A round robin test on flash thermography was organized within the scope of a standardization research project. This test gives information on reliability, comparability and efficiency of different testing situations. Data recorded on metal and CFRP test specimens with flat bottom holes (FBH) were analysed by evaluating the detectability and by calculating the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the defect signatures as a function of defect parameters. For the investigation of the influence of material properties on the spatial resolution as well as on penetration depth, test specimens made of steel and copper with crossed notches and a notch ramp were constructed and investigated. Here, the minimum resolvable notch distance and the maximum detectable depth of the ramp were analysed.

Work on standardising methods in the field of animal species differentiation has been intensified in Germany in recent years, not least due to the horsemeat scandal in 2013. Even though there are now hardly ever any positive findings any more in examinations to detect horse adulterations in foods such as lasagne, animal species differentiation altogether ranks high in detecting adulteration of foods. This article therefore summarises the current status of analytical techniques used in Germany with standardisation at German level. It has been established by the working group “Biochemical and Molecular Biological Analytics” of the Lebensmittelchemische Gesellschaft (Food Chemistry Society within the German Chemical Society) with support of experts in the working group “Molecular biology techniques for differentiating plant and animal species” (§ 64 of the German Food and Feed Code – LFGB) and the “Immunology and molecular biology” task force of the food hygiene and Food of animal origin working group (ALTS), both from Germany.
The accumulation of plastics leaked into the environment achieve a high perception in the last years. It is uncontroversial that often an uncontrolled, high consumption of plastic products and a poor waste management resulted in plastic findings all over in the environment. However, less is known about the relevant pathways and fate of plastic in the environment. Especially plastic fragments smaller 5 mmm, so called microplastics, achieve a high attention, because their amount and risks arising from these fragments are still unknown. The basic mechanisms of plastic or more precise, of different polymer degradation processes are often not considered, resulting in unrealistic statements.
For generation of fundamental understanding of this problem we developed in the last years a fast thermoanalytical method for identification and mass quantification of microplastics in complex samples. The presentation will also give a short introduction about polymer degradation.
The main objectives of the new EMPIR project nPSize are to establish EU capability of traceable measurement of NP size and shape, lower uncertainties of NP size measurement by developement of new nano-CRMs, new models (physical and machine learning), 3D method combination, and also by new ISO and CEN standards on accurate NP size measurement and guidance and knowledge transfer. The envisaged outcomes of the project will be presented and their suitability will be discussed to be taken over as pertinent contributions to normative projects within CEN/TC 352 Nanotechnologies.
The presentation points out and discusses potential future projects on microbeam analysis which shall benefit from the pre-standardisation platform VAMAS (Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standards) which is basically related to Organisation and participation in international inter-laboratory comparisons. Ideas and strategies of better synergies between VAMAS and ISO projects (including promotion and a dedicated liaison) are discusssed.
The Systematic Review of ISO/DIS 15632 Selected Instrumental Parameters for the Specification and Checking of Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Spectrometers for Use in Electron Probe Microanalysers is discusssed. Zero strobe peak, better description of dead-time and of the pulse-processing electronics are the major issues under discussion.
Eleventh canSAS Meeting: International Cooperation and Collaboration in Small-Angle Scattering

The eleventh canSAS workshop was held in Freising, Germany, July 8–10, 2019.
These international meetings, promoting collective action for nomadic small-angle scatterers, have been taking place since 1998 and act as forums to catalyze cooperation amongst the SAS community in order to provide better facilities and equipment, combined with reliable data interpretation and analysis. The meeting attracted over 60 participants from major neutron and X-ray laboratories, as well as manufacturers of SAXS equipment, and users from academia and industry. There was also a wide geographical spread with participants from Australia, Asia, and North America joining European colleagues.
