This study presents the synthesis and characterization of zwitterionic core–shell hybrid nanoparticles consisting of a core of iron oxide multicore nanoparticles (MCNPs, γ-Fe2O3) and a shell of sultonated poly(2-vinylpyridine-grad-acrylic acid) copolymers. The gradient copolymers are prepared by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization of 2-vinylpyridine (2VP), followed by the addition of tert-butyl acrylate and subsequent hydrolysis. Grafting of P(2VP-grad-AA) onto MCNP results in P(2VP-grad-AA)@MCNP, followed by quaternization using 1,3-propanesultone-leading to P(2VPS-grad-AA)@MCNP with a zwitterionic shell. The resulting particles are characterized by transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and thermogravimetric analysis measurements, showing particle diameters of ≈70–90 nm and an overall content of the copolymer shell of ≈10%. Turbidity measurements indicate increased stability toward secondary aggregation after coating if compared to the pristine MCNP and additional cytotoxicity tests do not reveal any significant influence on cell viability.
X-ray tomography characterisation of lattice structures processed by selective electron beam melting
(2017)
Metallic lattice structures intentionally contain open porosity; however, they can also contain unwanted closed porosity within the structural members. The entrained porosity and defects within three different geometries of Ti-6Al-4V lattices, fabricated by Selective Electron Beam Melting (SEBM), is assessed from X-ray computed tomography (CT) scans. The results suggest that horizontal struts that are built upon loose powder show particularly high (~20 x 10⁻³ vol %) levels of pores, as do nodes at which many (in our case 24) struts meet. On the other hand, for struts more closely aligned (0° to 54°) to the build direction, the fraction of porosity appears to be much lower (~0.17 x 10⁻³%) arising mainly from pores contained within the original atomised powder particles.
X-ray refraction techniques represent a very promising, yet not so wide-spread, set of X-ray techniques
based on refraction effects. They allow determining internal specific surface (surface per unit volume) in a non-destructive fashion, position and orientation sensitive, and with nanometric detectability. While they are limited by the X-ray absorption of the material under investigation, we demonstrate showcases of ceramics and composite materials, where understanding of microstructural features could be achieved in a way unrivalled even by high-resolution techniques such as electron microscopy or computed tomography.
This presentation includes the results of a number of case studies of concrete properties using computed tomography (CT) in combination with various in-situ testing techniques, including those of mechanical loading, water transport, and fire. The results of these case studies demonstrate the potential of CT as an approach for obtaining unique, quantitative data about the structure of materials. This data can serve as the basis for calibrating and validating a new generation of numerical models that have a stronger foundation in micromechanical theory. This will contribute to the development of more accurate and versatile simulation approaches for concrete and other building materials.

Alkaline earth metal fluoride nanoparticles have been investigated for application in wood protection. Sols of MgF2 and CaF2 were synthesized and their efficacy was tested against fungi and termites (Rehmer 2016, Krahl et al. 2016). The sols were characterized by XRD and SEM. The wood specimens were vacuum impregnated with nanoparticles and then exposed to fungi and termites according to EU certified test conditions. Our results show that wood impregnated with metal fluoride nanoparticles significantly reduce cellulose hydrolysis by fungi and termites. The wood samples were exposed to brown-rot fungi; Coniophora puteana and Poria placenta. Between the two fungi, the overall mass lost due to fungal degradation was lower for treated (MgF2 and CaF2) wood samples exposed to Coniophora puteana. Thus, the metal fluoride nanoparticles impregnated in the wood samples were more efficient in reducing cellulose degradation from Coniophora puteana than from Poria placenta. However the mass loss in samples treated with MgF2 was similar to those treated with CaF2, irrespective of type of fungi. Therefore, it is likely that fungal degradation in treated samples was dependent on the biocidal action of fluorides rather than on the differences in chemical and physical properties of MgF2 and CaF2, respectively. Conversely, for termite exposure, wood samples treated with MgF2 had lower cellulose degradation compared to those treated with CaF2. A possible explanation for this difference in results could be fungi and termites use separate mechanisms for cellulose hydrolysis which will be further investigated. Future experiments include testing the leaching potential of MgF2 and CaF2 nanoparticles from wood. The results from the leaching experiment will test if metal fluoride nanoparticles can provide long-term and environmentally safe protection to wood.
Sol-gel synthesis was used to prepare nanoparticles of MgF2 and CaF2. These nanoparticles were tested for their application in wood protection. In comparison to control samples, wood specimens treated with MgF2 and CaF2 showed lower mass loss under exposure to termites and fungi. Samples treated with MgF2 performed better at protecting wood from cellulose degradation when exposed to termites. Conversely, in the presence of fungi, mass loss in treated samples was similar irrespective of the chemical composition (MgF2 and CaF2) of the treatment. A possible explanation for this difference in results between termites and fungi could be their different mechanism of cellulose hydrolysis. Thus, future wood preservatives would need to be customized according to their specific application.

Ferritic alloys containing Cr form Cr5S6 precipitates along grain boundaries in hot SO2 environment. Grain boundary precipitates may influence the steel’s mechanical behavior. Cr5S6 precipitates were reconstructed three-dimensionally using FIB tomography analysis to determine the volume, number, and penetration depth. The volume growth of Cr5S6 precipitates increased only for the initial aging time of 3 h but became constant after 6 h. The number of precipitates increased linearly.
Over the last decade nanoparticles are progressively included in products of our daily life. Due to their antimicrobial properties, silver nanoparticles are used in a high variety of consumer products ranging from food containers over medicine and textiles. Therefore, research on the toxicological potential of nanosilver becomes increasingly important. This includes investigations concerning uptake, distribution and excretion of the particles. However, little attention was paid to changes of physical and chemical properties of the particles in the human body. One of the most important questions is if the particles can pass the digestion process without altering their shape and size. In this study we report on a versatile system of ultra-small silver nanoparticles with a mean volume weighted radius of 3.1 nm and a narrow size distribution width of 20%. The nanoparticles’ coating of poly (acrylic acid) can easily be exchanged by biocompatible ligands like albumin or glutathione. The particles are thoroughly characterized by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), DLS, IR and UV/Vis spectroscopy. We used the particles in an artificial digestion procedure which mimics the gastro-intestinal passage (Figure 1). Thereby the changes in the size distribution during the digestion process were analytically monitored by SAXS. Additionally, we used as food components oil, starch, skimmed milk powder and mixture thereof to provide a preferably realistic environment. Large aggregates of up to 56 nm were formed in the absence of food additives. In contrast, the presence of oil and starch limit the radii of aggregates to about 10 nm. Milk powder shows strong protective properties resulting in only small aggregates of 6 nm radii. Our results indicate that silver can indeed pass the digestion process in a nanoscale form depending on the nanoparticle coating and additional ingredients. These results have an impact on future toxicological considerations regarding silver nanoparticle-containing consumer products.
Welding Technology
(2017)
High-strength steels with yield strengths ≥ 690 MPa are becoming increasingly significant for modern steel constructions. Both quenched and tempered (QT) high-strength steels and steels produced by the thermo-mechanically controlled process (TMCP) are currently available. TMCP-steels are usually provided with a typical mill scale. Apart from the manufacturing process these steels differ also in their chemical composition. The influence of these differences are investigated here with focus on the residual stresses formed during TIG welding. Bead on plate welds have shown characteristic residual stress distributions depending on the type of steel as well as on the heat input and preheat temperature. The following work demonstrates that the fluid flow, induced by the elements present in the mill scale, leads to a deeper penetration of the material. This can also lead to increased residual stresses in the surface of the weld and the HAZ. Furthermore, higher heat input and preheat temperature can induce higher tensile residual stresses − which are evident in the present study.
Unkorrekte Anwendung der QS führt i. d.
We present a first direct measurement of the temperature during milling combined with in situ Raman spectroscopy monitoring. The data reveal a low temperature increase due to the mechanical impact and clear temperature increases as a consequence of the reaction heat. Based on the data, temperature rises as postulated in the magma plasma and hot spot theory can be excluded for soft matter milling syntheses.
Volume fraction determination of discretely oriented disc-shaped precipitates in transmission mode
(2017)
The current review focuses on vesicles obtained from the self-assembly of two types of dendritic macromolecules, namely amphiphilic Janus dendrimers (forming dendrimersomes) and amphiphilic dumbbells. In the first part, we will present some synthetic strategies and the various building blocks that can be used to obtain dendritic-based macromolecules, thereby showing their structural versatility. We put our focus on amphiphilic Janus dendrimers and amphiphilic dumbbells that form vesicles in water but we also encompass vesicles formed thereof in organic solvents. The second part of this review deals with the production methods of these vesicles at the nanoscale but also at the microscale. Furthermore, the influence of various parameters (intrinsic to the amphiphilic JD and extrinsic—from the environment) on the type of vesicle formed will be discussed. In the third part, we will review the numerous biomedical applications of these vesicles of nano- or micron-size.

Examinations of the mechanical properties of the BAM drop hammer and the BAM friction test were done recently. In order to validate the correct functioning of both tests, usually Round-Robin tests are done with selected test substances. A relatively large spread of the results including some outliers is usually accepted and attributed to the nature of the tests. The author asked, however, in how much the mere mechanical properties could already differ between different institutes, even when no substance is involved (dry runs). A thorough inter-laboratory study was done for the drop test, and results for the friction test are on its way. The current state of these investigations will be presented.
Fracture mechanics based component design requires appropriate fracture mechanics toughness data with respect to both, loading rate as well as test temperature. Taking high-rate loading into account such as with accidental scenarios, different standards such as ASTM E 1820 or BS 7448-3 provide some information on dynamic fracture mechanics testing. Nevertheless, the designations differ so that a validation of the own material specific test method used for dynamic R-curve determination is mandatory. In order to address this for ductile cast iron materials an experimental method for the reliable determination of dynamic J-integral crack resistance curves at -40 °C following the multiple specimen approach has been established and validated. The experimental concept offers some additional valuable features. Single values of dynamic crack initiation toughness can be determined using a single specimen technique based on crack sensors. Furthermore, an experimentally independent method is provided according to which CTOD δ5 R-curves can be established. The focus of the present paper is on the validation of the experimental low blow technique using a drop tower test system.
A drop tower test system was developed and set up to perform low blow tests at temperatures down to -40 °C. The system allows for a variation of the impact mass and height and was optimized for testing of ductile cast iron at stress intensity rates from approximately 5∙10⁴ to 3∙10⁵ MPa√ms⁻¹. This range of loading rate is characteristic for instance with crash scenarios of heavy sectioned DCI casks for radioactive materials. In order to address characteristic challenges of impact tests (test duration of microseconds up to milliseconds, inertial effects, signal oscillations), an appropriate full bridge strain gage method for the measurement of force directly on the specimen as well as a non-contact measurement of load line displacement using an optical extensometer have been developed and validated.
The low blow test requires either to prevent bouncing strikes of the hammer by using the stop block technique or to catch the hammer after its first strike. Both options are not part of the experimental concept and setup which have been realized here. The paper describes investigations which have been performed in order to make sure that bouncing strikes of the hammer do not cause additional crack extension in the specimen. This is necessary to ensure a unique relation between the work done and the achieved crack extension. The investigations covered the analysis of limit loads of the specimen with respect to the measured force. The measured stiffness of the specimen was assessed and signals of crack sensors were analyzed. Furthermore, an analysis of the mechanical behavior of the loading system and the specimen by optical observation was performed. Corresponding results are discussed in the paper. It had finally been proven that additional crack extension in the specimen due to bouncing strikes of the hammer is not to be expected under the given conditions of test setup, material and loading. It can be seen as a major experimental advantage that the striker does not have to be catched after the low blow test.
Spray drying based granulation processes aim for flowable granules neither containing voids nor hard shells thus leading to a homogenous microstructure in the green and sinter bodies without strength reducing large pores. The increase of the specific surface area due to the utilization of finer powders as raw materials makes the production of granules of demanded quality more sophisticated. Innovations regarding additives as well as process engineering are therefore required.
While conventional spray granulation processes of ceramic materials are based on rotational, one stream or two stream nozzles for nebulization, the investigations in the ZIM project concentrate on the applicability of an ultra sound atomizer unit. A spray dryer comprised of the aforementioned ultra sound atomization unit implemented in a commercial spray dryer (Niro, Denmark) was used as test system. Potential advantages of the ultra sound nebulization are investigated for model systems of alumina, zirconia and a ZTA composite while focusing on solids content, yield, pressability and granule properties (size, size distribution, flowability, shape and microstructure) as well as the final sinter body properties (density, microstructure and flexural strength).
First ultra sound spray drying experiments yielded granules with excellent processability. Spray drying of identical slurries, as before tested and optimized for a two stream nozzle atomization process, resulted in a more suitable size distribution for dry pressing (less particles below 20 µm) and a higher yield. Furthermore, sinter bodies produced of ultra sound granules seem to have less large pores and a more homogenous microstructure
Ellipsometry is a useful tool for studying the optical properties of thin films such as photovoltaic devices. We employ Müller matrix ellipsometry to study the thin film photovoltaic material copper indium gallium selenide Cu(In,Ga) Se2 (CIGS), a commercially relevant material with high energy conversion efficiency. Confocal microscopy reveals an rms roughness of 68 nm, which greatly affects the ellipsometry data. Rayleigh-Rice theory is employed to account for the optical properties of the surface roughness in the ellipsometry experiment, and a library search method is used to compare Müller parameters calculated for various CIGS compositions, to the measured data. The Müller parameters calculated with the Rayleigh-Rice model are found to correspond well with the measured data, and a surface roughness of 37nm and a correlation length of 125nm are extracted.
This technique is the first to provide a measurement of the full strain field locally in the immediate vicinity of the solidification front. Dependency between the external strain rate and the critical local strain has been observed. The local critical strain in vicinity of the solidification front has observed between 3.6 and 4.2%.
UCST-type thermoresponsive polymers (i.e. that phase separate from solution upon cooling) present a tremendous potential not only in aqueous media where they can be used in drug delivery, diagnostic and microfluidic applications, but also in water/alcohol mixtures, where they can be used for instance in sensing systems for alcohol-soluble drugs. However, only a few thermoresponsive polymers have been reported that present an UCST in a relevant temperature range and “green” solvents such as water or ethanol.
In this context, acrylamide-based monomers can be very useful building blocks for designing novel non-ionic UCST-type polymers because of their hydrophilic nature (with the appropriate side chain) and propensity to form hydrogen bonds. We will present our latest results on the UCST-type thermoresponsive behaviour of acrylamide- and 2,6-diaminopyridine-based homopolymers and copolymers in water or water/alcohol mixtures, and give some insights about the rational design of UCST polymers relying on H-bonding.

We want to present our latest results on the copolymer poly(acrylamide-co-acrylonitrile) (P(AAm-co-AN)) that present a UCST in water as well as on two homopolymers based on an acrylamide derivative of 2,6-diaminopyridine, namely poly(N-(6-aminopyridin-2-yl)acrylamide) (PNAPAAm) and poly(N-(6-acetamidopyridin-2-yl)acrylamide) (PNAcAPAAm) that show UCST-type thermoresponsiveness in water/alcohol mixtures.
Our focus for P(AAm-co-AN)) is its aggregation behaviour above and below its phase transition temperature as the size of thermoresponsive polymeric systems is of prime importance for biomedical applications (as size dependent processes take place in the body) and is linked to the optical properties of a material that matter in materials science.
In the case of PNAPAAm and PNAcAPAAm, we focused on the co-solvency/co-non solvency effect on the phase transition temperature in water/alcohol mixture. Indeed, polymers with UCST behavior below 60°C in water/alcohol mixtures are extremely promising for the preparation of “smart” materials for sensing.
Advances in functional coatings, batteries, innovative organic electronics, and hybrid materials depend strongly on polymeric materials confined in thin films or adsorbed at surfaces. Subsequently, understanding the materials behavior under confinement and the deviations, from the bulk, that might arise is necessary for optimized technological applications. In the nanometer vicinity, solid interfaces and free surfaces could alter for instance entanglements, glassy dynamics (α-relaxation), and the thermal glass transition temperature (Tg), compared to the bulk behavior. Consequently, this could change macroscopic quantities of thin films like adhesion, wettability, friction, reactivity, and biocompatibility, which are topical problems for hybrid materials. In fact, despite the intense investigations on thin homopolymers films, little is known about polymer blend thin films and how blending affect glass dynamics and glass transition, under confinement.
This work discusses the glassy dynamics of thin films of Poly (vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) with special focus to the dynamics near the interfaces. Further, PVME is then blended with the well-studied polystyrene (PS) in two concentrations; 50:50 and 25:75 wt-%, which are miscible in bulk. The glass dynamics of thin films of both blend concentration are then investigated. Here, a combination of nanosized relaxation spectroscopies; broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) and specific heat spectroscopy (SHS); employing AC nanochip calorimetry, was utilized to probe the glassy dynamics of the thin films, thickness: 7nm – 200 nm. It should be noted that both methods are sensitive to different probes; where SHS senses entropy fluctuations while BDS measures dipole fluctuations. For BDS measurements, a recently developed nano-structured electrode sample arrangement was employed; where ultra-thin films are spin-coated on an ultra-flat highly conductive silicon wafer, sandwiched between a wafer with nanostructured SiO2 nano-spacers with heights between 35 nm and 70 nm. Furthermore, these measurements are then combined with surface analytical techniques; ellipsometry and AFM, for controlled film thickness and topography.
Probing of PVME thin films revealed the existence of an adsorbed layer with a restricted mobility at the polymer/substrate interface, which is independent from the bulk-like behavior and thickness independent. As for PVME/PS thin films, it was shown that the overall segmental dynamics of both blends are strongly affected by a fine counter-balance between a free surface layer at the polymer/air interface, which is PVME-rich layer, and an adsorbed layer at the polymer/substrate interface, which is PS-rich. This is the first example where confinement induced changes were observed by BDS for ultra-thin films. All results were analyzed in details and will be comprehensively discussed.
