While alkali-activated binders offer certain advantages over traditional Portland cement binders, particu¬larly in terms of resistance against chemical attacks and potentially environmental footprint, their degra¬dation mechanisms remain incompletely understood at present, specifically carbonation. Thus, this study investigates the impact of natural and accelerated carbonation (1% and 4% CO2) on three different compositions of alkali-activated concretes: 100% calcined clay (C100) binder, 100% ground blast furnace slag (S100) binder, and a 40% calcined clay and 60% blast furnace slag blend (C40S60). C100 concretes exhibit faster carbonation kinetics, with five times greater natural carbonation depths than S100. This difference diminishes under accelerated carbonation, showing a 1.5 times difference for 1% CO2 and complete carbonation for 4% CO2 at 90 days. The results thus confirm that accelerated carbonation testing of low-Ca alkali-activated concretes yields results that are not representative of natural carbonation. The C40S60 sample demonstrates a carbonation profile similar to a CEM I concrete, i.e., a high carbonation resistance. Microstructure analysis indicates the formation of three polymorphs of calcium carbonate for S100 (calcite, vaterite, and aragonite), with a higher CO2 concentration favouring aragonite over vaterite. C100 exhibits no calcium carbonates; instead, sodium carbonates form, including trona for 4% CO2 and natrite for both accelerated tests. C40S60 shows calcium and sodium carbonates, although to a lesser extent, containing predominantly calcite and minor signals of natrite. Suitable compositions, like C40S60, prove as effective during natural or accelerated carbonation tests as conventional Portland cement concrete.
In this presentation, the results of the determination of the diffraction and single-crystal elastic constants of laser powder bed fused Inconel 718 are presented. The analysis is based on high-energy synchrotron diffraction experiments performed at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron. It is shown that the characteristic microstructure of laser powder bed fused Inconel 718 impacts the elastic anisotropy and therefore the diffraction and single-crystal elastic constants. Finally, the consequences on the diffraction-based residual stress determination of laser powder bed fused Inconel 718 are discussed.

In this study, we present the physical background and material development strategies for the application of two-photon polymerization (2PP) and selective volumetric sintering for the additive manufacturing of structures in the volume of ceramic slips and green compacts.
Bruchmechanik-basierende Methoden können für die Ermüdungsbewertung von mechanischen Bauteilen angewendet werden, die Defekte oder Risse enthalten und zyklischen Belastungen ausgesetzt sind. Die Kenntnis des Risswachstumsverhaltens für kurze und lange Risse ermöglicht die Bestimmung sowohl endlicher als auch unendlicher Lebensdauer. Ein erstes Problem ergibt sich jedoch aus der empirischen Bestimmung von Ermüdungswerkstoffkennwerten, die je nach Prüfbedingungen, z. B. Prüfmethode, Frequenz und Spannungsverhältnis R, variieren. Dies ist auf die Rissschließeffekte und weitere Umgebungsphänomene zurückzuführen, die das Rissfortschrittsverhalten beeinflussen. Ein zweites Problem ist das Fehlen von Standardversuchsverfahren zur Bestimmung des Schwellenwerts gegen Ermüdungsrissausbreitung ΔKth in Abhängigkeit von der Rissausbreitung. Dies ist problematisch, da ΔKth mit der Zunahme der Rissschließeffekte im Kurzrissbereich zunimmt und seine ungenaue experimentelle Bestimmung zu großen Abweichungen bei der Bewertung und, was noch kritischer ist, zu nicht konservativen Vorhersagen führt. Mit dem Ziel, zuverlässigere und sicherere Bewertungsverfahren bereitzustellen, wird in dieser Arbeit eine Methode vorgeschlagen, die auf effektiven Risswachstumsdaten basiert, die bei hohen Spannungsverhältnissen (R ≈ 0,8) ermittelt wurden. Zur Beschreibung der Entwicklung der Rissschließeffekte wird ein Kurzrissmodell auf der Grundlage von zyklischen R-Kurven und CPLR-Daten verwendet. Die analytischen Vorhersagen werden mit experimentellen Daten verglichen, die zur Validierung des Verfahrens durchgeführt wurden, und die daraus entstandenen Unterschiede werden diskutiert.

Optical biosensors often show remarkable performance and can be configured in many ways for sensitive, selective, and rapid measurements. However, the high-quality and advanced optical assemblies required to read out the sensor signals, for example, Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence (TIRF) or Supercritical Angle Fluorescence (SAF) microscopy, which necessitate complex and expensive optical elements. Particularly in optical method development, researchers or developers are often confronted with limitations because conventional manufacturing processes for optical elements can be restrictive in terms of design, material, time, and cost. Modern and high-resolution 3D printing techniques make it possible to overcome these challenges and enable the fabrication of individualized and personalized free-form optical components, which can reduce costs and significantly shorten the prototyping timeline—from months to hours. In this work, we use a modern, high-resolution (< 22 µm) commercial Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)-based 3D printer, for which we spectroscopically and physically characterized commercial photo-resins printable with the LCD technique in the first step (Figure 1). The aim was not only to produce a printed element with a high surface quality that mitigates the inner filter effects caused by attenuation (high optical density (OD) due to reflection and scattering), but also to select a material with a high refractive index (RI>1.5) and high transmission values (>90% transmittance) in the visible to near-infrared spectral range (approx. 450 – 900 nm) that exhibits little or no autofluorescence. Using a selection of suitable resins, lenses and free-form optical elements were manufactured for comparison with standard glass or plastic counterparts.
The Binder Jetting BJ process is one of the most versatile additive manufacturing technologies in use. In this process a binder is locally jetted into a powder bed for the consolidation of a 3D structure, layer by layer. Basically, all materials which can be provided as a flowable powder and, thus, spreadable to a thin layer, can be processed. Metals, ceramics and polymers are processable, but also materials from nature, such as sand, wood sawdust and insect frass. Moreover, the BJ technology is adapted to large building volumes of some cubic meters easily. Besides these striking advantages, the manufacture of ceramic parts by BJ is still challenging, as the packing density of the powder bed is generally too low and the particle size of a flowable powder too large for a successful densification of printed parts in a subsequent sintering step to an advanced ceramic product. After an introduction of binder jetting in general and highlighting some examples, strategies for obtaining dense ceramic parts by BJ will be introduced.
Ziel des FuE-Vorhabens ist die Entwicklung, Aufbau und Validierung eines gasto-mographischen Messsystems basierend auf stationärer und mobiler Sensorik zum Emissionsmonitoring in kommunalen Kläranlagen. Die Gastomographie basiert hierbei im Wesentlichen auf, aus unterschiedlichen Sichtwinkeln aufgenommenen, integralen Konzentrationsmessungen, anhand derer eine Rekonstruktion der Gasverteilung erfolgt. Das FuE-Projekt kombiniert hierfür stationäre Sensornetzwerke mit luftgestützten und bodengebundenen Robotersystemen in einem System. Letztere werden mit Reflektoren und/oder Gasdetektoren ausgestattet. Hierfür werden Open-Path-Gasmesstechnik basierend auf Tunable Diode Laser Ab-sorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS, primär CH4 in ppm·m) und In-situ-Gassensorik (CH4, ppm) auf Basis von z.B. Infrarot eingesetzt. Dies sind zwei komplementäre Methoden der Gasmessung: Die In-situ-Gassensorik ermöglicht Punktmessungen, wohingegen TDLAS-Sensoren Gaskonzentrationen integral über offene Messstre-cken von bis zu 60 m gegen Oberflächen messen. Die In-situ-Gassensorik wird für Referenzmessungen und ggf. zur Erhöhung der Rekonstruktionsqualität zum Ein-satz kommen. Die wesentlichen Neuheiten des Projekts sind:
• 2D-Gastomographie auf Basis eines mit TDLAS-basierter Open-Path-Gasmesstechnik und Reflektoren ausgestatteten heterogenen Messsystems.
• CT-basierte Rekonstruktionsalgorithmen, adaptiert an die komplexen Rahmenbedingungen.
• Validierung des Messsystems anhand realer Messungen auf Kläranlagen.
Regarding feedstocks for the additive manufacturing (AM) of ceramics, two features are most critical in classical powder based AM processes: a high particle packing density (typically >50% TD) must be achieved with very fine particles (typically submicron) in order to ensure sufficient sintering activity. Three innovative approaches will be introduced to overcome this problem:
1. Layer wise slurry deposition: The use of water based ceramic slurries as feedstock for the additive manufacture of ceramics has many advantages which are not fully exploit yet. In the layerwise slurry deposition (LSD) process a slurry with no or low organic content is repetitively spread as thin layers on each other by means of a doctor blade. During the deposition, the ceramic particles settle on the previously deposited and dried material to form thin layers with a high packing density (55-60%). The LSD therefore shares aspects both of tape casting and slip casting. The LSD differentiates from the classical powder-based AM layer deposition, which typically achieves with a flowable coarse grained powder a low packing density (35-50%) only, consequently hindering the ability of sintering ceramic parts to full density. The LSD is coupled with the principles of selective laser sintering (SLS) or binder jetting, to generate novel processes which take advantage of the possibility of achieving a highly dense powder-bed.
2. Laser induced slip casting: Contrary to the LSD process, which requires drying of each individual layer, the direct interaction of ceramic slurries with intense laser radiation, for the laser induced slip casting (LIS), is a promising approach for the additive manufacture of voluminous parts.
3. Gas flow assisted powder deposition: By the application of a vacuum pump a gas flow is realized throughout the powder bed. This gas flow stabilizes the powder bed and results into an enhanced flowability and packing density of the powder during layer deposition.
The presentation will provide a detailed discussion of potentialities and issues connected to the mentioned technologies and will describe the most recent developments in their application to technical ceramics.
Gas turbine components, made of nickel-based alloys, undergo material damage due to high temperatures and mechanical stresses. These components need periodic replacement to avoid efficiency loss and failure. Repair of these parts is more cost-effective than replacement. State-of-the-art repair technologies, including different additive manufacturing (AM) and brazing processes, are considered for efficient restoration. Materials properties mismatches and/or internal defects in repaired parts may expedite crack initiation and propagation, reducing fatigue life. To understand the crack growth behavior in joining zones and predict the remaining life of repaired components, fatigue crack growth (FCG) tests were conducted on specimens of nickel-based alloys joined via brazing, pre-sintered preforms and AM. The FCG experimental technique was successfully adapted for joined specimens and results indicate that the investigated braze material provides a lower resistance to crack growth. In AM-sandwich specimens, the crack growth rates are significantly reduced at the interface of AM and cast material.
Advances in ultrafast laser manufacturing: nanostructures, thin films, and scaling perspectives

Advanced ultrafast laser technology is a rapidly growing field that currently enables many new industrial and scientific applications. During the last decades, this has been significantly driven by the availability of high-repetition-rate laser sources and novel beam delivery concepts. At the laser side, Moore’s law equally manifests for ultrafast laser technologies, since the average output power of such lasers doubles approximately every two years. This development is mainly driven by the increase of the pulse repetition rates of energetic laser pulses, currently enforcing the development of smart beam control and novel scanning strategies for preventing heat-accumulation and plasma-shielding effects during laser-based materials processing. This keynote presentation addresses the advantages, recent developments, and perspectives of laser processing with ultrashort laser pulses. A special focus is laid on the tailored structuring of thin films as well as the manufacturing and probing of sub-diffraction surface nanostructures – an ongoing race to extreme scales. Current limitations are identified and an outlook to future scaling perspectives will be provided.
Weltweit stellen Waldbrände eine große Bedrohung für Umwelt, Wirtschaft und menschliches Leben dar. Der fortschreitende Klimawandel verstärkt Trockenheit und Dürre, wodurch die Größe und Intensität von Waldbränden sowie das daraus resultierende Gefahrenpotential zusätzlich erhöht werden. Um im Risikofall eine schnelle und effektive Waldbrandbekämpfung zu gewährleisten, sollen Einsatzkräfte in Zukunft von KI-basierten Ausbreitungsmodellen unterstützt werden.
Der Einsatz von maschinellem Lernen ermöglicht dabei schnelle und zielgerichtete Ausbreitungsvorhersagen in Echtzeit, die in den Prozess der Brandbekämpfung als zusätzliche Information einfließen können. Im Rahmen des durch das EU-Förderprogram Horizon 2020 finanzierte Projekt TREEADS wird ein solches Modell für Europa entwickelt.
Dazu wird mit verschiedenen Satellitendaten des Copernicus-Programms und der NASA ein auf räumlicher und zeitlicher Ebene aufgelöster Datensatz zu europäischen Waldbränden aufgebaut. Zu den erfassten Waldbränden werden wichtigen Faktoren, die Einfluss auf die Brandausbreitung haben, ergänzt. Dazu gehören das von Copernicus bereitgestellte, digitale Geländemodell Europas und verschiedene, von Sentinel-2 Messungen abgeleitete Informationen zu Vegetation und Landnutzung. Dieser 2D-Trainingsdatensatz zu realen Waldbränden wird durch die zeitlich hochaufgelösten, meteorologischen Reanalyse-Produkte – Copernicus European Regional ReAnalysis (CERRA) und ERA5-Land – vervollständigt und ist die Grundlage für ein Modell zur Ausbreitungsvorhersage von Waldbränden.
Methoden des Maschinellen Lernens können komplexe Muster in den gesammelten Daten erkennen und so zu einer verbesserten Vorhersage der Brandausbreitung beitragen. Die vielfältigen, von Copernicus bereitgestellten Daten sind dabei ein unabdingbarer Bestandteil des Modells, mit dem den Einsatzkräften ein zusätzliches Tool für den effizienten Einsatz ihrer limitierten Ressourcen zur Verfügung steht.
The presentation demonstrates an application of multi-scale optical imaging methods such as spectroscopic imaging ellipsometry and white light interference microscopy for the investigation of wide-bandgap semiconductors for power electronics. The capabilities of these methods for the development of new reference calibration samples for scanning microwave microscopes (SMM) and conductive atomic force microscopes (C AFM) are discussed.
Unlike conventional alloys, which typically consist of one main element, high-entropy alloys (HEAs) contain five or more principal elements, which broaden chemical complexity and with it a realm of synergistic mechanisms. The AlMo0.5NbTa0.5TiZr HEA initiated a subclass of Al-containing refractory (r)HEAs that has recently drawn attention [2]. The alloy has a superalloy-resembling B2/bcc nanostructure, which inspired its name refractory high entropy superalloy (RSA). With high-temperature (HT) compressive strengths beyond conventional Ni-based superalloys, this nanostructure could be used for improved HT structural applications. However, in the application-relevant HT regime the Al-Zr-rich B2 phase decomposes to form a hexagonal Al-Zr-based intermetallic (Al4-xZr5; x: 0..1) [3,4]. This work explores the fascinating yet fatal micromechanisms associated to this phase transformation, in the context of creep, annealing and oxidation experiments performed between 800 and 1200 °C.
The material was produced by arc-melting and heat treatment in argon, which lead to grain boundaries decorated with up to 7%. Interrupted constant-load creep tests were performed under vacuum (at 10-4 Pa), at 900–1100 °C with external tensile stresses of 30–120 MPa. Oxidation experiments were separately conducted for 24 hours at 800 and 1000 °C in both dry (21% O2 + 79% N2) and humid (8% O2 + 74% N2 + 18% H2O) air. After the experiments, the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy to reveal degradation mechanisms. Crystallographic texture, orientation relationships and stabilization of an oxygen-containing iso structure (Al4-xZr5(Ox-y); y: 0..x) of the Al-Zr-rich intermetallic are found and discussed.
Die Umweltwirkungen auf ein Material werden als Überlapp der Funktionskurven von Materialempfindlichkeit und einwirkenden Umweltparametern betrachtet. Wenn entweder die Empfindlichkeit oder die Beanspruchungen Null sind, ergibt sich auch keine Umweltwirkung und bei beidseitig Werten größer Null das jeweilige Produkt der beiden. Die Akkumulation der nicht-reversiblen Effekte über die Zeit und allen Eigenschaftsänderungen entspricht der Alterung des Materials für den jeweiligen Expositionszeitraum.
Die digitale Umweltsimulation gliedert sich hier in drei Teilaspekte. Ein erster, rein materialwissenschaftlicher Teil hat die Aufgabe, alle relevanten Materialempfindlichkeiten experimentell zu quantifizieren. Ein zweiter – unter Umständen numerischer Teil – hat die Aufgabe, das Bauteil und seine Einbaulage zu digitalisieren und aus den makroskopischen Umgebungsbedingungen die relevanten mikroklimatischen Umweltparameter für alle Oberflächen- oder Volumenelemente zu bestimmen. In einem dritten Teil werden die Einwirkungen über den betrachteten Zeitraum berechnet und kumuliert. Dieses Konzept, das auf den so genannten Expositions-Reaktions-Funktionen (ERF) basiert, wird an Beispielen der Photoxidation erläutert. Dieses Vorgehen wurde schon beim ViPQuali-Projekt als Numerische Umweltsimulation umgesetzt.
Überprüft werden muss das Modell unbedingt an einer realitätsnahen Validierungsbeanspruchung. Hier werden die ermittelten ERFs mit über den kompletten Beanspruchungszeitraum geloggten Umweltparametern gekoppelt, um die berechnete mit der experimentell erfahrenen Alterungswirkung zu vergleichen. Nur so kann sichergestellt sein, dass alle für die Anwendungsumgebung relevanten Materialempfindlichkeiten einbezogen wurden.
Interactions between a polymer and a substrate interface play a vital role in understanding the improvement in thin film material properties as well as serving as a model for nanocomposites. For any non-repulsive polymer-substrate interactions, polymer segments form an irreversibly adsorbed layer and show a slowdown in the glassy dynamics and thus an increase in the thermal glass transition temperature compared to the bulk-like values. The growth kinetics of the adsorbed layer showed a deviation for both poly (bisphenol-A carbonate) (PBAC) and polysulfone (PSU), two bulky polymers containing a functional group (phenyl ring) in the backbone, compared to conventional polymers previously studied like poly-2-vinyl pyridine (P2VP). This deviation was attributed to the bulkiness of the phenyl rings. . Further investigations into the influence of the adsorbed layer on glassy dynamics were conducted. The molecular mobility and glass transition for thin films of PBAC and PSU were compared to bulk samples of each polymer. Broadband dielectric spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and ellipsometry were primarily used and additionally supported by sum frequency generation spectroscopy.
This contribution presents the results of an experimental study on the LCF behavior of an austenitic 316L stainless steel produced by laser powder bed fusion featuring a low defect population, which allows for an improved understanding of the role of other typical aspects of a PBF‑LB microstructure. The LCF tests were performed between room temperature and 600 °C. A hot‑rolled 316L variant was tested as a reference. The mechanical response is characterized by strain-life curves, a Coffin‑Manson‑Basquin fitting, and cyclic deformation curves. The damage and deformation mechanisms are studied with X-ray computed tomography, optical and electron microscopy. The PBF‑LB/M/316L exhibits lower fatigue lives at lower strain amplitudes. The crack propagation is mainly transgranular. The solidification cellular structure seems to be the most relevant underlying microstructural feature determining the cyclic deformation behavior.
Im Rahmen eines Kooperationsprojekts mit der Schottel GmbH wurde eine bauteilnahe Probengeometrie entwickelt, mit der sich unter Verwendung einer einachsigen Prüfmaschine das Spannungstiefenprofil in dem unter überlagerter Biege- und Zugspannung beanspruchtem Querschnitt im Schweißnahtübergang des Bauteils reproduzieren ließ.
Proben dieser Geometrie wurden vom Kooperationspartner im geschweißten bzw. geschweißten und spannungsarmgeglühten Zustand bereitgestellt. An der BAM wurden je Wärmebehandlungszustand mittels Senkerodieren zwei verschiedene künstliche Defektgeometrien im Schweißnahtübergang eingebracht.
Anhand der Proben wurden experimentell für alle vier Probenzustände Wöhlerlinien für ein Spannungsverhältnis von R = 0,1 ermittelt.
Zusätzlich wurde das u.a. an der BAM entwickelte IBESS-Verfahren angewandt, um die Wöhlerlinien analytisch zu bestimmen. Hierbei wurde eine sehr gute Übereinstimmung von Berechnung und Experiment erreicht, wobei die Berechnung zu einer leicht konservativen Lebensdauervorhersage führte.
The use of a dedicated approach: DoE for synthesis + characterization + Chemometric Analysis, is a valuable method for the safe-by-design synthesis of several types of materials for large-scale application in catalysis, energy harvesting, biomedical and environmental applications, etc. This approach is not only related to the material synthesis, but can be expanded to any type of molecules/material, with relevant saving of solvents, energy and times.
Ultrasonic guided waves interacting with complex geometrical features are of high interest in the SHM field. For example, investigations into the extent to which a small change in defect geometry affects wave propagation have applications in Probability of Detection and defect reconstruction. These fields have to be supported by numerical tools aiming to retrieve accurate and reliable results and, thus, more realistic modeling.
Due to the short wavelengths of ultrasonic waves and the relatively large domains in which the waves propagate, fine grid resolution for the entire domain is usually not possible due to limited computational resources. One solution is to partition the domain into different subdomains and use a specific, efficient approach for each subdomain.
This contribution shows a combination of methods that aims to study these wave defect interactions in an elastic media. Firstly we introduce high-order 3D meshes that can resolve very fine geometrical details and are based on an Octree discretisation technique that employs special transition shape functions to resolve the hanging nodes that may appear due to the nature of the method. Afterward, the Octree mesh is embedded in a prismatic wave-guide based on the semi-analytical formulation of the SBFEM in 3D. To couple the different domains, we employ the mortar method, which enforces the continuity of the wave field across the internal boundaries of the domains. Examples show the power of the approach especially when it comes to parametric analysis.
For structural health monitoring systems or non-destructive testing, it is crucial to study the interactions of ultrasonic-guided waves with inhomogeneities or damage in structural components. Simulation of these interactions poses a challenge.
After the wave-damage interaction, the numerical model must reproduce features like mode conversion or wave scattering. Mathematically, damages are discontinuities in a computational domain, and each interacts diversely depending on its geometrical features. We propose a quadtree-based meshing in the current contribution to capture these geometrical
characteristics.
This kind of discretisation approach requires special techniques to couple cells of different sizes since, after a quadtree decomposition, the problem of so-called hanging nodes may arise. Transition elements based on high-order transfinite shape functions are used to solve this issue. The advantage is that these elements allow the correct coupling of the cells while retaining a high-order interpolation. Moreover, the reuse of the dynamic stiffness matrices can be exploited based on the similarity of the cells. This procedure renders the approach very efficient.
Examples show the scattering characteristics of different guided wave modes after interacting with inhomogeneities and discontinuities in a plate.
New analytic ways to characterise mesoporous thin layers used in electrocatalytic water splitting

Mesoporous materials are needed in many applications where a high specific surface area and adsorptive behaviour is needed. Important examples are separation techniques and barrier layers and catalysts. Electrochemical water splitting is the key technology for producing green hydrogen and there is no foreseeable alternative to this process for producing elementary hydrogen from green electrical power. Water electrolysis can be divided into the anodic Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER) and the cathodic Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER). Both processes have to be heavily optimised to a large extent to avoid energy losses caused by overvoltage. The development of electrodes for these processes is especially difficult due to the many boundary conditions. Water splitting is a catalytic as well as electrochemical process. The contact area between the electrolyte and the electrode must be maximised maintaining the stability of the surface. Side reactions must be suppressed, and effective gas transport must be ensured. The whole process has to be tolerant with respect to temperature, harsh chemical conditions from the electrolyte as well as high current densities.
We present a hybrid analytical method combining several analytical techniques for determining the properties of thin layers of mixed oxides of the general composition Ir:TiOx. These materials are promising candidates for electrocatalytical top coatings of OER electrodes. To lower the costs of the electrolysers, the main goal is to lower the Ir content retaining the system efficiency. The main properties which are hard to determine are the porous volume fraction and the Ir:Ti element ratio. By a combination of electron microscopy, spectroscopic operando ellipsometry, ellipsometric porosimetry, and other techniques, we can determine key features of mesoporous thin layer materials. We aim to develop operando capable techniques used in process monitoring as well as measurement techniques optimised for accuracy. By developing reference materials, we support long term uptake of our methodology. This work can directly be used for optimising electrocatalytic layers and is a good example for the power of hybrid metrology for improving materials design.
Several studies have been shown that the electron beam can be used to create nanomaterials from microparticle targets in situ in a transmission electron microscope (TEM). Here, we show how this method has to be modified in order to synthesize plasmonic gold nanoparticles (NPs) on insulating silicon oxide substrate by employing a scanning electron microscope with a comparatively low acceleration voltage of 30 kV. The synthesized NPs exhibit a random distribution around the initial microparticle target: Their average size reduces from 150 nm to 3 nm with growing distance to the initial Au microparticle target. Similarly, their average distance increases. The synthesized NP assemblies therefore show distinctly different plasmonic behaviour with growing distance to the target, which allows to study consequences of random hybridization of surface plasmon in disordered system, such as Anderson localization. To reveal the surface plasmons and their localization behaviour we apply electron energy loss spectroscopy in the TEM.
Polydopamine (PDA) is a biological / biomimetic polymer which has spiked considerable interest in recent years. Its monomer is an important neurotransmitter and it is one of the strongest glues produced by biological organisms. Polydopamine is a candidate for several applications, mainly in the field of biology and medicine, but also - recently - for layer coatings with optical, electrical, and mechanical function.
In this work, we investigate PDA layers intended as reflectivity enhancers for mirror surfaces in X-ray astronomical observatories. It has previously been shown, that such X-ray telescopes can be improved by a coating of PDA in the thickness range of several nm. Accurate thickness determination is required to monitor and optimise the coating process. We use spectroscopic ellipsometry to determine first the dielectric function of the polydopamine layers using model coatings of sufficient thickness. This data is then used to accurately determine the layer thickness of much thinner PDA layers. This study resulted in data on the thickness and dielectric function of PDA layers that could lead to a better understanding of the correlation of layer thickness and layer properties depending on the process parameters.
The weldability of stainless steels is largely controlled by the chemical composition, and alloys with ferritic or ferritic-austenitic solidification show the highest resistance to hot cracking. As the resulting phase balance also
affects the final properties, it may be beneficial to both foresee and measure the weld metal ferrite content. The WRC ’92 constitution diagram is currently the most accurate prediction tool available, but it does not take the cooling rate into consideration and the precision may be less accurate for stainless steels with high ferrite numbers (FN). This study aims to validate the reliability of the WRC ’92 diagram for weld metals with FN > 50. The chemical composition was altered through gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) of UNS S32205 with ER347 filler wire that had been PVD-coated with either niobium (Nb), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn), carbon (C), or silicon (Si). The actual ferrite content was assessed using image analysis, FERITSCOPE® and X-ray diffraction (XRD). While the WRC ’92 diagram predictions were deemed accurate to acceptable for Ni, Si, and Mn, notable deviations were observed for Nb, Cu, and C. The FeriteScope exhibited a consistent trend with image analysis, though the values were higher, and scatter was wider, and the conversion factor is open for discussion. The lowest accuracy and largest spread were obtained using non-contact XRD, rendering it unsuitable for ferrite measurements of welds.
Der Vortrag gibt eine Übersicht zum Stand des Projekts zum Thema Gefügeveränderung bei trockener Grobbearbeitung. Es wurden vier verschiedene trockene Oberflächenbearbeitungsverfahren an 2 Werkstoffen eingesetzt um Testoberflächen zu schaffen. Die so gefertigten Oberflächen wurden lichtmikroskopisch untersucht und die jeweiligen Rauhigkeitskennwerte bestimmt. Weiterhin wurden metallografische Querschliffe angefertigt um die verfahrens- bzw. materialabhängigen Einflüsse auf mögliche Gefügeveränderungen zu untersuchen. Zusätzlich wurden elektrochemische Polarisationsversuche durchgeführt um die oberflächenspezifische Korrosionsbeständigkeit der nichtrostenden Stahlproben zu quantifizieren.
Since 2016 ISO Technical Committee (TC) 265 is working on standardization the whole CCS-process chain. Around 30 countries are working together to provide international guidelines. As ISO 27913 was the first standard finished within these activities it is already in the stage of first revision.
The objective of ISO 27913 is “to provide specific requirements and recommendations on certain aspects of safe and reliable design, construction and operation of pipelines intended for the large-scale transportation of CO2 that are not already covered in existing pipeline standards such as ISO 13623, ASME B31.8, EN 1594, AS 2885 or other standards. Existing pipeline standards cover many of the issues related to the design and construction of CO2 pipelines; however, there are some CO2 specific issues that are not adequately covered in these standards. The purpose of this document is to cover these issues consistently. Hence, this document is not a standalone standard, but is written to be a supplement to other existing pipeline standards for natural gas or liquids for both onshore and offshore pipelines.”
This contribution shall provide information on the content, the current stage of the revision process, encourage to contribute to this standard and make listeners aware to consider the influence of ISO standard on documents currently in draft.
The overview of the activity of Federal Institute for Material Research and Testing (BAM, Belin, Germany) in the field material characterization by X-ray imaging is presented. The principle of X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT) is explained. The multiple examples of application of quantitative analysis by XCT are reported, such as additive manufacturing, Li-ion battery, concrete research.
Bonds and local atomic environments are crucial descriptors of material properties. They have been used to create design rules and heuristics and as features in machine learning of materials properties. Implementations and algorithms (e.g., ChemEnv and LobsterEnv) for identifying local atomic environments based on geometrical characteristics and quantum-chemical bonding analysis are nowadays available. Fully automatic workflows and analysis tools have been developed to use quantum-chemical bonding analysis on a large scale. The lecture will demonstrate how our tools, that assess local atomic environments and perform automatic bonding analysis, help to develop new machine learning models and a new intuitive understanding of materials. Furthermore, the general trend toward automation in density functional-based materials science and some of our recent contributions will be discussed.
Der Vortrag gibt einen Überblick zu ultrakurzen Laserpulsen, der Ultrakurzpulslaser-Materialbearbeitung und der dabei ggf. auftretenden unerwünschten Röntgenstrahlung. Es wird die Laserbearbeitung von technischen und biologischen Materialien diskutiert. Schutzmöglichkeiten gegenüber der Röntgenstrahlung werden erörtert.
Bei der zerstörungsfreien Prüfung verlegter Eisenbahnschienen werden die Rohdaten derzeit in proprietären Datenformaten gespeichert und auf Datenträgern zwischen den Prüfzügen und den auswertenden Stellen versendet. Die proprietären Datenformate sind in der Regel nur den Herstellern der Prüfsysteme bekannt und deren Dokumentation nicht allgemein zugänglich.
Das Forschungsprojekt „Artificial Intelligence for Rail Inspection“ (AIFRI) erfordert den Austausch von Prüfdaten in einem offenen Format sowohl zwischen den Projektpartnern als auch die Veröffentlichung anonymisierter Daten ausgewählter Strecken aus dem Offenen Digitalen Testfeld (ODT). Wir haben uns in dem Projekt für die Verwendung der „Standard Practice for Digital Imaging and Communication in Nondestructive Evaluation“ (DICONDE) entschieden. DICONDE basiert auf dem medizinischen Standard „Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine“ (DICOM) und wurde von ASTM an die ZfP angepasst. DICOM bzw. DICONDE ist nicht nur ein Datenformat, sondern beinhaltet auch Kommunikationsschnittstellen für die Auftragsvergabe, Datenübertragung und Abfrage gespeicherter Datensätze aus einem Archiv.
In dem Vortrag werden DICOM und DICONDE vorgestellt, sowie die Verwendung von DICONDE für die Schienenprüfung im Projekt AIFRI näher erläutert. Es wird gezeigt, wie sich Prüfdaten, Prüfparameter, Streckeninformationen incl. Kilometertafeln und Geokoordinaten und Befunde in DICONDE kodieren lassen.
Der Vortrag gibt einen Überblick über die vielfältigen Möglichkeiten der Oberflächenfunktionalisierung mittels Mikro- und Nanostrukturierung durch Ultrakurzpuls-Lasermaterialbeabeitung. Dies schließt eine Diskussion des Phänomens der Laser-induzierten periodischen Oberflächenstrukturen (LIPSS, engl.: Laser-induced Periodic Surface Structures, Ripples), sowie deren Klassifikation und Bildungsmechanismen mit ein. Ein Schwerpunkt der Präsentation liegt auf der Diskussion verschiedener Anwendungsmöglichkeiten der LIPSS in Bereichen der Optik, Fluidik, Tribologie und Medizin, sowie auf einem Ausblick auf die industrielle Skalierbarkeit der LIPSS-Technologie.
This presentation highlights ongoing scientific misconduct as found in academic literature. This includes data- and image manipulation, and paper mills. Starting with an expose of examples, it delves deeper into the causes and metrics driving this phenomenon. Finally a range of possible tools is presented, that the young researcher can use to prevent themselves from sliding into the dark scientific methods.

Der Vortrag beschreibt die Bestimmung der spezifischen Oberfläche von dispersen und/oder porösen Pulvern mittels Gasadsorption nach dem BET-Verfahren.
Es wird auf die Anwendbarkeit der Methode eingegangen und es werden praktische Hinweise zur Probenvorbereitung und Messung von Nanomaterialien gegeben.
By automatically recording as much information as possible in automated laboratory setups, reproducibility and traceability of experiments are vastly improved. This presentation shows what such an approach means for the quality of experiments in an X-ray scattering laboratory and an automated synthesis set-up.
Bakterielle Biofilme stellen in medizinischen und industriellen Bereichen ein ernsthaftes Problem dar. Eine der größten gesellschaftlichen Herausforderungen liegt in der zunehmenden Resistenz von Bakterien gegen Biozide, die bei antimikrobiellen Behandlungen eingesetzt werden, z.B. durch übermäßigen Einsatz in Medizin, Industrie und Landwirtschaft oder durch Reinigung und Desinfektion in Privathaushalten. Daher sind neue effiziente bakterienabweisende Strategien, die den Einsatz von Bioziden vermeiden, dringend erforderlich.
Ein vielversprechender Weg zur Erzielung bakterienabweisender Oberflächen liegt in der berührungslosen und aseptischen großflächigen Laserbearbeitung von technischen Oberflächen. Maßgeschneiderte Oberflächentexturen, ermöglicht durch verschiedene Laserbearbeitungsstrategien, die zu topographischen Skalen im Bereich von Nanometern bis Mikrometern führen, können eine Lösung für diese Herausforderung darstellen.
In dem Vortrag wird ein Überblick über den aktuellen Stand der Technik bei der subtraktiven Texturierung von Laseroberflächen zur Kontrolle der Biofilmbildung bei verschiedenen Bakterienstämmen und in unterschiedlichen Umgebungen gegeben. Auf der Grundlage spezifischer Eigenschaften von Bakterien und laserbearbeiteten Oberflächen werden die Herausforderungen antimikrobieller Oberflächendesigns erörtert und zukünftige Richtungen aufgezeigt.
Die Wirbelstromprüfung ist ein bewährtes Verfahren zur zerstörungsfreien Prüfung elektrisch leitfähiger Objekte im oberflächennahen Bereich. Nach einer Einführung in die Wirkungsweise, Möglichkeiten und Grenzen des Wirbelstromprüfverfahrens wird am Beispiel des Schreins der Heiligen Drei Könige gezeigt, wie sich mit dem Wirbelstromprüfverfahren unterschiedliche Metalllegierungen unter einer Vergoldung zerstörungsfrei identifizieren lassen.
Der Schrein der Heiligen Drei Könige wurde um das Jahr 1200 von Nikolaus von Verdun erschaffen, ca. 1750 von Johann Rohr und 1807 von Wilhelm Pollack restauriert. Die Restaurierungsarbeiten wurden jedoch nur unvollständig dokumentiert. Es ist bekannt, dass zu den unterschiedlichen Zeiten unterschiedliche Metalllegierungen als Grundmaterial unter der Vergoldung verwendet wurden. Mit Hilfe von Vergleichsproben aus einer Sammlung der Kölner Dombauverwaltung ließen sich die Akanthus-Prägungen des Schreins den verschiedenen Restaurierungen zuordnen.
Following the new paradigm of materials development, design, and optimization, digitalization is the main goal in materials sciences and engineering (MSE) which imposes a huge challenge. In this respect, the quality assurance of processes and output data as well as the interoperability between applications following FAIR principles are to be ensured. For storage, processing, and querying of data in contextualized form, Semantic Web technologies (SWT) are used since they allow for machine-actionable and human-readable knowledge representations needed for data management, retrieval, and (re)use.
The project ‘platform MaterialDigital’ (PMD, https://materialdigital.de) aims to bring together and support interested parties from both industrial and academic sectors in a sustainable manner in solving digitalization tasks and implementing digital solutions. Therefore, the establishment of a virtual material data space and the systematization of the handling of hierarchical, process-dependent material data are focused. Core points to be dealt with are the development of agreements on data structures and interfaces implemented in distinct software tools and to offer users specific support in their projects. Furthermore, the platform contributes to a standardized description of data processing methods in materials research. In this respect, selected MSE methods are semantically represented which are supposed to serve as best practice examples with respect to knowledge representation and the creation of knowledge graphs used for material data.
Accordingly, this presentation shows the efforts taken within the PMD project towards the digitalization in MSE such as the development of the mid-level PMD core ontology (PMDco, https://github.com/materialdigital/core-ontology). Furthermore, selected results of a PMD partner project use case addressing data and knowledge management from synthesis, production, and characterization of materials are shown.
Der Vortrag gibt einen Überblick über die Erzeugung und Charakterisierung anisotroper Nanostrukturen mittels ultrakurzgepulster Laserstrahlung. Besonderes Augenmerk liegt dabei auf dem Phänomen der sogenannten Laser-induzierten periodischen Oberflächen-Nanostrukturen auf dielektrischen Werkstoffen und ihrer zeitlichen Dynamik. Weitere Beispiele von Volumen-Nanostrukturen aus der Literatur werden diskutiert.
Im Rahmen des 2. BAM-Akademie Info-Tages "Nano or not Nano" wurde die OECD TG 124 "Volume Specific Surface Area of Manufactured Nanomaterials" vorgestellt. Der Vortrag beschreibt detailliert das Messverfahren der He-Gaspyknometrie zur Bestimmung der Skelettdichte von Pulvern und geht auf Anwendbarkeit, Besonderheiten bei Nanopulvern und wichtige Einstellparameter für die Messung ein.
Die Erzeugung rissschließfreier Anrisse in gekerbten bruchmechanischen Proben für anschließende Ermüdungsversuche kann durch eine zyklische Druckbelastung an der Kerbe erfolgen: Bei der Erstbelastung wird eine plastische Verformung an der Kerbspitze erzeugt, welche Zugeigenspannungen und damit eine risstreibende Kraft bei der folgenden zyklischen Druckbelastung hervorruft. Durch das Risswachstum kommt es zu einer Entspannung, bis der Riss schließlich arretiert, weil die effektive risstreibende Kraft auf den Schwellenwert abgesunken ist. Um Kurzrisswachstum in additiv, mittels pulverbettbasiertem Laserstrahlschmelzen (Laser Powder Bed Fusion - LPBF) gefertigtem AISI 316L Stahl und seinem konventionell erzeugten, warmgewalzten Pendant zu untersuchen, wurde dieses Verfahren im Rahmen der vorliegenden Arbeit genutzt. Im Falle des additiv gefertigten Materials kam es zu unerwartet langem Ermüdungsrisswachstum, bevor der Riss arretierte. Zur Ermittlung der Ursache erfolgte eine Messung der Eigenspannungsverteilungen mittels Neutronendiffraktion in der Kerbebene der additiv gefertigten Proben. Anschließend wurde ein Finite-Elemente-Modell zur Simulation des Ermüdungsrisswachstums in konventionellem und additiv gefertigtem Material implementiert. Im Rahmen dieses Vortrages wird insbesondere auf das Vorgehen bei der Simulation und auf die getroffenen Annahmen und Vereinfachungen eingegangen. Die Resultate werden mit den experimentellen Ergebnissen verglichen und das für die Simulation von Risswachstum genutzte Knoten-Freigabe-Verfahren (Node-Release), das Einbringen von Eigenspannungen als initiale Spannungen in der Simulation, und die Rechengrößen zur Quantifizierung der risstreibenden Kraft kritisch diskutiert.
