Dark-field Transmission electron microscopy (DFTEM) results were obtained and presented. The results are discussed with regard to additional microstructural characterisation of the primyra Phase and creep experiments of alloy 2618A. Different methods to determine the volume fractions of precipitate phases are presented.
The LEK94 is a Ni-base superalloy single crystal (SX) of the second generation, a materials class which is important for its high temperature creep resistance (>1000°C) in first stage blades of low-to-medium pressure gas turbines. Monocrystalline Ni-base superalloy SXs have a two-phase microstructure consisting of small cubes (' phase with the ordered L12 crystal structure, cube edge length: 500 nm), separated by thin channels (γ phase with fcc solid solution structure, channel width: 20 nm). The microstructural evolution during high temperature and low stress tensile creep has been thoroughly investigated previously, mainly for [001] loading, both in terms of dislocation activity (filling of γ channels, formation of dislocation networks, cutting of the γ’ phase) as well as phase coarsening (rafting, topological inversion). Other loading geometries have received less attention.
The present work studies high temperature and low stress creep deformation of the superalloy LEK 94 at temperatures around 1000°C, where rafting occurs. Differences between loading under different uniaxial, biaxial and triaxial stress states are discussed. Stereo-microscopy and g∙b analysis in the scanning transmission electron microscopy mode (STEM) are combined for microstructural analysis. The focus is set on the role of dislocation interactions with the aging microstructure. Both development in STEM characterization methods, as well as the roles of phase coarsening, γ channel filling, microstructural heterogeneity and γ’ phase cutting are discussed.
Complex materials (e.g., porous ceramics) need high resolution techniques at multi-scale levels. Microstructure is intimately linked to properties and performance. One technique (or even a few techniques) is not enough. X-ray refraction and CT are very powerful tools. Non-destructive characterisation and quantitative image analysis techniques (2D and 3D) are necessary to understand the anisotropy.
Several restoration projects of stained-glass windows have been performed in Lower Silesia (Poland) since 2010. The aim of the projects was to protect stained-glass windows against environmental impact of industial pollutants and acid rain by installing a protective glazing. The usefulness of protective glazing has been proved by climate measurements and determination of environmental impact before and after installation.
The presentation shows how the three-dimensional quantification of dislocations and their characteristic features, e.g. Burgers vector, line direction, dislocation density, is carried out at the transmission electron microscope in scanning mode (STEM) at Division 5.1 at BAM. Exemplarily, the methods are shown for Ni-base superalloy single crystals, for which a short introduction is given using further TEM techniques. Additional examples on low angle grain boundaries, nucleation of oxides at dislocations and interaction of dislocations and carbides are shown.
The content of the presentation was addapted, aiming at scientists who work within the DFG Priority Programme 1713 "Strong coupling of thermo-chemical and thermo-mechanical states in applied materials".
In Germany the damages on concrete motorways have increased during the past 15 years. This led often to a reduction of service life from 30 to 10 years. In spite of comprehensive research the reasons for these damages have not been clarified yet. But it is known that in this context the ASR plays a decisive role. Against this background ASR performance tests have been developed. However, these tests do not take into account the effects of mechanical loading due to cyclic traffic and climatic impact. Therefore in Germany the ASR research group 1498 was founded. The research group consists of three experimentally- and two multi-scale modelling oriented subprojects, which are working closely together. Selected findings of BAM’s experimental subproject SP4 are content of this contribution. The aim was to investigate the impact of a cyclic mechanical pre-damage on moisture transport. The pre-damaging was carried out on large-format beams using a cyclic four point bending test with a total number of 5 million load cycles. Thereby the damage process was monitored by using different NDT-techniques. After the mechanical pre-damaging, smallsized specimens were taken from loaded as well as unloaded areas of the large format beams. Absorption tests were carried out on these specimens using water and NaCl solution. Thereby moisture distribution was measured with Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR). Additionally, moisture suction was quantified integrally by means of gravimetric measurements. The analysis of the first test data shows that the mechanical loading influences the moisture transport.
The concrete prism test at 60°C facilitates accelerated testing of alkali-silica reactivity of aggregates within five months. Manual measurement is usually conducted to determine expansion of test specimen every 28 days. This conventional procedure gives only limited insight to expansion behaviour of ASR-affected prisms. Due to the large time intervals, expansion exceeding the critical value of 0.3 mm/m is likely to be noticed late. Continuous recording applied in this work resolves this problem and delivers beneficial information on the shape of the expansion curve.
Different types of aggregate have been tested applying continuous and manual measurement to the concrete specimens.
Models of ASR-induced expansion, available in the open literature, so far are validated with discontinuous data hardly tracing the modelled curve. Continuous measurement improves validation and further model development.
The martensitic steels X30CrMoN15-1 and 100Cr6 did not show any hydrogen enhanced wear in sliding friction tests against alumina balls in hydrogen gas environment. However, depending on the purity of the environment, unexpected high wear occurred at the alumina ball. The results of a tests series with a broad variation of test parameters are presented.
The novel heat treatment concept, “quenching and partitioning” (Q&P) has been developed for high strength steels with enhanced formability. This heat treatment involves quenching of austenite to a temperature between martensite start and finish, to receive a several amount of retained austenite. During the subsequent annealing treatment, the so called partitioning, the retained austenite is stabilized due to carbon diffusion, which results in enhanced formability and strength regarding strain induced austenite to martensite transformation. In this study a Q&P heat treatment was applied to a Fe-0.45C-0.65Mn-0.34Si-13.95Cr stainless martensite. Thereby the initial quench end temperature and the partitioning time were varied to characterize their influence on microstructural evolution. The microstructural changes were analysed by dilatometer measurements, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, including electron back-scatter diffraction. Compression testing was made to examine the mechanical behaviour. It was found that an increasing partitioning time up to 30 min leads to an enhanced formability without loss in strength due to a higher amount of stabilized retained and reversed austenite as well as precipitation hardening.
The corrosion resistance of martensitic stainless steels (MSS) depends strongly on the chemical composition and the applied heat treatment. Both determine the distribution of the alloying elements in the microstructure and the resulting material properties. The addition of nitrogen is known to be beneficial for the pitting corrosion resistance of stainless steels. In case of MSS this effect is not only connected to nitro-gen itself because nitrogen can be used to substitute carbon which also influences the result of the heat treatment process. This paper shows the effect of nitrogen on the corrosion resistance in relation to the hardening process of MSS. Therefore the effects of austenitization temperature and cooling rate on microstructure, hardness and corrosion resistance were studied on the MSS X30CrMoN15 1 and X50CrMoV15. The effect of different cooling rates was studied using the jominy end quench test. The changes in corrosion resistance were detected with electrochemical potentiodynamic reactivation (EPR) and by the determination of critical pitting potentials. Besides this experimental approach thermodynamic calculations with the software thermocalc will be presented and used for the interpretation of the effect of nitrogen on the corrosion resistance of MSS.
Hydrogen can have an extreme degradation effects in steels, particularly concerning the mechanical properties. These effects can lead to hydrogen assisted cracking in micro-alloyed high strength steels during fabrication and/or operation in industrial applications. The Carrier Gas Hot Extraction method, which functionally combines a mass spectrometer with a Thermal Desorption Analysis process, was used for the detection of ultra-low diffusible hydrogen concentrations in the material specimens. The work shows the interaction between hydrogen and lattice defects in different micro-alloyed materials and HAZ. These steels were prepared in a quenched and tempered condition and in a thermo-mechanically rolled condition. The trapping characteristics of two steel grades, S690QL and S700MC, were studied with respect to the activation energy dependent on carbon content and micro-alloying elements such as Ti, Nb, Mo, Cr and V. The two steel grades exhibited several types of traps: carbide formations, dislocations and/or grain boundaries were common, which can influence activation energy and hydrogen solubility. The type and dimension of inclusions or particles also affected the hydrogen trapping behavior. A decrease of carbon and specific alloying elements in MC steels led to a change in the activation energy binding the trapped hydrogen. This thermo-mechanically hot
rolled steel revealed an increased interaction between hydrogen
and precipitations. The higher carbon content in the
quenched and tempered steel led to a higher interaction
between hydrogen and iron carbide, specifically in the
martensitic phase. Furthermore, the trapping behavior in HAZ showed a significant increase in activation energy, especially in the coarse grained microstructure.
Three high strength Nb-, Ti- and Ti+V- bearing S690QL steels were welded to investigate and compare the effects of microalloy addition on HAZ toughness. Charpy V notch impact tests from three microalloyed welds under different cooling rates have been performed. Fractographic examination shows that several factors including large-sized grain, upper bainite or hard second phase, interact to determine the brittle fracture mode and impaired toughness of Nb bearing weld at high heat input. In contrast to this reduced toughness, Ti bearing welds exhibits satisfied toughness regardless of at a fast or slow cooling rate as a result of limited austenite grain and refined favourable intragranular acicular ferrite structure. Moreover, in the case of such refined structure as matrix, TiN particles are found to be irrelevant to the fracture process and crystallographic misorientation results also confirms that high angle boundaries between fine ferrites plates provide much effective barrier for crack propagation and contribute to improved toughness.
Wood borers in structural timber - European regulations for their control and can TTIP comply?
(2016)
The control of wood boring beetles in structural timber is uniformly regulated in the European Union. Registration and authorization of wood preservatives for the European market has to follow a regulated procedure as described under the Biocidal Product Directive “EU 528/2012”. Non-biocidal measures of control such as by physical means are regulated individually by each member state on the national level. The Biocidal Product Directive demands voluminous data sets for product identity, environmental and health risk assessments, proof of efficacy, and management strategies to avoid the development of resistance, just to name the most important.
With TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership) on the horizon, it must be expected that wood preservatives coming from the North American Market to Europe and vice versa will mutually be recognized in the future, despite existing differences in registration requirements. The presentation will focus on major differences in standard efficacy tests for wood preservatives with claims for beetle control, which, next to others, have to be passed before product placement on the respective market. Desirable needs for future harmonizing will be identified in order to overcome consumers distrust on each side of the partners.

A significant number of German concrete motorway pavements have shown damage only a few years after construction. The alkali-silica-reaction (ASR) is often one of the reasons for this damage. German guidelines and regulations focus on the optimisation of the concrete composition to avoid damage due to ASR. Moreover, diverse research projects have dealt with the development and optimisation of ASR performance test methods with and without external alkali supply.
However, the influence of other parameters on the occurrence and intensity of a damaging ASR had not yet been taken into account. Such parameters include, e.g., insufficient curing and the modifications of concrete’s porosity due to the use of slip form pavers. Likewise, the increased traffic loading had not yet been considered. The Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) assesses these parameters and processes in a number of projects. These projects aim primarily to increase the durability of the concrete pavements, in particular by improving preventive measures that may be taken before or after the construction of concrete pavements. This paper gives a short overview of BAM’s projects concerning ASR in concrete pavements. Furthermore, results regarding the influence of the cyclic traffic loading on ASR are presented.
The paper presents a comparison between two different numerical modelling approaches aimed to simulate the in-plain behaviour of rammed earth walls, namely under axial, diagonal and cyclic shearcompression loading. In the first part of the study the mechanical characterisation of wallets tested under uniaxial compression and diagonal compression and walls tested under in-plane cyclic shear-compression loading is presented. The results were used to implement and validate the finite element simulations. The numerical modelling of the rammed earth samples tested is then discussed in the second part. A non-linear constitutive law based on the total strain rotating crack model (TSRCM) was employed as implemented in the DIANA® software [1]. The aim of the numerical analyses presented here is to simulate the behaviour of rammed earth under different inplane loading conditions. For the wallets, tests under static loading both macro- and micro-modelling approaches were considered for the simulation of the experimental tests. For the walls subjected to cyclic loading only the micro-modelling approach was applied for the simulation of the experimental tests. The respective FEM model was calibrated with the experimental results. The rammed earth layers were represented by continuum elements, the contact surfaces between layers by interface elements. This approach allowed assessing the influence of the apparent weakness of the interfaces between layers on the shear behaviour of rammed earth. The goal of the numerical simulation of the cyclic tests was to establish the adequacy of common analytical methods (e. g. used for masonry) applied to the analysis of rammed earth. Rammed earth exhibits brittle characteristics similar to masonry materials and is used in geometrical typologies, such as walls, common in masonry construction.
The repair of earthen structures is not an easy task. Earth as a construction material has comparatively weak mechanical properties. It is also susceptible towards liquid water, were it can lose cohesion very quickly if certain moisture contents are exceeded. Repair concepts of structures built with such materials are therefore challenging. Historical earthen structures often exhibit damages in form of extensive cracking, which may have been caused by static or dynamic loads. Frequently these cracks are insufficiently or inappropriately repaired because of lack of knowledge and / or technology. In particular, the behaviour of crack repair by grouting poses a challenge in earthen materials and demands specific requirements for the grouting mortar, such as low water content, good water retention, low shrinkage. Grouting materials require additional specifications such as compatible strengths and Young’s modulus as well as good adhesion to the earthen substrates. In addition, grouts have to be sufficiently flowable to fill small cracks and voids without segregation or bleeding. Therefore, the rheological behaviour has to be well understood and controlled to gain the desired effects. The repair of cracks in earthen buildings is traditionally done by stuffing manually mortar into the gap. Naturally, this method is only usable for cracks with large widths. Another disadvantage is that cracks going through thicker walls cannot be completely reached by the tools used for stuffing the mortar into the crack. Lime based grouts for earthen materials were usually used for re-attachment of plasters but less for structural reasons.Due to the nature of earthen materials grouts based on formulated or hydraulic lime (according to the definition in EN 459-1) have to meet considerable demands on a variety of properties, which are related to compatibility, durability and in particular to the ability of being injected. The goal of this study was to create a grout, which can be used to re-establish structural continuity in cracked earthen masonry or other massive earth walls (rammed earth and cob) with the focus on grouting cracks. The grout material was based on hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide) with additions of pozzolana and lime stone filler.
Starting out from Flory`s most probable Distribution concept, correct and incorrect evaluations of SEC measurements are discussed. Using the correct mode, polyesters prepared by irreversible and reversible polycondensation methods were studied. Polyesters of α,ω−alkanediols and isophthalic acid or polyesters of diphenols and sebacic acid were prepared by three different irreversible polyconcensation methods. Formation of cyclic oligo and polyesters was monitored by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and dispersities were measured by SEC. The results are compared with the theories of Flory and Odian.
Eqilibrated polyesters were prepared by reversible polycondensation of ethyl 6-hydroxycaproate or by alcohol-initiated ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone. Various catalysts were compared. The influence of dilution and of di- or multifunctional initiators was evaluated. Furthermore, equilibrated polylactides were prepared from L- or meso-lactide at 120, 160 and 180°C. A fast even-odd equilibration was discovered in addition to reversible cyclization and intermolecular transesterification. The influence of these different equilibration mechanisms on the dispersity was investigated. The preparative and theoretical consequences are discussed.
In-plane shear behaviour of earthen materials panels strengthened with polyester fabric strips
(2016)
An experimental investigation was carried out to study the in-plane shear behaviour of earthen material panels strengthened with polyester fabric strips. Strengthened panels were developed to exploit the strength potential of earthen materials and to solve its lack of tensile strength, significantly improving not only strength but also ductility. Three earthen materials were considered: cob, earth block masonry (EBM) and rammed earth (RE). As first approach the strengthening configuration, based on different adhesive materials, was tested only for cob panels. As part of the study the results of a big testing campaign of unstrengthened Panels were considered. Seven strengthened panels were tested in diagonal compression/shear.A unique reinforcement orientation was used. The results of these tests are presented in this paper, and include the load-displacement behaviours, crack patterns, failure modes. The results showed that the reinforcement was the most effective in EBM panels, with increase in strength and ductility observed. In RE and cob panels the reinforcement did not likely contribute significantly to the shear resistance, due to a lack of embedment length of the strips. Instead, in EBM it was likely that the vertical reinforcement acted in tension to restrain shear induced dilation and to restrain sliding.
Nondestructive investigation of the VHCF-endurance on cyclically loaded CFRP by X-Ray-Refractography
(2016)
Carbon fiber-reinforced-plastics (CFRP) are already used under high-cycle- (HCF) and very-high-cycle-fatigue (VHCF) at relatively low loads not only in aerospace industry, but also in other growing markets like especially wind energy and increasingly also automotive industry. While the static strength of CFRP is satisfyingly predictable by means of layerwise-strenght-analysis and material data from single layers, it is more and more uncertain to predict residual strength or lifetime as the design lifetime increases. Previous studies showed that local minor cracks and inter-fiber-fracture (IFF) originate long before total failure of single layers. Reliable fatigue estimation for fiber-reinforced-plastics is not available at present. Subsequently safety-related primary structures made out of FRP are over dimensioned.
It is possible to detect the change of inner surface in a specimen by means of X-Ray-Refractography. This includes voids, intact fiber-matrix-interfaces as well as defective ones, cracks and all interfaces in plane with the X-Ray-beam. As the crack-density (including IFF) increases, the inner surface of the material correspondingly increases.
The borderline where even at high cycles no early cracks were detected was identified for selected laminates out of woven and non-crimped fabric with epoxy-matrix.
When no micro-cracks were detected up to 106 cycles, the specimens also lasted in the VHCF-regime. Furthermore for the epoxy resin LY556 in combination with carbon fiber it was distinguished that at a load minor to 50% IFF-load level, no micro cracks were detected and consequently the VHCF-endurance reached.
The integration of the set-up small-sized testing machine into the X-Ray buildup in order to achieve in-situ non-destructive detection of the crack initiation while loading the specimens (CFRP and GFRP- woven fabric and non-crimped-fabric) at the same time will increase the performance of the studies.
In earlier investigations at BAM it was shown, that the matrix has a strong influence on the micro-crack formation and finally on the total lifetime. In order to determine the influence of the matrix properties on the boarderline to infinite life, research is done on laminates while replacing the epoxy-based matrix with an equivalent one with different fracture mechanical properties.
With the evolution of early cracks and IFF monitored as well as the influence of the matrix on the crack propagation investigated we are working on an appropriate model to improve lifetime prediction in CFRP. This work is done within the priority program “infinite life” (SPP 1466) funded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).

The field of human factors has been concerned with prevention of organisational accidents and the maintaining of the highest safety standards in organisations with high hazard potential since its beginnings. Whereas it is known that human error has contributed to some well-known accidents and events in various safety-critical applications, as well as in railway, and that human factors have an impact on how reliable our non-destructive inspections are, very little has been done so far to address human factors, especially in the railway sector.
The first steps in addressing human factors in the inspection of railway axles has been carried out by analysing the results of manual ultrasonic inspection of the railway axles during requalification in the education centre of the German Society for Non-Destructive Testing (DGZfP). In addition to the inspection, 160 participants were asked to fill out a questionnaire with the aim of identifying potential factors influencing their performance. The results showed that no correlation between the possible influencing factors (i.e. experience, level of qualification, satisfaction with the conditions during the re-qualification as well as in the daily practice and mental workload) and the inspection results. The explanation for this result was found in the fact that questionnaires can be used only to identify indirectly influencing factors. The only way to identify directly influencing factors and establish cause-effect relationships is by experimental study. The limitation of this study was the inability to influence the participants in any way during the requalification examination. Another angle used to identify potential influencing factors was the use of human-oriented Failure Modes and Effects Analysis. Carried out together with 4 experts from the field practice, two lecturers and two scientists, this analysis provided with an extensive list of possible failures, their causes, consequences and possible barriers. The largest benefits for the reliability of manual ultrasonic railway axle inspections in the practice can be found in attending to the organisational aspects of the inspection (e.g. processes, procedures, communication, education, supervision etc.).
Starting from an introduction into important Basic questions of failure analysis and fracture mechanics, the author specifies what kind of questions in failure analysis can be effectively solved by fracture mechanics (and which can't). He illustrates his discussion with a number of case studies. Much more pronounced than in the design stage the benefit of fracture mechanics in failure analysis depends on ist accuracy. This is limited by both, intrinsic factors of the method and the availability and quality of the input information. The author discusses the various aspects and provides the participants with background information helpful for better understanding the prospects and limitations of fracture mechanics in failure analysis and the conditions of its application.
The combination of tomographic, microstructural data with other experimental techniques and with modeling is paramount, if we want to extract the maximum amount of information on material and component properties. In particular, quantitative image analysis, statistical approaches, direct discretization of tomographic reconstructions represent concrete possibilities to extend the power of the tomographic 3D representation to insights into the material and component performance. This logic thread equally holds for industrial and academic research, and valorizes expensive experiments such as those carried out at synchrotron sources, which cannot be daily repeated.
I will show a few examples of possible use of X-ray tomographic data for quantitative assessment of damage evolution and microstructural properties, as well as for non-destructive testing. Examples of micro-structured inhomogeneous materials will be given, such as Composites, Ceramics, Concrete, and Additively manufactured parts. I will also show how X-ray refraction computed tomography (CT) can be highly complementary to classic absorption CT, being sensitive to internal interfaces.
Additionally, I will present a new technique in our portfolio, Neutron Diffraction, which is extremely well suited to the study of internal stresses, both residual and under external load.
Current efforts for lightweight design result in a growing application of high-strength fine-grained structural steel in modern steel constructions, e.g. mobile cranes, with yield strength from 960 MPa. The design of welded structures and the welding process become more challenging with increasing material strength due to higher elastic ratios. The formation of high residual stresses, which are able to diminish lifetime, load capacity and component safety, has to be avoided. Recent numerical and experimental analyses have shown a strong influence of the heat control and the rigidity of the weld on the welding stresses. Global reaction stresses due to an external shrinkage restraint superimpose with local residual stresses in the weld seam. Modern inverter technologies allowed the development of numerous modified spray arc processes driven by the power source manufactures with almost equal characteristics. They provide several well-known technical and economic benefits, like the possibility of welding narrower seam configurations. As a result a smaller weld volume, total heat input and, therefore, reduced welding stresses are achievable. This research focuses on the welding loads due to modified weld seams. The global reaction forces in welded components due to an external shrinkage restraint were investigated in a special in-house developed testing facility. Additionally, the superposition of the local residual stresses, global stresses and bending moments were analysed with the help of X-ray diffraction. The intensity of the restraint, the weld seam configuration and the weld process (transitional arc and modified spray arc) were varied for a statistical evaluation of the resulting welding loads. It was observed that under restraint a smaller weld seam volume affects reduced reaction stresses.
Today’s efforts for lightweight design result in a growing application of high-strength structural steels from 960 MPa. In welded structures of these steels increased demands regarding component safety and a high elastic ratio should be considered. Hence, the prevention of an evolution of high welding induced tensile residual stresses is required. Recent studies showed that component related restraint conditions of welds are able to elevate welding induced stresses to critical values, depending on material characteristics, the welding process and parameters. This work involves multi-axial welding loads as a consequence of the superposition of local residual stresses, global reaction stresses and moments, varying the welding parameters under different restraint conditions. The global welding loads are measured via GMA-weld tests in a special testing facility and via a DIC(Digital Image Correlation)-system in a slot weld. Local transverse residual stresses were analysed by means of X-ray diffraction. The application of a less amount of weld runs due to a modified welding parameters and welds seam configurations revealed as a beneficial approach to reduce welding loads in high-strength steels.

When welding super duplex stainless steels a non-admissible pore formation can occur even if recommended processing guidelines are followed strictly. To investigate this phenomenon and to determine the influencing factors different claddings were produced using gas metal arc welding and submerged arc welding. The welding consumables, the shielding gas and the welding flux were varied. As shielding gases several mixtures, based on argon and 30 % helium, with various amounts of nitrogen, nitric oxide, carbondioxid and oxygen were applied. As welding flux agglomerated fluoride basic fluxes and aluminate fluoride basic fluxes were used. Different batches of the similar solid filler wire G 25 9 4 N L were used to produce the claddings on the base material UNS32750. To determine the pore formation X-ray examinations and microsections were used, to analyze the chemical composition of the claddings melt extractions and spectrometric examinations were applied. Additionally, the microhardness and the ferrite number were detected. The studies have shown the shielding gas, the welding flux and the filler metal possess a great influence on the pore formation. Even small variations in the chemical composition of the welding consumables lead to totally different results. In addition, the ferrite number and the chemical composition of the claddings depend strongly on the used gases and filler metals.
