A few layer/multilayer graphene (MLG) with a specific surface area of BET=250 m2/g is proposed as an efficient multifunctional nanofiller for rubbers. The preparation method, i.e., ultrasonically-assisted solution mixing of master batches followed by two-roll milling, strongly influences the dispersion in the elastomeric matrix and is fundamental for the final properties. When homogenously dispersed, single stacks of only approximately 10 graphene sheets, with an aspect ratio of 34, work at low loadings, enabling the replacement of large amounts of carbon black (CB), an increase in efficiency, and a reduction in filler load. The appropriate preparation yielded nanocomposites in which just 3 phr are sufficient to significantly improve the rheological, curing, gas barrier properties, electrical and thermal conductivity, as well as mechanical properties of different rubbers, as shown for chlorine-Isobutylene-Isoprene rubber (CIIR), nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR), natural rubber (NR), and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). 3 phr of MLG tripled the Young’s modulus of CIIR, an effect equivalent to 20 phr of CB. The stronger interactions between MLG and NR or SBR also resulted in a reduction in the elongation at break by 20% and 50%, respectively, while the same parameter was hardly changed for CIIR/MLG and NBR/MLG. CIIR/MLG and NBR/MLG were stiffer but just as defomable than CIIR and NBR. The strong reinforcing effect of 3 phr MLG was confirmed by the increase of greater than 10 Shore A in hardness. MLG reduces gas permeability, increases thermal and electrical conductivities, and retards flammability, the latter shown by the reduction in heat release rate in the cone calorimeter. We investigated MLG also as a synergist for reducing the aluminium trihydrate loading in flame retardant hydrogenated acrylonitrile-butadiene (HNBR), polybutadiene chloroprene (BR/CR), and chlorosulfonated polyethylene rubber(CSM). The higher the nanofiller concentration is, the greater the improvement in the properties. For instance, the permeability decreased by 30% at 3 phr of MLG, 50% at 5 phr and 60% at 10 phr, respectively. Moreover, the MLG nanocomposites improve stability of mechanical properties against the effects of weathering. In key experiments an increase in UV-absorption and a pronounced radical scavenging were proved as stabilizing mechanisms. In a nutshell, MLG is an efficient multifunctional nanofiller ready to be used for innovative rubber development.
This book introduces to aspects to be considered when dealing with coatings and linings. Philip A. Schweitzer covers and compares a variety of specific coatings and their applications. In 18 chapters he divided the content into two main parts: linings and coatings.
All professionals involved in design and maintenance processes get by this book a compact survey of necessary considerations which needs to be done when applying surface protection measures. The literature references at the end of some chapters support the readers finding additional information about the special topic, mainly written by the author himself. Since this newly issued paperback edition is a 1:1 re‐print of the 2001 hardcover version, neither current publications are referenced, nor revisions were made.
O-rings made of HNBR, EPDM and FKM were aged in the compressed and uncompressed state at 150 °C, 125 °C, 100 °C, 75 °C, 60 °C and 23 °C for aging times of up to five years. Hardness was measured and increased with aging time and temperature for HNBR and EPDM, but it remained practically constant for FKM. Indenter modulus measurements were performed on the lateral O-ring surface (that was free of DLO effects) to assess an influence of the compression during aging, but none was detected. The equilibrium compression set (CS) exhibited faster and stronger degradation than hardness and was used for lifetime predictions using the time-temperature superposition (TTS) principle. With an end-of-lifetime criterion of 70 % CS, lifetimes of 4.5 years, 50 years and 526 years at 75 °C were estimated for HNBR, EPDM and FKM, respectively. The activation energies derived from an Arrhenius plot of the shift factors from the TTS were 85 kJ/mol, 99 kJ/mol and 78 kJ/mol for HNBR, EPDM and FKM, respectively, revealing that a higher activation energy does not necessarily mean that the material has a higher lifetime at lower temperatures. Furthermore, the measured lifetime of EPDM O-rings at 100 °C (5 years) was compared to that predicted on the basis of the lifetime at 150 °C as well as 125 °C using the corresponding shift factors. The error of the prediction was only ± 4 %. However, this precise prediction could only be achieved using the five-year long-term aging data. When using only data from aging times up to 0.5 years and 2 years, the lifetime of EPDM O-rings at 100 °C was underestimated by 31 % and 22 %, respectively.
Ethylene-propylenene-diene copolymer rubbers (EPDM) are used in a wide range of sealing applications e.g. in automotive industry or in containers for dangerous goods. Investigations with regard to the ageing behavior and lifetime prediction of commercial EPDM rubber seals consisting of 48 % polypropylene (PP) and 4.1 % of 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene (ENB) were conducted [1]. However, structural parameters (monomer ratio, diene type, curing agent etc.) and additives (filler, plasticizer etc.) are known to affect the ageing behavior of rubber compounds [2, 3]. The aim of the current study was to elucidate the influence of each component on the overall deterioration of material properties after thermal ageing. Therefore, different EPDM mixtures were prepared at BAM, the reference being an EPDM with 48 % PP and 4.1 % ENB reinforced with Sillitin. Five more formulations were prepared in order to assess the effect of (i) filler type (carbon black or sillitin), (ii) curing agent (sulfur or peroxide), (iii) plasticizer, (iv) ethylene-propylene ratio and (v) ENB content. Initially, the properties of the unaged materials were investigated by tensile testing, hardness and density measurements, TGA, DSC and DMA. Sulfur vulcanization resulted in higher elongation at break due to the flexibility of the sulfidic crosslinks. Carbon black resulted in better reinforcement compared to Sillitin. A higher ethylene and ENB content lead to higher hardness due to higher crystallinity and higher crosslink density, respectively.
Thermal ageing for up to 30 days (with 10 days intervals) took place in circulating hot air ovens at 125 °C. Pronounced crosslinking was found to take place in all peroxide-cured materials, as the unreacted double bonds of the ENB units acted as starting points for oxidation and crosslinking. Increasing the ethylene content resulted in an increase in the ageing resistance of EPDM. This improvement was attributed to the higher crystallinity that inhibits oxygen diffusion and to the smaller number of chain scissions which occur in the PP units. Although significant loss of the plasticizer was observed, the remaining plasticizer adequately improved the tensile properties of the material. The filler type did not significantly affect the ageing behavior of EPDM. Finally, the lower thermal stability of the sulfidic crosslinks resulted in desulfurization and, thus, in an increase in the crosslinking density.
To sum up, it has been shown that the monomer composition, curing agent and additives used in EPDM formulations greatly influence the properties and ageing resistance of these materials.
At BAM, which is a federal institute for materials research and testing in Germany, it is our responsibility to evaluate the safety of casks designed for transport and/or storage of radio-active material. This includes assessment of the elastomeric seals applied in the containers. Besides examining the low-temperature behaviour of elastomeric seals, it is our goal to evaluate the service lifetime of the seals with regard to the requirements for long-term safety (40 years and more) of the containers. Therefore, we started an ageing programme with selected rubbers (HNBR, EPDM and FKM) which are oven-aged at four different temperatures (75 °C, 100 °C, 125 °C and 150 °C) up to 1.5 years. In order to assess sealability, O-rings are aged in compression by 25 % (corresponding to the compression during service) between plates as well as in flanges that allow leakage rate measurements. For comparison, uncompressed O-rings are aged as well. Further methods characterising seal performance are compression stress relaxation (CSR) reflecting the loss of sealing force of a compressed seal over time, and compression set (CS) which represents the recovery behaviour of a seal after release from compression. Many other properties, e.g. hardness or glass transition temperature, are influenced in opposite directions by crosslinking and chain scission reactions during ageing. By contrast, CSR and CS are influenced additively by each reaction type, as crosslinking leads to the formation of network chains that are in equilibrium with the compressed geometry, and broken chains lose their recovery potential and their contribution to the sealing force. The experimental results indicate that while CSR and CS show considerable degradation effects, the leakage rate stays constant or even decreases until shrinkage and the loss of resilience of the aged sample leads to the formation of a leak path.
