Monitoring von Mikroplastik
(2021)
Results from different methods applied to micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) analysis show that there are large gaps in harmonisation with respect to terminology, size classes, sample preparation protocols and, finally, to the comparability of the measurands and descriptors.
Within the European research cluster to understand the health impacts of micro- and nanoplastics (CUSP) working group WG3-Inter-Laboratory Comparisons an overview of the existing detection methods revealing advantages and disadvantages regarding the analytical tasks is being compiled. There is a clear need to develop high class characterized reference materials for MNPs in the size ranges of 100-10 µm and smaller than 10 µm, so that these can be used to validate methods and to make results comparable. Inter-laboratory comparisons (ILCs) on model samples with complex matrices regarding mass, or water samples for number-based methods, will help us to advance the process of harmonization as well as to train users early in process of developing new methods.
We plan to keep all five CUSP projects well-connected also with the 'outside' MNP projects and ILCs and to extract the optimum of needs, capabilities, and efforts in order to launch new VAMAS ILCs which should expand already available ones.
Niobium metal is the pure element with the highest superconducting critical temperature (T_c = 9.2 K), which is present in many applications. Particularly, in superconducting radio frequency (SRF) cavities of particle accelerators, the control of the surface characteristics of pure Nb is crucial, as the presence of defects may generate magnetic flux pinning that can increase by more than two orders of magnitude the surface critical current, ic. Several procedures such as chemical- or electro-polishing have been used aiming at cleaning surface contamination and decreasing its roughness. Sub-nanosecond lasers can be applied to generate a broad range of micro and nanostructures (e.g. Laser-Induced Periodic Surface Structures, LIPSS) that strongly modify the materials properties - as wettability, color, oxidation resistance or antibacterial behavior. In this work, we analyze a variety of surface structures generated on pure Nb sheets with different laser systems (UV, Vis and n-IR, fs and ps) by exploring a range of processing parameters. These include pulse overlap, irradiance or the effective number of pulses, under different atmospheres (air, N2, Ar, vacuum). The effects on Tc, critical currents and critical fields (Bc1, Bc2 and Bc3) have been obtained from magnetization, ac susceptibility and heat capacity measurements, revealing their dependence with the different surface nanostructures and the chemical changes generated with these laser treatments.
Mathematical analysis of the bulging effect in high power laser beam welding of thick steel sheets
(2021)
The present work is devoted to the mathematical analysis of the bulging effect in high-power laser beam welding of thick steel sheets. The numerical results are based upon experimental results from previous studies, revealing the relationships between the bulging effect, the hot cracking formation, and the distribution of alloying elements in the weld pool. The widening of the molten pool in its middle area is observed for both complete and partial penetration welding of 8 mm - 15 mm thick structural steel sheets. The weld pool shape is extracted from the simulations to evaluate the extent of the necking and bulging of the solidification isotherm and their influence on the hot cracking formation and the mixing behavior of the weld pool. Relying on an earlier numerical study utilizing a fixed keyhole, simulation models considering a dynamic keyhole are developed thereto. The link between the bulge and the studied phenomena is found to be significant.

The presentation shows systematic investigations to describe the corrosion and corrosion product formation processes of pure zinc under the climatic conditions currently prevailing in the Federal Republic of Germany. The investigations in their entirety aim at questioning current and establishing new ways of looking at the formation of corrosion products of pure zinc under atmospheric corrosion conditions. Thus, they make a significant contribution in understanding corrosion protection by zinc and zinc coatings. In particular, the focus is placed on the initial stage of the corrosion product formation. A systematic investigation of this time range, which is characterized by very reactive corrosion products, is only made possible by using gel-type electrolytes. The short periods of time at the beginning of weathering is now measurable and their influence on the formation of corrosion products and the kinetics of layer formation describable. By combining the new electrochemical approach with gravimetric, microscopic and analytical methods, new insights could be gained both on a methodic and scientific level.

Typically, the near-eutectic Al-Si alloys consist of highly interconnected three-dimensional network of the eutectic Silicon (Si) and intermetallics embedded into Aluminium (Al) matrix. For further improvement of the mechanical properties of such alloys, often, one single ceramic reinforcement phase, e.g. silicon carbide (SiC) or aluminium oxide (Al2O3) in the form of fibres or particles is added. However, hybrid reinforcements (fibres and particles) can further improve wear resistance and fracture toughness, and additionally, reduce anisotropy of the material. The engineering of metal matrix composites (MMC) for specific application requirements benefits from a comprehensive knowledge of the failure behaviour. Therefore, damage evolution under compression was investigated on:
- pure near-eutectic AlSi12CuMgNi matrix alloy
- type I: matrix reinforced with random-planar oriented Al2O3 short fibres (15 vol.%)
- type II: matrix reinforced with random-planar oriented Al2O3 short fibres (7 vol.%) and additional SiC particles (15 vol.%)
The analysis of damage mechanism was carried out in two rather independent but complementary studies. First, selected sister samples of every material were exposed to quasi-static compression (traverse control). The compression tests were interrupted at different strain levels. Miniature cylinders with a diameter of 1mm were extracted from the pre-strained samples and investigated by synchrotron computed tomography (SX-µCT) with a spatial resolution of about 0.7 µm. For the pure matrix alloy, microcracks are confined to the intermetallic particles and to the eutectic Si, hence no damage was observed in the Aluminium. The composite type II revealed a more effective strain accumulation (less damage) than type I at low plastic strain (up to 5 %), but a more catastrophic damage development due to cracking of the SiC clusters at higher strain levels.
The second approach to study the damage initiation and accumulation in the materials subjected to compressive load was Acoustic Emission (AE) analysis. In this case the in-situ monitoring of the acoustic emission signal was performed during compression tests on specimens with dimension of several mm. For all three material types, AE activity set at 2% strain. Differences in AE behaviour of the three materials was proven based on AE hitrate, signal peak amplitudes as well as weighted peak frequencies (WPF). Future work focuses on combination of AE and SX-µCT aiming for more detailed knowledge on damage mechanism of metal matrix composites.
Solidification cracking is still a particular problem in laser beam welding, especially in the welding of thick-walled plates. In this study, the influence of weld pool geometry on solidification cracking in partial penetration welding of thick plates is a subject of discussion. For this purpose, a special experimental setup of steel and quartz glass in butt configuration and lateral with high speed camera was used to capture the weld pool shape. Additionally, laser beam welding experiments were carried out to compare the crack positions and the cross section with the high-speed camera observations. The results showed a bulge in the weld pool root separated from the upper region by a nick area. This leads to the fact that three different longitudinal lengths with different solidification areas are taking place. This temporal sequence of solidification strongly promotes the solidification cracks in the weld root.

Proposal for revision of en 15870 „Adhesives determination of tensile strength of butt joints”
(2021)
The paper addresses the PROPOSAL FOR REVISION OF EN 15870
„ADHESIVES -DETERMINATION OF TENSILE STRENGTH OF BUTT JOINTS” “ and the follow points are discussed in more detail: Adhesives-Determination of tensile strength of butt joints, Introduction of Centrifugal Adhesion Testing, Comparison of Testing Methods.
The sustainable and resource-efficient production of wind energy plants requires the use of modern high-strength fine-grain structural steels. This applies to both foundation and erection structures. During the assembly of steel structures, unacceptable defects can occasionally be found in the weld area. In most cases, the economical solution would be local thermal gouging of the affected areas and re-welding. Due to the high shrinkage restraint of the joint groove in the overall structure, the superposition of design and welding-induced residual stress can lead to crack formation and ultimately to component failure, particularly in interaction with the degradation of the microstructure and mechanical properties high-strength steels during the repair process.
In this context, component-related investigations (FOSTA-P1311/IGF-Nr. 20162 N) focusing on welding residual stress evolution during local thermal gouging and rewelding of S500MLO and S960QL are carried out using in-situ digital image correlation (DIC) and ex-situ X-ray diffraction methods (XRD). Therefore, self-restrained specimens were systematically gouged and rewelded with defined welding heat control (heat input, working temperature) and parameters. By means of structural mechanics calculations, geometries of self-restrained specimens were identified, that represent defined rigidity conditions of repair welds of real components. It could be shown that with increasing restraint intensity significantly higher residual stresses occur in the weld metal and heat affected zone. Furthermore, it revealed that the transverse stresses along the weld seam decrease at the weld seam ends leading to different stress state during gouging and welding. XRD analysis of the local residual stresses after cooling to RT longitudinal and transverse to the weld direction showed a good comparability with global DIC analyses.

The sustainable and resource-efficient production of offshore wind turbines requires the use of modern high-strength fine-grained structural steels (Martin and Schroeter, 2005). This applies to wind turbines in terms of increasing turbine sizes as well as to maintenance and installation vessels and equipment (Ummenhofer et al., 2013). Without the demanded high load-bearing capacities and boom lengths, the economic realization of these goals would be inconceivable. During the assembly of high-strength steel structures, unacceptable defects can occasionally be found in the weld area, although the welding process was executed in accordance with the specifications. In most cases, the economical solution would be local thermal gouging of the affected areas and re-welding. Corresponding standards hardly provide any information on adequate repair concepts, and there is no uniform scientific data on which to base such concepts. This applies particularly to the consideration and optimization of welding-induced stresses due to the high shrinkage hindrance of the gouging grooves and degradation of the adjacent microstructures by gouging and re-welding. The result, especially in the case of high-strength steel grades, are frequently recurring imperfections as well as a missing consideration of the additionally induced welding stresses in the design of the structure. In this context, at BAM component-relevant investigations focused on welding residual stress evolution and microstructural degradation during repair of weld joints due to local thermal gouging and re-welding are carried out within the scope of a FOSTA project (P1311, IGF 20162N).
In this study, several relevant findings are discussed based on examples of structural engineering focusing on mechanical-technological properties and residual stresses, for instance found by (Schasse, 2017). Also experimental and numerical work as conducted by (Wongpanya, 2008) and weld tests under defined shrinkage restraint in special weld test-setups for research projects, e. g. FOSTA-P922 (Kannengiesser and Schroepfer, 2015) and P1011 (Kannengiesser and Schroepfer, 2017) have shown that an optimization of the welding-induced stresses of high-strength structural steels is specifically achievable by means of adapted heat control concepts (Schroepfer, 2017). The present research involves systematic investigations of influences of shrinkage restraint, the number of repair cycles and heat control during repair welding of the relatively new developed offshore-relevant high-strength steel S500MLO (EN 10225-1). For the quantification of the shrinkage restraint of weld joints, the concept of restraint intensity established by (Satho et al., 1973) was applied analogous to recent research, e. g. (Schwenk et al., 2008). By means of structural mechanics calculations, geometries of self-strained specimens were identified, that represent different defined rigidity conditions of repair welds of real components, cf. Fig. 1. It could be shown that with increasing weld joint restraint intensity significantly higher residual stresses in the weld metal and heat affected zone up to 80 % of the nominal yield strength occur, cf. Fig. 2. In relation to existing results, it has been shown that a safe repair of such welds can only be achieved by means of appropriate repair concepts and heat control taking the high welding stresses and special microstructures of high-strength steels into account.
Finally, the aim of this research is to derive recommendations for repair concepts appropriate to the stresses and materials involved providing a basis for standards and guidelines, especially for SMEs, in order to avoid damage and, in most cases, expensive reworking and to improve the full utilization of the potential of high-strength steels.

The present research involves systematic investigations of influences of shrinkage restraint, the number of repair cycles and heat control during repair welding of a recently available high-strength offshore steel S500MLO (EN 10225-1). A quantification of the shrinkage restraint of repair weld joints is achievable by means of restraint intensity concept [4], analogous to previous studies [5]. Using structural mechanics calculations, geometries of self-restrained specimens are identified representing different defined rigidity conditions of repair welds considering actual high-strength steel components. Welding experiments with DIC analyses (digital image correlation) of the occurring strains during welding and XRD analyses (X-ray diffraction) of the resulting residual stresses after welding and cooling show increasing transient loads and significantly elevated residual stress profiles in the weld area with increasing restraint intensity. Especially in the heat affected zone, tensile residual stresses of up to 80 % of the nominal yield strength occur when welding under increased restraint conditions. In relation to the presented existing results, this indicates that a safe repair welding is primarily achievable by means of appropriate repair concepts and heat control taking into account the high welding stresses and special microstructures of high-strength steels. Determination of residual stress evolution during repair welding of high-strength steel components

Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF), as one of the most promising production process in the field of metal additive manufacturing, enables traditional constructive solutions to be rethought and the manufacturing of optimized components according to the "form follows function" principle. The most significant obstacle for a broad industrial application of the L-PBF process is the inadequate quality assurance during the manufacturing process so far, leading to high production costs. Although several mainly camera based commercial in-process monitoring systems are already available, a deep understanding of the interpretation of the monitored data and correlation with actual defects is still lacking. One reason for this is the reduction of the complex process signature to just one measurement value.
The focus of this contribution is the presentation of the multispectral optical tomography as alternative to single measurand in-situ monitoring systems. The potential of this approach is hereby shown on L-PBF printed samples with induced process instabilities. Beyond that, an in-house developed L-PBF printer for further testing of multi-sensor in-situ monitoring systems is presented.
Different types of laser-generated surface structures, i.e., Laser-induced Periodic Surface Structures (LIPSS, ripples), Grooves, and Spikes are generated on titanium and Ti6Al4V surfaces by means of femtosecond (fs) laser scan processing (790 nm, 30 fs, 1 kHz) in ambient air. Morphological, chemical and structural properties of the different surface structures are characterized by various surface analytical techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GD-OES), and depth-profiling Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). It is revealed that the formation of near-wavelength sized LIPSS is accompanied by the formation of a graded oxide extending several tens to a few hundreds of nanometers into depth. GD-OES performed on other superficial fs-laser generated structures produced at higher fluences and effective number of pulses per spot area such as periodic Grooves and irregular Spikes indicate even thicker graded oxide layers. These graded layers may be suitable for applications in prosthetics or tribology.
The role of electromagnetic scattering in the formation of laser-induced periodic surface structures
(2021)
Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) are a universal phenomenon that is accompanying laser materials processing. These surface nanostructures pave a simple way for surface functionalization with numerous applications in optics, fluidics, tribology, medicine, etc. During the last decade remarkable experimental and theoretical improvements in understanding of their formation mechanisms were obtained - all pointing toward polarization-dependent energy deposition by absorption of optical radiation that is scattered at the surface roughness and interfering with the laser beam. This contribution reviews the current state-of-the-art on the role of electromagnetic scattering in the formation of LIPSS by ultrashort laser pulses. Special attention is drawn to recent finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) calculations that allow to visualize the radiation patterns formed in the vicinity of the sample surface and to the impact of a thin superficial laser-induced oxidation layer.
The following work deals with the quantitative fracture surface evaluation in damage analysis. So far, fracture surfaces have almost exclusively been evaluated qualitatively, i.e. the presence of fracture features is documented and their surface proportions are estimated, if necessary. Many years of experience are required, as well as an intensive comparison with defined comparative images from the literature. The aim of this work is the development of classifiers which can recognize fracture mechanisms or fracture features in scanning electron microscope images (SEM). The basis is 46 SEM images, which have been evaluated by fractography experts with regard to fracture features. The existing data set of images is expanded using augmentation methods in order to increase the variability of the data and counteract overfitting. Only convolutional neural networks (CNN) are used to create the classifiers. Various network configurations are tested, with the SegNet achieving the best results.
In 1981 the OECD published the Test Guideline on Particle size and size distribution. This TG is still a valid document for the measurement of particles all over the world.
When nanomaterials gained importance, ISO set up a technical commitee for Nanotechnologies in 2005 and the OECD followed this step in 2006 with the Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials.
In the following years ISO and OECD published several documents about nanomaterials and the systematisation developed.
In 2017 it was finally clear that nanomaterials need to be adressed in another way than chemicals and in 2020 ECHA revised the REACH-Annexes accordingly and included nanomaterials.
Unfortunately there is a little problem with this: Only a few applicable test guidelines exit for the measurement of the nanomaterials. Several test guidelines date from 1981 and do not address nanomaterials.
The logical next step for the OECD would be to publish a series of test guidelines which are indeed currently prepared and will be shown in this talk.
Finally there is an additional need for the future of NM standardisation: Digitalisation.

Thermoelectric generators can be used as energy harvesters for sensor applications. Multilayer thermoelectric generators (ML-TEGs) are a promising alternative to conventional π-type generators due to their high filling factor, high capability of automated production and the texturing potential during the production process. Calcium cobaltite is a promising thermoelectric oxide (p-type) with highly anisotropic properties. The following study shows the development of a textured unileg ML-TEG using ceramic multilayer technology.
Tape-casting and pressure assisted sintering are applied to fabricate textured calcium cobaltite. Compared to conventional sintering, pressure assisted sintering increases the strength by the factor 10. Thermoelectric properties can be tuned either towards maximum power factor or towards maximum figure of merit depending on the pressure level.
As electrical insulation material, a screen-printable glass-ceramic with high resistivity and adapted coefficient of thermal expansion is developed. From various commercial pastes a metallization with low contact resistance is chosen. The unileg ML-TEG is co-fired in one single step. The demonstrators reach 80% of the simulated output power and the power output is highly reproducible between the different demonstrators (99%). These results provide the first proof-of-concept for fabricating co-fired multilayer generators based on textured calcium cobaltite with high power factor, high density, and high strength.
Thermoelectric generators can be used for energy harvesting by directly transforming a temperature gradient into a voltage. Multilayer generators based on low-temperature co-fired ceramics technology (LTCC) are an interesting alternative to conventional π-type generators. They exhibit several advantages like high filling factor, possibility of texturing, co-firing of all materials in one single-step, and reduction of production costs due to the high possible degree of automation. Pressure-assisted sintering enables the theoretical possibility of co-firing two promising oxide thermoelectric materials: Ca3Co4O9 (p-type) and CaMnO3 (n-type). Due to the large difference in sintering temperature (300 K) the process is very challenging.
In this work we show the material development of Ca3Co4O9, CaMnO3, insulation and metallization for multilayer generators co-fired under pressure at 900 °C. The materials are tailored regarding their sintering behavior, electrical performance and coefficients of thermal expansion. Different generator designs (unileg and pn-type) were fabricated and analyzed regarding crack formation, interaction layers and thermoelectric performance. Simulated stresses during cooling in the multilayers are compared with actual crack formation for different sintering conditions. This study shows that a lower pressure level and a lower level of complexity are beneficial for co-firing and performance.
Texturing of calcium cobaltite for thermoelectric applications by pressure assisted sintering
(2021)
Thermoelectric materials can convert waste heat directly into electrical power by using the Seebeck effect. Calcium cobaltite (CCO) is considered as a promising thermoelectric p-type oxide for energy harvesting applications at temperatures above 500 °C. The properties and morphology of single-crystal CCO are strongly anisotropic because of its crystal structure of alternating layers of CoO2 and Ca2CoO3. By aligning the plate-like grains, the anisotropic properties of the grains can be assigned to the poly-crystalline parts.
In this study, the combination of tape casting and pressure-assisted sintering is used to texture and densify large scale components (50 cm²). Thereby, the influence of powder preparation and applied pressure during sintering on texturing and thermoelectric properties is investigated.
The analysis of XRD pole figures revealed that tape casting already leads to highly textured CCO. By pressure variation during sintering, the microstructure of CCO can be tailored either toward maximum power factor as required for energy harvesting or toward maximum figure of merit as required for energy recovery. Low pressure lead to a porous microstructure and maximum figure of merit and higher pressure to full densification and maximum power factor. The electrical and thermal conductivity of CCO seem depending on both texture and sinter density.
The contact between train wheels and rail tracks is known to induce material degradation in the form of wear, and rolling contact fatigue in the railhead. Rails with a pearlitic microstructure have proven to provide the best wear resistance under severe wheel-rail interaction in heavy haul applications. High speed laser cladding, a state-of-the-art surface engineering technique, is a promising solution to repair damaged railheads. However, without appropriate preheating or processing strategies, the utilized steel grades lead to martensite formation and cracking during deposition welding.
In this study, laser cladding of low-alloy steel at very high speeds was investigated, without preheating the railheads. Process speeds of up to 27 m/min and laser power of 2 kW are used. The clad, heat affected zone and base material are examined for cracks and martensite formation by hardness tests and metallographic inspections. A methodology for process optimization is presented and the specimens are characterized for suitability. Within the resulting narrow HAZ, the hardness could be significantly reduced.
