By automatically recording as much information as possible in automated laboratory setups, reproducibility and traceability of experiments are vastly improved. This presentation shows what such an approach means for the quality of experiments in an X-ray scattering laboratory and an automated synthesis set-up.
This presentation highlights ongoing scientific misconduct as found in academic literature. This includes data- and image manipulation, and paper mills. Starting with an expose of examples, it delves deeper into the causes and metrics driving this phenomenon. Finally a range of possible tools is presented, that the young researcher can use to prevent themselves from sliding into the dark scientific methods.

Several studies have been shown that the electron beam can be used to create nanomaterials from microparticle targets in situ in a transmission electron microscope (TEM). Here, we show how this method has to be modified in order to synthesize plasmonic gold nanoparticles (NPs) on insulating silicon oxide substrate by employing a scanning electron microscope with a comparatively low acceleration voltage of 30 kV. The synthesized NPs exhibit a random distribution around the initial microparticle target: Their average size reduces from 150 nm to 3 nm with growing distance to the initial Au microparticle target. Similarly, their average distance increases. The synthesized NP assemblies therefore show distinctly different plasmonic behaviour with growing distance to the target, which allows to study consequences of random hybridization of surface plasmon in disordered system, such as Anderson localization. To reveal the surface plasmons and their localization behaviour we apply electron energy loss spectroscopy in the TEM.
Ground Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag (GGBFS), a by-product of the iron-making process, has gained significant attention as a supplementary cementitious material and has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its remarkable properties. GGBFS can significantly reduce the environmental impact of cement production when it comes to building concrete structures. GGBFS can either be blended with ordinary Portland cement (OPC) (up to a 90% replacement), or it can be used in the production of alkali-activated materials (AAMs). However, a comprehensive understanding of the pore solution composition is necessary for understanding various aspects of cementitious materials and their durability, including corrosion behavior, passivation of steel, and resistance to deteriorative processes. In the present work, the pore solutions of seven different GGBFS-containing cements (alkali-activated slag, alkali-activated slag/fly ash blends, a hybrid alkaline cement, CEM III/C, and CEM III/B) were extracted and analysed by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy, ion chromatography, pH, redox potential, and conductivity measurements. For comparison, a Portland cement pore solution was analysed similarly. The Concentrations of reduced sulfur were noteworthy in all GGBFS-containing cements, particularly in alkali-activated cements, where concentrations were notably higher compared to standard cements. The redox potentials of the pore solutions were primarily dictated by the concentrations of reduced sulfur, although other factors may contribute. Additionally, sulfur species in the pore solutions had an impact on pH, electrical conductivity, and other properties pertinent to the corrosion of reinforcements.
The heat-resistant cast iron EN-GJSA-XNiSiCr35-5-2 (Ni-Resist D-5S) was investigated for its fatigue crack growth behavior at room and high temperatures. Force-controlled tests were carried out at constant temperatures (20 °C, 500 °C, 700 °C) without and with hold time and different load ratios. The crack growth behavior was also characterized under TMF loading (Tmin = 400 °C, Tmax = 700 °C) by applying IP and OP conditions and different load ratios. Three different techniques were combined to monitor crack growth: potential drop, thermography, and compliance method. The effect of the different loading conditions on the fatigue crack growth behavior will be presented and discussed.
Interactions between a polymer and a substrate interface play a vital role in understanding the improvement in thin film material properties as well as serving as a model for nanocomposites. For any non-repulsive polymer-substrate interactions, polymer segments form an irreversibly adsorbed layer and show a slowdown in the glassy dynamics and thus an increase in the thermal glass transition temperature compared to the bulk-like values. The growth kinetics of the adsorbed layer showed a deviation for both poly (bisphenol-A carbonate) (PBAC) and polysulfone (PSU), two bulky polymers containing a functional group (phenyl ring) in the backbone, compared to conventional polymers previously studied like poly-2-vinyl pyridine (P2VP). This deviation was attributed to the bulkiness of the phenyl rings. . Further investigations into the influence of the adsorbed layer on glassy dynamics were conducted. The molecular mobility and glass transition for thin films of PBAC and PSU were compared to bulk samples of each polymer. Broadband dielectric spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and ellipsometry were primarily used and additionally supported by sum frequency generation spectroscopy.
Since 2016 ISO Technical Committee (TC) 265 is working on standardization the whole CCS-process chain. Around 30 countries are working together to provide international guidelines. As ISO 27913 was the first standard finished within these activities it is already in the stage of first revision.
The objective of ISO 27913 is “to provide specific requirements and recommendations on certain aspects of safe and reliable design, construction and operation of pipelines intended for the large-scale transportation of CO2 that are not already covered in existing pipeline standards such as ISO 13623, ASME B31.8, EN 1594, AS 2885 or other standards. Existing pipeline standards cover many of the issues related to the design and construction of CO2 pipelines; however, there are some CO2 specific issues that are not adequately covered in these standards. The purpose of this document is to cover these issues consistently. Hence, this document is not a standalone standard, but is written to be a supplement to other existing pipeline standards for natural gas or liquids for both onshore and offshore pipelines.”
This contribution shall provide information on the content, the current stage of the revision process, encourage to contribute to this standard and make listeners aware to consider the influence of ISO standard on documents currently in draft.
The weldability of stainless steels is largely controlled by the chemical composition, and alloys with ferritic or ferritic-austenitic solidification show the highest resistance to hot cracking. As the resulting phase balance also
affects the final properties, it may be beneficial to both foresee and measure the weld metal ferrite content. The WRC ’92 constitution diagram is currently the most accurate prediction tool available, but it does not take the cooling rate into consideration and the precision may be less accurate for stainless steels with high ferrite numbers (FN). This study aims to validate the reliability of the WRC ’92 diagram for weld metals with FN > 50. The chemical composition was altered through gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) of UNS S32205 with ER347 filler wire that had been PVD-coated with either niobium (Nb), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), manganese (Mn), carbon (C), or silicon (Si). The actual ferrite content was assessed using image analysis, FERITSCOPE® and X-ray diffraction (XRD). While the WRC ’92 diagram predictions were deemed accurate to acceptable for Ni, Si, and Mn, notable deviations were observed for Nb, Cu, and C. The FeriteScope exhibited a consistent trend with image analysis, though the values were higher, and scatter was wider, and the conversion factor is open for discussion. The lowest accuracy and largest spread were obtained using non-contact XRD, rendering it unsuitable for ferrite measurements of welds.
New analytic ways to characterise mesoporous thin layers used in electrocatalytic water splitting
(2024)
Mesoporous materials are needed in many applications where a high specific surface area and adsorptive behaviour is needed. Important examples are separation techniques and barrier layers and catalysts. Electrochemical water splitting is the key technology for producing green hydrogen and there is no foreseeable alternative to this process for producing elementary hydrogen from green electrical power. Water electrolysis can be divided into the anodic Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER) and the cathodic Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER). Both processes have to be heavily optimised to a large extent to avoid energy losses caused by overvoltage. The development of electrodes for these processes is especially difficult due to the many boundary conditions. Water splitting is a catalytic as well as electrochemical process. The contact area between the electrolyte and the electrode must be maximised maintaining the stability of the surface. Side reactions must be suppressed, and effective gas transport must be ensured. The whole process has to be tolerant with respect to temperature, harsh chemical conditions from the electrolyte as well as high current densities.
We present a hybrid analytical method combining several analytical techniques for determining the properties of thin layers of mixed oxides of the general composition Ir:TiOx. These materials are promising candidates for electrocatalytical top coatings of OER electrodes. To lower the costs of the electrolysers, the main goal is to lower the Ir content retaining the system efficiency. The main properties which are hard to determine are the porous volume fraction and the Ir:Ti element ratio. By a combination of electron microscopy, spectroscopic operando ellipsometry, ellipsometric porosimetry, and other techniques, we can determine key features of mesoporous thin layer materials. We aim to develop operando capable techniques used in process monitoring as well as measurement techniques optimised for accuracy. By developing reference materials, we support long term uptake of our methodology. This work can directly be used for optimising electrocatalytic layers and is a good example for the power of hybrid metrology for improving materials design.
Polydopamine (PDA) is a biological / biomimetic polymer which has spiked considerable interest in recent years. Its monomer is an important neurotransmitter and it is one of the strongest glues produced by biological organisms. Polydopamine is a candidate for several applications, mainly in the field of biology and medicine, but also - recently - for layer coatings with optical, electrical, and mechanical function.
In this work, we investigate PDA layers intended as reflectivity enhancers for mirror surfaces in X-ray astronomical observatories. It has previously been shown, that such X-ray telescopes can be improved by a coating of PDA in the thickness range of several nm. Accurate thickness determination is required to monitor and optimise the coating process. We use spectroscopic ellipsometry to determine first the dielectric function of the polydopamine layers using model coatings of sufficient thickness. This data is then used to accurately determine the layer thickness of much thinner PDA layers. This study resulted in data on the thickness and dielectric function of PDA layers that could lead to a better understanding of the correlation of layer thickness and layer properties depending on the process parameters.

Calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CaSO4ᐧ0.5H2O), also known as bassanite, has been used as a precursor to produce gypsum (dihydrate, CaSO4ᐧ2H2O) for various construction and decorative purposes since prehistoric times. The main route to obtain hemihydrate is a thermal treatment of gypsum at temperatures typically between 150 °C and 200 °C to remove some of the structural water.
In this contribution, we introduce (Fig. 1) a more efficient and sustainable method (T < 100 °C) that enables the direct, rapid, and reversibly conversion of gypsum to bassanite using reusable high salinity aqueous solutions (brines with c[NaCl] > 4 M). The optimum conditions for the efficientproduction of bassanite in a short time (< 5 min) involve the use of brines with c(NaCl) > 4 M and maintaining a temperature, T > 80 °C. When the solution containing bassanite crystals is cooled down to around room temperature, eventually gypsum is formed. When the temperature is raised again to T > 80 °C, bassanite is rapidly re-precipitated. This contrasts with the typical behaviour of the bassanite phase in low salt environments.
Traditionally, hemihydrate is obtained through a solid state thermal treatment because bassanite is considered to be metastable with respect to gypsum and anhydrite in aqueous solutions, and therefore gypsum-to-bassanite conversion should not occur in water. Its very occurrence actually contradicts numerical thermodynamic predictions regarding solubility of calcium sulfate phases. By following the evolution of crystalline phases with in situ and time-resolved X-ray diffraction/scattering and Raman spectroscopy, we demonstrated that the phase stability in brines at elevated temperatures is inaccurately represented in the thermodynamic databases. Most notably for c(NaCl) > 4 M, and T > 80 °C gypsum becomes readily more soluble than bassanite, which induces the direct precipitation of the latter from gypsum. The fact that these transformations are controlled by the solution provides extensive opportunities for precise manipulation of crystal formation. Our experiments confirmed that bassanite remained the sole crystalline structure for many hours before reverting into gypsum. This property is extremely advantageous for practical processing and efficient crystal extraction in industrial scenarios.
Optical biosensors often show remarkable performance and can be configured in many ways for sensitive, selective, and rapid measurements. However, the high-quality and advanced optical assemblies required to read out the sensor signals, for example, Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence (TIRF) or Supercritical Angle Fluorescence (SAF) microscopy, which necessitate complex and expensive optical elements. Particularly in optical method development, researchers or developers are often confronted with limitations because conventional manufacturing processes for optical elements can be restrictive in terms of design, material, time, and cost. Modern and high-resolution 3D printing techniques make it possible to overcome these challenges and enable the fabrication of individualized and personalized free-form optical components, which can reduce costs and significantly shorten the prototyping timeline—from months to hours. In this work, we use a modern, high-resolution (< 22 µm) commercial Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)-based 3D printer, for which we spectroscopically and physically characterized commercial photo-resins printable with the LCD technique in the first step (Figure 1). The aim was not only to produce a printed element with a high surface quality that mitigates the inner filter effects caused by attenuation (high optical density (OD) due to reflection and scattering), but also to select a material with a high refractive index (RI>1.5) and high transmission values (>90% transmittance) in the visible to near-infrared spectral range (approx. 450 – 900 nm) that exhibits little or no autofluorescence. Using a selection of suitable resins, lenses and free-form optical elements were manufactured for comparison with standard glass or plastic counterparts.

Manipulating ceramic powder compacts and ceramic suspensions (slurries) within their volume with light requires a minimum transparency of the materials. Compared to polymers and metals, ceramic materials are unique as they offer a wide electronic band gap and thus a wide optical window of transparency. The optical window typically ranges from below 0.3 µm up to 5µm wavelength. Hence, to penetrate with light into the volume of a ceramic powder compound, its light scattering properties need to be investigated and tailored. In the present study we introduce the physical background and material development strategies to apply two-photon-polymerization (2PP), and other volumetric methods for the additive manufacture of filigree structures within the volume of ceramic slurries.
This study aims to represent an approach for transferring the materials testing datasets to the digital schema that meets the prerequisites of the semantic web. As a use case, the tensile stress relaxation testing method was evaluated and the testing datasets for several copper alloys were prepared. The tensile stress relaxation testing ontology (TSRTO) was modeled following the test standard requirements and by utilizing the appropriate upper-level ontologies. Eventually, mapping the testing datasets into the knowledge graph and converting the data-mapped graphs to the machine-readable Resource Description Framework (RDF) schema led to the preparation of the digital version of testing data which can be efficiently queried on the web.
An Amorphous Lewis-acidic Zirconium Chlorofluoride as HF Shuttle: C-F Bond Activation and Formation
(2024)
In recent years, fluorine chemistry has gained increasing political attention. Owing to a growing shortage of fluorspar, a raw material used for producing fluorinated base chemicals, fluorospar has been named among the 30 critical raw materials in the EU.2 As such, it becomes increasingly important to recycle existing fluorinated compounds and make them available as sources of fluorine for reactions. Significant progress has been made in the field of C-F bond activation using heterogeneous catalysts such as aluminum chlorofluoride (ACF).3–5 However, the transfer of fluorine atoms from one molecule to another using heterogeneous catalysts has not yet been reported. In this study, we successfully synthesized amorphous zirconium chlorofluoride (ZCF), and we were able to establish a catalytic behavior of ZCF in C-F bond activation reactions. We present a heterogeneous catalyst that performs dehydrofluorination of a fluoroalkane and consecutive hydrofluorination of an alkyne at room temperature.
In this presentation, the results of the determination of the diffraction and single-crystal elastic constants of laser powder bed fused Inconel 718 are presented. The analysis is based on high-energy synchrotron diffraction experiments performed at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron. It is shown that the characteristic microstructure of laser powder bed fused Inconel 718 impacts the elastic anisotropy and therefore the diffraction and single-crystal elastic constants. Finally, the consequences on the diffraction-based residual stress determination of laser powder bed fused Inconel 718 are discussed.
Following the new paradigm of materials development, design, and optimization, digitalization is the main goal in materials sciences and engineering (MSE) which imposes a huge challenge. In this respect, the quality assurance of processes and output data as well as the interoperability between applications following FAIR principles are to be ensured. For storage, processing, and querying of data in contextualized form, Semantic Web technologies (SWT) are used since they allow for machine-actionable and human-readable knowledge representations needed for data management, retrieval, and (re)use.
The project ‘platform MaterialDigital’ (PMD, https://materialdigital.de) aims to bring together and support interested parties from both industrial and academic sectors in a sustainable manner in solving digitalization tasks and implementing digital solutions. Therefore, the establishment of a virtual material data space and the systematization of the handling of hierarchical, process-dependent material data are focused. Core points to be dealt with are the development of agreements on data structures and interfaces implemented in distinct software tools and to offer users specific support in their projects. Furthermore, the platform contributes to a standardized description of data processing methods in materials research. In this respect, selected MSE methods are semantically represented which are supposed to serve as best practice examples with respect to knowledge representation and the creation of knowledge graphs used for material data.
Accordingly, this presentation shows the efforts taken within the PMD project towards the digitalization in MSE such as the development of the mid-level PMD core ontology (PMDco, https://github.com/materialdigital/core-ontology). Furthermore, selected results of a PMD partner project use case addressing data and knowledge management from synthesis, production, and characterization of materials are shown.
This contribution presents the results of an experimental study on the LCF behavior of an austenitic 316L stainless steel produced by laser powder bed fusion featuring a low defect population, which allows for an improved understanding of the role of other typical aspects of a PBF‑LB microstructure. The LCF tests were performed between room temperature and 600 °C. A hot‑rolled 316L variant was tested as a reference. The mechanical response is characterized by strain-life curves, a Coffin‑Manson‑Basquin fitting, and cyclic deformation curves. The damage and deformation mechanisms are studied with X-ray computed tomography, optical and electron microscopy. The PBF‑LB/M/316L exhibits lower fatigue lives at lower strain amplitudes. The crack propagation is mainly transgranular. The solidification cellular structure seems to be the most relevant underlying microstructural feature determining the cyclic deformation behavior.
Gas turbine components, made of nickel-based alloys, undergo material damage due to high temperatures and mechanical stresses. These components need periodic replacement to avoid efficiency loss and failure. Repair of these parts is more cost-effective than replacement. State-of-the-art repair technologies, including different additive manufacturing (AM) and brazing processes, are considered for efficient restoration. Materials properties mismatches and/or internal defects in repaired parts may expedite crack initiation and propagation, reducing fatigue life. To understand the crack growth behavior in joining zones and predict the remaining life of repaired components, fatigue crack growth (FCG) tests were conducted on specimens of nickel-based alloys joined via brazing, pre-sintered preforms and AM. The FCG experimental technique was successfully adapted for joined specimens and results indicate that the investigated braze material provides a lower resistance to crack growth. In AM-sandwich specimens, the crack growth rates are significantly reduced at the interface of AM and cast material.
The Laser-Induced Slip Casting is an additive manufacturing technology specifically developed for ceramic materials using water-based ceramic slurries. The process takes place layer-by-layer in a similar fashion as top-down vat photopolymerization, selectively consolidating each layer by means of a laser energy source positioned on the top. Contrary to vat photopolymerization, in which the consolidation is achieved by selectively cross-linking a ceramic-filled resin, LIS uses water-based slurries with a low amount of organic additives (typically < 5 wt%) as feedstocks.
In LIS, a green body is formed by local evaporation of water which causes the suspension to collapse forming a cast, following a mechanism similar to slip casting. Only a small content of organic additives is needed to effectively disperse the ceramic particles and to increase the green strength.
The technology is very versatile and can be applied to all ceramic systems that can be dispersed in water. One of the main advantages is that even dark materials such as silicon carbide can be processed without issues related to light scattering and absorption.
The presentation will discuss strengths and limitations of LIS compared to other AM technologies and will highlight the latest results for alumina and for silicon carbide ceramics.
Powder bed technologies are amongst the most successful Additive Manufacturing (AM) techniques. The application of these techniques to most ceramics has been difficult so far, because of the challenges related to the deposition of homogeneous powder layers when using fine powders.
In this context, the "layerwise slurry deposition" (LSD) has been developed as a layer deposition method enabling the use of powder bed AM technologies also for advanced ceramic materials. The layerwise slurry deposition consists of the layer-by-layer deposition of a ceramic slurry by means of a doctor blade, in which the slurry is deposited and dried to achieve a highly packed powder. Not only very fine, submicron powders can be processed with low organics, but also the dense powder bed provides excellent support to the parts built. The LSD technology can be combined with binder jetting to develop the so-called “LSD-print” process. LSD-print combines the high-speed printing of binder jetting with the possibility of producing a variety of high-quality ceramics with properties comparable to traditional processing.
The latest development of this technology shows that it is possible to print ceramic parts in a continuous process by depositing a layer onto a rotating platform, growing a powder bed following a spiral motion. The unique mechanical stability of the layers in LSD-print allows to grow a powder bed several centimeters thick without any lateral support. The continuous layer deposition allows to achieve a productivity more than 10X higher compared to the linear deposition, approaching a build volume of 1 liter/hour.
This paper explores combining a gimbal-mounted tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) sensor and a video camera to create a virtual gas camera for methane leak detection. This provides a low-to-zero-cost extension of typical TDLAS gas tomography systems. A prototype setup mounted on a ground robot is evaluated. Results acquired using a simulated methane leak show the feasibility of the virtual gas camera, accurately detecting methane leaks by overlaying concentrations onto a visual image. While the acquisition time is significantly longer than for traditional gas cameras, potential enhancements are discussed. The study concludes that the virtual gas camera is feasible and useful, despite its longer acquisition time. It serves as a valuable software-only addition to typical TDLAS gas tomography systems, offering quickly-available on-site data augmentation for visual leak assessment at low-to-zero cost.
This study explores the acceleration of material design in the concrete industry, focusing on improving carbonation resistance, a key factor in the durability of concrete structures. Traditional tests for carbonation resistance are lengthy, but with the construction industry aiming for sustainable production, finding a balance between carbonation resistance and CO2 footprint is crucial. Our research employs two innovative methods: 1. Applying the Sequential Learning App for Materials Discovery (SLAMD), an AI materials design framework, to an extensive dataset of real-world concrete compositions to selectively test materials that meet market demands: maximum durability, optimal eco-durability, and the best cost-durability trade-off. 2. Investigating 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) relaxometry as a quick alternative for characterizing carbonation behavior, as it saves time compared to traditional tests and assesses the complete material's pore space. Specific NMR features are then integrated into the material design model, with the model's performance compared against traditional approaches. The results of our study are compelling, demonstrating that materials can be precisely tailored to meet specific requirements with minimal data points. This marks a significant stride in the concrete industry, indicating that NMR-based, low-fidelity surrogate characterizations, combined with a focused, data-driven design approach, can substantially accelerate the development of durable, sustainable concrete mixtures.
Traceable morphological and chemical characterization of nanomaterials with respect to the various possible sizes, size distributions, shapes, and concentrations of real-world nanoparticles (NPs) is a challenging task. Particularly for the nonspherical, non-monodisperse nanoparticles – as typically for most of the commercial particles, including their strong tendency to agglomerate, there is a lack of standard operation procedures providing accurate nanoparticle characterisation.
In the framework of the pre-standardisation framework of VAMAS (Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards, www.vamas.org) two interlaboratory comparison (ILC) studies are being carried out under the Technical Working Area (TWA) 34 “Nanoparticle Populations”:i) Project #15 addresses the analysis of the size and shape distribution of TiO2 bipyramidal NPs by traceable imaging methods such as TEM, SEM, STEM-in-SEM, AFM as well as with SAXS as an ensemble method. This ILC is thought as the next level development of the case studies exemplified in the published ISO standards ISO 21363 and ISO 19749. It was agreed to complete the first ILC with the NPs already prepared according to the same procedure on a TEM grid, and, at a later stage, to carry out second ILCs with the same NPs distributed to the participants as liquid suspensions together with protocols for the uniform NP deposition on suited substrates - as developed and optimized within the European project nPSize. Once having good deposition protocols available, the door for automated image analysis gets opened. Corresponding image analysis protocols and reporting templates have been distributed to the ILC participants, too.
ii) Project #16: two spherical SiO2 NP samples with bi-modal size distributions in two nominal relative number concentrations were prepared and distributed also as liquid suspensions accompanied by sample preparation, measurement, and image analysis protocols and reporting templates. Here, the NP concentration is the primary parameter to be measured. For the imaging methods it is targeted to
measure the relative nanoparticle concentrations (relative populations of the two modes).
The results of all the participating laboratories, in both ILCs, compiled in comparative representations will be shown and discussed for the first time. The reduction of the measurement uncertainties associated to the size, shape and number-concentration results induced by the significant improvement of the sample preparation on substrates (as single particles with a high-density coverage), combined with welldefined image analysis procedures will be highlighted.
Morphological and chemical analysis of mesoporous mixed IrOx-TiOy thin films as electrode materials
(2024)
Porous films play an important role particularly in energy applications like photovoltaics, electrolysis or batteries. Thin film properties such as thickness, chemical composition, crystallinity of the framework, and porosity define the activity of the porous films. The accurate morpho-chemical characterisation of mesoporous thin films is a challenging analytical task which requires the consideration of new analytical approaches based on the combination of data of different methods able to address the structure and chemical composition at the nanoscale. In this contribution we characterise thin mesoporous iridium-titanium mixed oxide film properties by Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA) with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) at an SEM applied in a dedicated “thin film analysis” approach (1). Thus, the film mass deposition, film thickness and the film density can be determined. Further, by dividing the measured film density to an assumed (theoretical) metal oxide framework (skeletal) density, the thin film porosity can be extracted, too.
In order to assess the homogeneity of the thin film properties like the chemical composition, Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and Auger Electron Spectrometry are applied in the depth profiling mode, so that possible in-depth gradients are detected. Lateral inhomogeneities in the chemical composition and structure of the thin mesoporous films are also identified by applying the same methods in the line-scan or mapping mode, which can be further combined with in-depth sputtering for 3D information. The role of the spatial resolution of the analytical methods considered, which can go down well below 100 nm, will be highlighted.
To address the challenges of the climate crisis, multiple solutions for sustainable energy sources and storage systems are needed. One such solution is lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Currently, 5 to 30 % of LIBs are discarded immediately after manufacturing. The homogeneous distribution of all materials used in the coating of cathodes and anodes is critical for the quality of LIBs. Furthermore, during formation i.e., the first steps of the charge/discharge cycling, the solid-electrolyte interphase forms on the anode particles, which has a huge impact on the performance. The same happens to some extent on the cathode, forming the cathode-electrolyte interphase. Fluorinated polymers and electrolytes are used in the manufacturing of LIBs. The electrolyte in particular is prone to degradation during formation and aging of the batteries. The interface of the cathode material with the aluminum current collector is also a critical point where degraded fluorine components cause pitting corrosion and at the same time promote passivation of the metal foil. Monitoring the spatial distribution of fluorine on these surfaces and interfaces is essential for sustainable LIB production.
The combination of high corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties of duplex steels (DSS) is due to their chemical composition and the balanced phase ratio of ferrite (α) and austenite (γ).
Many industrial applications require a material joint of DSS. Tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding is relatively easy to use, requires little space and allows automated welding, with very high reproducibility and is therefore excellent for welding DSS.
During solidification of these steels, critical phase ratios of α and γ can occur, leading to solidification cracking, susceptibility to corrosion, lower ductility, and critical strength values. Therefore, to obtain the desired material properties, the α/γ distribution must be reliably predicted. This is usually done using the WRC1992 diagram. However, the prediction accuracy of the ferrite content in this diagram is usually not accurate enough and must therefore be optimized. It is therefore necessary to monitor even the smallest changes in the chemical composition of the weld metal, ideally during welding. This is done in these experiments using Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS). A major advantage of this technique is the highly accurate time- and spatially-resolved measurement of chemical composition during welding. Previous work has quantified the chemical composition in the weld metal and heat affected zone. In the presented study, the influence of individual elements, such as Nb and Cu, on the resulting weld microstructure is investigated.

Large scale hydrogen assisted cracking test for thick walled SAW joints for offshore applications
(2023)
Offshore wind turbines continuously increase in size and weight and demand adequate offshore foundations concepts like monopiles, tripods or jackets. These components are typically submerged arc welded (SAW) high-strength thick steel plates like the S420ML. During welding, the occurrence of delayed hydrogen assisted cracking (HAC) must be anticipated. HAC is a critical combination of the local hydrogen concentration within a susceptible microstructure under certain mechanical load, i.e., the occurring (welding) residual stresses. The welding sequence of the thick-walled plates complicate the residual stress distribution due to the necessary repeated thermal cycling, i.e., welding seam / layer deposition to fill the joint. For that purpose, SAW with two-wire-technique was used to weld a specially designed and prototype-like mock-up of a real component with a thickness of 50 mm, filled more than 20 passes and a seam length of 1,000 mm. Additional welded stiffeners simulated the effect of a high restraint, to stimulate critical HAC conditions. The necessity of a minimum waiting time (MWT) before the NDT can be conducted (to exclude HAC) was critically verified by the application of ultrasonic testing of the welded joint at different time-steps of the NDT of 48 h after welding. The residual stresses were determined by a robot XRD goniometer. Tensile residual stresses up to the yield limit are found both in the weld metal and in the heat-affected zone. Numerical modelling allowed the qualitative estimation of the hydrogen diffusion in the weld. A remarkable HAC occurrence was not identified and proves both, a certain resistance of the weld joint to HAC and the (questionable) duration of the MWT.
This presentation summarizes the latest results on the microalloying influence on the preciptitation behavior on the mechanical properties of welded high-strength steel with a design yield strength of 690 MPa and above. For that reason, Charpy tests were performed for the pure weld metal and different heat-affected zones. Thermodynamic phase field modeling showed the usefulness of calculations in Thermocalc to predict the preciptiation behavior and (finally) to conclude the mechanistic behavior of the welded joint.
High entropy alloys (HEA) are a new class of materials that have been investigated since the early 2000s and offer great potential to replace conventional alloys. However, since they sometimes have significant contents of expensive alloying elements such as Co or Ni, their use is only conceivable in highly stressed areas of components. For this purpose, the weldability with conventional alloys such as high-alloy austenitic steels must be investigated. In addition to the resulting microstructure, the mechanical properties are also fundamental for the usability of HEAs in DMWs. For this purpose, TIG welds of CoCrFeMnNi HEA (cold rolled and recrystallized state) with AISI 304 austenitic steel are investigated. These mechanical properties are analyzed in this work by means of tensile tests and local hardness measurement. The local strain behavior of the welded joints is also characterized by means of Digital Image Correlation (DIC). The results of the local hardness measurement show a clear influence of the initial condition of the HEA on the HAZ. Thus, the HEA in the cold-rolled condition shows a clear softening because of recrystallization processes in the HAZ. On the other hand, there is no influence on the hardness of the weld metal, which is approx. 200 HV0.1 in both cases. The tensile tests show a consistent failure of the weld in the weld metal. However, regardless of the HEA condition, strengths in the range of the recrystallized HEA (RM ~ 550–600 MPa) are achieved, although with significantly reduced fracture elongations.
In this workpackage of the ELENA project, we develop a way to express the measurement uncertainty of nanoscale determination of electrical propserties. The method developed aims to be usable for industrial contexts and described in technical documents and standards drafts. Standards and reference samples are used to make traceable measurements available for the end user.

It was found that there is a systematic dependence of the crack growth on the welding parameters as well as on the load. Decreasing welding speeds with simultaneously higher heat input promote crack formation with increasing strain rate.
Based on the results, a new crack criterion was finally selected which allows an extended assessment of the material behavior during the MVT-test. The threshold introduced can quantify the dependencies of the crack formation on the welding and testing parameters, which could not be comprehensively described with the conventional evaluation. In principle, the evaluation routine can also be transferred to other Varestraint or externally loaded hot cracking tests.
This presentation summarizes the latest research results of the influence of the post weld heat treatment (PWHT) rate and
the global mechanical stress conditions on the stress relief cracking (SRC) susceptibility of low-alloyed and creep-resistant CrMoV steel submerged arc weld joints. It was found that a certain effect of very low heating rates could be confirmed. In addition, the interlinking of SRC susceptibility increasing effects during the PWHT and the ex-post indentification in metallographic cross-section via microstructure characterization is very complex.
Since there is a continuously growing demand for complex, frequently heavy-sectioned spheroidal graphite cast iron (SGI) castings it is worth paying attention to the chunky graphite (CHG) degeneration which may occur under certain technological circumstances. Although a reference line for preventive actions in terms of general metallurgical and process measures could be drawn to avoid CHG in heavy-sectioned ferritic SGI castings, a broad majority of experts claim the avoidance of CHG in heavy sections cannot yet be rated a hundred percent process safe. A major reason may be seen in the fact that a universal, generally accepted explanation of CHG formation and growth has not yet been established, although several theories have been proposed. Nevertheless, metallurgical aspects are not in the focus of this paper.
This paper is about the current state of methods to detect CHG in SGI on the laboratory and component scales. Capabilities and limits of different metallographic, fractographic and non-destructive computer tomographic methods to recognize and quantify CHG are discussed. With respect to the characteristic fili-gree three-dimensional string-like, multi-branched CHG structure, which is non-isometric and non-dispersed, serious implications on the possibility to quantitatively characterize the amount of CHG must be considered.
In contrary to the metallurgical aspects, the knowledge about the impact of CHG on the materials and com-ponents properties is still surprisingly limited. Therefore, special emphasis of this paper is on the impact of CHG degeneration on the properties of ferritic SGI. Experimental results are reviewed to illustrate the effect of CHG on mechanical strength and ductility properties as well as fracture mechanics properties in terms of crack resistance and fracture toughness.
The present situation is characterized by discussions and uncertainty about the acceptance or rejection of SGI components containing CHG. Addressing this, conclusions from the materials engineering point of view are drawn for quality control, a safe operational strategy in the foundry and component safety.
The spatial laser energy absorption inside the keyhole is decisive for the dynamic molten pool behaviors and the resultant weld properties in high-power laser beam welding (LBW). In this paper, a numerical simulation of the LBW process, considering the 3D transient heat transfer, fluid flow, and keyhole dynamics, is implemented, in which the free surface is tracked by the volume-of-fluid algorithm. The underlying laser-material interactions i.e., the multiple reflections and Fresnel absorption, are considered by an advanced ray-tracing method based on a localized Level-Set strategy and a temperature-dependent absorption coefficient. The laser energy absorption is analyzed from a time-averaged point of view for a better statistical representation. It is found for the first time that a noticeable drop of the time-averaged laser energy absorption occurs at the focus position of the laser beam, and the rest region of the keyhole has relatively homogenous absorbed energy. This unique absorption pattern may lead to a certain keyhole instability and have a strong correlation with the detrimental bulging and narrowing phenomena in the molten pool. The influence of the different focus positions of the laser beam on the keyhole dynamics and molten pool profile is also analyzed and compared. The obtained numerical results are compared with experimental measurements to assure the validity of the proposed model.
The amount of absorbed energy in the keyhole as well as its spatial and temporal distribution is essential to model the laser beam welding process. The recoil pressure, which develops because of the evaporation process induced by the absorbed laser energy at the keyhole wall, is a key determining factor for the macroscopic flow of the molten metal in the weld pool during high-power laser beam welding. Consequently, a realistic implementation of the effect of laser radiation on the weld metal is crucial to obtain reliable and accurate simulation results. In this paper, we discuss manyfold different improvements on the laser-material interaction, namely, the ray tracing method, in the numerical simulation of the laser beam welding process. The first improvement relates to locating the exact reflection points in the ray tracing method using a so-called cosine condition in the determination algorithm for the intersection of reflected rays and the keyhole surface. A second correction refers to the numerical treatment of the Gaussian distribution of the laser beam, whose beam width is defined by a decay of the laser intensity by a factor of 1/e2, thus ignoring around 14% of the total laser beam energy. In the third step, the changes in the laser radiation distribution in the vertical direction were adapted by using different approximations for the converging and the diverging regions of the laser beam, thus mimicking the beam caustic. Finally, a virtual mesh refinement was adopted in the ray tracing routine. The obtained numerical results were validated with experimental measurements.

Since the function of materials is controlled by properties and processes on the atomic scale, ab initio based high-throughput methods are valuable strategies in materials design. For computational efficiency, they are however often restriction to T=0K calculations, while many technologically relevant materials properties and thermodynamic stabilities change when going from low to high temperatures. On the other hand, the constantly increasing performance of digital tools for simulation and data-driven science enables more targeted material development including these kinds of finite-temperature effects. A flexible infrastructure, including data management and workflow solutions is required to make this symbiosis user-friendly efficient. Within this presentation, examples from ab initio thermodynamics for the design of phase stabilities in hard-magnetic alloys and defect-phases in advanced high-strength steels will be demonstrated. We will discuss physical concepts with a focus at the impact of magnetic excitations. At the same time, the examples will be used to derive requirements and present solutions for a digital infrastructure. An outlook will be given to current strategies with the NDFI initiative NFDI-MatWerk.
Structural alloys are largely employed in key industrial sectors and their demand is predicted to rise rapidly for the next decades. Most of these materials require a large amount of energy for extraction and manufacturing, which causes the emission of greenhouse gases and other pollutants. Therefore, strategies for improving the sustainability of structural metallic alloys are urgently needed.
Additive Manufacturing (AM), in particular Laser Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-LB/M), aims to be a sustainable manufacturing process, as it allows the build-up of complex geometry in near net-shape from 3D models, while minimizing material waste and the energy required for the process and post-process treatments.
Nevertheless, the application of additively manufactured parts in structural safety-relevant applications is still hindered by the poor fatigue performance. The cause of this has been mainly attributed to the presence of manufacturing defects and surface roughness. Therefore, a huge effort has been made to optimize the process parameters and to introduce post-process treatments to minimize the defect content. However, material flaws cannot be fully eliminated, but these can be considered in a damage tolerance framework for the prediction of the fatigue performance of additively manufactured metallic materials, which is essential for part design and qualification.
This work aims at presenting different modelling strategies for the prediction of the fatigue limit of AM metals. Simple empirical models and more complex models based on fatigue short crack propagation are proposed. The investigated material is an AlSi10Mg alloy fabricated by PBF-LB/M and subjected to two different low-temperature heat-treatments (265°C for 1 h and 300°C for 2h). The results show that the models can provide good approximation of the fatigue limits and help in the interpretation of the scatter of fatigue data.
The effect of the oscillating metal vapor plume on the keyhole and molten pool behavior during the laser beam welding of AlMg3 aluminum alloys is investigated by experimental and numerical methods. The real-time height of the metal vapor plume is measured by high-speed camera observation. The obtained experimental results are used to evaluate the additional heating source and laser beam attenuation caused by the scattering and absorption based on the Beer–Lambert theory. Furthermore, the dynamic behavior of the metal vapor plume is incorporated into a 3D transient heat transfer and fluid flow model, coupled with the ray tracing method, for the laser beam welding of the AlMg3 alloy. It is found that additional heating resulting from the scattered and absorbed laser beam energy by the metal vapor plume significantly expands the shape of the molten pool on the top region. Moreover, the oscillating metal vapor plume caused the fluctuation of the high-temperature region in the molten pool. The probability of keyhole collapse at the bottom increases 17% due to the oscillating laser power induced by the laser beam attenuation. The internal interplay between the metal vapor plume, molten pool shape, and keyhole collapse is obtained. The developed model has been validated by experiments, which shows a good agreement.
Magnetohydrodynamic technology is increasingly recognized as a promising approach for enhancing the quality of deep penetration laser beam welding. This study employs experimental and numerical methods to investigate the effects of an auxiliary oscillating magnetic field on reducing porosity in the laser beam welding of 5754 aluminum alloy. The experimental results clearly demonstrate a significant reduction in the porosity ratio, thereby validating the efficacy of applying MHD technology in mitigating porosity during the laser beam welding process. In addition, a transient 3D multi-physical model has been developed, integrating the magnetohydrodynamic and metal vapor plume, to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the porosity suppression mechanism. The introduction of an oscillating magnetic field generates a time-averaged downward Lorentz force. This Lorentz force, in turn, induces an electromagnetic expulsive force, which effectively increases the upward escape velocity of bubbles in the molten pool. Furthermore, the molten pool shape is significantly enlarged, which further facilitate the escape of bubbles. The simulation results agree well with the experimental results.

Fracture mechanics-based methods can be applied to the fatigue assessment of mechanical components containing defects or cracks subjected to cyclic loading. The knowledge of the crack growth behavior for short and long cracks enables the determination of both finite and infinite life regimes. Nevertheless, a first problem arises from the empirical determination of the fatigue data, which vary according to the test conditions, e.g., the test method, frequency and the stress ratio R. This is due to crack closure and further environmental phenomena affecting crack propagation behavior. A second issue regards the lack of standard experimental procedures for the determination of the fatigue crack propagation threshold ΔKth dependency on the crack size. This is problematic, since ΔKth increases with the build-up of the closure effects in the short crack regime and its inaccurate experimental determination leads to large deviations in the assessment and, even more critical, to non-conservative predictions. Aiming at providing more reliable and safer assessment procedures, the present work proposes a method based on effective crack growth data obtained at high stress ratios (R ≈ 0.8). A short-crack model based on the cyclic R-curve and CPLR data is employed for describing the development of the closure effects. The predictions are compared to established methods and validated by experimental tests.
Thermodynamic bulk phase diagrams have become the roadmap used by researchers to identify alloy compositions and process conditions that result in novel materials with tailored microstructures. On the other hand, recent progress in experimental atomic-scale characterization techniques allows one to study the local chemical composition at individual defects such as interfaces, grain boundaries, dislocations and surfaces. They show that changes in the alloy composition can drive not only transitions in the bulk phases present in a material, but also in the concentration and type of defects they contain. Defect phase diagrams, using chemical potentials as thermodynamics variables, provide a natural route to study these chemically driven defects. Our results show, however, that the direct application of thermodynamic approaches can fail to reproduce the experimentally observed defect formation.
Therefore, we extend the concept to metastable defect phase diagrams to account for kinetic limitations that prevent the system from reaching equilibrium. We use ab initio calculations based on density functional theory to quantify the extension of regions where defect formation is expected. We successfully applied this concept to explain the formation of large concentrations of planar defects in supersaturated Fe2Nb Laves phases. In addition, we identify in a joint study with experiments conditions and structures in Mg-Al-Ca alloys for defect phase occurrence. The concept offers new avenues for designing materials with tailored defect structures.
Understanding segregation to grain boundaries, and eventually their defect phase diagrams, is critical to enable rational grain boundary engineering for alloys design. Here, we discuss the progress and challenges one may face when generating such a database of defect-solute interactions, in the context of studying of grain boundary segregation of solutes and impurities in Fe GBs. To compute the large number of relevant defect-solute interactions we have performed high-throughput ab initio calculations using efficient and highly automated workflows using pyiron. We study has been performed across a representative set of coincident-site-lattice (CSL) type tilt GBs. Based on the large ab-initio datasets, we extract and analyse the chemical and structural trends observed in the solute segregation behaviour across the periodic table. The features which are most important in evaluating site segregation are presented and discussed.
The Kitagawa-Takahashi (KT) diagram is a well-established tool in the fatigue community for the prediction of the fatigue limit of metallic materials in presence of defects. Nevertheless, its determination is associated with a large number of fatigue tests carried out on specimens with artificial defects (notches) to describe the fatigue limit-defect size relationship in the short crack regime. The preparation of the specimens and the execution of the tests is time expensive. Therefore, few phenomenological models have been introduced in the past to provide a first approximation of the KT diagram based solely on the fatigue limit for smooth specimen and the fatigue crack propagation threshold for long cracks. Despite the use of such models is widely spread, these suffer from problems related to the uncertainties of the material parameters. Furthermore, the mechanics of short cracks, which is the physical mechanism behind the concept of the fatigue limit, is not considered. This work discusses the advantages and drawbacks of using short fatigue crack propagation models for predicting the fatigue limit of flawed metallic materials. The KT diagrams for a EA4T railway axle steel in as-received and full-hardened condition are approximated by means of the cyclic R-curve method.
Inspired by the chemistry of mussel adhesive proteins, polydopamine (PDA has been shown as one of the most versatile platforms for altering the properties and incorporating new functionalities to nearby any material surface despite its nature. Rich chemistry of PDA enables broad variety of surface modification and diverse secondary reactions that makes it extremely interesting for a wide range of application including biomedical field, e.g., drug delivery, adhesives, cell adhesion, biosensing. Despite high potential of polydopamine, the lack of deposition control and precision in existed methods limits their applications in microdevices and miniaturized functional systems like, for example, MEMS, microfluidic and sensorics.
Herein, we demonstrate a novel maskless approach for surface micropatterning with polydopamine based on Multiphoton Lithography that overcomes present limitations. Neither strong oxidants, metal ions nor adjustment of pH to alkaline is required by this technique. The spatial resolution down to 0.8 µm has been achieved which is at least an order of magnitude smaller than shown by other existed methods. We are able to control the morphology and thickness of the micropattern by altering fabrication parameters allowing structure gradient.
Apart from the glass substrate, we achieved PDA patterning at surfaces of different nature such as polychlorotrifluoroethylene, polydimethylsiloxane, polyethylene terephthalate, silicon wafers, and fluorinated glass coverslips. Post-modification of polydopamine micropatterns with protein enzyme like trypsin is demonstrated to highlight its sensing potential.
Presented in this work microfabrication technique empowers advanced applications of mussel-inspired materials in single-molecule bioassays, sensors and other complex microdevices.
