A thousand times thinner than a human hair, nanoparticles (NPs) are finding applications in a range of modern products. However, as some can affect human health or the environment, knowing the types present is essential. Electron microscopy is the ‘gold standard’ for NP analysis, allowing identification based on manual size analysis, but a new method was required to analyse these particles quickly, accurately and in a consistent way.

ISO 10156:2010 contains a test method and a calculation method for flammability of gases and gas mixtures for the selection of cylinder valve outlets. The calculation method is used also to classify gas mixtures according to the national and international dangerous goods and dangerous substances regulations, e.g. according to the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (UN TDG) and the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (UN GHS). The calculation method for gas mixtures requires substance parameters of the single components. These are the coefficients for the fire potential (Tci) and for inerting ability, the so-called nitrogen equivalence (Kk), which have been estimated conservatively by means of flammability data.
BAM checked Tci and Kk values of ISO 10156:1996 using three-component diagrams (Flammable gas-Inert-Air) of the CHEMSAFE® database. The experimental fundamentals and the principles of the calculation method are summarized in this paper. The revised data for Tci and Kk values were adopted in the tables of ISO 10156:2010.
Furthermore, subcategorization of flammable gases has been proposed by a UN working group and shall be implemented in the GHS in the meantime. The subcategorization requires the lower flammability limit (LFL) as an additional indicator. Therefore, a test method and a calculation method for LFL were proposed by BAM and have been implemented in the new draft of ISO/CD 10156:2016.
The calculation method for gas mixtures is based on Le Chatelier’s rule and was extended by using the Kk values for inert components in the mixture. The calculated LFLs of methane-inert gas mixtures were compared with experimental values for different types of inert gases. It could be shown that calculated LFLs are in good agreement with experimental values if the Kk values derived from three-component flammability diagrams are used. Although using the Kk values of ISO 10156:2010 leads to higher deviations, the results are still on the safe side.
In 2019 over 30 000 people were killed or injured by explosions caused by explosives like TNT, PETN, HMX and RDX. Therefore, highly sensitive assays for the detection of TNT are needed. In this study we compared two commercially available TNT antibodies: A1.1.1 and EW75C with a highly optimized indirect competitive ELISA based on a BSA-TNA conjugate. As a result, a precision profile for both antibodies was determined with a LOD of 170 pmol L-1 for the clone A1.1.1 and a LOD of 3,2 nmol L-1 for the clone EW75C. The measurements showed that the clone A1.1.1 is a highly sensitive antibody for the detection of TNT while the clone EW75C does show medium performance at most.
In the cross-reactivity characterization of both antibodies many substances, closely related to the structure of TNT were tested. Both antibodies showed strong cross reactivity with trinitroaniline and trinitrobenzene. For the clone A1.1.1, which is known to originate from immunization of mice with an TNP-glycine-KLH conjugate, this has to be expected. Interestingly the clone EW75C, which was not characterized yet, showed similar behavior. This suggests a TNA-conjugate as immunogen for the EW75C antibody as well. None of both antibodies showed cross-reactions to the high explosives PETN, HMX and RDX. Also, the cross-reactions of nitro musks with the antibodies were investigated. Despite their prohibition, nitro musks are still used in Asia especially and are particularly popular in India. The overall superior clone A1.1.1 showed a significant cross-reactivity to musk ambrette. For practical reasons the influence of musk ambrette on this assay when used in natural environment should be investigated.
In further experiments, the highly sensitive TNT antibody A1.1.1 was digested with papain to obtain monovalent Fab-fragments. Due to its high stability against the digestion, a custom protocol for the IgG1 subclass of mice, to which the clone A1.1.1 belongs, was developed, resulting in a quantitative digestion of the intact antibody to Fab fragments. The success of the digestion was determined with MALDI-TOF-MS and SDS-PAGE. It was shown that this protocol worked for many different antibodies of IgG1 subclass as well.
The impact of magnetism on chemical ordering in face-centered cubic CrCoNi medium entropy alloy is studied by a combination of ab initio simulations, machine learning potentials, and Monte Carlo simulations. Large magnetic energies are revealed for some mixed L12 /L10 type ordered configurations, which are rooted in strong nearest-neighbor magnetic exchange interactions and chemical bonding among the constituent elements. There is a delicate interplay between magnetism and stability of MoPt2 and L12 /L10 type of ordering which may explain opposing experimental and theoretical findings.
Continuing progress in the field of X-ray scattering methods empowers scientists with new possibilities to capture the most important piece of information about the structure of the sample - its 3D electron density.
Although the first methods appeared almost a century ago, recovering the density structure of a sample is still very problematic. Most avail-able imaging techniques transform a 3D electron density of a realspace structure into the 2D Fourier Transform of the intensity of scattered waves in the reciprocal space. This process causes a loss of information.
Firstly, instead of a 3D sample, a 2D image is created, and secondly, the phase information of the scattered waves is lost. The latter is known as the ”phase problem” and poses a serious obstacle on a way to recover a 3D electron density. In this work, we draw attention to the problem of forward and inverse Small Angle X-Ray Scattering. In the first, forward, part, we rethink the existing pipelines to computationally simulate such scattering experiments. Although there are efficient implementations of fast Fourier transformation, they often have some drawbacks. For instance, to calculate a 3D fast Fourier transform it is required to place its density in the RAM. For high-resolution structures of size > 1024 3 , this becomes very problematic, as the whole density structure requires more than 16 GB of memory.
CUDA solution allows for a very fast and parallelizable implementation of high-resolution data on hundreds of last-generation machines.
Such computations are very pricy and inaccessible for most scientists.
To bypass this limitation, we propose a solution for a split-up 3D fast Fourier transform, which is implemented as a sequence of 2D and 1D operations. We compare our implementation on the simulated 3D shapes and show the result of a proof-of-concept on 4096 3 Metallorganic framework density structure. In the second, inverse problem, we train an invertible neural network, that given scattering data can predict the shape and its parameters. The architecture is built such, that the inverse problem is learned together with the forward process - the Fourier Transformation. We achieved very good results with this architecture, nonetheless, further testing is required, as the current training set only encompasses three simple shapes: sphere, hard sphere and cylinder.
All code to reproduce and analyze the results is available at https: //github.com/sofyalaski/SAXS-simulations.
Finally, it can be summarized that the second edition of this popular textbook provides a comprehensive overview on the practical basics and applications of conducting polymers. It fulfills its intension of assisting various researchers from diverse fields to become familiar with fundamentals and applications of conducting polymers.
In this also completely rewritten and reorganized second part of the two‐volume set 45 international experts comprise the current knowledge of conjugated polymers. In addition to part one on properties, processing characterization and morphology, 16 chapters cover perspectives, theory and new materials.
Finally, it can be concluded that this 4th edition of this handbook fulfills, like the first part, its intention, to be the definitive resource on the topic of conducting polymers. This is assured by the updated and added contributions of all authors, which consider the significant developments both in fundamental understanding, progress and applications since publication of the previous edition. So, it can be recommended to everyone, who wants to get a comprehensive overview on conjugated polymers, not just to researchers, advanced students, and industry professionals working in materials science and engineering.
Finally it can be summarized that this book fulfills its intention of providing theoretical background and examples for practical applications of coatings used for corrosion protection.
It can be recommended to those being interested in coatings, serving as an overview on aspects which needs to be considered when working with such systems.
Nanoparticles (NPs) are tiny – around 1 to 100 billionths of a meter – and can have different chemistries and behaviours than the same material of larger size. This property has led to advances in a wide range of industries, but it can also confer toxicity. Size measurements are the main way NPs are identified but a lack of standardised methods for identifying ones with complex shapes has hindered evaluation of their potential harm.
We demonstrate the determination of anharmonic acoustic phonon properties via second-order Raman scattering exemplarily on copper iodide single crystals. The origin of multi-phonon features from the second-order Raman spectra was assigned by the support of the calculated 2-phonon density of states. In this way, the temperature dependence of acoustic phonons was determined down to 10\,K. To determine independently the harmonic contributions of respective acoustic phonons, density functional theory (DFT) in quasi-harmonic approximation was used. Finally, the anharmonic contributions were determined. The results are in agreement with earlier publications and extend CuI's determined acoustic phonon properties to lower temperatures with higher accuracy. This approach demonstrates that it is possible to characterize the acoustic anharmonicities via Raman scattering down to zero-temperature renormalization constants of at least 0.1cm−1.

Development of an affinity-based method for the site-selective synthesis of antibody-drug-conjugates
(2021)
For the site-selective synthesis of ADCs, a variety of obstacles must be overcome. Those include designing bifunctional affinity peptides with reasonably low 𝐾𝑑-values that couple to the mAb in a site-selective manner. These peptides should also include a functional group that links the payload to the mAb under mild conditions without adversely affecting it. The bioconjugation between peptide and antibody and the linker between peptide and payload must be stable and durable to provide safety when used for medical purposes. The usage of metals and organic solvents should be minimized. Within the project, new types of functionalized affinity peptides were designed, and their affinity towards the Fc-fragment was determined.
The aim of this work was the preparation of a novel stationary monolithic phase for affinity chromatography and HPLC-applications. Therefore, we have chosen porous glass filters that are available with different pore sizes as raw materials to prepare monolithic columns. We purchased VitraPOR 4 (10-16 μm pore size) and VitraPOR 5 (1.0-1.6 μm pore size) monolithic glass filters. The physical properties of these glass filters were characterized. The surface area, pore size distribution and the porosity were determined using mercury intrusion porosimetry and BET. These glass filters only exhibit flow through pores and therefore show no bimodal pore size distribution in the mercury intrusion curves. Due to their low permeability, the applied filters that exhibit an inner diameter of 8.0 mm and a length of 15.0±0.1 mm could be operated at flow rates more than 10 ml/min. High flow rates are favorable for fast separation experiments.
In November 2007, OECD’s Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials (WPMN) launched the Sponsorship Programme for the Testing of Manufactured Nanomaterials (hereafter the Testing Programme). The objective was to conduct specific tests, relevant to human health and environmental safety endpoints, on a variety of manufactured nanomaterials (MN). The outcomes of the Testing Programme were intended to assess the applicability of the existing test guidelines1 to nanomaterials, as well as to provide useful information on any intrinsic properties of MNs, which are different from the same bulk material with greater external dimensions. Understanding the properties of NMs is crucial to choose appropriate strategies for hazard identification, risk assessment or risk management measures. The Testing Programme involved delegations from OECD member countries, some non-member economies and other stakeholders. The broad international representation, from a range of delegations enabled the programme to pool expertise and resources without which this programme would not have been possible.
Final Draft of the OECD Test Guideline for Particle Size and Particle Size Distribution of Nanomaterials.
The OECD Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials (WPMN) has actively worked towards understanding possible safety issues for manufactured nanomaterials and has contributed significantly to resolving these by developing Test Guidelines, Guidance Documents, Test Reports and other publications with the aim of a safe use of manufactured nanomaterials. The OECD website (www.oecd.org/science/nanosafety) and the referenced publications contain more background information.
Among others, the OECD Test Guideline “Particle Size Distribution/Fibre Length and Diameter Distributions” (TG 110, adopted in 1981) was identified to require an update to address the specific needs of manufactured nanomaterials as the TG 110 is currently only valid for particles and fibres with sizes above 250 nm. The WPMN prioritised to either update TG 110 to be applicable also to particles at the nanoscale or draft a new nanomaterial specific Test Guideline (TG). Eventually, it was decided to develop a new TG for particle size and particle size distribution measurements of nanomaterials covering the size range from 1 nm to 1000 nm for further justification. This TG overlaps with TG 110 in the size range from 250 nm to 1000 nm. When measuring particulate or fibrous materials, the appropriate TG should be selected depending on the size range of particles tested. In line with TG 110, the new TG for nanomaterials includes separate parts for particles and fibres. For the part of this TG which addresses particles, several methods applicable to nanomaterials were reviewed and included to take into account developments since 1981 when the TG110 was adopted. This TG includes the following methods: Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Centrifugal Liquid Sedimentation (CLS)/Analytical Ultracentrifugation (AUC), Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Differential Mobility Analysis System (DMAS), (Nano)Particle Tracking Analysis (PTA/NTA), Small Angle X-Ray Scattering (SAXS), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM).
For measuring the diameter and length of fibres, analysing images captured with electron microscopy is currently the only method available. This TG includes Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM).
To test the validity of this TG, an ILC was performed. Test materials were chosen to reflect a broad 68 range of nanomaterial classes, e.g. metals, metal oxides, polymers and carbon materials. Where possible, well-characterised test materials were used. Additionally, the test materials were chosen, so that they reflect a broad range of sizes representing the size range 1 nm to 1000 nm and finally,
for fibres only, aspect ratios from length/diameter of 3 to > 50.

The book „Electropolishing“ by M. Buhlert is dealing with the electrolytic brightening, smoothing and deburring of technical materials like steel, copper, brass, aluminum, titanium and magnesium. The book content covers the basics and the main influencing parameters of the electropolishing process and provides detailed and application orientated procedure information for technical relevant materials.
After a brief introduction into the topic of electrolytic polishing in the first chapter, the author gives a detailed description of the basic electrochemical reaction mechanisms in the second chapter. The reader will also be informed about the physical and chemical parameters, which control the electrochemical removal process. Additionally, the author reports about the advantages and disadvantages of electropolishing.
The third chapter provides a detailed insight into the influencing manufacturing parameters affecting the results of the electropolishing process. Distinct aspects of the manufacturing e.g. workpiece preparation, electrolyte composition, polishing time, electrolyte temperature and alloy compositions will be discussed in detail by the author.
In the fourth and fifth chapter, the author gives useful hints and information about the parameter variation and the suitable handling of hull cells for the optimization of the removal process, followed by a particular overview about material specific electrolyte mixtures for common-used technical metals and alloys, like steel, aluminum, brass, magnesium, copper and titanium.
The sixth chapter of the book provides many selected manufacturing results and investigations on electropolishing of different metals and alloys, which allows the reader the opportunity to develop a systematic understanding of the topic and to adopt the knowledge on the optimization of his own electropolishing process.
Finally, the book concludes with a brief chapter about some remarks with respect to the work safety and environmental efforts.
In summary, this book contains a very detailed and clear arranged overview about the electropolishing method for the surface optimization process. For this reason, it is a suitable and useful lecture for people, which want to take an in depth look into the topic in order to start using this method or are interested in optimize their existing electropolishing processes.

Equiatomic multi-element systems with defined entropy are a relatively new mate-rial concept for alloy production. These alloys consist of at least five elements in equiatomic distribution in the case of high entropy alloys (HEA) and three to four elements in equiatomic distribution in the case of medium entropy alloys (MEA). Previous studies on these alloys have focused primarily on their production, micro-structure and the resulting material properties. Meanwhile, the focus here is on the processing of the alloys and their influence on future applications. Up to now, there has been insufficient knowledge of the materials and processes involved in weld-ing.
In this work, therefore, the weldability of a CoCrFeMnNi-HEA and a CoCrNi-MEA by means of a TIG welding process was investigated as a basic system. To this end, the welding parameters were first determined on a reference alloy (Ni-based: 2.4858) and transferred to the welding of the CoCrFeMnNi-HEA and CoCrNi-MEA. Weldability was assessed by testing the absence of defects and microstructures obtained. The weld metal exhibited the dendritic microstructure typical of TIG, with microsegregations forming as interdendritic phases. Increased hardness was de-tected in the weld metal compared to the base metal. In the heat-affected zone, there was little grain growth and, in both alloys, the formation of hot cracks after welding. The cause of the cracks was to be found in the specimen preparation, which had an influence on the subsequent processing. After elimination of this in-fluence, no welding process-related imperfections were found in the CoCrFeMnNi-HEA and CoCrNi-MEA.
In summary, both materials show good fusion weldability by TIG welding. The re-sults of this work thus contribute to the understanding of the weldability of HEA and in particular for CoCrNi-MEA, which was considered in this depth for the first time.

With Direct Laser Writing (DLW) maturing in all aspects as a manufacturing technology a toolset for quality assurance must be developed. In this work we want to introduce a first of its kind test artifact. Test artifacts are standardized 3D models with specific geometric feature to evaluate the performance of writing parameters. Test artifacts are already common in other 3D additive manufacturing technologies e.g. Selective Laser Melting. The test artifact introduced in this work was developed in particular to accommodate 1) the high geometrical resolution of DLW structures and 2) the limited possibilities to examine the resulting structure. Geometric accuracy, surface adhesion as well as confocal raman spectroscopy results were considered when evaluating the design of the test artifact. We will explain the individual features and design considerations of our DLW test artifact. The difference between two slicers, Cura and 3DPoli, and the implications on measured feature sizes and the general shape is quantified. The measured geometries are used to derive a general design guide for a specific combination of photoresist, laser power and scanning speed and to analyse the geometric accuracy of a structure produced using these guidelines.

Nonporous corundum powder, known as an abrasive material in the industry, was functionalized covalently with protein binders to isolate and enrich specific proteins from complex matrices. The materials based on corundum were characterized by TEM, ESEM, BET, DLS, and zeta potential measurements. The strong Al-O-P bonds between the corundum surface and amino phosphonic acids are used to introduce functional groups for further conjugations. The common cross-linker glutaraldehyde was compared with a hyperbranched polyglycerol (PG) of around 10 kDa. The latter is oxidized with periodate to generate aldehyde groups that can covalently react with the amines of the surface and the amino groups from the protein via a reductive amination process. The amount of bound protein was quantified via aromatic amino acid analysis (AAAA). This work shows that oxidized polyglycerol can be used as an alternative to glutaraldehyde. With polyglycerol, more of the model protein bovine serum albumin (BSA) could be attached to the surface under the same conditions, and lower nonspecific binding (NSB) was observed. As a proof of concept, IgG was extracted with protein A from crude human plasma. The purity of the product was examined by SDS-PAGE. A binding capacity of 1.8 mg IgG per g of corundum powder was achieved. The advantages of corundum are the very low price, extremely high physical and chemical stability, pressure resistance, favorable binding kinetics, and flexible application.
This textbook fulfills its dedication of being the “essential reference for the field, featuring protocols, analysis, fundamentals and the latest advances” of impedance spectroscopy to its readers. It really provides an insight in all facets of this powerful technique.
It should not be missed in the bookshelf of electrochemists and all other interested researchers and engineers who want to be on the current state of this technique.
The Scythica Vindobonensia, the new fragments on Gothic incursions into Roman provinces in the Balkans in the middle of the third century AD that were revealed some years ago in a Greek palimpsest at the Austrian National Library in Vienna (ÖNB), are commonly considered as one of the most important additions of the last decades to the corpus of texts from classical Antiquity. Tere is a high degree of confdence among scholars in supposing that the fragments come from the lost work Scythica written in Greek by the third-century historian P. Herennius Dexippus (Δέξιππος) of Athens. The new fragments have hence also been called Dexippus Vindobonensis. In his Scythica, Dexippus recorded wars of the Romans with the Goths (and other tribes) whom he called Scythians.
The work had been hitherto known only from excerpts and quotes by later authors. Eight pages of a Byzantine manuscript copy of the ancient text have survived hidden underneath the visible surface of the last four parchment folios of the Vienna manuscript Historicus graecus 73, f. 192r -195v4. The copy is written in a Greek calligraphic minuscule which has been estimated by palaeographers to be of the middle or the second half of the eleventh century. In the thirteenth century, the text (on each of the eight pages arranged in one column, with 30 lines per page) was washed of the parchment and the valuable material made from animal skin was re-used for Christian texts. The new writing largely covered the faded remnants of the original text. It thus became hidden from the human eye for more than seven hundred years. Its discovery by Jana Grusková, a classical philologist specialized in the transmission of Greek texts, resulted from a systematic review of all Greek palimpsests kept at the Austrian National Library in Vienna at the beginning of the twenty-first century and a detailed examination of the four folios in 2007-20097.
