1-Propyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (Solarpur®), an ionic liquid was purchased from Merck (formerly Sigma Aldrich), was analyzed using hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES). The liquid is UHV stable, vertically and laterally homogeneous, and is easy to clean; thus, it can be used as a reference material. The HAXPES spectra of Solarpur® obtained using monochromatic Cr Kα radiation at 5414.8 eV include a survey scan, high-resolution spectra of C 1s, O 1s, N 1s, S 2p, S 1s, S 2s, F 1s, and S KLL.
Das DVS-Vorhaben 01.3211 „Herstellung beanspruchungsgerechter Oberflächen durch Kombination innovativer additiver und abtragender Fertigungsschritte an hochbelasteten Komponenten“ ist ein Kooperationsprojekt der Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM) und dem Institut für Schweißtechnik und Trennende Fertigungsverfahren (ISAF) der Technischen Universität Clausthal. Das Übergeordnete Projektziel ist das Erlangen von Erkenntnissen für eine sichere und wirtschaftliche, kombinierte additive und abtragende Fertigung aus kostenintensiven Werkstoffen hochbelasteter Komponenten insbesondere für KMU. Dabei stehe die beiden Werkstoffe CoCr26Ni9Mo5W (2.4681) und FeNi36 (1.3912) im Fokus. Mittels Modifikation der Schweißzusätze sind homogen und isotrop ausgeprägte Werkstoffeigenschaften und eine Erhöhung der Prozessstabilität und Fertigungsfreiheitsgrade bei der additiven Fertigung erzielbar. Darüber hinaus wird der Einfluss nachfolgender abtragender Bearbeitungsschritte des ultraschallunterstützen und des konventionellen Fräsprozesses untersucht. Im Laufe der Sitzung des projektbegleitenden Ausschusses (PbA) wurde der aktuelle Bearbeitungsstand sowie der Zeitplan vorgestellt. Darüber hinaus wurde mit dem PbA über die bereits erzielten Ergebnisse diskutiert. Abschließend wurde ein kurzer Ausblick über die zeitnah beginnenden Arbeiten beider Forschungseinrichtungen sowie ein Überblick über die vorhabenbezogenen Aufwendungen der Wirtschaft und des Ergebnistransfers in die Wirtschaft gegeben.
Additive Manufacturing (AM) in terms of laser powder-bed fusion (L-PBF) offers new prospects regarding the design of parts and enables therefore the production of complex structures. The quality of the feedstock material receives increasing attention, as it depicts the first part of the L-PBF process chain. The powder quality control in terms of flowability and powder bed packing density is therefore mandatory.
In this work, a workflow for quantitative 3D powder analysis in terms of particle size, particle shape, particle porosity, inter-particle distance and packing density was established. Synchrotron computed tomography (CT) was used to correlate the packing density with the particle size and particle shape for three different powder batches. The polydisperse particle size distribution (PSD) was transformed into a statistically equivalent bidisperse PSD. The ratio of the small and large particles helped to understand the powder particle packing density. While the particle shape had a neglectable influence, the particle size distribution was identified as major contributor for the packing density.
Layer-by-layer additive manufacturing (AM) by means of laser-powder bed Fusion (L-PBF) offers many prospects regarding the design of lattice structures used, for example, in gas turbines. However, defects such as bulk porosity, Surface roughness, and re-entrant features are exacerbated in nonvertical structures, such as tilted struts. The characterization and quantification of these kinds of
defects are essential for the correct estimation of fracture and fatigue properties.
Herein, cylindrical struts fabricated by L-PBF are investigated by means of X-ray computed tomography (XCT), with the aim of casting light on the dependence of the three kinds of defects (bulk porosity, surface roughness, and re-entrant features) on the build angle. Innovative analysis methods are proposed to correlate shape and position of pores, to determine the angular-resolved Surface roughness, and to quantify the amount of re-entrant surface features, q. A meshing of the XCT surface enables the correlation of q with the classical Surface roughness Pa. This analysis leads to the conclusion that there is a linear correlation between q and Pa. However, it is conjectured that there must be a threshold of surface roughness, below which no re-entrant features can be build.
3D printing enables a better control over the microstructure of bone restoring constructs, addresses the challenges seen in the preparation of patient-specific bone scaffolds, and overcomes the bottlenecks that can appear in delivering drugs/growth factors promoting bone regeneration. Here, 3D printing is employed for the fabrication of an osteogenic construct made of hydrogel nanocomposites. Alginate dialdehyde-gelatin (ADA-GEL) hydrogel is reinforced by the incorporation of bioactive glass nanoparticles, i.e. mesoporous silica-calcia nanoparticles (MSNs), in two types of drug (icariin) loading. The composites hydrogel is printed as superhydrated composite constructs in a grid structure. The MSNs not only improve the mechanical stiffness of the constructs but also induce formation of an apatite layer when the construct is immersed in simulated body fluid (SBF), thereby promoting cell adhesion and proliferation. The nanocomposite constructs can hold and deliver icariin efficiently, regardless of its incorporation mode, either as loaded into the MSNs or freely distributed within the hydrogel. Biocompatibility tests showed that the hydrogel nanocomposites assure enhanced osteoblast proliferation, adhesion, and differentiation. Such optimum biological properties stem from the superior biocompatibility of ADA-GEL, the bioactivity of the MSNs, and the supportive effect of icariin in relation to cell Proliferation and differentiation. Taken together, given the achieved structural and biological properties and effective drug delivery capability, the hydrogel nanocomposites show promising potential for bone tissue engineering.
The chapter starts with a brief introduction about corrosion, which is defined as the interdependency between a metal, a corrosive environment, and the respective component design. The second section introduces the most important forms of aqueous electrochemical corrosion (uniform corrosion, galvanic corrosion, selective and intergranular corrosion, and finally pitting and crevice corrosion in the case of passive layer forming metals). In addition, electrochemical corrosion under applied mechanical load is introduced (stress corrosion cracking, hydrogen-assisted cracking, corrosion fatigue), as well as special forms of corrosion (erosion, fretting, and microbiologically induced corrosion). The third section of this chapter introduces (mostly dry) chemical corrosion and high-temperature corrosion (oxidation, carburization, high-temperature hydrogen attack, sulfurization, nitriding, halogenation). As in the case of electrochemical corrosion, chemical corrosion can also be superimposed by mechanical loads. Finally, general facts on the testing of corrosion are introduced.
The co-crystallisation of [NiEn3](NO3)2 (En = ethylenediamine) with Na2MoO4 and Na2WO4 from a water solution results in the formation of [NiEn3](MoO4)0.5(WO4)0.5 co-crystals. According to the X-ray diffraction analysis of eight single crystals, the parameters of the hexagonal unit cell (space group P–31c, Z = 2) vary in the following intervals: a = 9.2332(3)–9.2566(6); c = 9.9512(12)–9.9753(7) Å with the Mo/W ratio changing from 0.513(3)/0.487(3) to 0.078(4)/0.895(9). The thermal decomposition of [NiEn3](MoO4)0.5(WO4)0.5 individual crystals obtained by co-crystallisation was performed in He and H2 atmospheres. The ex situ X-ray study of thermal decomposition products shows the formation of nanocrystalline refractory alloys and carbide composites containing ternary Ni–Mo–W phases. The formation of carbon–nitride phases at certain stages of heating up to 1000 °C were shown.
Sample functions, i.e., stochastic process realizations, are used to define cumulative damage phenomena which end into an observable terminal state or failure. The complexity inherent to such phenomena justifies the use of phenomenological models associated with the evolution of a physical magnitude feasible to be monitored during the test. Sample functions representing the damage evolution may be identified, once normalized to the interval [0,1], with cumulative distribution functions (cdfs), generally, of the generalized extreme value (GEV) family. Though usually only a fraction of the whole damage evolution, according to the specific problem handled, is available from the test record, the phenomenological models proposed allow the whole damage process to be recovered. In this way, down- and upwards extrapolations of the whole damage process beyond the scope of the experimental program are provided as a fundamental tool for failure prediction in the practical design. The proposed methodology is detailed and its utility and generality confirmed by its successive application to representative well-known problems in fatigue and fracture characterization. The excellent fittings, the physical interpretation of the model parameters and the good expectations to achieve a complete probabilistic analysis of these phenomena justify the interest of the proposed phenomenological approach with possible applications to other cumulative damage processes.
A phenomenological criterion for an optical assessment of PE-HD fracture surfaces obtained from FNCT

The full-notch creep test (FNCT) is a common test method to evaluate the environmental stress cracking (ESC) behavior of high-density polyethylene (PE-HD), e.g. for container materials. The test procedure as specified in ISO 16770 provides a comparative measure of the resistance against ESC using the time to failure of PE-HD specimens under constant mechanical load in a well-defined liquid test environment. Since the craze-crack damage mechanism underlying the ESC phenomenon is associated with brittle failure, the occurrence of a predominantly brittle fracture surface is a prerequisite to consider an FNCT measurement as representative for ESC, i.e. a time to failure dominated by craze-crack propagation.
The craze-crack propagation continuously reduces the effective residual cross-sectional area of the specimen during the test, which results in a corresponding increase of the effective mechanical stress. Thus, a transition to ductile shear deformation is inevitable at later stages of the test, leading usually to a pronounced central ligament.
Therefore, an optical evaluation of FNCT fracture surfaces concerning their brittleness is essential. An enhanced imaging analysis of FNCT fracture surfaces enables a detailed assessment of craze-crack Propagation during ESC. In this study, laser scanning microscopy (LSM) was employed to evaluate whether FNCT fracture surfaces are representative with respect to craze-crack propagation and ESC. Based on LSM height data, a phenomenological criterion is proposed to assess the validity of distinct FNCT measurements. This criterion is
supposed to facilitate a quick evaluation of FNCT results in practical routine testing. Its applicability is verified on a sample basis for seven different commercial PE-HD container materials.
