The basis for the development and evaluation of equations of state for mixtures is experimental data for several thermodynamic properties. The quality and the availability of experimental data limit the achievable accuracy of the equation. Referring to the fundamentals of GERG-2008 wide-range equation of state, no suitable data were available for many mixtures containing secondary natural gas components. This work provides accurate experimental (p,rho,T) data for two binary mixtures of methane with Helium (0.95 (amount-of-substance fraction) CH4 + 0.05 He and 0.90 CH4 + 0.10 He). Density measurements were performed at temperatures between (250 and 400) K and pressures up to 20 MPa by using a single-sinker densimeter with magnetic suspension coupling. Experimental data were compared with the corresponding densities calculated from the GERG-2008 and the AGA8-DC92 equations of state. Deviations from GERG-2008 were found within a 2% band for the (0.95 CH4 + 0.05 He) mixture but exceeded the 3% Limit for the (0.95 CH4 + 0.05 He) mixture. The highest deviations were observed at T = 250 K and pressures between (17 and 19) MPa. Values calculated from AGA8-DC92, however, deviated from the experimental data by only 0.1% at high pressures and exceeded the 0.2% limit only at temperatures of 300 K and above, for the (0.90 CH4 + 0.10 He) mixture.
Comparison of traceable methods for determining the calorific value of non-conventional fuel gases

Energy-content measurements by direct methods (such as calorimetry) are used to validate the indirect method (from gas composition obtained by gas chromatography) which is generally adopted by grid operators for on-site gas control. A primary reference gas calorimeter and three field calorimeters were used for the first time to measure accurately the energy content of non-conventional gases (biogas and coal mine methane). The gas mixtures for this study were prepared by gravimetry and comprised three binary mixtures containing carbon dioxide and (up to 80 mol-%) methane, three ternary mixtures containing carbon dioxide, (up to 70 mol-%) methane and (up to 0.3 mol-%) hydrogen sulphide as well as a ten-component mixture with a methane content of approximately 64 mol-% which represents a typical coal mine methane. Associated uncertainty calculations were developed for each instrument and are presented here. Traceability of the measurements to the SI units is ensured in reference calorimetry, as calibration is accomplished by electrical simulation based on the Joule effect in order to obtain the heat capacity of the entire system. The results obtained with the four calorimeters are compared with each other and also with results calculated from the indirect method that is based on gas chromatography. Uncertainties (k = 2) between 0.07 and 0.49% for the reference gases were obtained with the reference calorimeter, while uncertainties for the field calorimeters range between 0.18 and 2.48% for the same mixtures. Compared to the usual standard deviation observed by gas chromatography for a multicomponent gas mixture of about 1%, it is demonstrated that the calorimetric method, although rarely used for non-conventional gases before, is appropriate for energy-content measurements of gases originating from renewable energy sources.
Strain and acceleration measurement during high dynamic drop tests, e.g., of containments for dangerous goods is performed using high speed multichannel measuring systems. So far established and operated systems need a cable connection of every strain gauge and acceleration sensor with the measuring device, often counting up to a number of more than 100 cables, corresponding to the number of applied sensors. The result is a massive cable harness consisting of all single cables, which is difficult to handle and causes a number of practical problems. An innovative approach is proposed by using a single cable measuring system, consisting of measuring modules with data bus connection and local data acquisition. Promising results were presented in a previous study. This paper follows up with additional results from full-scale testing of a further enhanced single cable system for the application in drop tests.
Concept for investigating mechanical and thermal impacts on distributed subsurface gas monitoring

A multifunctional sensor in line shape was developed and introduced in previous work for measuring of gas concentrations, temperature change, and strain. A current field study focuses on a spatially distributed monitoring of subsurface CO 2 gas storage sites in near real time.
Mechanical impacts, e.g., caused by construction work, denudation, and seismic activity, can affect the integrity of underground gas storage sites. Thermal or moisture impacts, e.g., caused by weather conditions, can influence the gas Distribution behavior. In this paper, we briefly describe the setup of a CO 2 injection soil test field. This setup contains actuating elements for the investigation of mechanical and thermal impacts on distributed subsurface gas monitoring. A concept is given for evaluating these impacts and first experimental results are presented.
Die IAEA Transportempfehlungen stellen die Basis der sicherheitstechnischen Anforderungen von Behältern zum Transport radioaktiver Stoffe dar. Sie gelten als international harmonsiert und werden regelmäßig an den Stand von Wissenschaft und Technik angepasst. Der laufende Revisionsprozess berücksichtigt mehr als 150 Vorschläge zur Weiterentwicklung des Regelwerks. Wesentliche Themen, die für die hoheitlichen Prüfungen im Zuständigkeitsbereich der BAM eine Rolle spielen, werden im Vortrag vorgestellt. Das Implementieren der besonderen sicherheitstechnischen Anforderungen an Zwischenlagerbehälter werden im Detail behandelt. Ebenfalls von Interesse ist die Weiterenticklung der Anforderungen, die den Einfluss des radioaktiven Inventars auf das Verschlusssystem bei Fallprüfungen diskutiert.
Das Buch zeigt einen alternativen Weg der Sicherheitsbeurteilung von Druckbehältern aus Faserverbundwerkstoffen. Dies ist insbesondere für die Mobilität der Zukunft und die zugehörige Energieversorgung mit Bio-/Erdgas und Wasserstoff von Interesse. Mit statistischen Methoden gelingt es, die Sicherheit auch jenseits der Grenzen aktueller Vorschriften fundiert zu beurteilen. Es wird dargelegt wie eine probabilistische sicherheitsbeurteilung als Alternative aussehen könnte. Dieser Ansatz basiert auf neuen Verfahren der zerstörenden Prüfung und statistischer Auswertung relevanter Festigkeitseigenschaften. Hierzu zählen die langsame Berstprüfung und ein spezielles Arbeitsdiagramm zur Auswertung von Stichproben. Darüber hinaus erlaubt der Ansatz die Quantifizierung der Degradation im Betrieb und zeigt Wege zur Abschätzung der Lebensdauer. Sicherheit wird diskutiert als Kombination von Überlebenswahrscheinlichkeit und Konsequenz.
Gas sensors in linear form based on the measuring principle of gas selective permeability through a membrane were developed and introduced for the detection and quantification of gas concentrations. A current field study focuses on measuring CO2 concentrations for a spatially distributed monitoring of subsurface CO2 gas storage sites in near real time. A 400 m² test site and a corresponding laboratory system were built up to characterize, validate, and optimize the sensor. A calibration routine was developed, which can be applied subsequently to underground installation. First measurement results indicate the potential of the method.
This presentation starts with a brief overview about the current situation of spent nuclear fuel and high level waste storage in Germany followed by a discussion of the expected timeline towards final disposal. Furthermore an overview is presented about research programmes for radioactive waste disposal and also extended interim storage issues due to the delay of the national repository siting procedure. In the second part of the presentation BAM research activities related to extended interim storage are addressed. This includes the status and preliminary results of proactive R&D projects concerning metal seals, degradation effects of polymers used as neutron shielding materials and finally elastomer seals.
This presentation addresses safety aspects concerning dual purpose casks for transportation and storage of spent fuel and high level radioactive waste. The long term performance of casks and their safety relevant components like sealed lid systems and the long term performance of cask internals, especially spent fuel assemblies are discussed. Transportation after interim storage is another key issue and due to the fact of delayed disposal projects current interim storage periods need to be extended causing additional safety demonstration needs for longer periods of time. Regarding this situation present BAM research activities in this area and their preliminary outcomes are presented.
Matrimid and Matrimid/PhenethylPOSS nanocomposites films were prepared by solution casting. They can be considered as potential membrane materials for gas separation. Theire dielectric properties were investigated using Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BDS) in combination with standard techniques. Matrimid shows one relaxation process assigned as beta*-relaxation and a conductivity contribution. The relaxation process has a high activation energy of 99 kJ/mol. Thus this process is supposed to be of cooperative nature due to a π-π stacking of the phenyl rings of Matrimid. The influence of the thermal history on Matrimid was analyzed with BDS as well where an annealing effect is found. The Matrimid/PhenethylPOSS nanocomposites show up to a concentration of about 4 wt% PhenethylPOSS a miscibility on a molecular level. For higher concentrations a phase separated structure was indicated. The conductivity of both systems is explained by π-π stacking of the phenyl rings which enhances charge transport.
Schnelle Lastwechsel führen v.a. in dickwandigen Kraftwerksbauteilen zu starken thermischen und mechanischen Beanspruchungen, da sich hohe Temperaturgradienten über der Wand des Bauteils einstellen. Es ergeben sich komplexe Lastkollektive aus zeitlich veränderlichen Spannungen/Dehnungen und Temperaturen, die formal einer Kombination aus Kriechbeanspruchung, Kriechermüdung und thermomechanischer Ermüdung (TMF) entsprechen.
A bottom-up approach is presented for the production of arrays of indium islands on a molybdenum layer on glass, which can serve as micro-sized precursors for indium compounds such as copper-indium-gallium-diselenide used in photovoltaics. Femtosecond laser ablation of glass and a subsequent deposition of a molybdenum film or direct laser processing of the molybdenum film both allow the preferential nucleation and growth of indium islands at the predefined locations in a following indium-based physical vapor deposition (PVD) process. A proper choice of laser and deposition parameters ensures the controlled growth of indium islands exclusively at the laser ablated spots. Based on a statistical analysis, these results are compared to the non-structured molybdenum surface, leading to randomly grown indium islands after PVD.
Polymers with intrinsic microporosity are of highly interest in the field of gas separation membranes. Especially the first synthesized PIM-1 shows extraordinary permeabilities and selectivities. Unfortunately, PIM-1 tends to physical aging and loses its good properties. Physical aging is related to the molecular mobility of PIM-1 which was here investigated by broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS). Besides the studies on pure PIM-1 a polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane with phenethyl substituents (PhenethylPOSS) was used as nanofiller (0 - 40 wt-%) in the PIM-1 matrix to improve the gas transport properties and prevent physical aging. The molecular mobility of the solution casted nano composite films was analyzed by BDS as well. Furthermore, gas transport properties were determined with the time lag method (0 - 20 bar) in a temperature range of 35°C to 65°C with N2, O2, CH4 and CO2.
Increasing performance and energy efficiency of Gas Metal Arc Welding by a high power tandem process

Standard Gas Metal Arc Welding (Standard GMAW) and a high power Tandem GMAW (TGMAW) process are evaluated with respect to energy efficiency. Current, voltage and overall equipment power are measured and energy consumption is determined. The new key performance indicator Electrical Deposition Efficiency is introduced to reflect the energy efficiency of GMAW processes. Additionally, wallplug efficiency of the equipment is determined in order to identify the overall energy consumption. Results show that energy efficiency as well as economic process performance can be significantly increased by application of the TGMAW process. Furthermore findings indicate that wall-plug efficiency of the equipment is independent of power Level and material transfer mode. A metal plate of 30 mm thick structural steel is joined by Standard GMAW and TGMAW to demonstrate the total energy savings for a real weld. Electricity consumption is reduced by more than 20 % using the high power TGMAW process.
Geogenic gases from natural sources, carbon dioxide (CO2) from a geological repository (carbon capture and storage - CCS) or a leaking gas pipeline can present serious risks in industrial and urban areas. To extend the lead time for risk treatment in such critical regions, reliable detection of gases within the shallow subsurface is required to observe critical gas accumulations before degassing into the atmosphere.
A near real-time monitoring approach is introduced to determine the volumetric expansion of a leakinggas in the subsurface. Considering the pressure relaxation with the ambient air pressure, the approach enables the forecasting of the final size of a pressurized gas body in terms of characteristic lengths. According to theoretical basics, such a characteristic length, which enables us to perform a gas (safety) measurement based on a purely geometrical measure, behaves independently of subsurface properties,i.e., it enables a reliable quantification of the escaping gas irrespective of its heterogeneous or changingflow path distribution. A field test for a 10 l/min pinhole leakage injected into a 10 m long, 0.4 m wide, 0.95 m deep soil-filled trench that was equipped with linear sensors shows the lateral-vertical volumetric gas expansion along these sensors, and demonstrates the applicability of the characteristic length approach.
In previous papers, we investigated the influence of biodiesel or diesel on mechanical properties of a high-density polyethylene (PE-HD) for tank applications using Charpy impact tests and dynamicmechanical analysis (DMA). In this work, covering two more PE-HD materials, we extend our study to addressing the tensile properties, especially changes of Young's modulus, after immersion in biodiesel or diesel at 60 °C. As we cover sorption and desorption behavior, during desorption, i.e. storage at 60 °C in a circulating air oven, ageing or degradation phenomena were also observed and characterized in some detail using spectral reflectance measurements and FT-IR spectroscopy. The results obtained here support the concept of co-oxidation, i.e. the faster oxidation of the PE-HD matrix if the samples were previously saturated with biodiesel, itself easily oxidizable.
Bisherige Betriebserfahrungen und Erkenntnisse lassen die grundsätzliche Eignung der Transport- und Lagerbehälter auch über 40 Jahre hinaus erwarten.
Eine Verlängerung der genehmigten Zwischenlagerdauer erfordert eine Neugenehmigung. Hierbei sind die zu diesem Zeitpunkt sicherheitstechnisch relevanten Eigenschaften der tatsächlich vorhandenen Inventare und Behälter zu berücksichtigen.
Sicherheitstechnische Nachweise sind auf Grundlage belastbarer Daten und Erkenntnisse zu führen. Diese müssen rechtzeitig verfügbar sein (z.B. Betriebserfahrungen oder zusätzliche F&E-Programme z.B. zu Behälterdichtsystemen oder Inventarverhalten).
Alterungsmanagementprogramme und periodische Sicherheits-überprüfungen während der Zwischenlagerung haben sowohl für die verlängerte Zwischenlagerung als auch für nachfolgende Transporte eine erhebliche Bedeutung.Die Schaffung eines spezifischen Regelwerks für die verlängerte Zwischenlagerung von Transport- und Lagerbehältern und deren nachfolgendem Abtransport unter Berücksichtigung der Anforderungen aus beiden Verwendungsbereichen erscheint sinnvoll.
Eine verlängerte Zwischenlagerung dient ausschließlich der Überbrückung bis zur Endlagerung. Hierbei sollten die bestehenden Behälter und Inventare frühzeitig in die Überlegungen zur Definition von Anforderungen für die Endlagerung einbezogen werden.
Die internationalen Entwicklungen und Untersuchungen im Bereich der längerfristigen Zwischenlagerung sollten zur Nutzung von Synergieeffekten weiter verfolgt, ausgewertet und mitgestaltet werden.
We report on the successful application of distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) to the detection of partial discharge (PD). A detection limit of about 1 nC discharge magnitude was achieved for PD in a real-scale model of a high voltage termination. Dedicated ultrasonic fibre-optic transducers were interrogated using coherent optical time-domain Rayleigh backscatter reflectometry (C-OTDR). Random quadrature demodulation was employed for retrieving relevant acoustic information from the raw C-OTDR backscatter traces. To our knowledge, our results are a first-time demonstration that quasi-distributed fibre-optic acoustic sensing is a candidate technology for the acoustic partial discharge monitoring of power cable joints and terminations.
Ergopeptides, like ergocornine and a-ergocryptine, exist in an S- and in an R-configuration. Kinetic experiments imply that certain configurations are preferred depending on the solvent. The experimental methods are explained in this article. Furthermore, computational methods are used to understand this configurational preference. Standard quantum chemical methods can predict the favored configurations by using minimum energy calculations on the potential energy landscape. However, the explicit role of the solvent is not revealed by this type of methods. In order to better understand its influence, classical mechanical molecular simulations are applied. It appears from our research that 'folding' the ergopeptide molecules into an intermediate state (between the S- and the R-configuration) is mechanically hindered for the preferred configurations.
This paper presents a finite element model of an overhead transmission line using so called cable elements which allow reproducing the cable's nonlinear characteristics accurately employing only a few elements. Aerodynamic damping is considered in the equation of motion by taking into account the relative velocity between the flow of the wind and the moving structure. The wind flow itself is simulated by wave superposition making necessary assumptions on the lateral correlation between the wind velocities along the cable length. As result from the simulation, the following conclusions can be drawn. The first natural frequency of generally used wide spanning cables lies well below 1 Hz where also most of the energy content of the wind excitation is to be expected. Aerodynamic damping is significant for the moving cables holding very low structural damping which leads to a suppression of resonant amplification. This is particularly of interest regarding the support reaction which is dominated by the mean value and the so called background response. The latter is mostly influenced by the randomness of the wind flow, especially lateral to the main wind direction.

The diffusion flames of organic peroxides exhibit quite different characteristics than hydrocarbons. What makes them interesting to study is their fast burning behaviour. As a result the flame temperature enhances and so does the thermal radiation. Due to all these they demand safe handling during processing. However, they can be utilised at several places in different industries where a fuel with fast burning, high temperature and intense radiation are desired. Some of the possibilities to use them as a main or supporting fuel in a wide range of industrial utilities are the major content of this paper.
Transport packages for spent nuclear fuel have to be assessed with respect to specific transport conditions which are defined in the safety regulations of the International Atomic Energy Agency. In general, gastight fuel rods constitute the first barrier of the containment system. The physical state of the spent fuel and the fuel rod cladding as well as the geometric configuration of the fuel assemblies are important inputs for the evaluation of the package safety under transport conditions. The objective of this paper is to discuss the methodologies accepted by BAM for the authority assessment of spent fuel behavior within the package design approval procedure of German package designs. In particular, cracks or failures in the fuel rod cladding can occur under regulatory transport conditions. These defects can cause the release of gas, volatiles, fuel particles or fragments into the package cavity and have to be considered properly in the safety analysis. Another issue is the transport of defective fuel rods. One concept is to use special canisters which can be handled like fuel assemblies. This concept requires additional assessment concerning drying, sealing and the mechanical and thermal design of such canisters. The package as a mechanical system is characterized by a complex set of interactions, e.g. between the fuel rods within the assembly as well as between the fuel assemblies, the basket, and the cask containment. This complexity together with the limited knowledge about the material properties and the variation of the fuel assemblies regarding cladding material, burn-up and the operation history makes an exact mechanical analysis of the fuel rods nearly impossible. The simplified approaches to consider conservatively spent fuel behavior currently accepted by BAM are presented here.
Mit GeoHyBe wurde ein neues Forum für die etwa 150 Vertreter der verschiedensten Berufszweige geschaffen, die eng mit dem Thema "Geothermische Anlagen unter hydrogeochemischen Aspekten der Betriebssicherheit" in Berührung stehen.
Insgesamt besteht der Beitrag zu Zielen des Forschungsschwerpunkts Geothermie somit in zwei Hauptergebnissen: in der Schaffung der oben genannten Plattform sowie im fachlichen Austausch über hydrogeochemische Probleme mit tiefen geothermischen Anlagen. Ferner wurden vor allem im Laufe der Podiumsdiskussion wünschenswerte Entwicklungen geäußert (Datenfreigabe bzw. Erleichterung des Zugangs zu relevanten Daten, Bedarf an weiterführenden oder vertiefenden Veranstaltungen etc.).
Die erreichten Ergebnisse haben das Potenzial, zu einer vereinfachten, besser angepassten Anlagenplanung und einer Verbesserung tiefengeothermischer Technologien und Materialien beizutragen. Dies führt zu einer erhöhten Betriebssicherheit und Energieausbeute geothermischer Anlagen, welche das klimapolitische Ziel der Erhöhung des Anteils regenerativer Energien am Gesamtenergieverbrauch und den Rückgang des CO₂-Ausstoßes unterstützen.
Als bedeutendstes wissenschaftlich-technisches Ergebnis des Workshops ist - neben dem Austausch von relevantem Fachwissen - sicherlich die Formulierung des gemeinsamen Verbesserungs- und Forschungsbedarfs hervorzuheben. Vor allem die Schwierigkeiten in der Beschaffung und im Austausch geothermisch relevanter Daten wurden betont. Daneben besteht bezüglich hydrogeochemischer und mikrobieller Prozesse unter den anspruchsvollen Bedingungen in der tiefen Geothermie offensichtlich noch ein großer Bedarf an Forschung und Entwicklung, um den Einsatz geeigneter Materialien und angepasster Technologien gewährleisten zu können.
Wesentliche Erfahrungen wurden vor allem bezüglich der Aktualität und des Diskussionsbedarfs zum Thema gemacht. GeoHyBe kann im Rückblick eher als Auftaktveranstaltung denn als abgeschlossenes Projekt betrachtet werden, da von vielen Seiten der Bedarf nach weiterführenden und/oder vertiefenden Veranstaltungen geäußert wurde.
Für den Transport flüssiger Gefahrguter im Luftverkehr werden unter anderem Kunststoffverpackungen verwendet, die Leckagen aufweisen oder Permeation unterliegen können. Aufgrund der vorhandenen Belüftungsbedingungen ist eine Ansammlung entzündlicher oder gesundheitsschädlicher Gase im Frachtraum von Flugzeugen denkbar. Die Überschreitung ausreichender Konzentrationen solcher Gase kann zu einer Gefährdung führen. Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Arbeit werden die Kabinenluftströmungen und der Stofftransport von Gefahrgut in Flugzeugfrachträumen mittels CFD untersucht. Zunächst erfolgt die Entwicklung eines geeigneten numerischen Modells auf der Grundlage eines generischen Frachtraums mit typischen Merkmalen.
Die verwendeten realitätsnahen Randbedingungen entsprechen aktuellen Flugzeugmustern. Das numerische Modell wird mittels experimenteller Modellversuche im Maßstab 1/10 validiert. Das Strömungsfeld im Frachtraummodell wird mittels eines LDA-Systems vermessen. Das validierte numerische Modell wird sowohl für Simulationen im Maßstab 1/10 als auch im Maßstab 1/1 verwendet. Anhand der drei Validierungskriterien Symmetrie, Verlaufe und Beträge der betrachteten Strömungsgrößen und einer LDA-Spektralanalyse wird insgesamt eine gute qualitative und quantitative Übereinstimmung zwischen Experiment und Simulation ermittelt. Eine systematische Untersuchung zeigt den Einfluss relevanter Parameter auf das Strömungsfeld und den Stofftransport. Zunächst werden die Einlassreynoldszahl und der Einlassturbulenzgrad sowie die Wandrauigkeit und Wandunebenheit bewertet. Für kleine Reynoldszahlen werden hohe Konzentrationen und für größere Reynoldszahlen werden deutlich geringeren Konzentrationen von Gefahrgut ermittelt. Anhand einer Variation in vier Schritten wird der Einfluss des Einlassmassenstromverhältnisses aus Luft und Gefahrgut bewertet. Erst für Werte von <1000 lasst sich ein signifikanter Einfluss feststellen. Es werden die Stoffe Toluol und n-Hexan beispielhaft für brennbare Gefahrgüter der Klasse 3 verwendet. Der Einfluss der Position und Gestalt verschiedener Einlassquellen wird an vier realitätsnahen Quellentypen bewertet.
Anhand vier verschiedener Transportszenarien wird die Ausbreitung von Gefahrgut im Modellmaßstab untersucht. Die Szenarien unterscheiden sich durch die Art der Belüftung und durch die Dauer des Gefahrgutaustritts. Szenarien mit aktiver Frachtraumbelüftung sind als eher unkritisch zu beurteilen. Die betrachteten Szenarien ohne aktive Frachtraumbelüftung sind als gefährlich einzustufen. Insbesondere das Szenario mit zeitlich unbegrenztem Gefahrgutmassenstrom erreicht kritische Konzentrationswerte und eine kritische Ausdehnung der Gefahrgutansammlung im Frachtraum. Diese Ergebnisse werden anhand zweier Szenarien im Maßstab 1/1 bestätigt. Die vorliegende Arbeit leistet einen Beitrag, das Verständnis der Strömungs- und Stofftransportvorgange im Flugzeugfrachtraum beim Transport von Gefahrgütern im Luftverkehr zu erweitern, um Risiken im Luftverkehr zu identifizieren. Die Allgemeingültigkeit und die Übertragbarkeit der Erkenntnisse auf Flugzeugmuster und Flugszenarien mit komplexeren Details sind zu prüfen.
In this thesis, an alternative approach to the well-known optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) technique is presented. A thorough analysis regarding distributed backscatter measurement in optical fibres is provided and its prospects for optical fibre sensing applications are demonstrated and discussed. The measurement approach is referred to as incoherent optical frequency domain reflectometry (I-OFDR): the frequency response of the fibre under test is measured and transferred into its time domain equivalent using inverse Fourier transform. This general technique has been studied and used for the measurement of nonlinear scattering effects in optical fibres. The requirements, limitations and prospects for general backscatter measurement, however, are different and have not been studied in detail prior to this work. Distributed sensing using Rayleigh scattering and reflective events in the fibre is first demonstrated using I-OFDR with remarkable measurement resolution. The incoherent detection technique allows for measuring singlemode fibres as well as multimode fibres. The first part of this work deals with the theoretical analysis and optimized implementation of the frequency domain approach. Necessary signal processing and its impact on the time domain response are presented. Sources of deviation from the linearity of the I-OFDR system are identified and an optimized laboratory setup is introduced; the crucial impact of the source coherence is thoroughly discussed. Suitable system parameters for the I-OFDR approach are defined: the system dynamic range and sensitivity are determined. A technique to suppress the dynamic range-limiting signal originating from strong reflections in the fibre is suggested. It is demonstrated that the I-OFDR technique has advantages over OTDR in terms of implementation for high-resolution measurement, measurement accuracy and signal stability. These advantages and measurement possibilities specific to the frequency domain approach are utilized for spatially resolved sensing applications in the second part of this work: A low optical loss polymer optical fibre (POF) is for the first time studied and analyzed for distributed strain sensing. The backscatter level dependence on strain in the fibre can be used to detect and locate strained fibre sections. Also, a correlation algorithm is proposed and demonstrated to measure length changes along the fibre with mm-resolution by correlating the typical backscatter signature of this fibre type. The fibre type is analyzed in detail regarding cross-sensitivities to temperature, relative humidity as well as mode propagation influences. The proposed sensing principles in combination with the highresolution I-OFDR allow for promising distributed sensing applications. Special interest is expressed by the structural health monitoring (SHM) sector since the fibre can measure strain values exceeding 100 %. Another sensing technique, specific to I-OFDR, is proposed for quasi-distributed and dynamic measurement of length changes and optical power changes at reflective events along the fibre. Precise calculation of the positions and reflected powers of multiple reflections can be conducted in parallel from the measurement of a few sampling points of the complex-valued frequency response. That allows for measuring with an increased repetition rate up to 2 kHz or at μm-scale length changes resolution at lower measurement frequencies. The approach is demonstrated in the laboratory and in a field application by measuring the deformation of a masonry building on a seismic shaking table. The I-OFDR exhibits competitive performance for general high-resolution backscatter measurement and the proposed optical fibre sensor principles may have promising prospects in the structural health monitoring (SHM) sector.
Die Zerstörungsfreie Prüfung (ZfP) ist ein wichtiges Werkzeug zur Qualitätssicherung sowie zur Überwachung sicherheitsrelevanter Bauteile. In der industriellen ZfP ist das Interesse an innovativen, kostengünstigen und sicherheitssteigernden ZfP-Methoden sehr groß. Die klassische Streuflussmethode ist die Magnetpulverprüfung, die sehr sensitiv auf Mikrorisse ist. Eine zuverlässige, automatische Prüfung ist hier aber nur bedingt und mit großem Aufwand zu erreichen. Die Lösung liegt im Einsatz von Magnetfeldsensoren, die zudem eine Bewertung der Defektgeometrie aufgrund der gemessenen Rissstreufelder ermöglicht. Insbesondere GMR-Sensoren (giant magneto resistance) eignen sich hierfür aufgrund ihrer kleinen Sensorelemente, welche eine hohe Ortsauflösung ermöglichen, und der sehr guten Feldempfindlichkeit. Jedoch sind kommerzielle GMR-Sensoren nicht an die Bedürfnisse der ZfP angepasst. Daher wurden während dieser Arbeit GMR-Sensoren dahingehend optimiert, dass sie für eine automatisierte Prüfung infrage kommen. Neben dem Design und der Charakterisierung der angepassten Sensoren wurden Messungen zur Detektionswahrscheinlichkeit durchgeführt. Um die Praxistauglichkeit zu untermauern, erfolgte ein quantitativer Vergleich mit alternativen ZfP- Oberflächenmethoden, der Wirbelstrom-, Magnetpulver- und Thermografieprüfung. Zusätzlich konnte der erfolgreiche Einsatz der GMR-Streuflussprüfung in einer industriellen, automatisierten Prüfeinrichtung unter Beweis gestellt werden.
