The production of secondary materials from waste materials requires, in most cases, significantly lower energy amounts than the primary material production of raw materials. Along with lower energy demand, the greenhouse gas emissions produced are also lower. The duty of a modern waste management system should therefore be to collect and sort the waste materials in a way that the highest amounts of single material fractions with the highest qualities can be generated. In this contribution, the greenhouse gas balances of the theoretical treatment of the household waste, if collected as mixed waste in sanitary landfills, in waste incineration plants, or in mechanical-biological treatment plants, are compared to the existing separate waste collection and treatment in Germany in 2014. The results show that the treatment of the mixed collected household waste in sanitary landfills would lead to a significant release of greenhouse gases. The treatment in MBTs with the recovery of valuables and the further disposal of the biologically stabilized fraction on landfills, as well as the treatment of the high calorific fraction (also called refuse derived fuel – RDF) in RDF plants, coal-fired power plants, or cement kilns, would lead to small amounts of avoided greenhouse gas emissions. The thermal treatment in waste incineration plants would lead to moderate amounts of avoided greenhouse gases. Only with the actually practiced separate collection and treatment of household waste were significant amounts of greenhouse gas emissions avoided. In total, this is approximately 5.5 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalents for approximately 45.5 million tons of separate collected and treated household waste in Germany in 2014.
Heterogeneous catalysis is a key technology in modern industrial societies. The main steps of a catalytic process take place at the surfaces of complex materials. For the investigations of these surfaces X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is widely used and fits ideally. At some suitable examples, it will be explained how XPS can help to understand such catalysts better. The focus is on selective oxidation catalysts, one of the main challenges of present research. Here it will illustrate, how changes in the near surface region influence the catalyst performance and, herewith the different stages (activation, maximum performance and deactivation) in the life of catalysts. Additionally, it will be stressed out how important information at different depth regions (surface, near-surface region, bulk) can be useful for comprehensive understanding of the material.
Another important subject is nanostructured catalysts with molecular sieves as supports or defined complexes as precursors. Finally, the combination of XPS with other methods used in the analysis of catalysts, e.g. electron microscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and low energy ion scattering will be discussed.
In order to observe the effect of the aggregate phases between 2 mm and 16 mm without overlap with rheological effects induced by the cement hy-dration and without interactions with a threshold fine sand particle size that affects both, paste and aggregates, rheological experiments were conducted on a limestone filler based paste mixed with aggregates up to 16 mm. Vari-ous aggregate fractions were blended and mixed with the replacement paste in different volumetric ratios.
The dry aggregates’ flow coefficients were determined and compared to yield stress and plastic viscosity values at different aggregate volume fractions. The results indicated that the flow coefficient is not a suitable parameter to predict the performance of the aggregates in the paste. It was shown that the yield stress of pastes is largely determined by the blend of different aggregate fractions, while the plastic viscosity to large extend depends upon the coars-est aggregate fraction.
Based on the results, ideal aggregate composition ranges for minimised yield stress are presented. For the plastic viscosity no such grading curves to achieve minimum values could be found, but high viscosity curves are identified.
Performing mechanical tests at high temperatures is a nontrivial issue: Compared to room temperature testing, additional phenomena like time-dependent Deformation processes and oxidation effects raise the complexity of the material’s response, while more sophisticated test setups and additional control parameters increase the number of potential sources of error. To a large extent, these complications can be overcome by carefully following all recommendations given in the respective high temperature testing standards, but more comprehensive background information helps to identify points of specific importance in particular test campaigns. In this chapter, an overview is given on general high temperature testing issues like the appropriate choice of experimental equipment and key aspects of temperature measurement. In subsequent sections, the major static and dynamic high temperature test methods are reviewed and their Special features, as compared to testing at room temperature, are highlighted based on example data sets. Influences of specimen size and environmental effects are shortly outlined in a concluding section. In the whole chapter, a focus is set on testing of “classical” metallic high temperature materials, but many considerations are equally valid for testing of intermetallics, composites, and high temperature ceramics.
Industrial Radiology is used for volumetric inspection of industrial objects. By penetration of these objects (typically weldments, pipes or castings) with X-ray or Gamma radiation the 3D-volume is projected onto a 2D image detector. The X-ray film is the oldest radiographic image detector and still in wide use in industry. The industrial X-ray film systems used today differ from these used in medicine. Medical film systems are described well in the literature, but industrial film systems not. So we start with a description of the properties and standards for industrial film systems. The requirements on image quality are defined by several standards and can be verified with different image quality indicators (IQIs). They describe the ability of the human being to detect small and low contrast indications in a noisy image background. The essential parameters for digital industrial radiology are described.
Since about 30 years electronic image detectors are gradually replacing the industrial film. These detectors are based on storage phosphor imaging plates in combination with Laser scanners (“Computed Radiography”, CR) or a variety of different digital detector arrays (DDA). Typical applications of CR and DDAs are discussed as well as new possibilities by digital image processing, which is enabled by the computer based image handling, processing and analysis.
The implementation of fluorescent methods is of outstanding importance in the field of optical chemical sensor Technology and biosciences. Their bioanalytical applications are manifold including fluorescence microscopy, fluorescence in situ hybridization, DNA sequencing, fluorescence-activated cell sorting, immunoassays, analysis of DNA and Protein microarrays, and quantitative PCR, just to name a few examples. Particularly, fluorescence microscopy is a valuable method in the versatile field of biomedical imaging methods which nowadays utilizes different fluorescence Parameters like emission wavelength/Color and lifetime for the discrimination between different targets. Sectional Images are available with confocal microscopes. Tissue, cells or single cellular compartments can be stained and visualized with fluorescent dyes and biomolecules can be selectively labeled with fluorescent dyes to Monitor biomolecular interactions inside cells or at Membrane bound receptors.
On the other hand , fluorophores can act as indicator (or "molecular probe") to visualize intrinsically colorless and non-fluorescent ionic and neutral analytes such as pH, Oxygen (pO2), metal ions, anions, hydrogen peroxide or bioactive small organic molecules such as Sugars or nucleotides. Thereby, their photoluminescent properties (fluorescence or phoporescence intensity, exitation and/or Emission wavelength, emission lifetime or anisotropy) respond to the presence of these species in their immediate Environment. In general, the use of luminescent probes has the advantage that they can be delivered directly into the sample, and detected in a contactless remote mode. By now, these probes are often encapsulated in different types of nanoparticles (NPs) made from (biodegradable) organic polymers, biopolymers or inorganic materials like silica or bound to their surface.

Given their unique properties, ultrashort laser pulses with durations in the femtosecond to picosecond range currently open new avenues in the field of laser materials processing, resulting in groundbreaking new applications based on laser-induced surface functionalization. This article reviews the usability of temporally distributed energy deposition via double-pulse irradiation in applications based on laser ablation. This includes simple new techniques for surface nanostructuring and improved sensitivities in spectroscopic material analyses.
Elastomers are widely used as the main sealing materials in Containers for low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste and as an additional component fo metal seals in spent-fuel and high-level waste containers. According to appropriate guidelines and regulations, safe enclosure of the radioactive container contents has to be guaranteed for lengthy storage periods of at least 40 years. Therefore, the understanding of seal ageing behaviour is of high importance and has to be considered with regard to possible dynamic events taking place during transport after storage. An accelerated ageing approach for compressed seals is presented, as well as some first results.
This paper describes the experimental calibration of an existing Wiegmann–Polonceau roof truss based on modal parameters. Dynamic tests allowed the determination of the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the global truss and of individual truss members. The global and local modal configurations as well as coupled vibration of truss members are discussed. In addition, as truss members are axially loaded, the effect of stress stiffening on the modal parameters is considered. Moreover, several finite element models with different modelling assumptions for the details of the connections and member geometrical characteristics such as gusset plates and turnbuckles were developed. A suitable numerical model was chosen to represent the truss structural behavior. This paper focuses on the local measurement and analysis strategies applied to single truss members. The possibility of using a local analysis method, namely methods that consider individual members as part of a structure, is demonstrated to assess the behavior of the global truss structure. The comparison of the results after calibration reveals a very good correlation between the experimentally identified and numerically estimated modal parameters of the historic truss.
Literature provides a wide range of hydrogen diffusion coefficients for low alloyed steels used in power plants. In fact, experimental boundary conditions and calculation methods have influence on the determination of these coefficients. The diffusion and trapping behavior in creep-resistant steel 7CrMoVTiB10-10 has been studied. Based on experimental carrier gas hot extraction (CGHE) data, a numerical model has been developed to describe the hydrogen transport and respective hydrogen distribution at elevated temperatures. The numerical results suggest that common calculation methods for diffusion coefficients are limited for experimental data analysis. The sample preparation time before CGHE experiment influences the determined diffusion coefficients with the consequence that non-homogeneous hydrogen concentration profiles have to be considered in the simulations.
High-speed photography was applied to investigate the explosive behavior of bubble-containing systems of the type organic solvent---gaseous oxidizing agent. Knowledge about the explosive behavior of such systems is of great importance, for example, for the safe operation of chemical reactors in oxidation processes in the liquid phase. Examples of the complex dynamical reaction of bubbles are elucidated where bubble-containing liquids were subjected to the impact of shockwaves. The different stages of the shock-induced explosive behavior of oxygen and oxygen plus inert gas bubbles were studied experimentally and theoretically mainly in liquid cyclohexane. Other solvents, such as cumene and 2-ethylhexanal, have been found to show that shock-induced bubble explosions can occur even if the gas phase of the bubble is not in the explosive range before impact. Tue influence of different parameters on the bubble Explosion process, such as the composition of the bubbles and the initial pressure, was investigated.
Limiting conditions for bubble explosions were determined. In addition to the behavior of individual bubbles, the interaction of exploding bubbles with one another was observed, which provides information on the Propagation mechanism of self-sustaining bubble-detonation waves. The results are important for the safety assessment of the explosion risks in corresponding two-phase systems.
Electromagnetic methods are widely used in Non-destructive Testing industries (NDT). In order to meet the requirements, safety-relevant products and structures have to be tested reliably during production or within subsequent maintenance cycles. For this purpose industrial users call for adapted testing methods which allow the detection of relevant defects such as cracks and pore in ferromagnetic or conductive materials. Automated testing systems and the application of sensor arrays are of great interest in order to enhance inspection quality and to decrease testing time and costs. Magneto resistance (MR) sensors like giant magneto resistance (GMR) or tunnel magneto resistance sensor (TMR) have proofed their suitability in many NDT-applications due to their extraordinary properties which combine high field sensitivity, a high spatial resolution and low costs. Due to their small size these sensors can be useful – in addition to the pure detection task – for a more detailed defect characterization and defect reconstruction providing defect size, orientation and geometry. This chapter gives a brief introduction of electromagnetic testing methods, i.e., magnetic particle inspection (MPI) and eddy current testing (ET), followed by two different approaches for which MR sensor arrays were successfully adapted.
Due to their simple and reliable application, elastomers are used for many tasks. Many fields of application like transport, aviation and process technology, entail low temperatures where proper functionality of the employed seals has to be ensured. Therefore, understanding the low temperature behavior of elastomeric seals is important for safe seal operation to restrict the temperature application range.
For all areas of application, the question of seal lifetime is also important for replacement or maintenance intervals. The lifetime is especially important in applications that allow no seal replacement. Since the seal can determine the lifetime of storage in such cases, reliable lifetime estimation is necessary for these applications, and requires an extensive knowledge of the specific aging behavior.
Sol-Gel wood preservation
(2017)
The sol–gel-based modification of wood introduces chemical substances into wood in order to improve its characteristics and impart new properties. It stabilizes dimensions of wood (timber) components, increases its strength and resistance to water, and reduces cracking. Many sol–gel-based impregnations aim to protect against wood rot and fire. In most cases, the treatments are performed with alkoxysilanes, polysiloxanes, colloidal silica, or organically modified silica. In addition further substances such as titania, copper, and boron compounds have been applied on different types of wood. The precursor solutions were introduced by immersion, painting, or spray coating of wood followed by a drying and heat treatment process. The structure of the impregnated wood was investigated by SEM, EDX, TEM, FT-IR, NMR, and XRD. Frequently, test procedures according to standards were applied in order to assess the improvement in properties. Investigations demonstrate that silica and titania impregnations change properties first of all with increasing the amount of absorbed inorganic material (WPG), which is determined by the concentration of precursors, amount and size of particles in the sol, and the impregnation method. Sol–gel impregnation can be considered as an environmentally friendly approach of wood preservation. Various improvements in wood properties can be achieved such as reduced water uptake and volume swelling, improved weather stability, resistance against biodegradation, and fire retardancy.
Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is a well-established analytical method for multi-elemental analysis in particular for elements at trace and ultra-trace levels. It has found acceptance in various application areas during the last decade. ICP-MS is also more and more applied for detection in the life sciences. For these applications, ICP-MS excels by a high sensitivity, which is independent of the molecular structure of the analyte, a wide linear dynamic range and by excellent multi-element capabilities. Furthermore, methods based on ICP-MS offer simple quantification concepts, for which usually (liquid) standards are applied, low matrix effects compared to other conventional bioanalytical techniques, and relative limits of detection (LODs) in the low pg g−1 range and absolute LODs down to the attomol range.
In this chapter, we focus on new applications where the multi-element capability of ICP-MS is used for detection of lanthanoides or rare earth elements, which are applied as elemental stains or tags of biomolecules and in particular of antibodies.
Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is based on formation of positively charged atomic ions in a high-frequency inductively coupled Argon plasma at atmospheric pressure. The ions are extracted and transferred from the plasma source into a mass analyzer operated at high vacuum via an interface equipped with a sampling and a skimmer cone. The ions are separated in the mass analyzer according to their charge to mass ratio. The ions are converted at a conversion dynode and are detected by use of a secondary electron multiplier or a Faraday cup.
From an analytical point of view, ICP-MS is a well-established method for multi-elemental analysis in particular for elements at trace- and ultra-trace levels. Furthermore, methods based on ICP-MS offer simple quantification concepts, for which usually (liquid) standards are applied, low matrix effects compared to other conventional analytical techniques, and relative limits of detection (LODs) in the low pg g−1 range and absolute LODs down to the attomol range. For these applications, ICP-MS excels by a high sensitivity which is independent of the molecular structure and a wide linear dynamic range. It has found acceptance in various application areas and during the last decade ICP-MS is also more and more applied for detection of rare earth elements particularly in the life sciences.
Due to the fact that all molecules introduced into the high temperature of the plasma in the ion source were completely dissociated and broken down into atoms, which are subsequently ionized, all elemental species information is completely lost. However, if the different species are separated before they enter the plasma by using adequate fractionation or separation techniques, then ICP-MS can be used as a very sensitive element-specific detector. We will discuss this feature of ICP-MS in this chapter in more detail at hand of the speciation of gadolinium-containing contrast agents.

Gravity has significant effects on alloy solidification, primarily due to thermosolutal convection and solid phase buoyancy. Since 2004, the European Space Agency has been supporting investigation of these effects by promoting in situ X-ray monitoring of the solidification of aluminium alloys on microgravity platforms, on earth, and in periodically varying g conditions. The first microgravity experiment-investigating foaming of liquid metals - was performed on board a sounding rocket, in 2008. In 2012 the first ever X-ray-monitored solidification of a fully dense metallic alloy in space was achieved: the focus was columnar solidification of an Al-Cu alloy. This was followed in 2015 by a similar experiment, investigating equiaxed solidification. Ground reference experiments were completed in all cases. In addition, experiments have been performed on board parabolic flights-where the effects of varying gravity have been studied. We review here the technical and scientific progress to date, and outline future perspectives.
Application of a cross correlation technique for assessment of a non-homogeneous stress field
(2016)
Many researchers have addressed the determination of a homogeneous stress field from the analysis of ultrasound waves, using the theory of acoustoelasticity with Murnaghan´s constants derived for axially loaded specimens with the ultrasound wave path also in the axial direction, or for hydrostatically loaded specimens. However, the use of such strategy for structural healthy monitoring requires the ability to handle nonhomogeneous, arbitrarily oriented stress fields. This paper describes an attempt to evaluate changes in the stress field of a concrete block with an eccentrically placed tendon through acoustoelastic analysis. Pairs of acoustic transducers are placed on the surfaces such that wave paths are parallel to the tendon. A cross correlation technique is used for the accurate assessment of the sound velocity changes, and subsequent application of Murnaghan´s equations for assessing the stress changes. Results are promising with respect to the evaluation for non-homogeneous stress field from ultra sound velocities.

Offshore wind turbines enter unknown territory, especially where the foundations are concerned. This is because offshore wind power can only make use of the experience from the common offshore constructions used by the oil and gas industry to a limited extent. The offshore wind industry has tried to reduce foundation dimensions, especially the pile lengths, as much as possible compared with those of the oil and gas industry. This is because with the large number of wind turbines involved it can provide considerable economic advantages. On the other hand, the stability of the foundations is additionally at risk because due to the much larger number of cyclic loads they are subjected to it is very difficult to predict how they will behave. Since offshore wind farms are manufactured in series, every systematic fault in the foundation acts as a series fault for a large number of turbines. This calls for monitoring – and the right dimensions of pile foundation, the most common type of foundations used for wind turbines
A great deal is possible, even on the seabed. Together, wind and waves shake the foundations of the offshore wind turbines. "ere is also the “normal” current and ebb and #ow of the tides that are so distinctive in the North Sea. Pore water pressure can also occur on the seabed, loosening it. Where monopiles are involved, the worst case is that the stability of the whole turbine can be altered – even if such a monopile rammed into the seabed has a diameter of up to eight metres. Over half the planned offshore wind turbines in the North and Baltic Seas are to have monopile foundations, and over 40 % are to have multi-pile foundations, designed for example as a tripod. "is is why pile foundations and their loads deserve special attention. For one thing above all is to be avoided in plant operations, and that is the risk of turbine tilt.
Welding is the most important joining technology. In the steel construction
industry, e.g. production of windmill sections, welding accounts for a
main part of the manufacturing costs and resource consumption. Moreover, social
issues attached to welding involve working in dangerous environments. This aspect
has unfortunately been neglected so far, in light of a predominant focus on economics
combined with a lack of suitable assessment methods. In this chapter,
exemplary welding processes are presented that reduce the environmental and
social impacts of thick metal plate welding. Social and environmental Life Cycle
Assessments for a thick metal plate joint are conducted for the purpose of
expressing and analysing the social and environmental impacts of welding.
Furthermore, it is shown that state-of-the-art technologies like Gas Metal Arc
Welding with modified spray arcs and Laser Arc-Hybrid Welding serve to increase
social and environmental performance in contrast to common technologies, and
therefore offer great potential for sustainable manufacturing.
The investigation of physical properties and chemical composition generates data important for answering art-historical questions. Due to technological developments, technical diagnostics in art and culture are in ever-greater demand in such fields of transdisciplinary research. Based on one example, a collar drawing from the Berlin Diez albums, the present paper aims to give some insights into the multi-instrumental approach in the material analysis of cultural artefacts. The same methods were also applied to other drawings from the Diez Albums.
The investigation of cultural assets often deals with the question of provenance, dating, or attribution to artists or workshops. The analysis of physical properties and chemical composition generates important data for answering cultural-historical questions that cannot be solved by stylistic and art-historical methods alone. Starting from some wooden painted architectural elements from Kocho and one from Bezeklik (III 8592), this paper aims to give some insights into the multi-instrumental approach to the analysis of cultural artefacts.
An ideal sensor system is a combination of a selective receptor, an effective transducer, and a sensitive detector. To utilize molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) as responsive recognition phases in sensors, the employment of fluorescent molecules or nanoparticles (NPs) that show prominent changes in their spectroscopic properties after binding of the target molecule in the MIP’s cavity is particularly attractive. Such fluorescent MIPs (fMIPs) act through target-induced quenching, enhancement, or spectral shifts of the fluorescence. This contribution introduces different strategies of incorporation of fluorescent dyes, probes, and NPs into fMIPs. In addition, various sensing mechanisms are reviewed, and depending on the application of the sensor, the different deployable formats, their advantages, drawbacks, and impact will be presented and discussed.
Biosensors, as defined by Pure and Applied Chemistry, are ‘chemical sensors in which the recognition System utilizes a biochemical mechanism. The biological recognition system translates information from the biochemical domain, usually an analyte concentration, into a chemical or physical output signal with a defined sensitivity’.(1) It is also appointed that chemical or biological sensors contain two basic components connected in series: a chemical or biomolecular recognition System (receptor) and a physicochemical transducer. According to this prerequisite, this overlook is confined to sensor devices that combine a biomolecular recognition element with an optical signal transducer. Homogeneous or intracellular assays using fluorescent molecular probes or nanoparticles are not considered, although they are frequently termed as molecular sensors or nanosensors in the literature.
Fluorescence-based biosensors are generalized as those devices that derive an analytical signal from a photoluminescent (either fluorescence or phosphorescence) emission process. Chemi- or bioluminescent detection systems are only briefly discussed in this review.
Biosensors are used for a wide variety of tasks, including detection of compounds of biomedical, environmental or defense interest; on-line monitoring for process control; quality control of foodstuffs; selective detection of compounds undergoing a chemical separation; and screening of drug compounds. Advantages of such devices include high selectivity, rapid response times, reusability, amenability to remote analysis, and immunity to electrical interferences. The selective nature of complexation between biomolecule and analyte and the small size of sensor devices can be combined with advanced detection techiques such as total internal reflection (TIR) spectroscopy. This results in an ability to measure analytes in complex matrices with unsurpassed sensitivity. Such samples may include highly scattering components such as milk or whole blood,(11) or relatively inaccessible locations such as groundwater wells, or even intracellular environments. The key limitation of such devices mainly centers on the poor stability of biological compounds, which can lead to a substantial drift in instrumental response over time. The so-called Cambridge Definition appoints another characteristic property of sensors. Therein, they are defined as ‘miniaturized devices which can deliver real-time and on-line information on the presence of specific compounds or ions in even complex samples’. Accordingly, a sensor is expected to respond reversibly and continuously. With the exception of some enzymatic sensors, these conditions are not fulfilled in case of most biosensors. Particularly, in devices where immunological reagents or DNA are used as recognition elements, they show a lack of reversibility and operate only as a ‘one-shot’ screen, without the potential for continuous, quantitative analysis. Nevertheless, the designations immunosensors or DNA sensors became accepted for such analytical or diagnostic tools.
Cylinder valves for oxygen service that meet the standard DIN EN ISO 10297 should be safe, if properly handled by the user. In the last few years, however, the number of incidents with oxygen valves that has been reported to Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) has increased. According to the incident reports, incorrect handling can be ruled out. People were seriously injured and in most cases, the causes of these incidents were not clear. Very often, such incidents occurred during opening and closing of the valves. Therefore, the technical-scientific community has put the existing test methods for type testing more and more into question. Besides other mandatory tests, the above-mentioned standard allows to perform the endurance test with air or with nitrogen. This is appropriate for all other gases but not for oxygen. Up to now, this test does not consider the fact that cylinder valves also contain nonmetallic seat materials and lubricants that may react with oxygen in a dangerous way. Because of this unsatisfactory situation, BAM initiated a research project to perform endurance testing of cylinder valves for oxygen service much more practice related with oxygen. This test simulates very well real life situations when the cylinder valve is opened or closed. The first part of this project was the development of a new oxygen operated endurance tester in accordance with DIN EN ISO 10297. In a second part, endurance testing of valves with air and with oxygen was performed and the results were compared. In addition, another mandatory test of the standard, the oxygen pressure surge test was carried out on new valves and on valves that had undergone endurance tests with air or oxygen, to see the influence on the burn-out safety of such pre-stressed valves. This paper presents the main results of the project. The findings clearly speak for implementing the oxygen endurance test not only to DIN EN ISO 10297 but also to various other standards to increase the burn-out safety of oxygen cylinder valves.
Fungal extracellular materials reinforce a constant interaction between their cell wall and the environment. A dynamic mixture of chitin, glucans, mannans, glycoproteins, glycolipids and pigments supports the success of all fungal life styles – from symbiotic to the free-living and pathogenic. Fungi are perfectly adapted to grow on surfaces and in porous environments, where they form medically and geochemically relevant biofilms. Fungal EPS are critical in adhesion to other fungi, other cells or substratum as well as in the following interaction with the host immune system or material they attack, degrade and deteriorate respectively. Characterisation of extracellular compounds and understanding of its function is necessary to limit damage caused by fungal activity. All necessary methodology from chemical characterization to complete genetic analyses has been developed for medically important fungi. Now it is time to apply this knowledge to the numerous, largely aerobic and very active organisms that occupy a wide range of atmosphere-exposed habitats in the upper lithosphere. One can expect that analogies between medically- and environmentally-relevant model fungal species will help us to address the dynamics of the fungal cell EPS matrix in much more efficient and widely applicable ways.
Reference nanomaterials
(2016)
This chapter reviews relevant aspects of the still less explored field of RNMs. In the first part, definition of RMs according to different metrological levels was presented as well as the general strategy on their development. In the second part, the importance of RNMs in material science and nanotoxicology is explained and considerations on the use of silica nano-objects as potential future reference material was discussed. Overall, several points should be highlighted from this chapter: Definition of a reference material depends on the level of standardization. Certified reference material represents the highest level of traceability. Different types of reference materials, standard materials and certified reference materials are available, as shown in Table 3.1. The preparation of nano-objects with well-defined mechanical properties is still an unsolved issue and thus needs further R&D activities. Nevertheless, amorphous silica seems to be a promising candidate for reaching this objective. Traceable properties of nanomaterials are still limited to few cases such as primary particle size and thickness measurements of very thin films. In general, developed RMs are monoparametric thus, only one characteristic of the nano-objects is reported. In nanotoxicology, the challenge is in the development of suitable RNM that bears similarities to the measurements made on the sample analysed.
The one-phase methods described in Chapter 2 were shown to be able to predict casting to some extent, but could not depict segregation, sedimentation and blockage occurring during flow. On the other hand, the distinct element methods described in Chapter 3 did not take into account the presence of two phases in the system and describes concrete as distinct elements interacting through more or less complex laws. A reliable numerical model of a multiphase material behaviour shall take into account both phases (solid and liquid). From the numerical point of view, concrete flow shall be seen therefore as the free surface flow of a highly-concentrated suspension of rigid grains.
Alumina thin films
(2016)
This chapter gives an overview over preparation, properties and applications of alumina thin films. The preparation of polymeric and colloidal alumina sols and their deposition on diverse substrate materials with different geometries are described first. Consideration of properties (surface tension, particle size, viscosity, aging of the sols and their optimization by using certain additives) is included, too. A description of post-treatments of the coatings, which initiate phase transformations and also determine their microstructure, completes the part on coating preparation. Data on adhesion, thickness, surface roughness and mechanical, textural as well as optical properties of alumina thin films are provided in a further paragraph. In a third main part experience concerning possible applications, such as (i) membranes for catalysis, separation and filtration, (ii) barrier layers against electrochemical and high temperature corrosion or inter-diffusion of ions between different phases, (iii) mechanical protection, (iv) sensor construction, (v) improvement of optical properties, as well as (vi) achieving water repellency is summarized.
In the present chapter, the capabilities of Raman spectroscopy for the advanced characterisation of thin films for solar cells are reviewed. Raman spectroscopy is an optical, nondestructive technique based on the inelastic scattering of photons with elemental vibrational excitations in the material. The line shape and position of the Raman bands are determined by the crystalline structure and chemical composition of the measured samples, being sensitive to the presence of crystalline defects, impurities and strain. Presence of peaks characteristic of different phases also allows for the identification of secondary phases that are strongly related to the growth and process conditions of the films. All these aspects account for a strong interest in the analysis of the Raman spectra, providing a powerful nondestructive analytical tool for the structural and chemical assessment of the films. In addition, the combination of a Raman spectrometer with an optical microscope also allows for achieving a high spatial resolutions (of below 1 µm) when mapping surfaces and analyzing depth-resolved phase distributions in thin films.
The present chapter is divided into four main sections: The two first ones are devoted to a revision of the Fundamentals of Raman spectroscopy (Section 17.2) and Vibrational modes in crystalline materials (Section 17.3). Section 17.4 deals with the main experimental considerations involved in the design and implementation of a Raman scattering setup. This is followed by a detailed description of the application of Raman scattering for the structural and chemico-physical analysis of thin film photovoltaic materials (Section 17.5), with the identification of crystalline structure and secondary phases, evaluation of film crystallinity, analysis of chemical composition of semiconductor alloys, characterisation of nanocrystalline and amorphous layers, stress effects and crystal orientations. This includes the description of corresponding state of the art and recent case examples that illustrate the capabilities of the Raman technique for the advanced characterisation of layers and process monitoring in thin-film photovoltaic technologies.
This study presents diagnostic techniques to assess the structural vulnerability of earthen buildings. Medieval structures at Ambel (near Zaragoza, Spain), once a preceptory or monastic house belonging to the Military Orders, provide a useful case study. After more than a thousand years of construction, failure and repair from the 10th century to the present day, Ambel preceptory today is characterised by marked inhomogeneities: construction materials and structural typologies are juxtaposed, with structural discontinuities at the interfaces between construction phases. This paper argues that, while static analysis is an essential prerequisite before a suitable maintenance program can be defined, no evaluation of the structural behaviour of any historic building can ignore an understanding of the building’s history.
A new technique to fix bioceramic powder on a titanium alloy by using femtosecond laser pulses is presented. It is shown that gentle fixation of a bioactive dielectric material on a metallic model implant is successful. This is potentially a new tool for the improvement of bone prostheses. An advantage of the ultrashort pulses is the very low heat influx into the whole sample. There is only a very thin interaction zone during the fixing, which is the metal surface in contact with the ceramic layer. Neither the fixed ceramic particles nor the major part of the metal suffer any modification. The stability of the model implant (ceramic on metal) is investigated by rotating bending fatigue tests. No indication of a reduction of the mechanical stability compared to untreated metallic reference samples was found.
Neutron imaging
(2016)
Neutron imaging methods are appropriate to investigate hydrogen distributions in several metallic systems. The large total neutron cross section of hydrogen compared to those of elements or isotopes, respectively, in usual structural materials like steels or zirconium alloys allows the detection even of small amounts of hydrogen in such materials. The dependence of the total macroscopic neutron cross section of the sample or component on the hydrogen concentration can be determined experimentally by means of calibration specimens with known hydrogen concentrations. Such a calibration allows for a full quantitative determination of the local hydrogen concentration with a spatial resolution better than 20 μm. Because neutron radiography is fast and non-destructive, in situ investigations of time-dependent processes like hydrogen absorption and release or hydrogen bulk diffusion can be performed. This chapter gives an introduction into the main neutron imaging methods, radiography and tomography, and gives as examples results of neutron imaging investigations of hydrogen in different steels and in zirconium alloys, respectively.
In the last two decades, the solubility of gases in ionic liquids has attracted a lot of attention. While at the beginning most publications dealt with the solubility of a single gas in a pure ionic liquid, recently the interest starts to shift to the – from an application-oriented point of view – more challenging area of the simultaneous solubility of several gases in an ionic liquid and/or the solubility of a single gas in solvent mixtures with ionic liquids. The current state of information on experimental data (and the phenomena encountered) in such systems is summarized and discussed.
The chapter describes the application of electronic noses (multigas sensors) for the quality control of spices and spice mixtures. Electronic noses were successfully applied for headspace analysis of spices. It was demonstrated in many investigations that electronic noses can contribute to the characterization of spices and spice mixtures in order to distinguish spices and spice mixtures, differentiate by origin, growth seasons, and processing, indicate adulteration from original, detect mold infestation. Electronic noses can be used as a fast screening method to provide information about the product quality. However, it needs samples and methods for reference, careful training, and complex calibration to consider influencing and disturbing effects as well as the possible limitations of the instrumentation. The correlation to classical chemical analysis methods is always advisable. Machined olfaction methods are capable to support the sensory analysis; however, they cannot yet substitute them.
Radioactive wastes are generated by research and medicine (e.g., the use of radioisotopes), industrial use of radioisotopes (e.g., for nondestructive materials testing), different activities related to nuclear power plant (NPP) operations (e.g., mining of uranium and thorium ores, manufacturing of fuel assemblies, operational waste generation during NPP Operation), reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel, and dismantling of nuclear installations.
Prevention of damage caused by heat is one of the objectives during package safety evaluation. This chapter describes basics of heat transfer and major aspects of regulatory requirements. Package temperature criteria and fire test conditions are explained. Special package design features regarding material properties and safety evaluation concepts are discussed. Experimental fire testing is performed by pool fire or with the help of a furnace. Analysis by numerical or analytical approaches show temperature gradients and whether compliance with the regulatory requirements and specified design temperatures is met. The tightness of the package lid system influenced by geometry changes is in the focus of a holistic thermo-mechanical approach considering the entire mechanical and thermal load conditions according the regulatory requirements.
Hochtemperaturtribologie
(2010)
Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) were generated on two types of steel (100Cr6, X30CrMoN15-1) and two types of titanium (Ti, Ti6A14V) surfaces upon irradiation with multiple linear polarized femtosecond laser pulses in air environment (pulse duration 30 fs, central wavelength 790 nm, pulse repetition rate 1 kHz, Gaussian beam shape). Teh conditions (laser fluence, spatial spot overlap) were optimized in a sample-scanning geometry for the processing of large surface areas covered homogeneously by two different types of LIPSS - either near wavelength or sub-100 nm structures. The tribological performance of the nanostructured surfaces was characterized under reciprocating sliding at 1 Hz against a ball of hardened steel using different lubricants and normal forces. After 1000 cycles the corresponding wear tracks were characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy. For specific conditions, the wear was strongly reduced and laser-generated nanostructures endured the tribological treatment. Simultaneously, a significant reduction of the friction coefficient was observed in the laser-irradiated LIPSS-covered areas, indicating the benefit of laser surface structuring for tribological applications. The spatially Gaussian shaped beam used for the laser processing was transformed via beam shaping into a top hat distribution at the surface of the samples for optimization. The tribological performance of the laser-induced nanostructures is discussed on the basis of different physical and chemical mechanisms.

ICP-MS is based on the formation of (preferentially monovalent positively)charged atomic ions in an inductively coupled Ar plasma at almost 10 000 K. The ions formed are transferred from the plasma source at ambient pressure into a mass Separator operated at high vacuum via a set of cones. The ions are separate«! according to their mass/charge ratio in the mass Separator (quadrupole, magnetic sector field or time-of-flight mass Separator). In most cases, the ions are detected using a secondaiy electron multiplier; in some set-ups (also) a Faraday cup can be used. Single-collector (scanning mass spectrometer usually used for quantitative elemental analysis) or multicollector (static Operation of mass spectrometer for precise isotope ratio analysis) configurations can be found.
Technical background
(2015)
The major components of sector field instruments can be listed as follows and will be described in more detail in the following chapter. (Specific details for the different types of instruments will be given in the corresponding instrumental sections in Chapters 11-17.) The general principle of all mass spectrometers follows ionisation after sample introduction, Separation of the ions according to their mlz ratio and final detection at the detection unit. The transport and Separation of ions follow the principles of ion optics.
Thermal ionisation, also known as surface ionisation, was one of the first ionisation techniques developed for mass spectrometry, having been invented as early as 1918. The ionization process, described by the empirically derived “fractionation laws”, is widely understood. Isotope ratio measurements can be achieved with high precision and accuracy. Due to this, thermal ionisation has paved the way for great scientific achievements including: the discovery of new isotopes, the determination of radioactive half-lives and atomic weights of the elements, the accurate determination of the age of the earth and investigations on human society in the past such as mobility and trade. TIMS is still regarded as ‘golden standard’ in isotope ratio measurements. Thus the method is a reference technique that remains at the forefront of isotopic analysis particularly in the fields of metrology. A concise overview is given here of the technical background of thermal ionisation as well as the numerous applications of this technique in earth sciences, industry, metrology, and nuclear forensics.
Measurement strategies
(2015)
Designing an appropriate measurement strategy for a particular analytical question is not always obvious, since a number of factors have to be considered, whereby some of them might be difficult to define. A set of key questions generally precede the experimental design in analytical measurements and help to choose the measurement strategy, which is fit for the intended use – in the particular case of the content of this book – either for quantification, elemental ratio or isotope ratio analyses, accordingly.
Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) is acquiring increasing commercial and socio-economic significance. For products and goods with high investment costs and a long lifespan, especially in the sectors of energy and transportation, a considerable portion of commercial profits are generated by after-sales services. In the field of research and development, not enough attention has been paid so far to tasks and approaches involving MRO. The field thus has a limited scientific background, despite a high potential in the business sector for technological and scientific optimization. The challenges and chances of MRO for sustainable enterprises will be explained with reference to the Fraunhofer Innovation Cluster Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul in Energy and Transport. The developments and project results of the four fields of innovation »Cleaning«, »Repair and Overhaul«, »Condition Monitoring and Diagnosis«, as well as »MRO Planning and Digital Assistance« will be explained.
The formation of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) on different materials (silicon, fused silica, quartz) with linearly polarized fs-laser irradiation is studied experimentally. In dielectrics, the importance of transient excitation stages in the LIPSS formation is demonstrated by using (multiple) cross-polarized double-fs-laser-pulse irradiation sequences. A characteristic decrease of the spatial LIPSS periods is observed for double-pulse delays of less than 2 ps along with a characteristic 90°-rotation of the LIPSS orientation.

Effective cleanup of groundwater contaminated with radionuclides using permeable reactive barriers
(2015)
The mining of natural resources always causes environmental impacts such as land use, large quantities of waste, destruction of habitat, impairment of groundwater regime, and quite possibly contamination of soil, water, or air (Dudka and Adriano 1997). The environmental impact of mining cannot be estimated easily. The concept of total material requirement (TMR) is an attempt to quantify the environmental impact of materials. TMR is the sum of domestic and imported primary natural resources and their hidden flows (Adriaanse et al. 1997). Hidden flows are often not considered in environmental analyses because they are attributed with no cost. However, overburden from mining, earth moving for construction, and soil erosion are major sources of ecological damage. From the mining of minerals to the final products, a number of process steps take place (exploration, mine site development, extraction, milling, washing, concentration, smelting, refining, fabrication), each step being connected to other input flows such as energy or other resources. The hidden flows for metals related to metal ore mining have been investigated by Halada et al. (2001). Table 9.1 lists the data for some metals, together with the data for some other minerals and fuels. The TMR in the United States in the 1990s was between 80 and 100 tonnes per capita; in the European Union (EU-15) approximately 50 tonnes per capita (Bringezu 2002).
Activities for the development of reference materials started as early as 1906 at the US National Bureau of Standards (NBS). In 1912, the first iron and steel reference materials were certified for carbon content in Germany by the Royal Prussian Materials Testing Institute MPA, predecessor of BAM, the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing.
Messtechnik und Sensorik
(2014)
In this chapter broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) is employed to polymeric blend systems. In its modern form BDS can cover an extraordinary broad frequency range from 10-4 to 1012 Hz. Therefore, molecular and collective dipolar fluctuations, charge transport, and polarization effects at inner phase boundaries can be investigated in detail including its temperature dependence. In the first part of the chapter, the theoretical basics of dielectric spectroscopy are briefly introduced covering both static and dynamic aspects. This section is followed by short description of the various experimental techniques to cover this broad frequency range. To provide the knowledge to understand the dielectric behavior of polymeric blend systems, the dielectric features of amorphous homopolymers are discussed in some detail. This concerns an introduction of the most important relaxation processes observed for these polymers (localized fluctuations, segmental dynamics related to the dynamic glass transition, chain relaxation), a brief introduction to the conductivity of disordered systems as well as polarization effects at phase boundaries. Theoretical models for each process are shortly discussed. In the last paragraph the dielectric behavior of polymer blends is reviewed where special attention is paid to binary systems for the sake of simplicity. In detail the dielectric behavior of binary miscible blends is described. The two most important experimental facts like the broadening of the dielectric relaxation spectra and the dynamic heterogeneity of the segmental dynamics are addressed in depth. Appropriate theoretical approaches like the temperature-driven concentration fluctuation model and the self-concentration idea are introduced.
The aim of the joint project ViPQuali (Virtual Product Qualification) was to describe a components ageing behaviour in a given environment, by numerical simulation.
Having chosen polypropylene (PP) as the material, which does not show sensitivity to moisture, the relevant weathering parameters of the doseresponse functions could be limited to spectral irradiance and temperature.
In artificial irradiation tests, for PP plates of varied stabiliser content, spectral sensitivity as well as temperature dependence of irradiation-caused crack formation was quantified. For that purpose, samples were exposed both to artificial weathering tests at various constant temperatures and to spectrally resolved irradiation. The temperature dependence could be modelled by an Arrhenius fit. For fitting the spectral sensitivity, a plateau function was chosen. Subsequently, the stabiliser content was parameterised and extrapolated.
The formed dose–response functions were incorporated into a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software program, simulating the environment of a sample within a Phoenix-exposed IP/DP (Instrument Panel/Door Panel box) box, based on sun position and weather conditions, including radiation interactions. Observed local effects as well as the general ageing advance of PP hats are compared with respect to simulation and experiment.
Resulting from this project, for this most simple example of PP of varied stabiliser content, the time to failure can be estimated for each weathering exposure environment with known time-resolved irradiance and temperature conditions.
New developments in spectroscopic techniques for process control are, in general, driven by shortcomings of existing technology, for example, when sensitivity, selectivity, robustness, and so forth do not meet the demands. The perfect process analytical method would be based on a robust and easy to handle customized technique operating in real time, come without any need for calibration, that is, be an absolute method, have a professional support, and be compliant to increasing regulatory requirements. However, there are at least trends toward such an all-in-one device suitable for every purpose.
Small, low-field NMR systems equipped with permanent magnet technology have been developed and allow for quantitative analysis as on-line instruments in a production environment. Quantitative high-resolution on-line NMR spectroscopy contributes to process understanding in pilot plant and research environments.
Laser spectroscopy is a promising field in process analysis owing to its sensitivity and selectivity. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy LIBS is a promising field for direct in situ analysis and remote sensing. Applications of quantum-cascade lasers for process analytical applications are a promising technique. Techniques such as cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS), tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS), and photothermal techniques are briefly introduced.
Recent developments of new detectors have improved X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) for qualitative and quantitative on-line evaluation of the elementary composition of liquid or solid samples, regardless of whether compact or bulk material.
The chapter also introduces miscellaneous techniques such as ion mobility spectroscopy (IMS), microwave and dielectric spectroscopy, terahertz spectroscopy, ultrasonic acoustic spectroscopy, and other methods.

Organic fluorescent dyes are a fundamental component in biomedical research and diagnostic imaging. The major classes encompass polymethine dyes, xanthene dyes, 4,4'-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) dyes, phenoxazines, and rare earth metal complexes. These compounds have been synthesized in manifold variations to optimize their photophysical properties and physicochemical behavior in physiological media and to enable conjugation to targeting molecules and nanocarriers. Furthermore, stimuli-responsive structural motifs were designed to apply these fluorophores as sensors for disease-related physiological and molecular conditions. This chapter is devoted to the chemical base of optical imaging agents, covering the relevant properties of fluorophores and the synthetic concepts toward intelligent optical imaging probes.
Damage detection can be performed by detecting changes in the modal parameters between a reference state and the current (possibly damaged) state of a structure from measured output-only vibration data. Alternatively, a subspace-based damage detection test has been proposed and applied successfully, where changes in the modal parameters are detected, but the estimation of the modal parameters themselves is avoided. Like this, the test can run in an automated way directly on the vibration measurements. However, it was assumed that the unmeasured ambient excitation properties during measurements of the structure in the reference and possibly damaged condition stay constant, which is hardly satisfied by any application. A new version of the test has been derived recently that is robust to such changes in the ambient excitation. In this paper, the robust test is recalled and its performance is evaluated both on numerical simulations and a real application, where a steel frame structure is artificially damaged in the lab.
Polymers are extensively used for sliding systems in cryogenic applications because of their favourable friction and wear behaviour in the absence of external lubrication. Since important new technologies are based on applications under extreme conditions, such as at low temperatures, new requirements on material properties, in particular regarding their operability and reliability, must be met. Up to now, most tribological investigations have been carried out in inert cryogens or cryogenic gas (He, N2). Few experiments have been performed in vacuum environment at cryogenic temperatures. Rarely were testing in reactive media, such as LH2 or LOX. Due to the wide range of operating conditions in cryogenic applications, it is difficult to state general rules. Therefore, this chapter tends to give an overview on theories and experimental studies on polymer tribology at cryogenic temperatures.
Werkstoffe
(2014)
Confronted with indications that the SNML could be a forgery, we reviewed data from our previous analyses again and supplemented it with additional readings. Again, we were short of time. During the first measurement campaign we employed X-ray fluorescence analysis to identify specific trace elements and thereby characterize different writing and drawing materials. In the new measurement campaign, we once again carried out an extensive X-ray fluorescence analysis. In addition, this time we also employed reflection infrared spectroscopy and confocal microscopy.
As with earlier measurement campaigns, we were determined not to take samples. Throughout the process, we have continued to regard the object in question as unique, and as such not to he physically altered in any way. Throughout the analysis, however, it has been clear that non-destructive testing provides less comprehensive results than methods that require testing physical samples. The examinations described below were carried out not only on the SNML, but also on reference objects. The most important of these in this framework was the SN Graz, which is generally accepted as authentic. The following illustrates the results of the analysis in detail.
Aerosol-based DBD - A simple way to provide polymers with functional groups for adhesion promotion
(2013)
Polypropylene (PP) foils were exposed to the plasma of an atmospheric dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) in presence of different aerosols. Pure liquids such as water, ethanol, and 1/1 mixtures ethanol/water (v/v) or aqueous Solutions of acetic acid, poly(acrylic acid), poly(vinyl alcohol), and ethylene glycolpoly(vinyl alcohol) copolymer were introduced into the DBD. Surface composition, the number of functional groups per 100 C atoms, and water contact angles were correlated with the energy density of DBD plasma exposure.
The wettability of the treated surfaces was investigated for different storage times. Peel strength of the thermally deposited aluminum layer to modified polymer surfaces revealed that the aerosol introduction strongly improves the adhesion between aluminum and polypropylene.

While the possibilities of improving corrosion resistance (especially galvanic corrosion) by alloying are limited, surface finishing of magnesium alloys is the alternative for improving corrosion resistance. Due to the low corrosion potential of Mg and the danger of galvanic corrosion in the case of a coating defect, the choice of coatings is limited. This chapter will summarize the corrosion behavior of magnesium alloys and the metallurgical possibilities to improve the corrosion resistance of the alloys and reviewing critically the most commonly used surface treatments and coatings for magnesium.
This chapter will focus on those standards and standardization projects which are relevant for nanomaterials. These are mainly terminology documents defining a nanomaterial, documents describing the measurement and characterization of nanomaterials, the specifications and performance assessment of nanomaterials, as well as documents describing how nanomaterials can influence environment, health, and safety.

Laser hybrid welding technology provides a number of advantages, which in the previous decade have promoted its implementation in different branches of industry such as automotive manufacturing, shipbuilding and power generation. Some examples of the applications of laser hybrid welding are reviewed to demonstrate the technological and economic potential of this technology. The main objective of this chapter is to show some of the benefits and limitations of the process and to give some examples of how the number of applications could rise, taking into account the advantages of the new laser systems, optical components, arc power sources and sensor systems available nowadays.
This chapter summarizes the state of the art and current developments of guidelines for structural health monitoring (SHM) and performance control. Technical guidelines and standards for condition monitoring and technical diagnostics of rotary machines and for non-destructive testing are not reviewed in this chapter.
This chapter introduces and describes the concept of structural health monitoring (SHM) to engineers and designers of technical structures, and to the owners/operators of such structures. It formulates general principles for integrating and implementing measurement and signal processing technologies in the context of SHM to diagnose the condition, performance and health of a technical structure. Information and recommended methods for designing instrumentation, data acquisition, data processing and data analysis for any SHM application are offered.

Non-destructive evaluation (NDE) of composites: using ultrasound to monitor the curing of composites
(2013)
Typical composite materials for lightweight construction consist of a fibre (glass or carbon) reinforced thermosetting matrix. The impregnation of the fabric is made with liquid resin – usually epoxy resin or unsaturated polyester resin are used. The main processing methods are resin transfer moulding (RTM) and prepreg technology often used in combination with autoclave curing. After shaping, the resin must be cured. The final properties of the produced parts depend on the curing degree and the final glass transition temperature. Analytical methods and the use of ultrasound for online cure monitoring in the manufacturing process are introduced. Examples for the application of ultrasonic cure monitoring for the production of composite parts for traffic systems are also covered.
In the last decades it has been necessary to face emergencies due to big crisis events caused by anthropic and natural events. In particular modern technological Systems have reached such a high level of complexity that even a simple event can influence correct behavior with potential catastrophic consequences. The security and economy of technologically developed countries depends on the correct behavior of this infrastructure and on the continuity of the Services that they grant.
In this framework, risk management assumes an important role focusing on policies for vulnerability reduction and after-crisis management. It imposes a multidisciplinary and transnational approach in Order to establish a common strategy between different countries, studying how to be prepared for disasters and prevent disaster damage. In this paper a preliminary analysis of risk categories is presented, suggesting a number of tentative proposals for risk reduction.
A convenient way to overcome the chemical inertness of polyolefin surfaces is to expose them to the atmospheric air plasma of a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). To improve the efficiency in formation of polar groups at the polyolefin surface, different liquids such as water and ethanol were sprayed as aerosol into the plasma zone between the powered electrode and the polyolefin surface. Both sprayed liquids as well as the polyolefin surface were simultaneously activated; thus, the formation of different functional groups at the polyolefin surface was realized. The type of aerosol-sprayed additive, exposure time, power etc. have been found to determine the efficiency with respect to introduction of polar groups.
