The paper presents a comparison between different numerical modelling approaches aiming to simulate the in-plain behaviour of three types of earthen materials, namely adobe masonry, rammed earth and cob. For this purpose, uniaxial and diagonal compression tests were carried out, which allowed determining important mechanical parameters, such as compressive strength, Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio, shear strength and shear modulus. Furthermore, the tests allowed assessing the level of non-linear behaviour of the respective stress–strain relationships as well as the failure modes. The experimental results were then used for the calibration of numerical models (based on the finite element method) for simulating the non-linear behaviour of the earth materials under in-plane shear loading. Both macro- and micro-modelling approaches were considered for this purpose. The procedures adopted for model calibration established the reliability of various modelling strategies for the different loading conditions. The simplified Approach based on macromodelling shows a satisfactory accuracy and low computational costs. The results reproducing the uniaxial compression are in good correspondence with the post-elastic behaviour observed in the experimental campaign. The micro-modelling approach adopted to reproduce the shear behaviour, even with higher computational cost, represents a suitable tool to predict the adobe masonry and rammed earth collapse mechanisms.
Quantitative Auswertemöglichkeiten bei der spektralen Bestrahlung – Berechnung des Wirkungsspektrums
(2017)
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) are ubiquitous in the indoor air, since they emit from materials used indoors. Investigations of these materials are mostly carried out in test chambers under controlled climatic conditions. Quality control of these test chamber measurements is important but there is a lack of commercially available homogenous reference materials as required for round robin tests or quality assurance of laboratories. The approach of the present study is the impregnation of a supporting material with VOC, which are reproducibly released in measurable chamber air concentrations under standardised test conditions. A polymer made of Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) was chosen as carrier material. It was impregnated with the VOC trimethyl pentanediol isobutyrat (texanol).
In this paper, we demonstrate the effects of radiation exposures of polymeric materials with UV-A 340 nm lamps (ISO 4892-3, Type 1A) at -10 °C in comparison to an irradiation at +50 °C using a Global UV Test 200 fluorescent lamp device from Weiss Umwelttechnik GmbH, which incorporates an active cooling appliance. While the effects at -10 °C actually are lower than at + 50°C their extent was clearly beyond expectations.
Different climatic conditions and weather variables during natural and artificial exposure of polymers may be reasons for an unsatisfying correlation between the ageing results. Here the main differences are discussed for:
- Global solar radiation
In weathering devices there is a constant spectral irradiance which is 5 times higher than the averaged spectral irradiance outdoors, which is strongly varying in its diurnal course. Intensified weathering using Fresnel reflectors concentrates only the direct solar radiation with a relatively low UV proportion. Problems of reciprocity may arise from the different mean of irradiance levels.
- Temperatures at specimen surfaces.
Because of the high irradiance levels mentioned above, artificial exposures may lead to high surface temperatures and large temperature differences between differently coloured specimen surfaces, if the artificial radiation source emits much VIS- and IR-radiation. Outdoors the surface temperature and temperature differences of exposed specimens are influenced by considerably lower irradiance levels and additionally by an effective radiation loss in the night.
- Relative humidity at specimen surfaces
In weathering devices the relative humidity at specimen surfaces is very low if it is uncontrolled. If controlled by ultrasonic humidifiers or spray nozzles, the additional exposure to water droplets is quite likely.
- Wetness on specimen surfaces
All usual spray programs prescribed in weathering standards recommend frequently changing of short spray/dry periods and result in total times of wetness (TOW) of the exposed specimen surfaces which is only about 30 % of the outdoor TOW.
- Acidic precipitation and bio films
Acidic precipitation and bio films are usual outdoor conditions which are only considered in special weathering tests.
Outdoor exposure tests are a common tool to evaluate the weathering resistance of a polymeric material or component. However, they have only a limited validity, mainly due to the limited reproducibility of the weather as well as of the bad adaptability to other exposure sites. Typically, an outdoor exposure is characterized by the measured radiant exposure; sometimes averaged temperature data are added. These can be – separately – related to long-term annual means, to get an idea on the severity of the exposure.
However, as for polymeric ageing, irradiance and temperature act simultaneously, such severity of an outdoor exposure could be better described by a computed property change of a similar material, which is calculated from the hourly irradiance and temperature values on the base of established exposure response functions.
In this way, various outdoor exposures are evaluated. For several exposure sites, annual deviations of the ageing amount are related to annual mean values, to evaluate the weathering reproducibility at the exposure site. Additionally, correlations to relevant weather parameters are illuminated. Also some specific exposure conditions, such as tilt angle, are tested.
Compared to the use of weathering reference materials, this procedure unfavourably depends on the availability of a suited control as well as on the quality of the established exposure response function. In contrast, it enables a later exposure evaluation, on the base of documented weather data, if for instance no reference material was exposed.
Experiments have been performed at a test site with six different tracks with under-ballast plates. Hammer excitations of the soil and the tracks as well as train passages have been measured. The experimental observations are as follows. 1. The natural soil is stiff gravel whereas the railway dam consists of softer material. 2. The track compliance indicates a soft ballast if no train is present to provide a confining pressure. 3. The track response to the train passages can be split into a low-frequency region which is ruled by the static loads and a high-frequency region which is ruled by dynamic loads. 4. The track responses to hammer and track excitation indicate the presence of many voids between the sleepers and the ballast. 5. The ground vibrations are highly influenced by the soil. Due to the stiff soil at the site, the hammer and train induced spectra have a considerable high-frequency content. 6. A reduction of the ground vibration has been observed in a low-frequency range. The mitigation effects of an under-ballast plate are also investigated by calculations of a wavenumber domain model. The under-ballast plate has an effect at low frequencies where it distributes the static load over a longer track section. The impulse of the axle passage is longer and the frequencies are lower due to the plate stiffness. The axle impulses could yield a low-frequency ground vibration in an irregular soil with a randomly varying stiffness. This low-frequency part of the ground vibration (the scattered axle impulses) seem to be reduced by the under-ballast plate.
Synergistic effects of impurities in the condensate on the corrosion of CO2 transport pipeline
(2017)
For the reliability of transport pipelines the corrosion resistance of the materials used needs to be determined in conditions, which are possible during the transport process. In some situations condensation of components out of the CO2 stream can occur. To study the effect of condensate on transport pipeline steel, a “worst-case scenario” gas mixture, containing 2.5 % H2O, 1.8 % O2, 1000 ppmv NO2, and 220 ppmv SO2, was proposed, fed (1.5 L/min) into a glass reactor containing coupon-shaped specimens for 120 600 h at 278 K (to simulate the underground pipeline transport), and resulted in the condensate containing 0.114 M H2SO4 and 0.0184 M HNO3 (pH 2.13). Basing on this “original” condensate, exposure tests and electrochemical characterization together with pH and conductivity in CO2 saturated condition at the same temperature were carried out. The role of each gas impurity and the combination of them, when the condensate is formed, was studied by investigating the role of individual and varying combination of acidic components in the condensate on the corrosion behaviors of the commercial pipeline-steel (L360NB). It can be concluded that although the condensation of NOx in form of HNO3 causes faster corrosion rate, it is the condensation of SOx or the combination of SOx and NOx that may cause much more severe problems in form of localized and pitting corrosions. Different to the corrosion products formed in CO2 atmosphere without impurities (mainly iron carbonate) the corrosion products resulted from these acidic condensation have no protectability, indicating the need of controlling gas quality during the transportation within the pipeline network.
The paper investigates the dynamic characterisation along with the numerical model tuning and the seismic risk assessment of a monumental masonry tower in Italy namely the Santa Maria a Vico bell tower. Full-scale ambient vibration tests were performed under the impact of environmental loads. The technique of modal extraction in the frequency domain was applied. In-situ investigation survey was used in calibrating the refined 3D finite element model. The FEM tuning was carried out by varying the mechanical parameters and accounting for the restraint offered by the neighbouring buildings and the role of soil–structure interaction. The paper shows that the modal identification is a reliable technique that can be used in-situ for assessing the dynamic behaviour of monumental buildings. The tuned FEM model of the tower was usefully employed to determine the theoretical fundamental frequencies, which accurately fit the experiment data. Finally, the seismic performance of the bell tower was assessed using a non-linear static procedure based on the multi-modal pushover analysis and the capacity spectrum method. The results confirm that seismic events of moderate intensity can produce heavy damage to the masonry tower presented in this study.
An experimental investigation was carried out to study the in-plane shear behaviour of rammed earth structural elements strengthened with polyester fabric strips. The original idea for the retrofitting with polyester fabric strips was to introduce a vertical element for walls in order to take up horizontal loads resulting in a shear response of the building element. It has to be considered that vertical slits into the walls for fixing the strips are points of weakness and have to be mitigated by the adhesive. In this case a base coat mortar was employed. Strengthened elements were tested to exploit the strength potential of earthen materials and to solve its lack of tensile strength, significantly improving not only strength but also ductility. As part of the study results of a testing campaign of unstrengthened structural elements were considered. Strengthened elements were tested in diagonal compression/shear and cyclic shear-compression. A unique reinforcement orientation was used. The results of these tests are presented in this paper and include the load-displacement behaviours, crack patterns, failure modes. The results showed that the reinforcement was the most effective under cyclic shear-compression tests, with increase in load and displacement capacity observed. Under diagonal compression the reinforcement did not likely contribute significantly to the shear resistance, due to a lack of embedment length of the strips.
The life span of a building product is a key Parameter when it comes to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) performance. Nevertheless, many uncertainties affect this parameter due to a lack of long-term performance data. The sensitivity of the LCA outcomes to this parameter has been studied within the framework of the FP7 project H-House (Healthier Life with Eco-innovative Components for Housing Constructions) funded by the European Commission.
The paper Features two comparative studies conducted within the scope of this project: one for new construction and another for renovation. An innovative precast sandwich panel made of Textile Reinforced Concrete (TRC) and Foamed Concrete (FC), used for external walls in new construction, is compared with a steel reinforced concrete (SRC) wall of the same thermal resistance. For renovation, a novel halfsandwich panel made of Ultra-High-Performance-Concrete (UHPC) and Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) is compared with cladding having the same thermal performance. The Evaluation was conducted using a multi-criteria basis according to the LCA methodology (ISO 14040- 44). In each case, an identical life span for both scenarios leads to the fact that H-House components have a better environmental performance. The ISO 15686 and ist relevant parts have been considered for the estimation of the service life span. The sensitivity analysis shows the link between the impact savings of the innovative walls and the life span of the walls and their components. In particular, it was found that since both scenarios need to fulfil the same service during an identical reference period, and since some maintenance and replacement of materials are necessary over time for standard Solutions compared to the innovative ones, the chosen life span of the components plays a role of utmost importance. The sensitivity analysis discloses the effect of the assumptions on these aspects.
This paper presents the development of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) for façade elements with self-cleaning properties. For creating self-cleaning surfaces two different approaches are proposed. One approach is based on the photocatalytic activation of the external UHPC shell by incorporation of TiO2 particles. The second approach consists of the modification of the UHPC surface by micro structuring in combination with the application of hydrophobic agents to create durable super hydrophobicity. In the framework of the H-HOUSE Project funded by the European Commission the experimental investigations were performed with UHPC based on Dyckerhoff Nanodur® technology. The special properties of this material enable the precise reproduction of any micro structure without flaws. The current results obtained from laboratory and outdoor weathering tests are promising and demonstrate the feasibility of the approaches.
Mediaeval stained glass has been treated with Polymethylmetacrylate coatings by Kwiatkowski in Poland during the 1950th. Such treated panels were found in the Johannis Church of Toruń (without protective glazing), in the Cathedral of Włocławek (behind a protective glazing), and on glass kept in exhibition cases in the museum of Toruń. Surface coatings have been detected and analyzed. There was no extensive contamination by fungi or bacteria if the glass was either coated or not.
This paper introduces a novel robotic platform for aerial remote gas sensing. Spectroscopic measurement methods for remote sensing of selected gases lend themselves for use on mini-copters, which offer a number of advantages for inspection and surveillance. No direct contact with the target gas is needed and thus the influence of the aerial platform on the measured gas plume can be kept to a minimum. This allows to overcome one of the major issues with gas-sensitive mini-copters. On the other hand, remote gas sensors, most prominently Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS) sensors have been too bulky given the payload and energy restrictions of mini-copters. Here, we introduce and present the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle for Remote Gas Sensing (UAV-REGAS), which combines a novel lightweight TDLAS sensor with a 3-axis aerial stabilization gimbal for aiming on a versatile hexacopter. The proposed system can be deployed in scenarios that cannot be addressed by currently available robots and thus constitutes a significant step forward for the field of Mobile Robot Olfaction (MRO). It enables tomographic reconstruction of gas plumes and a localization of gas sources. We also present first results showing the gas sensing and aiming capabilities under realistic conditions.
For mobile robots that operate in complex, uncontrolled environments, estimating air flow models can be of great importance. Aerial robots use air flow models to plan optimal navigation paths and to avoid turbulence-ridden areas. Search and rescue platforms use air flow models to infer the location of gas leaks. Environmental monitoring robots enrich pollution distribution maps by integrating the information conveyed by an air flow model. In this paper, we present an air flow modelling algorithm that uses wind data collected at a sparse number of locations to estimate joint probability distributions over wind speed and direction at given query locations. The algorithm uses a novel extrapolation approach that models the air flow as a linear combination of laminar and turbulent components. We evaluated the prediction capabilities of our algorithm with data collected with an aerial robot during several exploration runs. The results show that our algorithm has a high degree of stability with respect to parameter selection while outperforming conventional extrapolation approaches. In addition, we applied our proposed approach in an industrial application, where the characterization of a ventilation system is supported by a ground mobile robot. We compared multiple air flow maps recorded over several months by estimating stability maps using the Kullback-Leibler divergence between the distributions. The results show that, despite local differences, similar air flow patterns prevail over time. Moreover, we corroborated the validity of our results with knowledge from human experts.
The aim of this study was to develop a lightweight composite façade element for refurbishment of existing façades. It was crucial to minimize the thermal bridges and to undercut the thermal requirement of the system existing façade new element. The awareness of the environmental impact of the building sector is increasing. In this context, ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) materials are shown to be promising alternatives with advantages such as lower embodied energy and reduced environmental impact. Predictions suggest that UHPC composite elements for building envelopes could have other benefits such as an increased service life, optimized use of building area due to thinner elements and minimized maintenance due to the absence of reinforcement or use of non-corrosive reinforcing materials such as carbon fibers. In this framework, composite elements have been developed combining an autoclaved aerated concrete insulation layer with an external UHPC supporting layer. The results show that the lightweight composite element has a good performance in term of thermal transmittance and minimization of thermal bridges.
Two types of surface modified magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles, coated with either tannic acid (TA) or dissolved natural organic matter (NOM), were evaluated as magnetic heterogeneous catalysts. Simple and efficient procedures for the synthesis of the magnetic catalysts were employed, their properties being fully assessed by various characterization techniques. The catalytic activity in heterogeneous oxidation of aqueous solutions containing Bisphenol A (BPA) over the catalysts was comparatively studied. The optimum experimental parameters were: 1g/L of catalysts, 10 mM H2O2, under UV irradiation. The highest mineralization rates were observed for Fe3O4-TA catalyst. More than 80% of BPA were removed after 30 minutes of reaction time under the specified experimental conditions. The results showed that the obtained catalysts are suitable candidates for the removal of pollutants in wastewaters by means of heterogeneous reaction

Photodegradation of the „novel“ brominated flame retardant tris-(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)-s-triazine
(2016)
Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) comprise a class of structurally diverse compounds that are functionally related and used in materials to reduce the flammability of polymers. Due to their global distribution, potential persistence, bioaccumulation and toxicity most of the BFRs of the first Generation are banned or restricted, and replaced by new ones. However, based on similar properties these new compounds may also pose a serious risk by causing adverse effects to human health and the environment.
These alternative BFRs were grouped into two classes: „novel” and „emerging” BFRs. Emerging BFRs are defined as compounds that have been identified in any environmental compartments whereas novel BFRs are only detected in materials and/or goods above 0.1 wt.-%.
The environmental fate of these alternative BFRs is partially unknown. Over the past years a multitude of studies on the photodegradation of BFRs in environmental matrices have been conducted to assess the photochemical behavior and fate in the environment. The photolytic debromination reaction is particularly induced among BFRs by UV exposure.
The novel brominated triazine-based flame retardant tris-(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)-s-triazine (TTBPTAZ) (Table 1) is a BFR that is mainly used in acrylonitrile butadiene styrene and high impact polystyrene.
Ballesteros-Gómez et al. detected TTBP-TAZ in 8 of 13 plastic parts of consumer products and in 9 of 17 indoor dust samples but the photochemical behavior and fate is not known until now.
The results of the present study, focused on photodegradation processes were performed for the first time for TTBP-TAZ to identify the photolysis intermediates and products to assess the environmental fate.
The repair of earthen structures is not an easy task. Earth as a construction material has comparatively weak mechanical properties. It is also susceptible towards liquid water, were it can lose cohesion very quickly if certain moisture contents are exceeded. Repair concepts of structures built with such materials are therefore challenging. Historical earthen structures often exhibit damages in form of extensive cracking, which may have been caused by static or dynamic loads. Frequently these cracks are insufficiently or inappropriately repaired because of lack of knowledge and / or technology. In particular, the behaviour of crack repair by grouting poses a challenge in earthen materials and demands specific requirements for the grouting mortar, such as low water content, good water retention, low shrinkage. Grouting materials require additional specifications such as compatible strengths and Young’s modulus as well as good adhesion to the earthen substrates. In addition, grouts have to be sufficiently flowable to fill small cracks and voids without segregation or bleeding. Therefore, the rheological behaviour has to be well understood and controlled to gain the desired effects.
The repair of cracks in earthen buildings is traditionally done by stuffing manually mortar into the gap. Naturally, this method is only usable for cracks with large widths. Another disadvantage is that cracks going through thicker walls cannot be completely reached by the tools used for stuffing the mortar into the crack. Lime based grouts for earthen materials were usually used for re-attachment of plasters but less for structural reasons. Due to the nature of earthen materials grouts based on formulated or hydraulic lime (according to the definition in EN 459-1) have to meet considerable demands on a variety of properties, which are related to compatibility, durability and in particular to the ability of being injected. The goal of this study was to create a grout, which can be used to re-establish structural continuity in cracked earthen masonry or other massive earth walls (rammed earth and cob) with the focus on grouting cracks. The grout material was based on hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide) with additions of pozzolana and lime stone filler.
V. (DVL).
In-plane shear behaviour of earthen materials panels strengthened with polyester fabric strips
(2016)
An experimental investigation was carried out to study the in-plane shear behaviour of earthen material Panels strengthened with polyester fabric strips. Strengthened panels were developed to exploit the strength potential of earthen materials and to solve its lack of tensile strength, significantly improving not only strength but also ductility. Three earthen materials were considered: cob, earth block masonry (EBM) and rammed earth (RE). As first approach the strengthening configuration, based on different adhesive materials, was tested only for cob panels. As part of the study the results of a big testing campaign of unstrengthened Panels were considered. Seven strengthened panels were tested in diagonal compression/shear.A unique reinforcement orientation was used. The results of these tests are presented in this paper, and include the load-displacement behaviours, crack patterns, failure modes. The results showed that the reinforcement was the most effective in EBM panels, with increase in strength and ductility observed. In RE and cob panels the reinforcement did not likely contribute significantly to the shear resistance, due to a lack of embedment length of the strips. Instead, in EBM it was likely that the vertical reinforcement acted in tension to restrain shear induced dilation and to restrain sliding.

The increasing pollution of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems with plastic debris, which leads to the accumulation of microscopic plastic particles of still unknown fate, is an upcoming problem of our time. In order to monitor the degree of contamination and to understand the underlying processes of degradation and internalization of plastic debris, analytical methods are urgently needed, which help to identify and quantify microplastics. Currently, expensive collected and purified materials enriched on filters are investigated by (micro) infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Few studies using micro-Raman spectroscopy have been published as well. In contrast to FTIR, Raman spectroscopy can handle wet samples, but it suffers from interference of fluorescent materials. Both micro-FTIR- and micro-Raman, always include time consuming scanning and mapping procedures followed by the manual inspection and measurement of selected particles.
An Annex XV restriction dossier for cadmium in artists’ paints was submitted by an EU member state to the European Chemicals Agency ECHA. By cleaning used brushes under the tap cadmium can enter the food chain via waste water treatment and subsequent agricultural application of the sewage sludge. It was estimated that 110 kg Cd per year is spread on agricultural land via this exposure route. Other sources of Cd amount to almost 120 tons per year.
The mobility of Cd from pigments was studied in a field-like scenario by leaching experiments using soil samples amended with sewage sludge and spiked with Cd pigments in percolation columns. The redox conditions were confirmed to be the decisive factor for the release of Cd. The release of Cd from artists’ paints was in most cases 1% or lower in the experiments performed.
Cd from artists’ paints in sewage sludge applied in agriculture will be mobilized for intake by crops or to leaching either by oxidation of sulfide to sulfate or by dissolution at lower pH values. The quantity of Cd from artists’ paints calculated in the restriction dossier is however negligible compared to other sources of Cd to agricultural soil. Therefore ECHA did not consider the proposed restriction to be the most appropriate EU wide measure to address the negligible level of risk. In the presentation sources of Cd on agricultural land will be discussed together with possible policy instruments to mitigate such emissions.
Due to the increasing presence of microplastic particles (MP) in the Environment and the unknown risks arising from them, there is an urgent need for analytical methods that allow for an efficient identification and quantification of microplastics (MP), i.e. particles < 5 mm, in environmental samples. So far, mostly timeconsuming (micro) infrared or micro-Raman spectroscopic methods are applied. Here an faster alternative Approach is presented based on a Raman processspectrometer with fiber-optical probes in combination with multivariate data analysis.
Biocide leaching was investigated for acrylate and vinyl acetate based coatings containing biocides either as liquid formulations or microcapsules. Laboratory and field tests indicate similar relations of results on carbendazim, diuron, terbutryn and OIT from different coatings in laboratory and field experiments. Emissions were higher in EN 16105 laboratory tests than from vertically installed test specimens exposed to weathering, and slower for microencapsulated biocides. Competing processes that cause losses of active substances can occur in both tests, but to a higher degree in field experiments. Emission curves related to runoff water were similar in repeated field experiments. Relative humidity, temperature and global radiation were identified as meteorological factors that affect leaching by complex interaction besides the amount of driving rain.
Concrete is one of the most widely used construction materials and, accordingly, the concrete industry is an important stakeholder in the field of sustainable construction. Therefore various approaches have been implemented to increase the sustainability of concrete. Besides reducing CO2-emissions during cement production, increasing the energy efficiency of buildings and extending their life span, the end-of-life performance of concrete is also an essential aspect of sustainability. Reusing concrete as a secondary building material meets the requirements of sustainability in several ways: the extended time availability of primary raw materials and, thereby, the protection of natural resources as well as conserving landfill site. Furthermore, the production of recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) is a good example for closed-loop recycling.
However, regarding the use of RCA as a substitute for natural aggregates in concrete, attention must be paid to all issues of sustainability: this means that environmental, economic and social aspects have to be considered. Since RCA generally have inferior building material properties, such as higher porosity and lower density, the implementation of closed-loop recycling of concrete only makes sense if the technical quality assurance is secured. This paper focusses on the implementation of techniques for the deconstruction/demolition of buildings and the subsequent treatment of concrete rubble in order to improve the building material properties of RCA with regard to the requirements of sustainability and also technical rules and standards.
Due to the large quantities of construction and demolition waste (CDW) in Europe, its reuse or recycling is of particular importance. Although several countries already recycle high amounts of CDW, the use as secondary raw materials is often limited by inferior building material properties. Specific characteristics, like high porosity and low density are caused by hardened cement paste in crushed concrete and the content of mortar and plaster in brick debris. Impurities like wood or gypsum and also harmful substances like organic pollutants may be a major problem for a reuse and should be minimized. Therefore unwanted materials and impairing substances have to be separated from the secondary building material stream. This can be done during the demolition process by using techniques for selective dismantling or during the subsequent treatment of the resulting rubble. Since almost all processing steps are associated with environmental impacts, the benefits of saving natural resources by applying secondary building materials should be weighed carefully. An environmental performance evaluation was undertaken to assess different techniques for reducing gypsum in recycled concrete aggregates, aiming at a minimization of elutable sulfates. These results were compared to the environmental impacts of the extraction of natural aggregates for concrete.

Was steckt eigentlich hinter diesen strengen Regelungen?
Recovery of rare earth elements - optimized elemental analysis of fluorescent lamp shredder waste
(2016)
Rare earth elements (REE) are a crucial component of fluorescence lamps. Several procedures have been developed to recovery these technological important elements. Nevertheless, actual REE recycling from fluorescence lamps is scarce so far (recovery rate of less than 1 %), with current recycling approaches concentrating on glass recovery. Since most recycling processes include several, also wet-chemical steps, a complete knowledge of the actual elemental composition of the respective mass flows is necessary for an efficient REE recovery. We tested seven different reagent mixtures for microwave-assisted digestion of fluorescent lamp shredder, including HF, HClO4, and H2O2. We determined the concentrations of 25 of the most relevant rare earth and other trace elements in the respective dilutions. Two independent digestions, one a mixture of perchlorid/nitric/hydrofluoric acid and the other aqua regia, showed the highest concentrations of 23 of these elements, excluding only Sn and Tb. The REE concentrations in the tested lamp shredder sample (stated in g/kg) were 10.2 (Y), 12.1 (La), 7.77 (Ce), 6.91 (Eu), 1.90 (Gd), and 4.11 (Tb).
Compared to the designated European upper reference level of 300 Bq/m³ for indoor radon concentrations, the contribution of building materials appears to be low. Taking into account the recommended limit of 100 Bq/m³ by WHO as well as the increased dose conversion factor, the contribution of building products is quite relevant, especially at low air change rates. Therefore in Germany a maximum contribution of building materials to the indoor radon concentration of 20 Bq/m³ is discussed.
Because measurements of low concentrations are associated with high uncertainties, radon exhalation rates are often determined in chambers without air exchange and indoor conditions are extrapolated.
This study investigated the suitability of direct low level radon measurement under simulated indoor conditions with commercially available instruments, based on the preliminary EU standard for the determination of the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC) from building materials in test chambers.
Measurements are possible with a relative uncertainty ranging from 7 to 18%. Four major problems were identified:
1. Detector sensitivity: Two of four instruments were identified to determine low radon concentrations in a sufficiently short measuring time.
2. Thoron discrimination: Thoron was discriminated by aging the sampled air in a hose before the detector.
3. Sampling setup: An external chamber measurement was feasible as long as all main system parts were under slight overpressure.
4. Blank value: For VOC-emission testing ambient air, conditioned by filtration and sorption, is used to generate an air exchange. Regarding radon, this treatment is non-effective. If all instrument background levels have been characterized, the blank value must be measured with a second detector in parallel.
Small grain sizes of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) bottom ash (BA) contain elemental and chemically bonded metals in appreciable amounts, especially copper. As different copper species have in general a higher density compared to the prevalent minerals, processes for density separation seemed to be favorable for the recovery of copper. Investigations with a centrifugal classifier were therefore carried out with BA from MWSI which have been used for a few years as the covering material for a landfill. The results show an appreciable enrichment of the precious copper. The concentrates contained up to 60 mg/kg copper in the dry weight (DW) (in general about 30 – 40 mg/kg DW) with enrichment factors of around 20 and a copper recovery of up to 50 % (in general around 20 %). A test series in order to evaluate the potential benefit for sequential processing illustrate the low efficiency for a further processing of the tailings.
The recent experience of Italian seismic events provided wide observational information about typical behaviour, damage patterns and intrinsic vulnerability of monumental buildings. Evidence indicates that historical constructions are by far the most vulnerable from the seismic point of view. As a consequence, they demand for the definition of urgent strategies for the protection of cultural heritage from seismic hazard. The main goal of an in-depth knowledge of the structure should help to avoid inadequate, unsuitable or dangerous rehabilitation operations, as well as to select non-invasive and reversible techniques for the best exploitation of material and technology features. The definition of reliable models and methods for seismic risk assessment of historical constructions is today a very important topic. Typical problems of masonry structures concern aspects like inherent structural lacks, material degradation, geotechnical problems, buckling behaviour of slender elements and dynamic loading vulnerability. Modelling the mechanical behaviour of masonry may play an important role, due to both inherent material complexity and great scatter in mechanical properties. Effective procedures for the identification of the structural parameters from static and dynamic testing are thus required. In particular, dynamic measurements may be very useful for the identification of mechanical properties and soil restraints and, consequently, for the calibration of advanced numerical finite element models. The paper addresses two case studies of structural monitoring and seismic assessment of medieval masonry towers in Italy: the bell tower of Aversa and the bell tower of Capua. These monuments, placed in the Campania region, were monitored by means of full-scale environmental vibration testing. Measured responses are then used for modal identification with a typical finite element model updating technique based on vibration test results. Parameters optimization is carried out on the basis of a criterion which minimises a weighted error on modal properties. A satisfactory improvement in the determination of modal parameters is thus obtained, resulting in a close agreement between the modal properties observed in dynamic tests and those calculated from numerical model. Seismic assessment is finally performed based on nonlinear static analysis of the tower under multimodal distributions of lateral loads. Results from nonlinear analysis indicate the potential collapse mechanisms and evidence dangerous structural weakness which may play a role in the seismic vulnerability of the towers.
