Carbon dots have attracted much attention due to their unique optical, chemical and electronic properties enabling a wide range of applications. The properties of carbon dots can be effectively adjusted through modifying their chemical composition. However, a major challenge remains in understanding the core and surface contributions to optical and electronic transitions. Here, three blue luminescent carbon dots with carboxyl, amino and hydroxyl groups were comprehensively characterized by UV-vis absorption and emission spectroscopy, synchrotron-based X-ray spectroscopy, and infrared spectroscopy. The influence of the surface functionality on their fluorescence was probed by pH-dependent photoluminescence measurements. Moreover, the hydrogen bonding interactions between water and the surface groups of carbon dots were characterized by infrared spectroscopy. Our results show that both core and surface electronic states of blue luminescent carbon dots contribute to electronic acceptor levels while the chemical nature of the surface groups determines the hydrogen bonding behavior of the carbon dots. This comprehensive spectroscopic study demonstrates that the surface chemistry has a profound influence on the electronic configuration and surface–water interaction of carbon dots, thus affecting their photoluminescence properties.
Photon upconversion nanomaterials have a wide range of applications, including biosensing and deep-tissue imaging. Their typically very weak and narrow absorption bands together with their size dependent luminescence efficiency can limit their application potential. This has been addressed by increasingly sophisticated core-shell particle architectures including the sensitization with organic dyes that strongly absorb in the near infrared (NIR). In this work, we present a simple water-dispersible micellar system that features energy transfer from the novel NIR excitable dye, 1859 SL with a high molar absorption coefficient and a moderate fluorescence quantum yield to oleate-capped NaYF4:20%Yb(III), 2%Er(III) upconversion nanoparticles (UCNP) upon 808 nm excitation. The micelles were formed using the surfactants Pluronic F-127 and Tween 80 to produce a hydrophilic dye-UCNP system. Successful energy transfer from the dye to the UCNP could be confirmed by emission measurements that revealed the occurrence of upconversion emission upon excitation at 808 nm and an enhancement of the green Er(III) emission compared to direct Er(III) excitation at 808 nm.
The shape of the weld pool in laser beam welding plays a major role to understand the dynamics of the melt and its solidification behavior. The aim of the present work was its experimental and numerical investigation. To visualize the geometry of the melt pool in the longitudinal section a butt joint configuration of 15 mm thick structural steel and transparent quartz glass was used. The weld pool shape was recorded by means of a high-speed video camera and two thermal imaging MWIR and VIS cameras. The observations show that the dimensions of the weld pool vary depending on the depth. The regions close to the surface form a teardrop shaped weld pool. A bulge-region and its temporal evolution were observed approximately in the middle of the depth of the weld pool. Additionally, a transient numerical simulation was performed until reaching a steady state to obtain the weld pool shape and to understand the formation mechanism of the observed bulging phenomena. A fixed keyhole with an experimentally obtained shape was used to represent the full-penetration laser beam welding process. The model considers the local temperature field, the effects of phase transition, thermo-capillary convection, natural convection and temperature-dependent material properties up to evaporation temperature. It was found that the Marangoni convection and the movement of the laser heat source are the dominant factors for the formation of the bulging-region. Good correlation between the numerically calculated and the experimentally observed weld bead shapes and the time-temperature curves on the upper and bottom surface were found.
In this paper we report on the characterization by X-ray computed tomography of calcium phosphate (CaP) and polycaprolactone (PCL) coatings on Ti-6Al-4V alloy scaffolds used as a material for medical implants. The cylindrical scaffold has greater porosity of the inner part than the external part, thus, mimicking trabecular and cortical bone, respectively. The prismatic scaffolds have uniform porosity. Surface of the scaffolds was modified with calcium phosphate (CaP) and polycaprolactone (PCL) by dip-coating to improve biocompatibility and mechanical properties. Computed tomography performed with X-ray and synchrotron radiation revealed the defects of structure and morphology of CaP and PCL coatings showing small platelet-like and spider-web-like structures, respectively.

Modelling of environmentally assisted material degradation in the crack phase-field framework
(2019)
The simulation of crack propagation was conducted with a diffusive crack model in a variational framework. Moreover, the physically sound introduction of mass transport and coupling mechanisms due to environmentally assisted effects could be realised in this framework. The objective consists of the application of the phase-field Approach towards the simulation of environmentally assisted material degradation with the advantage of a non-required predefined crack path and a mesh-independent non-local formulation that facilitates the damage evolution with respect to material softening. The sharp crack is regularised by the introduction of a phase-field order parameter leading to a diffusive crack formulation.
Besides the equations originating from the linear momentum balance an additional evolution equation for the crack phase-field is introduced. Furthermore, mass transport is simulated by a Diffusion equation. The description delivered by the variational phase-field framework is able to simulate crack propagation according to published numerical test cases.
Additionally, the calculation of stress intensity factors is possible as well as crack resistance curves that describe stable crack propagation.
Water migration in one-side heated concrete: 4D in-situ CT monitoring of the moisture-clog-effect
(2019)
Explosive spalling due to fire exposure in concrete structures can lead severe damage and, in the worst case, to premature component failure. For this reason, an in situ investigation of water Migration in concrete due to surface heating was undertaken.
During these experiments, a miniaturized concrete specimen within a confining and insulating double-hull was subjected to surface heating during simultaneous X-ray computed tomography (CT) scanning. Through the use of subtraction-based Image analysis techniques, it was possible to observe and quantify not only drying within areas of the concrete matrix close to the heated surface, but also the migration of moisture to both pore and matrix regions deeper within the specimen. It was also discovered that the correction of CT images for specimen deformation using DVC and variable detector performance using calibrated image filters significantly improved the quality of the results. This clearly demonstrates the potential of X-ray CT for evaluation of other rapid-density-change phenomena in concrete and other building materials.
The paper focuses on the reformulation of classic Maxwell's (1873) homogenization method for calculation of the residual stresses in matrix composites. For this goal, we equate the far fields produced by a set of inhomogeneities subjected to known eigenstrains and by a fictitious domain with unknown eigenstrain. The effect of interaction between the inhomogeneities is reduced to the calculation of the additional field acting on an inhomogeneity due to the eigenstrains in its neighbors. An explicit formula for residual stresses is derived for the general case of a multiphase composite. The method is illustrated by several examples. The results are compared with available experimental data as well as with predictions provided by the non-interaction approximation (Eshelby solution). It is shown that accounting for interaction can explain many experimentally observed phenomena and is required for adequate quantitative analytical modeling of the residual stresses in matrix composites.
Three-dimensional (3D) γ-MnO2@ZnFe2O4/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanohybrids were synthesized using a one-pot hydrothermal self-assembly method. The morphology and properties of the nanohybrids were investigated.
The synergistic interactions among γ-MnO2, ZnFe2O4, and rGO resulted in 3D nanoflakes distributed uniformly in the rGO structure with a thickness of approximately 2–5 nm, leading to a high surface area. The nanohybrid containing 10 wt. % rGO exhibited superior catalytic activities for phenol degradation through the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to generate active sulfate radicals (SO4 •–). Typically, 50 mL of a 20 ppm phenol solution was degraded completely and 85% of the carbon content had been mineralized in 30 min at 25 °C using 10 mg of the nanohybrid. The nanohybrid could be recovered easily using a magnet and reused, maintaining high stability during catalytic oxidation. The 3D γ-MnO2@ZnFe2O4/rGO nanohybrid catalyst could be applied to the removal of hard-to-degrade waste materials owing to its high efficiency and excellent reusability.
While the volumetric energy density is commonly used to qualify a process parameter set, and to quantify its influence on the microstructure and performance of additively manufactured (AM) materials and components, it has been already shown that this description is by no means exhaustive. In this work, new aspects of the optimization of the selective laser melting process are investigated for AM Ti-6Al-4V. We focus on the amount of near-surface residual stress (RS), often blamed for the failure of components, and on the porosity characteristics (amount and spatial distribution). First, using synchrotron x-ray diffraction we show that higher RS in the subsurface region is generated if a lower energy density is used. Second, we show that laser de-focusing and sample positioning inside the build chamber also play an eminent role, and we quantify this influence. In parallel, using X-ray Computed Tomography, we observe that porosity is mainly concentrated in the contour region, except in the case where the laser speed is small. The low values of porosity (less than 1%) do not influence RS.
The structural and thermoelectric properties of Na- and Ag-substituted CoO dense ceramics have been investigated. X-ray diffraction shows that pure phase and Ag/CoO composites have been obtained for Na-doped and Ag-doped CoO, respectively. Raman spectroscopy shows an effect of Na dopants on the lattice disorder of CoO. The chemical composition, element distribution, and valence states of the samples have been characterized by Auger electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Substitution of Co by 5 at. % Na enhances the power factor to 250 μWm−1 K-2 at 1000 K, similar to that of Ca3Co4O9. The corresponding thermal conductivity is also reduced to 3.55 W.m−1 K−1 at 1000 K. Consequently, Co0.95Na0.05O exhibits the best thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT), which is 0.07 at 1000 K. On the other hand, the substitution of Ag into CoO leads to the formation of CoO/Ag composites and deteriorates ZT values.
AISI D2 is one of the most applied cold-working tool steel for deep drawing operations, due to the materials good toughness and high wear resistance. However, since the lubricant-free deep drawing as well as the processing of high strength and ultra-high strength steel sheets remaining ongoing trends in the automotive industry, the tool surfaces need to be improved regarding their friction and wear behavior. For this purpose elevated micro textures can be applied. Since protruded micro features are predominantly affected by wear, a structuring process enabling the formation of suitable textures with high wear resistance is needed.
In this paper surface texturing at microscale was conducted by laser implantation. This technique allows the fabrication of highly wear resistant, separated and elevated features (implants) on steel surfaces via a discontinuous dispersing of ceramic particles by pulsed laser radiation. The aim of this study was to investigate the techniques potential for the creation of wear resistant elevated micro features on AISI D2 tool steel surfaces by the application of TiB2 particles. The laser parameters (pulse power and length) were varied and a comparative material analysis on AISI D2 laser remelted spots and TiB2 localized dispersed zones was examined. High-speed camera recordings allowed the description of the particle insertion mechanism from pre-coatings during laser processing. Mechanical properties were analyzed by (micro-) hardness measurements at top and cross sections. The microstructure was investigated by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive Xray
spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The implants geometrical properties (diameter, height, depth) were investigated by white light interferometry and optical microscopy. The experiments reveal that a pulsed laser remelting of AISI D2 leads to a significant hardness drop due to high retained austenite (γR) contents. Contrary, a localized dispersing of TiB2 particles leads to defect free dome- or ring-shaped elevated features with hardness values up to 1800 HV1. The high hardness values result from the dispersed TiB2 particles and an in-situ precipitation of new hard particle phases, which lead to a reduction of the γR content within the matrix.
The elemental dissolution of Cu-Zn alloys was investigated as a function of Zn content ranging from 0 to 45 wt%. Atomic emission spectroelectrochemistry (AESEC) was utilized to directly monitor Cu2+ and Zn2+ release and oxide growth as function of time during potentiodynamic experiments. It was determined that Cu dissolution undergoes a simultaneous mechanism of Cu2O formation and Cu2+ release. The addition of Zn in Cu-Zn alloy does not measurably change the dissolution mechanism of Cu2+ and the rate of aqueous Cu2+ was only dependent on the potential. Zn dissolution was however blocked by the formation of a Cu(0) film which shifted the Zn dissolution in the anodic direction.
