In the present study, internal damage to an AlSi12CuMgNi alloy reinforced with planar random Al2O3 short fibres was investigated after compression testing. Due to the alloy composition, this composite contains a second reinforcement phase in the form of eutectic Si, which builds interpenetrated networks in the volume and increases the creep resistance and load-bearing capacity of the material. Materials with their fibre plane parallel and transversal to the load direction were characterized in order to investigate the dependence of load partition and damage on fibre plane orientation. In-situ compression testing during neutron diffraction measurements showed that internal damage is strongly influenced by the load partition between matrix and reinforcement. Moreover, micro-computed tomography was performed in the same material after ex-situ compression for damage analysis. In the case of a fibre plane perpendicular to the applied load, breakage and interconnected cracks appeared in a significantly higher volume fraction than with a fibre plane parallel to load.
Several phases, like Nb₄C₃, Nb₆C₅ and other short and long range ordered phases occur in the region of homogeneity of NbCₓ (0,75≤ x ≤1.0) in the binary phase diagram. Properties, like micro-hardness, hot hardness, sliding wear resistance, elastic modulus and toughness can be tailored by the C/Nb ratio, the addition of secondary carbides and the type of binder. Supporting results from different grades with varying C/Nb ratio or binder types were illuminated. Thus, the NbC system offers to producers a wider process window, than WC. The impact of These tailored properties on sliding wear and cutting performance was illuminated by tribological and machining results. Niobium is today largely available. NbC can be synthesized by carbothermal conversion of Nb₂O₅ or be metallurgically grown and leached out, provides comparably low friction in many relevant tribo-contacts and displays low wear. NbC and Nb₂O₅ have so far no REACH classification related to human toxicology and are not listed as substances of very high concern contrary to WO₃ and Co₃O₄.
Stress-induced damage evolution in cast AlSi12CuMgNi alloy with one- and two ceramic reinforcements
(2017)
Two composites, consisting of an as-cast AlSi12CuMgNi alloy reinforced with 15%vol. Al2O3 short fibres and with 7%vol. Al2O3 short fibres + 15%vol. SiC particles were studied. Synchrotron computed tomography disclosed distribution, orientation, and volume fraction of the different phases. In-situ compression tests during neutron diffraction in direction parallel to the fibres plane revealed the load partition between phases. Internal damage (fragmentation) of the Si phase and Al2O3 fibres was directly observed in CT reconstructions. Significant debonding between Al-matrix and SiC particles was also found. Finally, based on the Maxwell scheme, a micro-mechanical model was utilized for the new composite with two ceramic reinforcements; it rationalizes the experimental data, and predicts the evolution of all internal stress components in each phase.
We investigated the possibility of minimizing tensile matrix residual stresses in age hardenable aluminum alloy metal matrix composites without detrimentally affect their mechanical properties (such as yield strength).
Specifically, we performed thermal treatments at different temperatures and times in an age-hardenable aluminum matrix composite 2014Al-15vol%Al2O3. Using X-ray synchrotron radiation diffraction and mechanical tests, we show that below a certain treatment temperature (250 °C) it is possible to identify an appropriate thermal treatment capable of relaxing residual stress in this composite while even increasing its yield strength, with respect to the as processed conditions.
The differences between the binary phase diagrams W-C and Nb-C illuminate several parameters for tailoring the properties of NbC. In the region of homogeneity of NbCx, with Nb4C3 and Nb6C5 other Niobium carbide phases occur. Properties, like micro-hardness, hot hardness, sliding wear, elastic modules and toughness can be tailored by the C/Nb Ratio, secondary carbides and the type of binder. Supporting results from different grades with varying C/Nb ratio or binder types will be illuminated. Thus, the NbC system offers to producers a wider parameter window, than WC.
Micromechanical response of multi-phase Al-alloy matrix composites under uniaxial compression
(2020)
Aluminum alloys are extensively used in the automotive industry. Particularly, squeeze casting production of Al-Si alloys is employed in the conception of metal matrix composites (MMC) for combustion engines. Such materials are of a high interest since they allow combining improved mechanical properties and reduced weight and hence improve efficiency. Being a multiphase material, most MMCs show complex micromechanical behavior under different load conditions. In this work we investigated the micromechanical behavior of two MMCs, both consisting of a near-eutectic cast AlSi12CuMgNi alloy, one reinforced with 15%vol. Al2O3 short fibers and the other with 7%vol. Al2O3 short fibers + 15%vol. SiC particles. Both MMCs have complex 3D microstructure consisting of four and five phases: Al-alloy matrix, eutectic Si, intermetallics, Al2O3 fibers and SiC particles.
The in-situ neutron diffraction compression experiments were carried out on the Stress-Spec beamline and disclosed the evolution of internal phase-specific stresses in both composites. In combination with the damage mechanism revealed by synchrotron X-ray computed tomography (SXCT) on plastically pre-strained samples, this allowed understanding the role of every composite’s phase in the stress partitioning mechanism. Finally, based on the Maxwell scheme, a micromechanical model was utilized. The model perfectly rationalizes the experimental data and predicts the evolution of principal stresses in each phase.
3D imaging techniques have an enormous potential to understand the microstructure, its evolution, and its link to mechanical, thermal, and transport properties. In this conference paper we report the use of a powerful, yet not so wide-spread, set of X-ray techniques based on refraction effects. X-ray refraction allows determining internal specific surface (surface per unit volume) in a non-destructive fashion, position and orientation sensitive, and with a nanometric detectability. We demonstrate showcases of ceramics and composite materials, where microstructural parameters could be achieved in a way unrivalled even by high-resolution techniques such as electron microscopy or computed tomography. We present in situ analysis of the damage evolution in a carbon fibre reinforced polymer and a Al/Al2O3metal matrix composite during tensile load, the direct observation of damage accumulation during creep of Al-3.85Mg and the identification of void formation (different kinds of defects, particularly unsintered powder hidden in pores, and small inhomogeneity’s like cracks) in Ti64 parts produced by selective laser melting using synchrotron X-ray refraction radiography tomography.
Explaining Deviatoric Residual Stresses in Aluminum Matrix Composites with Complex Microstructure
(2020)
The residual stresses in multiphase metal Matrix composites with both random planar-oriented short fibers and particles were studied by neutron diffraction and by a model based on the reformulation of classic Maxwell’s homogenization method. Contrary to common understanding and state-of-the-art models, we experimentally observed that randomly oriented phases possess non-hydrostatic residual stress. The recently developed modeling Approach allows calculating the residual stress in all phases of the composites. It rationalizes the presence of deviatoric stresses Accounting for the interaction of random oriented phases with fibers having preferential orientation.
The 3D microstructure of an Al alloy matrix composite with two ceramic reinforcements was investigated by synchrotron X-ray tomography. A deep learning algorithm was used for the segmentation of four different phases. We show that convolutional networks with the U-Net architecture are able to solve complex segmentation tasks with small amount of training data.
