which is responisble for buckling of the shell. In the currently applied codes, there is no information, how to analyze the load-bearing capacity of theselocally supported shells. In this paper, a new design formula is given for determining the load-bearing capacity.

Aluminium oxide films were prepared by a dip-coating procedure from solutions of hydrolysed aluminium-tri-sec-butoxide in methoxyethanol on austenitic steel as well as hard metal tools. The heat treatment was performed in an argon atmosphere or vacuum at temperatures up to 1100 °C. Characterisation of the coatings by SEM, showed nearly crack free coatings with a dense morphology which completely cover the substrate. The chemical composition of the coatings was investigated by ESCA, GD-OES and XRD measurements. This analysis detected a multi-layered arrangement of spinel phases, ?- and ?-alumina in the coatings. The scratch test showed sufficient adhesion of the coatings comparable to CVD layers. Pin-on-disc and oscillating sliding tests were carried out on solgel coated samples and also on uncovered reference samples. The determined wear rates and friction coefficients showed significant improvement in wear resistance of solgel coatings containing a corundum phase. The strong adhesion to the substrates is due to a layered assembly formation and gradient composition of the coating caused by an interdiffusion of metal cations and oxygen in the metal/oxide interface during heat treatment.
Five miniaturized sensors based on dew-point,
capacitance or resistance measurement were tested for the
detection of humidity in compressed gases.
The dew-point sensors with optical or dielectric detection of
condensation were used at gas pressures up to 3 MPa in
dew-point range of -20 to 70°C and show no systematic
deviation and an uncertainty of dew-point temperature
mostly less than 1 K. The LiCl sensor has also a low
uncertainty but exhibit a systematic deviation to higher
values of dew-point. Capacitive polymer sensors can
indicate also a dew-point, even down to -70 °C and have an
uncertainty of about 1 to 2 K. The oxide sensor works in the
dew-point range of -10 to 20°C and has a signal what
exponential decreases with increasing gas pressure up to 10
MPa.
All types of sensor can be applied in compressed gases at
least up to 3 MPa, but their different change of sensor signal
due to the gas pressure has to be considered.

Supporting elements between large superconducting magnets like the field coils in WENDELSTEIN 7-X have to sustain high loads while allowing a certain amount of tangential movement without any stick-slip motion. In model tests with reciprocating friction in liquid helium and vacuum a PVD-MoS2-coating has proven its suitability for these components. It showed a very stable sliding behaviour with a friction coefficient below 0.1 without coating failure under all test conditions.
This paper presents the mechanical and tribological properties of
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and Polyetheretherketone (PEEK)
matrix composites filled with short carbon fibers in cryogenic
environments. Tensile tests were performed at room temperature (RT)
in air and in LN2. Tribological experiments were carried out with a
pin-on-disc configuration at RT, in LN2, in LH2 and in LHe. PEEK
composites have a better tribological performance than PTFE materials
especially regarding the wear resistance.
