Porous ceramic diesel particulate filters (DPFs) are extruded products that possess macroscopic anisotropic mechanical and thermal properties. This anisotropy is caused by both morphologic features (mostly the orientation of porosity) and crystallographic texture. We systematically studied those two aspects in a cordierite and two aluminum titanate (AT) ceramic materials of different porosity using mercury porosimetry, gas adsorption, electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray refraction radiography. We found that a lower porosity in AT content implies a larger isotropy of both the crystal texture and the porous space orientation. We also found that, analogous to cordierite, AT crystallites do align with their axis of negative thermal expansion along the extrusion direction. However, unlike what found for cordierite, the aluminium titanate crystallite form is such that a more pronounced (0 0 2) texture along the extrusion direction implies porosity aligned perpendicular to it.

Complex formation and the coordination of zirconium with acetic acid were investigated with Zr K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS) and single-crystal diffraction. Zr K-edge EXAFS spectra show that a stepwise increase of acetic acid in aqueous solution with 0.1 M Zr(IV) leads to a structural rearrangement from initial tetranuclear hydrolysis species [Zr4(OH)8(OH2)16]8+ to a hexanuclear acetate species Zr6(O)4(OH)4(CH3COO)12. The solution species Zr6(O)4(OH)4(CH3COO)12 was preserved in crystals by slow evaporation of the aqueous solution. Single-crystal diffraction reveals an uncharged hexanuclear cluster in solid Zr6(μ3-O)4(μ3-OH)4(CH3COO)12·8.5H2O. EXAFS measurements show that the structures of the hexanuclear zirconium acetate cluster in solution and the solid state are identical.
The program PowderCell is a crystallographic tool for visualization of Crystal structures. However, it offers also non-conventional features like the fulautomatical generation of subgroups or the consideration of non-standard settings of space-group types. On the one Hand the program is very useful for non-crystallographers who like to get an impression of the atomic arrangement within the unit cell. But also for crystallographers it is recommendable because it contains a lot of additional information which can be extracted and used like data given in the International Tables for Crystallography, Vol. A. However, the most important advantage of the program is the simultaneous calculation of the X-ray or neutron diffraction powder patterns for a mixture of up to 10 crystalline phases. Between more than 7 different characteristic radiations can be chosen and their influence on the resulting powder pattern can be studied. Furthermore, experimental diffractograms can be analysed using a refinement procedure. The implemented LeBail-algorithm allows the investigation of unknown phases. In combination with the refinement algorithm an interface to Shelx offers the possibility for a step by step ab initio structure analysis. Certainly, the user-friendly shell is one reason that especially users who are not so familar with space-group symmetry, crystal structure data or diffractometry use this powerful tool for the solution of scientific or analytical problems as well as in teaching.
