Bioabbaubare Kunststoffe
(1998)
Biodegradable plastics
(1998)
Recycling decreases the disposal problem of plastic waste, however this gives rise to additional costs. It would be ideal if plastic products could become part of a biological material cycle where the products could be decomposed by microorganisms into their basic components. BAM has made a major contribution to the development of a standardised method for testing the biological degradability of plastics. Nowadays products of compostable plastic are available in shops.
Stahlbeton im Test
(1998)
Testing reinforced concrete
(1998)
Reinforced concrete is the most frequently used building material for load-bearing components in buildings and bridges. The mix of steel bars and concrete is capable of carrying high loads and can be shaped easily. BAM possesses special test equipment in which plates and girders from reinforced concrete can be tested using both static and dynamic loads. The test results indicate that materials can be used more economically while maintaining the same level of safety.
Asphaltic plug joints
(1998)
The section of roadway between the normal carriageway and the road surface of a bridge or tunnel is called a ‘roadway transition’ or 'asphaltic plug joints' by engineers. Steel is normally used for these transitions but since the 1980s, asphalt has also been used. The cost of maintaining and cleaning asphalt transitions is low and travel comfort is relatively high. BAM has developed suitable test criteria and methodologies for quality assuring such transitions. A new set of rules has been established based on the findings which now forms the basis for the approval of asphalt roadway transitions.
IBC im Feuer
(1998)
IBCs on fire
(1998)
IBC is short for Intermediate Bulk Containers. The most common IBCs consist of a palette, a plastic tank with a maximum volume of 3000 litres and a simple pipe grid frame. If dangerous goods are transported in it, the IBC must be certified. BAM is the relevant authority for the approval within Germany. An approval contains safety engineering tests, e.g. fire tests, and these tests must prove that the container is suitable for dangerous goods transport.
Platinum does not form any adherent oxides and can be easily wetted by tin-based solders. Platinum is also an available metallization in semiconductor laboratories. Therefore we investigated the diffusion of platinum thin-film metallizations into eutectic tin–lead solder by using a high-resolution secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) profiling from the back side. It is shown that an intermetallic phase (PtSn4) is formed during soldering, which controls the consumption of platinum during soldering and in operation. The consumption of platinum follows the well-known parabolic diffusion law. The activation energy of this process is 0.63 eV. Even at extended heating cycles of 2 min at 250°C, 190 nm from the original 300 nm of the platinum film remain undissolved. This high stability makes platinum a very attractive thin-film metallization for flip-chip (FC) bonding of new microsystems.
The formation of AlN films prepared by N+2 ion implantation into aluminium was investigated using X-ray and Auger photoelectron spectroscopy ( XPS, AES) as well as cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (XTEM). After 100-keV N+2 implantation of low doses (1×1017 cm−2), the formation of hexagonal AlN nanocrystals (crystal size <5 nm, Ncrystal=1017 cm−3) was observed. Their orientation is strongly correlated with the aluminium matrix. With the dose increasing to 3×1017 cm−2, crystal growth follows, finally forming a homogeneous AlN-layer. Furthermore, the diffraction patterns show an increasing amount of misorientation with increasing dose. From the crystal size distribution, we conclude that continuous nucleation takes place. Samples implanted with an energy of 3 keV exhibit analogous behaviour. Nitride growth was further investigated using microstructured AlN formed by 3-keV implantation through movable TEM-masks (structure size: 15–150 mm).
In the case of high N+2 doses (D&5×1017 cm−2), AlN is detected by AES in the shielded area at a distance of up to 10 mm from the exposed region. The Diffusion coefficient was calculated to be 10−10 cm2 s−1. The formation of AlN proceeds in two steps.
After a continuous nucleation, diffusion-assisted Crystal growth takes place until a homogeneous AlN layer results.
Mechanical properties, i.e. hardness and elastic modulus, of amorphous SiO2 and Si3N4 PE-CVD coatings have been studied for two coating thicknesses (0.1 and 1.0 µm) and two substrate materials (fused silica, i.e. Herasil, and borosilicate glass, i.e., BK7) using low load instrumented indentation. The coating systems are being considered for possible use as reference materials for thin film mechanical property test methods. Single layers of SiO2 and Si3N4 and a multilayer stack consisting of five double layers of SiO2/Si3N4 (individual layer thickness: 0.1 µm) were investigated on both substrate materials. A special plasma pre-treatment of the substrates prior to deposition ensured that coating adhesion exceeded inner film stress for all systems considered. The applied indentation load ranged from 700 down to 0.1 mN and resulted in indentation depths from more than 1 µm to about 15 nm. The influence of coating thickness and the effect of the substrate on the measurement of hardness and elastic modulus of the films are discussed, with emphasis on the effects of indentation depth vs. coating thickness on the observed coating properties. One coatingsubstrate system (1.0 µm Si3N4 on Herasil) out of ten was found to be above a critical threshold for tensile cracking of the coating. In this system, termed overcritical, tensile cracks occurred both prior to, and as a result of, indentation, indicating that Berkovich indentation may also be used to probe residual film stress.

This report presents a fast data assimilation method to produce an interpolating time and space temperature distribution for steel members subject to fire testing. The method assimilates collected temperature data into the numerical integration of the heat equation. This physically based method also allows the computation of lateral and axial heat flux into and inside the member.
Abstract Porous and finely dispersed certified reference materials (CRM) were certified using the gas adsorption method. The special certification procedure for IUPAC isotherm classification types I, II, and IV is presented for meso- and macroporous materials with special emphasis on specific surface area, specific pore volume and pore width according to standards DIN 66 131, 66 134, and 66 135. Four CRMs (SiO2, f-Al2O3, two transition aluminas) with a macro- and mesopore range are presented. Certification was made on the basis of BCR guidelines in connection with interlaboratory tests (altogether 38 participating laboratories, 44 various gas adsorption apparatus).
We report measurements of the optical breakdown threshold and ablation depth in dielectrics with different band gaps for laser pulse durations ranging from 5 ps to 5 fs at a carrier wavelength of 780 nm. For tau <100 fs, the dominant channel for free electron generation is found to be either impact or multiphoton ionization (MPI) depending on the size of the band gap. The observed MPI rates are substantially lower than those predicted by the Keldysh theory. We demonstrate that sub-10-fs laser pulses open up the way to reversible nonperturbative nonlinear optics (at intensities greater than 1014 W/cm2 slightly below damage threshold) and to nanometer-precision laser ablation (slightly above threshold) in dielectric materials.
Laser cleaning of delicate biological composite materials such as ancient parchment manuscripts from the 15th and 16th century and printed paper from the 19th century is demonstrated with an ultraviolet excimer pulsed laser at 308 nm. Laser fluence levels must stay below the ablation and destruction threshold of the parchment or paper substrate, and have to surpass the threshold of the contaminant matter. Foreign layers to be removed must exhibit a higher optical density than the artifact substrates. Synthetic carbonaceous dirt modelled by water-soluble black crayons showed a characteristically weak featureless laser-induced plasma spectroscopy spectrum near the noise limit. It turned out that laser-induced plasma spectroscopy is of limited use in monitoring halting points (or etch-stops) because it relies on the destruction not only of the laterally inhomogenously distributed contaminant but also of pigment phases on a microscopically rough parchment substrate. Laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy, however, promises to be a valuable non-destructive testing technique for etch-stop monitoring.
