We report, to our knowledge, for the first time on humidity-induced Brillouin frequency shifts in perfluorinated graded index polymer optical fibers. A linear relation between Brillouin frequency shift and humidity was observed. Furthermore, the humidity coefficient of the Brillouin frequency shift is demonstrated to be a function of temperature (-107 to -64 kHz/%r.h. or -426 to -49 kHz m3/g in the range of 20 to 60 °C). An analytical description proves temperature and humidity as two mutually independent effects on the Brillouin frequency shift.
The effects of weathering exposure on unfilled and filled thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) materials are described as performed under different humidity conditions. For this purpose, a weathering device was used with UV-A 340 nm lamps at a constant temperature of 40 °C. The effects of environmental (UV and humidity condition) degradation on the frictional properties of TPU materials are presented along with surface analyses to characterize the chemistry of the degradative process. Photooxidative degradation of unfilled polymer leads to deterioration of physical and mechanical properties, which affects its tribological behavior significantly. Due to crosslinking, the stiffness of the material increases, reducing drastically the friction coefficient of unfilled TPUs. The frictional behavior of glass fiber reinforced TPU is less affected by radiation.
A study on metal sulphides in tribofilms of modelled brake wear debris under variable humidity
(2017)
Metal sulphides are needed in brake pad formulations in addition to graphite to compensate the influence of different environments. The sensitivity to humidity differs a lot for each single constituent. Only one component is not sufficient for stabilising the COF and it is also necessary to add more components than only one metal sulphide to graphite. Furthermore, a good mixing process inside the third body during braking is necessary to prevent formation of solid lubricant films which are detrimental for braking. Nevertheless, not every metal sulphide acts as a solid lubricant but most of them have the ability for stabilizing the friction coefficient.
To investigate the influence of metal sulphides in brake pads, powder mixtures with up to three components were tribologically stressed in a pin-on-disc device under different levels of relative humidity. The tests revealed that each metal sulphide causes significant differences in resulting coefficients of friction as well in their sensitivity to humidity, so that only one solid lubricant cannot stabilise the friction behaviour during braking in different environments.
