This lecture deals with the sliding behaviour of polymer composites in vacuum environment. At first, the effect of the polymer matrix and solid lubricants such as graphite and MoS2 are presented. The second part focusses on the influence of the residual pressure with experimental results obtained in high and ultrahigh vacuum.
The tribological behavior of neat and filled PEEK and PEKK composites were compared in air and vacuum conditions. Very low friction and wear coefficient were obtained at low sliding speed while severe wear occurred at high speed. Experimental results are discussed by analysing the transfer film and wear debris.
The tribological behavior of PAEK composites were investigated in air and vacuum environment. Results indicate that the tribological performance of these compounds depends on material compositions, fiber orientation as well as test conditions. In vacuum, very low friction and wear coefficient were obtained at low sliding speed while severe wear occurred at high speed.
High-power laser beam welding became new stimuli within the last 10 years due to the availability of a new generation of high brightness multi kilowatt solid state lasers. In the welding research new approaches have been developed to establish reliable and praxis oriented welding processes meeting the demands of modern industrial applications during this time. The paper focuses on some of the current scientific and technological aspects in this research field like hybrid laser arc welding, simulation techniques, utilization of electromagnetic fields or reduced pressure environment for laser beam welding processes, which contributed to the further development of this technology or will play a crucial role in its further industrial implementation.
The tribological behaviour of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and polyimide (PI) composites was investigated in air, vacuum and hydrogen environments. Polymers were filled with graphite, submicron particles or carbon nano-tubes. Experiments reveal that hydrogen environment has a major influence on both polymer structure and fillers during sliding. The sliding behaviour of these polymer composites is much improved in hydrogen compared to air. In particular, graphite and nano-particles have a remarkable effect on friction and wear, respectively.
