Recent progress in the development of A1GaN/GaN heterostructure field effect transistors (HFETs) Shows the great potential towards high temperature / high power electronics. Nevertheless investigations on reliability properties of GaN-based devices are still at the beginning. The frequently used Ti/A1 based ohmic and Pt based Schottky contacts suffer from strong Degradation after aging at elevated temperatures. Therefore new contact systems have to be employed. Concerning the source and drain metallization we used an amorphous WSiN barrier layer as applied for GaAs on top of the Ti/Al-based ohmic contact. This technique significantly reduces the in-diffusion of the Au-containing overlayer, furthermore the barrier layer guaranties smooth contact morphology after RTA and aging, respectively. For the Schottky metallization the Ir/Au system was used. Reliability studies performed on HFET devices containing refractory Ti/A1/Ti/Au/WSiN ohmic and Ir/Au Schottky contacts demonstrate stable conditions during 120h aging at 500°C.
Our aim is the application of LIBS as a simple, quasi on-line method for the non-destructive testing of concrete. Concrete is naturally inhomogeneous. Therefore we must take into account the local variation of the element composition using a statistical analysis. Depending on how much cement and aggregate is measured with each laser pulse, a scan on the surface of a concrete specimen produces a distribution of points in the Rankin diagram which is used to characterise the concrete.

The successive fatigue failure process, i.e. crack initiation and growth up to electrical failure, has been investigated for a flip chip configuration. A cracked and uncracked solder bump was analysed using an unified viscoplastic constitutive model (Chaboche). The electrical failure of a bump seems to be reached in general not before a deep crack has grown into the bump. In order to update the actual loading situation two different cracked structures were calculated.
The finite element method was used to simulate the thermo-mechanical behaviour of a flip chip under thermocyclic loading between -55°C (-67°F) and 125°C (257°F). In order to simulate realistically the inelastic material response of the solder bump, Chaboche's viscoplastic material model instead of a classical ORNL-theory was implemented into the finite element code ABAQUS and applied to a flip chip configuration. This so-called unified constitutive model is able to describe the Bauschinger effect as well as the creep/plasticity interaction. Herewith the influence of the substrate material on the inelastic deformation behaviour of a tin-lead solder bump was analysed. A comparison is given with respect to the influence of the two substrate materials namely Al2O3 and our self-developed Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramics (LTCC) on the inelastic response of the Sn60Pb40 eutectic solder material. It may be shown that the thermoelastic behaviour of the LTCC substrate significantly reduces the cyclic stresses in the bump compared to Al2O3 as well as the cumulative inelastic strain which is responsible for the development of damage and hence flip chip failure

A recently developed theoretical model represents the generalization of the indentation of a sphere into an infinite homogeneous halfspace to the problem of a Hertzian load acting on a halfspace covered with one or more films having different elastic properties. The model allows the analytical calculation of the complete elastic stress field and the deformations within the films and the substrate. Some results of the model shall be confirmed by nanoindentation experiments using an UMIS-2000 nanoindenter into Si3N4/SiO2 and SiO2/ Si3N4 double layers on BK7 glass and Si(100) single crystal. The materials used allow accurate measurements due to their homogeneous, amorphous structure as well as low surface and interface roughness. After the determination of the instrument compliance and the real, depth dependent indenter radius the measured loaddepth data are compared with calculated results. It is shown that measurement results can be correctly interpreted by the model. The onset of plastic deformation is investigated for the same samples by multiple partial unloading experiments with a 4-µm radius diamond sphere. The critical load at which a first deviation from a wholly elastic response occurs is used for a stress calculation with the model. The mechanical behavior of the different film combinations is interpreted by means of the von Mises comparison stress. The measured results, together with the analytical modeling, allow an optimization of the thickness and modulus of the individual layers to get a maximum mechanical stability.

X-ray computed tomography (CT) and mercury porosimetry were combined to connect density gradients and the distribution of open porosity in a sintered compact. CT clearly showed that open porosity follows the initial distribution of low-density zones. Mercury porosimetry detected three distinct levels of porosity. Microstructural examination correlated the porosity level with the coordination of (i) two to three or (ii) multiple grains around pores. This combination of techniques provides a novel tool for the study of pore and density-gradient evolution during sintering.
Up to the present, the thermomechanical loads during welding and subsequent cooling under design-specific shrinkage restraint resulting from the interaction between the materials and the structure have often not been taken into consideration approperiately for weldability assessment of components. As compared to previous investigations using small specimens this report presents component weld tests under varying intensities of restraint. Online records of the reaction forces and moments demonstrate in which way the intensity of restraint affects the reaction stresses and moments and their meaning for the evaluation of the load level in welded components.
Hydrogen might cause severe degradation of supermartensitic stainless steels, if they are activated during exposure to sour environments. Consistent and comprehensive data for hydrogen transport in these materials are thus required to support, in particular, modelling of hydrogen assisted cracking as a part of life time assessment of welded steel components. In addition to previously published diffusion coefficients and subsurface concentrations of a supermartensitic stainless steel further data dependent on heat treatment are provided by this contribution. Furthermore, a higher alloyed material has been investigated in the state as received and also in the quenched condition, in order to approach the influences of chemical composition on hydrogen transport in supermartensitic stainless steels. With respect to welding it turned out that the diffusion coefficient and the subsurface concentration are markedly dependent on heat treatment of the materials.
Düring the past decades, weldability studies have predominantly been concentrated on the material and the welding process. In order to achieve a closer insight into the structural effects, component weldability tests have been performed by online monitoring of the reaction forces and moments. As a particular item, the effects of different strengths of the base and filier material on the reaction force and stress build up transverse to the welding direction have been studied at a specific structural restraint. As a most relevant result for practical welding it is demonstrated that the final reaction force and also the reaction stress level in the multilayer butt welds decreases with overmatch of the weld metal.
Hydrogen assisted steel corrosion and cold cracking is still a major topic regarding the reliability of welded steel components, such as offshore platforms and pipelines. Measurement of local and crack critical hydrogen concentrations in a specific weld is difficult and not very precise. Numerical simulations of hydrogen uptake and diffusion developed within the last twenty years have to be regarded as much more effective to determine local hydrogen concentrations in crack critical regions of welds. As an overview of existing theories of the state of the art in modelling of hydrogen cracking in steels, the present contribution shows that the development of a comprehensive numerical model for both types of hydrogen assisted cracking in welds, hydrogen assisted stress corrosion cracking and cold cracking, is still a major research task. As a first step towards that direction, a basic procedure for numerical simulation of crack initiation and propagation has been developed and experimentally verified. The approach can be extended to a comprehensive quantitative model for life time prediction and risk based inspection of welded steel components. (Steel specimen used was S355 along with other materials such as AISI 321, Incoloy 800, Inconel 690 and 600.)

SFC/FTIR, SFC/APCI-MS and MALDI-TOF-MS for the analysis of siloxane-ethylene oxide copolymers

Polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMSs) modified by introducing ethylene oxide units with the aim of forming sufficiently water-soluble siloxane compounds were characterized using supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) coupled with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (APCIMS), and matrix-assisted laser desorptionionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDITOF-MS). SFC has a domain in analyzing oligomers. Hyphenated techniques enable elucidation of the components. Remarkable is the resolution and short analysis time of MALDITOF-MS. SFC also allows quantification of the basic and reaction products.
A new application of neutron transmutation doping is described. The method is useful to prepare graded zinc contents in highly pure copper materials. The research reactor BER II at the Hahn-Meitner-Institute, Berlin served as a neutron source. The zinc content produced in the samples was analyzed by determining the 65Zn-activity via gamma-spectrometry. Simultaneously irradiated flux monitors were used to determine the neutron flux density. Since cylindrical sample geometries are favorable for a reference material application in optical emission (OE) spectroscopy, the spatial distribution of the induced activity in a cylinder with a diameter of 8 mm and a length of 35 mm was investigated.

The influence of electric field strength and emitter temperature on dehydrogenation and CC cleavage in field desorption (FD) mass spectrometry of polyethylene (PE) oligomers of average molecular weights ranging from 500 to 2000 is examined. Low mass oligomers yield molecular weight (MW) distributions that are basically in accordance with results from gel-permeation chromatography. For these materials, dehydrogenation can be greatly reduced by reduction of the emitter potential. Furthermore, the influence of emitter potential on MW distributions indicates the occurrence of field-induced CC cleavages. Reliable MW distributions are more difficult to obtain from higher mass oligomers by FD-MS because of the need for higher field strength and higher emitter temperatures to effect their desorption/ionization. Experiments reveal that the application of FD-MS to PE oligomers is limited not only by field-induced but also by thermally-induced fragmentations. Even then, FD mass spectra contain valuable information on mass range and homogeneity of PE samples up to about m/z 3600.

The development of two metallizations based on the solid-phase regrowth principle is presented, namely Pd/Sb(Zn) and Pd/Ge(Zn) on moderately doped In0.53Ga0.47As (p=4×1018 cm-3). Contact resistivities of 23×10-7 and 67×10-7 ?cm2, respectively, have been achieved, where both systems exhibit an effective contact reaction depth of zero and a Zn diffusion depth below 50 nm. Exhibiting resistivities equivalent to the lowest values of Au-based systems in this doping range, especially Pd/Sb(Zn) contacts are superior to them concerning metallurgical stability and contact penetration. Both metallizations have been successfully applied for contacting the base layer of InP/In0.53Ga0.47As heterojunction bipolar transistors.
Autoignition temperature (AIT) round robin tests were conducted by seven laboratories on eight polymeric materials. A statistical analysis was conducted that focused on investigating data variability both within and between test methods. With some exceptions, the methods ranked the materials consistently and as expected from their chemical makeup. There was no consistent difference between AIT values determined at 6.9 and 10.3 MPa. BAM and ASTM G72 consistently provided lower, more conservative AITs at both 6.9 and 10.3 MPa. Within an estimated accuracy obtained from all methods from this round robin, data from the following methods appeared to be more accurate than the rest: NF E 29763/88 and Parr Bomb at 6.9 MPa; automated ASTM G72 at 10.3 MPa. The following methods provided lower within-method variability than the average for all methods: BS 3N 100 and ASTM G72 at 6.9 and 10.3 MPa; Parr Bomb at 6.9 MPa. At 6.9 MPa the BAM method provided data with greater within-method variability than the average for all methods. For most materials, the automated ASTM G72 method at 10.3 MPa provided data with greater within-method variability than the average for all methods. Two data points for this method, Zytel? and Teflon? FEP, exceeded critical . At 6.9 MPa, the largest within-method variability resulted from NF E 29763/88 on Zytel, the only data that exceeded critical . Two extreme results were caused by significant effects of method-specific test parameters: BAM on Zytel at 6.9 MPa and BS 3N 100 on Viton? at 10.3 MPa. Statistically these results had a probability of less than 5 percent of occurring by chance.
