Entwicklung eines luftgekoppelten Ultra-schall-Echo-Prüfverfahrens mittels fluidischer Anregung
(2019)
The current establishment of stretchable electronics to form a seamless link between soft or even living materials and the digital world is at the forefront of multidisciplinary research efforts, bridging physics, engineering and materials science. Magnetic functionalities can provide a sense of displacement, orientation or proximity to this novel formulation of electronics. This work reviews the recent development of stretchable magnetic field sensorics relying on the combination of metallic thin films revealing a giant magnetoresistance effect with elastomeric materials. Stretchability of the magnetic nanomembranes is achieved by specific morphologic features (e.g. wrinkles or microcracks), which accommodate the applied tensile deformation while maintaining the electrical and magnetic integrity of the sensor device. The entire development, from the demonstration of the world’s first elastically stretchable magnetic sensor to the realization of a technology platform for robust, ready-to-use elastic magnetosensorics is described. Soft giant magnetoresistive elements exhibiting the same sensing performance as on conventional rigid supports, but with fully strain invariant properties up to 270% stretching have been demonstrated. With their unique mechanical properties, these sensor elements readily conform to ubiquitous objects of arbitrary shapes including the human skin. Stretchable magnetoelectronic sensors can equip soft and epidermal electronic systems with navigation, orientation, motion tracking and touchless control capabilities. A variety of novel technologies, like electronic skins, smart textiles, soft robotics and actuators, active medical implants and soft consumer electronics will benefit from these new magnetic functionalities.
For the vast majority of ellipsometric measurements, the application of planar substrates is mandatory and requires a proper sample alignment prior to the measurement. Here, the authors present a generalized approach of how to extract the isotropic ellipsometric sample parameters from an imaging Mueller-matrix measurement even if the sample is significantly misaligned. They validate the method by layer-thickness calculations based on imaging Mueller-matrix measurements of flat crystalline silicon samples that were misaligned on purpose. Furthermore, they also exploit this method’s capabilities to perform spatially resolved layer-thickness measurements of a single-layer indium-tin-oxide coating on a fused-silica microlens without the need of realignment or repositioning of the sample during the measurement.
In various kinds of radiography, deficient transmission imaging may occur due to backlighting inside the detector itself arising from light or radiation scattering. The related intensity mismatches barely disturb the high resolution contrast, but its long range nature results in reduced attenuation levels which are often disregarded. Based on X-ray observations and an empirical formalism, a procedure is developed for a first order correction of detector backlighting. A backlighting factor is modeled as a function of the relative detector coverage by the sample projection. Different cases of sample transmission are regarded at different backlight factors and detector coverage. The additional intensity of backlighting may strongly affect the values of materials’ attenuation up to a few 10%. The presented scenario provides a comfortable procedure for corrections of X-ray or neutron transmission imaging data.
Fluorescent molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for sensing of phosphorylated protein epitopes
(2019)
Early detection of cancer is instrumental for successful therapeutic outcomes, but it is presently a considerable challenge. Biopsy of potentially cancerous tissues is the gold standard in medicine for the diagnosis and prognosis of this disease; however, it may not be possible in many cases due to tumour position or other complications. Liquid biopsy-based detection of specific cancer markers in biological fluids can be easily performed via immunoanalytical techniques. However, antibody-based methods suffer from high cost of tumour specific antibodies due to difficult and lengthy production. Furthermore, antibodies may have limited specificity to the target molecule, and limited lifetimes. The so-called “plastic antibodies” as MIPs can be a more affordable, reliable and stable alternative to antibodies, especially for cancer diagnostics.
Our goal is to create MIP particles to selectively bind cancer biomarkers and rapidly display a fluorescence change upon interaction with molecules of interest. Epitopes containing the phosphorylated tyrosine (pY) motif such as tripeptide YpYG and tetrapeptide pYEEI were selected as target analytes. Cancers may disrupt tyrosine phosphorylation processes regulated by human tyrosine kinases such as ZAP-70 and subsequently lead to a pronounced increase in pY residues on proteins. To ensure fast diffusion of analyte and rapid response core/shell silica micro- and nanoparticles with a thin polymer shell was chosen as the format for MIP synthesis. Fluorescent probe monomers consisting of fluorophore and recognition units are directly integrated in the polymer shell to obtain fluorescence response upon analyte binding.
We have synthesized the fluorescent MIP particles based on the previously published report [W. Wan et al., Chem. Eur. J., 2017, 23, 15974-1598] for the novel phosphorylated targets with a high imprinting factor and high degree of discrimination between target analyte and non-phosphorylated and smaller competitors. The synthesized particles may be used in microfluidic devices for the rapid diagnostics of cancer.
