Dark-field Transmission electron microscopy (DFTEM) results were obtained and presented. The results are discussed with regard to additional microstructural characterisation of the primyra Phase and creep experiments of alloy 2618A. Different methods to determine the volume fractions of precipitate phases are presented.
The LEK94 is a Ni-base superalloy single crystal (SX) of the second generation, a materials class which is important for its high temperature creep resistance (>1000°C) in first stage blades of low-to-medium pressure gas turbines. Monocrystalline Ni-base superalloy SXs have a two-phase microstructure consisting of small cubes (' phase with the ordered L12 crystal structure, cube edge length: 500 nm), separated by thin channels (γ phase with fcc solid solution structure, channel width: 20 nm). The microstructural evolution during high temperature and low stress tensile creep has been thoroughly investigated previously, mainly for [001] loading, both in terms of dislocation activity (filling of γ channels, formation of dislocation networks, cutting of the γ’ phase) as well as phase coarsening (rafting, topological inversion). Other loading geometries have received less attention.
The present work studies high temperature and low stress creep deformation of the superalloy LEK 94 at temperatures around 1000°C, where rafting occurs. Differences between loading under different uniaxial, biaxial and triaxial stress states are discussed. Stereo-microscopy and g∙b analysis in the scanning transmission electron microscopy mode (STEM) are combined for microstructural analysis. The focus is set on the role of dislocation interactions with the aging microstructure. Both development in STEM characterization methods, as well as the roles of phase coarsening, γ channel filling, microstructural heterogeneity and γ’ phase cutting are discussed.
Complex materials (e.g., porous ceramics) need high resolution techniques at multi-scale levels. Microstructure is intimately linked to properties and performance. One technique (or even a few techniques) is not enough. X-ray refraction and CT are very powerful tools. Non-destructive characterisation and quantitative image analysis techniques (2D and 3D) are necessary to understand the anisotropy.
Several restoration projects of stained-glass windows have been performed in Lower Silesia (Poland) since 2010. The aim of the projects was to protect stained-glass windows against environmental impact of industial pollutants and acid rain by installing a protective glazing. The usefulness of protective glazing has been proved by climate measurements and determination of environmental impact before and after installation.
The presentation shows how the three-dimensional quantification of dislocations and their characteristic features, e.g. Burgers vector, line direction, dislocation density, is carried out at the transmission electron microscope in scanning mode (STEM) at Division 5.1 at BAM. Exemplarily, the methods are shown for Ni-base superalloy single crystals, for which a short introduction is given using further TEM techniques. Additional examples on low angle grain boundaries, nucleation of oxides at dislocations and interaction of dislocations and carbides are shown.
The content of the presentation was addapted, aiming at scientists who work within the DFG Priority Programme 1713 "Strong coupling of thermo-chemical and thermo-mechanical states in applied materials".
In Germany the damages on concrete motorways have increased during the past 15 years. This led often to a reduction of service life from 30 to 10 years. In spite of comprehensive research the reasons for these damages have not been clarified yet. But it is known that in this context the ASR plays a decisive role. Against this background ASR performance tests have been developed. However, these tests do not take into account the effects of mechanical loading due to cyclic traffic and climatic impact. Therefore in Germany the ASR research group 1498 was founded. The research group consists of three experimentally- and two multi-scale modelling oriented subprojects, which are working closely together. Selected findings of BAM’s experimental subproject SP4 are content of this contribution. The aim was to investigate the impact of a cyclic mechanical pre-damage on moisture transport. The pre-damaging was carried out on large-format beams using a cyclic four point bending test with a total number of 5 million load cycles. Thereby the damage process was monitored by using different NDT-techniques. After the mechanical pre-damaging, smallsized specimens were taken from loaded as well as unloaded areas of the large format beams. Absorption tests were carried out on these specimens using water and NaCl solution. Thereby moisture distribution was measured with Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR). Additionally, moisture suction was quantified integrally by means of gravimetric measurements. The analysis of the first test data shows that the mechanical loading influences the moisture transport.
The concrete prism test at 60°C facilitates accelerated testing of alkali-silica reactivity of aggregates within five months. Manual measurement is usually conducted to determine expansion of test specimen every 28 days. This conventional procedure gives only limited insight to expansion behaviour of ASR-affected prisms. Due to the large time intervals, expansion exceeding the critical value of 0.3 mm/m is likely to be noticed late. Continuous recording applied in this work resolves this problem and delivers beneficial information on the shape of the expansion curve.
Different types of aggregate have been tested applying continuous and manual measurement to the concrete specimens.
Models of ASR-induced expansion, available in the open literature, so far are validated with discontinuous data hardly tracing the modelled curve. Continuous measurement improves validation and further model development.
The martensitic steels X30CrMoN15-1 and 100Cr6 did not show any hydrogen enhanced wear in sliding friction tests against alumina balls in hydrogen gas environment. However, depending on the purity of the environment, unexpected high wear occurred at the alumina ball. The results of a tests series with a broad variation of test parameters are presented.
The novel heat treatment concept, “quenching and partitioning” (Q&P) has been developed for high strength steels with enhanced formability. This heat treatment involves quenching of austenite to a temperature between martensite start and finish, to receive a several amount of retained austenite. During the subsequent annealing treatment, the so called partitioning, the retained austenite is stabilized due to carbon diffusion, which results in enhanced formability and strength regarding strain induced austenite to martensite transformation. In this study a Q&P heat treatment was applied to a Fe-0.45C-0.65Mn-0.34Si-13.95Cr stainless martensite. Thereby the initial quench end temperature and the partitioning time were varied to characterize their influence on microstructural evolution. The microstructural changes were analysed by dilatometer measurements, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, including electron back-scatter diffraction. Compression testing was made to examine the mechanical behaviour. It was found that an increasing partitioning time up to 30 min leads to an enhanced formability without loss in strength due to a higher amount of stabilized retained and reversed austenite as well as precipitation hardening.
The corrosion resistance of martensitic stainless steels (MSS) depends strongly on the chemical composition and the applied heat treatment. Both determine the distribution of the alloying elements in the microstructure and the resulting material properties. The addition of nitrogen is known to be beneficial for the pitting corrosion resistance of stainless steels. In case of MSS this effect is not only connected to nitro-gen itself because nitrogen can be used to substitute carbon which also influences the result of the heat treatment process. This paper shows the effect of nitrogen on the corrosion resistance in relation to the hardening process of MSS. Therefore the effects of austenitization temperature and cooling rate on microstructure, hardness and corrosion resistance were studied on the MSS X30CrMoN15 1 and X50CrMoV15. The effect of different cooling rates was studied using the jominy end quench test. The changes in corrosion resistance were detected with electrochemical potentiodynamic reactivation (EPR) and by the determination of critical pitting potentials. Besides this experimental approach thermodynamic calculations with the software thermocalc will be presented and used for the interpretation of the effect of nitrogen on the corrosion resistance of MSS.
Hydrogen can have an extreme degradation effects in steels, particularly concerning the mechanical properties. These effects can lead to hydrogen assisted cracking in micro-alloyed high strength steels during fabrication and/or operation in industrial applications. The Carrier Gas Hot Extraction method, which functionally combines a mass spectrometer with a Thermal Desorption Analysis process, was used for the detection of ultra-low diffusible hydrogen concentrations in the material specimens. The work shows the interaction between hydrogen and lattice defects in different micro-alloyed materials and HAZ. These steels were prepared in a quenched and tempered condition and in a thermo-mechanically rolled condition. The trapping characteristics of two steel grades, S690QL and S700MC, were studied with respect to the activation energy dependent on carbon content and micro-alloying elements such as Ti, Nb, Mo, Cr and V. The two steel grades exhibited several types of traps: carbide formations, dislocations and/or grain boundaries were common, which can influence activation energy and hydrogen solubility. The type and dimension of inclusions or particles also affected the hydrogen trapping behavior. A decrease of carbon and specific alloying elements in MC steels led to a change in the activation energy binding the trapped hydrogen. This thermo-mechanically hot
rolled steel revealed an increased interaction between hydrogen
and precipitations. The higher carbon content in the
quenched and tempered steel led to a higher interaction
between hydrogen and iron carbide, specifically in the
martensitic phase. Furthermore, the trapping behavior in HAZ showed a significant increase in activation energy, especially in the coarse grained microstructure.
Three high strength Nb-, Ti- and Ti+V- bearing S690QL steels were welded to investigate and compare the effects of microalloy addition on HAZ toughness. Charpy V notch impact tests from three microalloyed welds under different cooling rates have been performed. Fractographic examination shows that several factors including large-sized grain, upper bainite or hard second phase, interact to determine the brittle fracture mode and impaired toughness of Nb bearing weld at high heat input. In contrast to this reduced toughness, Ti bearing welds exhibits satisfied toughness regardless of at a fast or slow cooling rate as a result of limited austenite grain and refined favourable intragranular acicular ferrite structure. Moreover, in the case of such refined structure as matrix, TiN particles are found to be irrelevant to the fracture process and crystallographic misorientation results also confirms that high angle boundaries between fine ferrites plates provide much effective barrier for crack propagation and contribute to improved toughness.
Wood borers in structural timber - European regulations for their control and can TTIP comply?
(2016)
The control of wood boring beetles in structural timber is uniformly regulated in the European Union. Registration and authorization of wood preservatives for the European market has to follow a regulated procedure as described under the Biocidal Product Directive “EU 528/2012”. Non-biocidal measures of control such as by physical means are regulated individually by each member state on the national level. The Biocidal Product Directive demands voluminous data sets for product identity, environmental and health risk assessments, proof of efficacy, and management strategies to avoid the development of resistance, just to name the most important.
With TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership) on the horizon, it must be expected that wood preservatives coming from the North American Market to Europe and vice versa will mutually be recognized in the future, despite existing differences in registration requirements. The presentation will focus on major differences in standard efficacy tests for wood preservatives with claims for beetle control, which, next to others, have to be passed before product placement on the respective market. Desirable needs for future harmonizing will be identified in order to overcome consumers distrust on each side of the partners.

A significant number of German concrete motorway pavements have shown damage only a few years after construction. The alkali-silica-reaction (ASR) is often one of the reasons for this damage. German guidelines and regulations focus on the optimisation of the concrete composition to avoid damage due to ASR. Moreover, diverse research projects have dealt with the development and optimisation of ASR performance test methods with and without external alkali supply.
However, the influence of other parameters on the occurrence and intensity of a damaging ASR had not yet been taken into account. Such parameters include, e.g., insufficient curing and the modifications of concrete’s porosity due to the use of slip form pavers. Likewise, the increased traffic loading had not yet been considered. The Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) assesses these parameters and processes in a number of projects. These projects aim primarily to increase the durability of the concrete pavements, in particular by improving preventive measures that may be taken before or after the construction of concrete pavements. This paper gives a short overview of BAM’s projects concerning ASR in concrete pavements. Furthermore, results regarding the influence of the cyclic traffic loading on ASR are presented.
The paper presents a comparison between two different numerical modelling approaches aimed to simulate the in-plain behaviour of rammed earth walls, namely under axial, diagonal and cyclic shearcompression loading. In the first part of the study the mechanical characterisation of wallets tested under uniaxial compression and diagonal compression and walls tested under in-plane cyclic shear-compression loading is presented. The results were used to implement and validate the finite element simulations. The numerical modelling of the rammed earth samples tested is then discussed in the second part. A non-linear constitutive law based on the total strain rotating crack model (TSRCM) was employed as implemented in the DIANA® software [1]. The aim of the numerical analyses presented here is to simulate the behaviour of rammed earth under different inplane loading conditions. For the wallets, tests under static loading both macro- and micro-modelling approaches were considered for the simulation of the experimental tests. For the walls subjected to cyclic loading only the micro-modelling approach was applied for the simulation of the experimental tests. The respective FEM model was calibrated with the experimental results. The rammed earth layers were represented by continuum elements, the contact surfaces between layers by interface elements. This approach allowed assessing the influence of the apparent weakness of the interfaces between layers on the shear behaviour of rammed earth. The goal of the numerical simulation of the cyclic tests was to establish the adequacy of common analytical methods (e. g. used for masonry) applied to the analysis of rammed earth. Rammed earth exhibits brittle characteristics similar to masonry materials and is used in geometrical typologies, such as walls, common in masonry construction.
The repair of earthen structures is not an easy task. Earth as a construction material has comparatively weak mechanical properties. It is also susceptible towards liquid water, were it can lose cohesion very quickly if certain moisture contents are exceeded. Repair concepts of structures built with such materials are therefore challenging. Historical earthen structures often exhibit damages in form of extensive cracking, which may have been caused by static or dynamic loads. Frequently these cracks are insufficiently or inappropriately repaired because of lack of knowledge and / or technology. In particular, the behaviour of crack repair by grouting poses a challenge in earthen materials and demands specific requirements for the grouting mortar, such as low water content, good water retention, low shrinkage. Grouting materials require additional specifications such as compatible strengths and Young’s modulus as well as good adhesion to the earthen substrates. In addition, grouts have to be sufficiently flowable to fill small cracks and voids without segregation or bleeding. Therefore, the rheological behaviour has to be well understood and controlled to gain the desired effects. The repair of cracks in earthen buildings is traditionally done by stuffing manually mortar into the gap. Naturally, this method is only usable for cracks with large widths. Another disadvantage is that cracks going through thicker walls cannot be completely reached by the tools used for stuffing the mortar into the crack. Lime based grouts for earthen materials were usually used for re-attachment of plasters but less for structural reasons.Due to the nature of earthen materials grouts based on formulated or hydraulic lime (according to the definition in EN 459-1) have to meet considerable demands on a variety of properties, which are related to compatibility, durability and in particular to the ability of being injected. The goal of this study was to create a grout, which can be used to re-establish structural continuity in cracked earthen masonry or other massive earth walls (rammed earth and cob) with the focus on grouting cracks. The grout material was based on hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide) with additions of pozzolana and lime stone filler.
Starting out from Flory`s most probable Distribution concept, correct and incorrect evaluations of SEC measurements are discussed. Using the correct mode, polyesters prepared by irreversible and reversible polycondensation methods were studied. Polyesters of α,ω−alkanediols and isophthalic acid or polyesters of diphenols and sebacic acid were prepared by three different irreversible polyconcensation methods. Formation of cyclic oligo and polyesters was monitored by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and dispersities were measured by SEC. The results are compared with the theories of Flory and Odian.
Eqilibrated polyesters were prepared by reversible polycondensation of ethyl 6-hydroxycaproate or by alcohol-initiated ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone. Various catalysts were compared. The influence of dilution and of di- or multifunctional initiators was evaluated. Furthermore, equilibrated polylactides were prepared from L- or meso-lactide at 120, 160 and 180°C. A fast even-odd equilibration was discovered in addition to reversible cyclization and intermolecular transesterification. The influence of these different equilibration mechanisms on the dispersity was investigated. The preparative and theoretical consequences are discussed.
In-plane shear behaviour of earthen materials panels strengthened with polyester fabric strips
(2016)
An experimental investigation was carried out to study the in-plane shear behaviour of earthen material panels strengthened with polyester fabric strips. Strengthened panels were developed to exploit the strength potential of earthen materials and to solve its lack of tensile strength, significantly improving not only strength but also ductility. Three earthen materials were considered: cob, earth block masonry (EBM) and rammed earth (RE). As first approach the strengthening configuration, based on different adhesive materials, was tested only for cob panels. As part of the study the results of a big testing campaign of unstrengthened Panels were considered. Seven strengthened panels were tested in diagonal compression/shear.A unique reinforcement orientation was used. The results of these tests are presented in this paper, and include the load-displacement behaviours, crack patterns, failure modes. The results showed that the reinforcement was the most effective in EBM panels, with increase in strength and ductility observed. In RE and cob panels the reinforcement did not likely contribute significantly to the shear resistance, due to a lack of embedment length of the strips. Instead, in EBM it was likely that the vertical reinforcement acted in tension to restrain shear induced dilation and to restrain sliding.
Nondestructive investigation of the VHCF-endurance on cyclically loaded CFRP by X-Ray-Refractography
(2016)
Carbon fiber-reinforced-plastics (CFRP) are already used under high-cycle- (HCF) and very-high-cycle-fatigue (VHCF) at relatively low loads not only in aerospace industry, but also in other growing markets like especially wind energy and increasingly also automotive industry. While the static strength of CFRP is satisfyingly predictable by means of layerwise-strenght-analysis and material data from single layers, it is more and more uncertain to predict residual strength or lifetime as the design lifetime increases. Previous studies showed that local minor cracks and inter-fiber-fracture (IFF) originate long before total failure of single layers. Reliable fatigue estimation for fiber-reinforced-plastics is not available at present. Subsequently safety-related primary structures made out of FRP are over dimensioned.
It is possible to detect the change of inner surface in a specimen by means of X-Ray-Refractography. This includes voids, intact fiber-matrix-interfaces as well as defective ones, cracks and all interfaces in plane with the X-Ray-beam. As the crack-density (including IFF) increases, the inner surface of the material correspondingly increases.
The borderline where even at high cycles no early cracks were detected was identified for selected laminates out of woven and non-crimped fabric with epoxy-matrix.
When no micro-cracks were detected up to 106 cycles, the specimens also lasted in the VHCF-regime. Furthermore for the epoxy resin LY556 in combination with carbon fiber it was distinguished that at a load minor to 50% IFF-load level, no micro cracks were detected and consequently the VHCF-endurance reached.
The integration of the set-up small-sized testing machine into the X-Ray buildup in order to achieve in-situ non-destructive detection of the crack initiation while loading the specimens (CFRP and GFRP- woven fabric and non-crimped-fabric) at the same time will increase the performance of the studies.
In earlier investigations at BAM it was shown, that the matrix has a strong influence on the micro-crack formation and finally on the total lifetime. In order to determine the influence of the matrix properties on the boarderline to infinite life, research is done on laminates while replacing the epoxy-based matrix with an equivalent one with different fracture mechanical properties.
With the evolution of early cracks and IFF monitored as well as the influence of the matrix on the crack propagation investigated we are working on an appropriate model to improve lifetime prediction in CFRP. This work is done within the priority program “infinite life” (SPP 1466) funded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).

The field of human factors has been concerned with prevention of organisational accidents and the maintaining of the highest safety standards in organisations with high hazard potential since its beginnings. Whereas it is known that human error has contributed to some well-known accidents and events in various safety-critical applications, as well as in railway, and that human factors have an impact on how reliable our non-destructive inspections are, very little has been done so far to address human factors, especially in the railway sector.
The first steps in addressing human factors in the inspection of railway axles has been carried out by analysing the results of manual ultrasonic inspection of the railway axles during requalification in the education centre of the German Society for Non-Destructive Testing (DGZfP). In addition to the inspection, 160 participants were asked to fill out a questionnaire with the aim of identifying potential factors influencing their performance. The results showed that no correlation between the possible influencing factors (i.e. experience, level of qualification, satisfaction with the conditions during the re-qualification as well as in the daily practice and mental workload) and the inspection results. The explanation for this result was found in the fact that questionnaires can be used only to identify indirectly influencing factors. The only way to identify directly influencing factors and establish cause-effect relationships is by experimental study. The limitation of this study was the inability to influence the participants in any way during the requalification examination. Another angle used to identify potential influencing factors was the use of human-oriented Failure Modes and Effects Analysis. Carried out together with 4 experts from the field practice, two lecturers and two scientists, this analysis provided with an extensive list of possible failures, their causes, consequences and possible barriers. The largest benefits for the reliability of manual ultrasonic railway axle inspections in the practice can be found in attending to the organisational aspects of the inspection (e.g. processes, procedures, communication, education, supervision etc.).
Starting from an introduction into important Basic questions of failure analysis and fracture mechanics, the author specifies what kind of questions in failure analysis can be effectively solved by fracture mechanics (and which can't). He illustrates his discussion with a number of case studies. Much more pronounced than in the design stage the benefit of fracture mechanics in failure analysis depends on ist accuracy. This is limited by both, intrinsic factors of the method and the availability and quality of the input information. The author discusses the various aspects and provides the participants with background information helpful for better understanding the prospects and limitations of fracture mechanics in failure analysis and the conditions of its application.
The combination of tomographic, microstructural data with other experimental techniques and with modeling is paramount, if we want to extract the maximum amount of information on material and component properties. In particular, quantitative image analysis, statistical approaches, direct discretization of tomographic reconstructions represent concrete possibilities to extend the power of the tomographic 3D representation to insights into the material and component performance. This logic thread equally holds for industrial and academic research, and valorizes expensive experiments such as those carried out at synchrotron sources, which cannot be daily repeated.
I will show a few examples of possible use of X-ray tomographic data for quantitative assessment of damage evolution and microstructural properties, as well as for non-destructive testing. Examples of micro-structured inhomogeneous materials will be given, such as Composites, Ceramics, Concrete, and Additively manufactured parts. I will also show how X-ray refraction computed tomography (CT) can be highly complementary to classic absorption CT, being sensitive to internal interfaces.
Additionally, I will present a new technique in our portfolio, Neutron Diffraction, which is extremely well suited to the study of internal stresses, both residual and under external load.
Current efforts for lightweight design result in a growing application of high-strength fine-grained structural steel in modern steel constructions, e.g. mobile cranes, with yield strength from 960 MPa. The design of welded structures and the welding process become more challenging with increasing material strength due to higher elastic ratios. The formation of high residual stresses, which are able to diminish lifetime, load capacity and component safety, has to be avoided. Recent numerical and experimental analyses have shown a strong influence of the heat control and the rigidity of the weld on the welding stresses. Global reaction stresses due to an external shrinkage restraint superimpose with local residual stresses in the weld seam. Modern inverter technologies allowed the development of numerous modified spray arc processes driven by the power source manufactures with almost equal characteristics. They provide several well-known technical and economic benefits, like the possibility of welding narrower seam configurations. As a result a smaller weld volume, total heat input and, therefore, reduced welding stresses are achievable. This research focuses on the welding loads due to modified weld seams. The global reaction forces in welded components due to an external shrinkage restraint were investigated in a special in-house developed testing facility. Additionally, the superposition of the local residual stresses, global stresses and bending moments were analysed with the help of X-ray diffraction. The intensity of the restraint, the weld seam configuration and the weld process (transitional arc and modified spray arc) were varied for a statistical evaluation of the resulting welding loads. It was observed that under restraint a smaller weld seam volume affects reduced reaction stresses.
Today’s efforts for lightweight design result in a growing application of high-strength structural steels from 960 MPa. In welded structures of these steels increased demands regarding component safety and a high elastic ratio should be considered. Hence, the prevention of an evolution of high welding induced tensile residual stresses is required. Recent studies showed that component related restraint conditions of welds are able to elevate welding induced stresses to critical values, depending on material characteristics, the welding process and parameters. This work involves multi-axial welding loads as a consequence of the superposition of local residual stresses, global reaction stresses and moments, varying the welding parameters under different restraint conditions. The global welding loads are measured via GMA-weld tests in a special testing facility and via a DIC(Digital Image Correlation)-system in a slot weld. Local transverse residual stresses were analysed by means of X-ray diffraction. The application of a less amount of weld runs due to a modified welding parameters and welds seam configurations revealed as a beneficial approach to reduce welding loads in high-strength steels.

When welding super duplex stainless steels a non-admissible pore formation can occur even if recommended processing guidelines are followed strictly. To investigate this phenomenon and to determine the influencing factors different claddings were produced using gas metal arc welding and submerged arc welding. The welding consumables, the shielding gas and the welding flux were varied. As shielding gases several mixtures, based on argon and 30 % helium, with various amounts of nitrogen, nitric oxide, carbondioxid and oxygen were applied. As welding flux agglomerated fluoride basic fluxes and aluminate fluoride basic fluxes were used. Different batches of the similar solid filler wire G 25 9 4 N L were used to produce the claddings on the base material UNS32750. To determine the pore formation X-ray examinations and microsections were used, to analyze the chemical composition of the claddings melt extractions and spectrometric examinations were applied. Additionally, the microhardness and the ferrite number were detected. The studies have shown the shielding gas, the welding flux and the filler metal possess a great influence on the pore formation. Even small variations in the chemical composition of the welding consumables lead to totally different results. In addition, the ferrite number and the chemical composition of the claddings depend strongly on the used gases and filler metals.

The current knowledge about fatigue behavior of concrete is still incomplete. This concerns especially the progress of fatigue which precedes the fatigue failure. Therefore, the process of fatigue itself under cyclic compressive loading was investigated in a systematic and comprehensive way. The aim of this investigation was to obtain a deeper insight and to provide a better understanding of the damage process occurring within the material during fatigue loading. Concrete cylinders were tested with a number of cycles to failure between 1E6 and 1E7. To investigate macroscopic and microscopic changes in the material, various methods of non-destructive and destructive testing were used. One main result was, in contrast to other authors, that the investigated changes in macroscopic material behavior could not be explained only by a development of micro-cracks. The results indicated rather, that the related changes in the fatigue behavior are mainly a result of viscous processes in the hardened cement paste, similar to the processes of creep. Based on the experimental results a description of the possible processes was derived which take place in the material structure during fatigue loading and also leads to the observed macroscopic changes in the material behavior. In this context, the results have shown that in case of isotropic material behavior a stiffness reduction related to a scalar value could not capture the damage effect on the stress-strain-relationship caused by fatigue.
Fatigue is of relevance not only for metals but also for concrete. The current knowledge about fatigue behaviour of concrete is, however, incomplete. This concerns especially the progress of fatigue which precedes the fatigue failure. Some macroscopic effects of this process are well known but the governing material changes behind them are still less studied. The focus of the present contribution lay on a systematic and comprehensive investigation of the fatigue process under cyclic compressive loading. The aim was to obtain a deeper insight and to provide a better understanding of the damage process in the material. Cylindrical specimens were tested with a number of cycles to failure between 106 and 107. Various methods of non-destructive and destructive testing were used to investigate macroscopic and microscopic changes in the material. One main result was that the changes in the macroscopic material behaviour could not be explained only by the development of micro cracks. The results indicated that the related changes in the fatigue behaviour originate rather from viscous processes in the cement stone, similar to the process of creep. A sound description of the possible processes was derived from the obtained experimental results which concerns material structure during fatigue loading. It has been shown that in case of isotropic material behaviour a stiffness reduction related to a scalar value could not capture the damage effect on the stress-strain relationship caused by fatigue.
The objective of this research was to determine the resistance of frequently used sealing materials such as FKM, FVMQ, VMQ, EPDM, CR, CSM, IIR, PA, NBR and PUR in fuels and heating oil with and without admixtures of biogenic sources such as E10, diesel fuel with 5 % biodiesel, non-aged and 2 year aged B10 (heating oil with 10 % biodiesel), pure diesel, standard heating oil and premium grade fuel Super plus at 20 °C, 40 °C and 70 °C.
Mass, tensile strength and breaking elongation of the test specimens were determined before and after the exposure for 84 days in the fuels. The visual examination of some elastomer test specimens clearly showed the great volume increase until break or partial dissolution. Shore hardness A and D (for PA) were determined before and after exposure of the test specimens in the biofuels for 42 days.
There is not determined a threshold for the reduction in tensile properties and Shore hardness in the international standards. Therefore a threshold of 15 % was determined for the evaluation of the compatibility.
In summary, it can be therefore stated that the chemical resistance of the fluoropolymers FKM and FVMQ in fuels and biofuels is the best one.
Nanocrystalline fluorophores like semiconductor quantum dots and rods and recently also lanthanide-based upconversion phosphors with emission in the visible (vis), near-infrared (NIR), and IR (infrared) region are increasingly being used in bioimaging studies and fluorescence assays as well as in photovoltaics and solid state lighting. The assessment and comparison of material performance as well as the development of rational design strategies for improved systems require spectroscopic tools, which enable the determination of the signal-relevant optical properties like photoluminescence quantum yields and brightness values. In the case of nonlinear fluorescence as shown by upconversion materials, such measurements must be also performed as function of excitation power density. In this work, we report on methods for the absolute determination of the photoluminescence quantum yield and brightness of fluorescent particles in dispersion and as powders based on integrating sphere spectroscopy and underline the importance of such measurements for the understanding of the photophysics of such nanocrystals.

(2016)
This talk gives an overview about self-healing polymers. A classification of the three self-healing approaches “capsule based”, “vascular” and “intrinsic” self-healing is explained. Research in these fields is demonstrated by showing current work from different research groups. Followed by an outlook of non-polymeric self-healing in the field of concrete and asphalt. The talk ends with a short overview of prospective applications.
A Multi-scale temporal integration scheme for viscoplatic solids subjected to fatigue deterioration
(2016)
Using a continuum mechanics framework for lifetime prediction requires numerical integration of evolving damage until the onset of failure. The primary challenge for the simulation of structural fatigue failure is caused by the enormous computational costs due to cycle by cycle temporal integration throughout the whole loading history, which is in the order of 10^3 - 10^7 cycles. As a consequence, most approaches circumvent this problem and use an empirical method such as Wöhler curves. They are well suited for approximation of the lifetime, but they are not capable to capture a realistic degradation of the material with a redistribution of the stresses. The main objective of the paper is to provide a technique for the long time response of a finite element (FE) model while reducing computational costs.
A multi-scale temporal integration scheme is proposed, which adapts the conventional FE method for realistic modeling of deterioration in a structure subjected to cyclic loading. For a particular case of two-scale temporal homogenization, the displacement field is assumed to satisfy scale separation: a short time scale arises from the oscillatory loading and a long time scale is due to the slow response relating to yielding and damage evolution. The original boundary value Problem (BVP) is approximated by the time-Independent BVPs on the short time scale. Alternation of the displacement field on the long time scale is correlated with the damage evolution by means of the adaptive cycle jump method. The significant acceleration of FE simulations is demonstrated for a constitutive damage model where the progressive damage accumulation under fatigue loading is driven by viscoplastic deformation.
Strain hardening ultra high performance fibre reinforced cementitious composites (UH-PFRCC) exhibit increased strength, ductility, and energy absorption capacity when compared to their quasi-brittle, unreinforced counterparts. A mesoscale finite element model can depict the underlying causes for the structural response of UHPFRC and thus help to optimize the fibre content, the fibre dimensions, and the fibre orientation.
Furthermore, it facilitates the investigation of strain rate effects in UHPFRCC under dynamic loading. The mesoscale model can either be used directly or as a representative volume element for a macroscale model.
This work proposes a two-dimensional and a three- dimensional mesoscale finite element model to simulate the structural response of strain hardening UHPFRCC. The mesoscale model employs an implicit gradient enhanced damage model, proposed by Peerlings et al., for the cement matrix and a local bond stress-slip model, proposed by Elige-hausen, Popov, and Bertero, for the bond between the cement matrix and the steel fibres. The steel fibres are modeled discretely as one-dimensional truss elements that are coupled to the cement matrix via bond elements. The implementation of hooked end fibres is realized in the constitutive equations of the bond elements.
The tensile stress-strain response of UHPFRCC is a consequence of local matrix cracking and bond failure. Both phenomena can be depicted when modeling the cement matrix, the steel fibres, and the fibre-to-matrix bond explicitly. In this work, the parameters for the constitutive equations of each constituent are determined through uniaxial Tension tests, bending tests, and fibre pullout tests. Additionally, UHPFRCC specimens are simulated with the same parameters and compared to experimental results.
The characterization of the optical properties of photoluminescent systems, that scatter, like dispersions of nanoparticles with sizes exceeding about 25 nm or solid nanophosphors is of increasing importance for many applications in the life and material sciences. Examples present nanoscale optical reporters and dye-doped microparticles for bioimaging, fluorescence assays or DNA sequencing as well as nanocrystalline emitters like semiconductor quantum dots and rods or lanthanide-based nanophosphors embedded into solid matrices for solid state lighting, display technologies, or barcoding/security applications. The assessment and comparison of material performance as well as the development of rational design strategies for improved systems require spectroscopic tools, which enable the determination of the signal-relevant optical properties like photoluminescence quantum yields and brightness values.
This encouraged us to built up an integrating sphere setup enabling absolute measurements of photoluminescence spectra and quantum yields of transparent and scattering photoluminescent dispersions and solid samples in different measurement geometries, i.e., direct and indirect illumination and the combination of both geometries and perform first measurements with selected emitters. Here, the design of this setup is presented and first recommendations concerning suitable measurement geometries are given.
The interface between materials and the environment is populated by microorganisms which organize on surfaces to form specially adapted and resistant microbial associations, so-called biofilms. Surface-bound biofilm growth is associated with substantial secretion of metabolic products that can significantly influence material corrosion. Here, a group of material-inhabiting fungi are presented, which colonize and weather air-exposed materials such as building façades, roofs and solar systems. A selected model fungus is used to carry out genetic and molecular biology experiments, which are microbiologically cutting-edge and allow for the development of novel time-saving techniques for material testing. The degree of material damage under the influence of this model fungus shows a measure of the aggressiveness of the biofilm under defined environmental conditions - and thus explores fundamental components of the interaction between material and biofilm.
(2016)
This talk presents multi-wavelength, multi-material prediction tools serving as useful models for researchers working in the field of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS). These models explain the role of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in the formation of LIPSS. They particularly consider the cases of (i) “lossy” materials (where the imaginary part of the dielectric permittivity should not be neglected) and (ii) the excitation of SPPs in a thin film configuration (where two film interfaces become plasmonically active and couple to each other).
Targeted disruption of melanin synthesis in rock-inhabiting fungi - a new tool in material science
(2016)
Melanised rock-inhabiting fungi are found in extreme habitats and along broad spectrum of economically important man-made materials. Black fungi and accompanying organisms can weather rocks and cause significant losses in light availability to solar parks. Understanding these underlying mechanisms requires a set of modern biological techniques and approaches that are under development in our laboratory.

In the last decades, numerical simulations of fresh concrete flow have gained importance in concrete industry. They showed a potential to become a tool for prediction of concrete casting and to help engineers to avoid expensive mistakes on site. A promising field for application of numerical modelling is casting of Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC), since the main area of application of SCC are complex and highly-reinforced building elements. Simulations of fresh concrete flow involve complex mathematical models and time-consuming computations. In case of casting simulations, the simulation time is additionally significantly increased because each reinforcement bar occurring in succession has to be considered one by one. This is particularly problematic in case of SCC casting, since this type of concrete is typically used for heavily-reinforced structural members. With the aim to decrease simulation time and to come closer to a practical simulation tool, we proposed an innovative modelling approach that models a zone with arrays of the reinforcement bars as a porous medium (PM). By defining characteristic parameters of the PM, its influence on the flow can be defined. This approach simplifies the geometry to be modelled and significantly decreases the computational time. The present contribution provides a brief description the proposed numerical model and of the conducted validation studies. The applicability of the model on fresh concrete is verified through the comparison between experimental measurements and numerical simulations.
Rubber is widely used as sealing material in various applications. In many fields the function of seal materials at low temperatures is necessary.
Therefore the understanding of failure mechanisms that lead to leakage at low temperatures is of high importance.
It is known that the material properties of rubbers are strongly temperature dependent. At low temperatures this is caused by the rubber-glass transition (abbr. glass transition). During continuous cooling the material changes from rubber-like entropy-elastic behaviour to stiff energy-elastic behaviour, that allows nearly no strain or retraction, due to the glass transition. Hence rubbers are normally used above their glass transition but the minimum working temperature limit is not defined precisely, what can cause problems during application. Therefore the lower operation temperature limit of rubber seals should be determined in dependence of the material properties.
In the past we investigated the material properties and sealing behaviour of elastomeric seals at low temperatures. Additionally we started to study the effect of a small partial release of elastomer seals at low temperatures. To study the influence of dynamic events on seal performance and to enhance the understanding of occurring seal failure, a setup for a fast partial seal release was designed.
In this contribution we focus on the correlation of material properties and component behaviour under different application conditions. It is desired to widen the understanding of the process of seal failure at low temperature.
BAM is the federal institute for materials research and testing in Germany. One of our tasks is to evaluate the safety of casks designed for transport and/or storage of radioactive waste. As elastomeric seals are used in the containers as safety-relevant parts, it is our goal to be able to evaluate the service lifetime of the seals with regard to the requirements for long-term safety (40 years and more) of the containers. For this reason, an accelerated ageing programme with selected rubbers often used for seals (HNBR, EPDM and FKM) was started. Ageing was performed at four different temperatures (75 °C, 100 °C, 125 °C and 150 °C) for up to 2 years. For assessing properties related to the sealability, O-rings were aged in compression by 25 % (corresponding to the compression during service) between plates. For comparison, uncompressed O-rings were aged as well. The aged materials were characterized with conventional polymer analysis methods such as hardness and tensile tests, but also with more seal-specific methods such as compression stress relaxation (CSR, reflecting the loss of sealing force of a compressed seal over time), and compression set (CS, representing the recovery behaviour of a seal after release from compression). CS is chosen as the property for lifetime prediction as it is both sensitive to degradation and related to the seal performance. CS data is extrapolated to 60 °C, which yields lifetimes of approximately 5 years for HNBR and 64 years for EPDM for a criterion of 85 % CS respectively, and approx. 40 years for FKM for a criterion of 65 % CS (the highest value measured so far).

Lanthanide-doped up-converting nanoparticles (UCNPs), are promising reporters for bioanalysis and theranostics, which are excitable in the near infrared (NIR) by multiphoton absorption processes, and show multiple narrow emission bands in the visible (vis) and NIR, excellent photostability, and long luminescence lifetimes in the µs range. The rational design of brighter UCNP requires an improved understanding of the radiationless deactivation pathways in UCNP, that are affected by size, surface chemistry, and microenvironment. In this respect, we discuss the experimental requirements on absolute measurements of the upconversion quantum yield and its excitation radiant power density dependence and present the design and characterization of unique integrating sphere setup for such measurements in the vis to IR spectral region including its calibration, the influence of the excitation beam profile and solutions to perform such measurements in aqueous media.

Characterization of multiphase metal matrix composites by means of CT and neutron diffraction
(2016)
The present study examines the relationship between the microstructure of multiphase MMC and their damage mechanisms. The matrix AlSi12CuMgNi was combined with 15% vol. Al2O3 (short fibres) and with 7% vol. Al2O3 + 15% vol. SiC (short fibres and whiskers, respectively). The experimental approach encompasses 3D microstructure characterization by means of computed tomography of samples (a) as-received, (b) after heat treatment, and (c) after compression tests at room temperature. The volume fraction of different phases, their distribution, their orientation and the presence of defects and damage are studied.
Influence of addition of SiC whiskers on mechanical properties of composite was investigated. Phase-specific load partition analysis for samples with fibre plane parallel to load was perform by using neutron diffraction measurements during in-situ compression. It shows damage in the Si phase, while Al2O3 short fibres carry load without damage until failure. The computed tomography observations confirm the load partition analysis.
The 21st century brought new and complex technological challenges, which need to be solved. Of primary importance is the global energy transition that pushes forward the research and innovation in order to achieve the goal of replacing the existing non-renewable energy sources with new renewable and efficient ones, with positive effects on the world climate. In many countries worldwide mid- and long-term goals have been set out in order to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions. Germany, among others, intends to reduce the emissions by 80 to 95% within 2050, compared with 1990 levels. The achievement of this goal is aimed to be realized by the development of new and more efficient energy sources, but also by substantial investments in electromobility (the goal is to bring one million electrically driven vehicles onto German streets by 2020).
Another important challenge came into play following the global financial crisis, which pushed many industries to reduce their operational and maintenance costs. In particular, the life-cycle management of a component has become of primary importance. In some cases it has been shown that the underestimation or the lack of awareness in ageing of plants led to incidents due to the loss of technical integrity. Other studies demonstrated that the component life of many of the long-life components could be extended up to 50% without compromising safety.
The third, not less important, challenge is driven by the development of new technologies and materials. The trends show a large investment in additive manufactured metal components and new metallic materials which have to assure longer in-service life, lightweighting and efficient recycling.
This works aims at addressing part of these problems by proposing a fracture mechanics-based analytical procedure for the determination of the fatigue lives of engineering components and particularly of welded joints. In fact, an analytical tool, which is able to simulate the main failure mechanisms of weldments under fatigue loading, brings many advantages: i) drastic reduction of long and expensive experimental tests; ii) optimization of the geometry and production processes (possible weight reduction); iii) better estimate of the safety margins used in the design of the components (life extension without safety issues).
The results show that the model can fairly well predict the lives of the welded joints investigated experimentally, irrespective of the geometry and loading conditions.

Modular hip prostheses are attractive for fitting the prosthesis to the individual anatomical conditions with a positive impact on the patient's quality of life. Especially for revision when the stem may remain, modular prosthesis are established in surgery. The additional taper interface between the stem and the neck bears the risk of micromotion, resulting in continuous damage of the passivation layer and subsequent fretting corrosion. In the present failure case bone particles in the taper connection between the stem and neck were detected using Raman spectroscopy. These particles caused high local stress on the taper surface, followed by fretting and fatigue cracking of the stem.

Calcium cobaltite is a promising oxide thermoelectric materials for applications between 600 °C and 900 °C in air to convert waste heat directly into electrical power. The solid-state reaction, well known for large scale powder synthesis of functional materials, is used for the production of thermoelectric oxides. As a high temperature process, the powder synthesis consumes a lot of energy. In different studies, different synthesis conditions were used for the preparation of calcium cobaltite. To the author’s knowledge, a systematic study of the synthesis conditions of calcium cobaltite and calcium manganate has not yet been published.
Therefore, the synthesis conditions for calcium cobaltite (temperature, dwell time, and particle size of raw materials) were studied with a statistical design of experiments (2³) and investigated regarding phase composition (XRD), densification, and thermoelectric properties.
This study showed that a higher energy input (elevated temperatures, longer dwell times, or repeated calcinations) during powder synthesis does not improve but deteriorate the thermoelectric properties of calcium cobaltite. The same correlation was determined for the shrinkage. As a higher energy input during powder synthesis leads to a larger grain size and therefore to a reduced sinter activity the shrinkage at a given sinter profile is minimize as well as the thermoelectric properties. These results can be used to minimize the energy demand for the powder synthesis of oxide thermoelectric materials.
In addition an increase of power factor by factor 10 can be achieved by applying pressure assisted sintering.

Mechanochemistry is increasingly used for synthesizing various materials including metal organic compounds and cocrystals. Although this synthesis approach offers a fast and pure synthesis in high yields, there is a lack in understanding the mechanisms of milling reactions. The necessary data can only be obtained in in situ experiments, which were only recently established for milling reactions. Herein, we present a novel setup enabling a combined in situ investigation of mechanochemical reactions using synchrotron XRD and Raman spectroscopy.
The specific combination allows to study milling processes comprehensively on the level of the molecular and crystalline structure and thus obtaining reliable data for mechanistic studies. Besides well-known MOFs like ZIF-8, the formation process of new metal phosphonates and model cocrystals could be studied in detail. The syntheses pathway of the different compounds could be revealed. The results prove that the presented method combination is applicable for a wide range of materials and will provide the necessary understanding to tune and optimize mechanochemically synthesized compounds.
High power laser welding technology has made a large progress in the last decade and established itself in different industrial applications;
Hybrid laser arc welding is one of the most prospective technologies for heavy components assembling;
Modern high speed video observation, in situ x-ray screening as well as simulation techniques contributed to better understanding of laser welding process;
New approaches e.g. application of electromagnetic fields for melt pool control and welding at reduced pressure ambient have significantly contributed to extending the process boundaries far beyond the known Limits.
Magnetic testing methods are frequently applied in non-destructive evaluation of ferromagnetic materials. In the past decade, metal magnetic memory (MMM) technique according to ISO 24497 is gaining considerable interest in the magnetic NDT community. In contrast to traditional Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) testing, the inspection objects are not intentionally magnetized by an external magnetic field. Due to physical coupling between mechanical stress and magnetization in ferromagnetic materials, it is assumed that the distribution of the “natural” MFL (self-magnetic-leakage field, SMLF) indicate zones of different remanent magnetization, which in turn, correspond to the internal stress of specimen or in the most general sense to material degradation.
Usually, MMM measurements are performed by relatively bulky magnetic inspection sensors providing a spatial resolution in millimetre range. High precision GMR (Giant Magneto Resistance) measurements in the micrometer regime along with image based representation and evaluation can provide a higher degree of information. We present a concise summary of a broader research project aimed at studying the correlation of magnetic structure and microstructure of steels. Particularly, we compare residual stress measurements in S235JR steel by means of neutron diffraction with high resolution magnetic field measurements. In addition, we discuss the influence of deformation-induced magnetization in plastically deformed specimens with and without notches due to various quasi-static and cyclic load levels. Furthermore, comparative measurements with common non-destructive testing methods are presented.
Despite of a quantitative evaluation of material degradation, the in the field inspection by MMM remains problematic due to substantial influences on such as external magnetization, anisotropy of internal magnetization and material degradation, as well as geometry and surface effects of the inspection objects on SMFL signals. The prospects and restrictions of the MMM technique are discussed in this contribution.
