Joining of dissimilar material has become highly popular research subject in the automobile industry due to the reduced weight and thereby increasing the fuel efficiency. Infrared thermography can be used as a natural tool to measure the temperature near the welding region and correlate the distribution of temperature to the weld quality. In the present work the quality of the dissimilar welded sample is identified using the temperature distribution in the vicinity of the weld pool region. A numerical model for CMT continues welding process has been modeled and simulated for the first time and compared with the experimental measurement.
In the present work an approach is presented which combines various aspects of the former models with probability considerations. It is used to simulate the impact of more than one billion Alumina particles onto a steel substrate. This approach permits the simulation of an entire erosion experiment on an average PC within about six hours.
In-line laser thermography for crack detection at elevated temperature: A Numerical modeling study
(2016)
The detection and characterization of cracks prior to damage is a technologically and economically highly significant task and is of very importance when it comes to safety-relevant structures. The evaluation of a components life is closely related to the presence of cracks in it. Laser thermography has already high capability for the detection of surface cracks and for the characterization of the geometry of artificial surface flaws in metallic samples. Crack detection in metallic samples at high temperature is highly significant in present manufacturing scenario. During the casting process of billets, surface cracks form, due to the suboptimal cooling rates. These cracks reduce value of the billet and must be removed using machining process after cooling. This secondary process increases cost of manufacturing. In this work we developed a heat transfer model for laser thermography to study the thermal contrast variation with increase in surface temperature using finite element method (FEM). Here we are mainly concentrating the capability of the scanning laser thermography in crack detection which are in elevated temperature and numerical modeling study of thermal contrast variation of crack with respect increase in metal surface temperature. This study is important to prove the capability of laser thermography for crack detection in elevated temperature. Since we are using High power CW Laser to local heating of the metal surface which can give relatively high thermal contrast even at elevated temperature compare to other heating source. Here we are modeled and simulated 2D laser scanning across a surface breaking crack and developed an algorithm to produce the vicinity of crack. The algorithm we developed applied for various surface temperature data. And validated the credibility of the algorithm with experimental data.
Typical transport packages used in Germany are equipped with wooden impact limiting devices. In this paper we give an overview of the latest status regarding the development of a finite element material model for the crush of spruce wood. Although the crush of wood – mainly in longitudinal direction – is a phenomenon governed by macroscopic fracture and failure of wood fibres we smear fracture and failure mechanisms over the continuous voume. In first step we altered an existing LS-DYNA material model for foams, which considers an ellipse shaped yield surface written in terms of the first two stress invariants. The evolution of the yield surface in the existing model depends on the volumetric strain only. For the use with spruce wood, we modified the existing material model to consider the deviatoric strain for the evolution of the yield surface as well. This is in accordance with the results of crush tests with spruce wood specimens, where the crushing deformation was rather deviatoric for uniaxial stress states and rather volumetric for multiaxial stress states We rate the basic idea of this approach to be reasonable, though other problems exist regarding the shape of the yield surface and the assumption of isotropic material properties. Therefore we developed a new transversal isotropic material model with two main directions, which considers different yield curves according to the multiaxiality of the stress state via a multi-surface yield criterion and a non-associated flow rule. The results show the ability to reproduce the basic strength characteristics of spruce wood. Nevertheless, problems with regularization etc. show that additional investigations are necessary.

Duplex stainless steels have been used for a long time in the offshore industry, since they have higher strength than conventional austenitic stainless steels and they exhibit a better ductility as well as an improved corrosion resistance in harsh environments compared to ferritic stainless steels. However, despite these good properties the literature shows some failure cases of duplex stainless steels in which hydrogen plays a crucial role for the cause of the damage. Numerical simulations can give a significant contribution in clarifying the damage mechanisms. Therefore, a numerical model of a duplex stainless steel microstructure was developed enabling simulation of crack initiation and propagation in both phases. The phase specific stress strain analysis revealed that local plastic deformation occurs in both austenite and δ-ferrite already in the macroscopically elastic range. Altogether, phase specific hydrogen-assisted material damage was simulated for the first time taking into account all main factors influencing hydrogen assisted cracking process. The results agree well with experimental observations and thus allow a better insight in the mechanism of hydrogen-assisted material damage.
An ultrasonic vibration post-treatment procedure was suggested for additively manufac-tured lattices. The aim of the present research was to investigate mechanical properties andthe differences in mechanical behavior and fracture modes of Ti6Al4V scaffolds treated withtraditional powder recovery system (PRS) and ultrasound vibration (USV). Scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM) was used to investigate the strut surface and the fracture surface mor-phology. X-ray computed tomography (CT) was employed to evaluate the inner structure, strut dimensions, pore size, as well as the surface morphology of additively manufacturedporous scaffolds. Uniaxial compression tests were conducted to obtain elastic modulus, compressive ultimate strength and yield stress. Finite element analysis was performedfor a body-centered cubic (BCC) element-based model and for CT-based reconstructiondata, as well as for a two-zone scaffold model to evaluate stress distribution during elasticdeformation. The scaffold with PRS post treatment displayed ductile behavior, while USVtreated scaffold displayed fragile behavior. Double barrel formation of PRS treated scaffoldwas observed during deformation. Finite element analysis for the CT-based reconstructionrevealed the strong impact of surface morphology on the stress distribution in comparisonwith BCC cell model because of partially molten metal particles on the surface of struts, which usually remain unstressed.
