The prediction of the properties of the materials used in the operation of components is of enormous importance, in order to accelerate the development process of new components. To evaluate new materials in terms of their performance (in a component), the development of new innovative methods is necessary. These methods can also be summarized under the term lab-to-field or materials – upscaling, meaning materials being characterised in a laboratory and their properties being upscaled to the component performance by means of e.g. simulation. i-TRIBOMAT is a EU funded project (H2020, GA Nr. 814494) aiming at building an Open Innovation Test Bed for tribological material characterization and offering corresponding services from tribological characterization of new materials to simulation models for predicting the performance of industrial components. By bundling the infrastructure, know-how for characterization and building a digital platform, i-TRIBOMAT becomes the world’s largest open innovation test bed for tribological material characterization.
The addition of WC and TiC in a nickel bonded NbC cermet was investigated regarding the tribological behavior under dry oscillating sliding at different relative humidities φ and the cutting performance in dry cylindrical turning of C45E at different cutting speeds. NbC-12Ni-12WC-14TiC shows similar coefficient of friction f and wear rate compared to NbC-12Ni at φ = 2 %, but no pronounced decrease in f with increasing humidity. When turning C45E, NbC-12Ni-12WC-14TiC shows lower material removal VW compared to other NbC-based cermets, which can be attributed to inhomogeneities in the cutting material and a low hardness.

i-TRIBOMAT will provide the world's first Open Innovation Test Bed dedicated to analysing and simulating materials in tribological systems. In order to make necessary results of tribological tests comparable, harmonised ways to produce data are mandatory. Many sources influence the outcome of a Tribological test. Different approaches of institutes were evaluated in best practices via quality management tools minimising the impact on results.
The work on Tribology, digitalisation, and the harmonised procedures developed in i-TRIBOMAT Open Innovation Testbed was presented. The project develops procedures and shares ideas on how to deal with characterisation techniques and provide services to end users in different places and locations, which is realised by adopting a common and widely agreed procedures. i-TRIBOMAT is active also via YouTube platform to enhance communication and spread the word amongst the interested parties and society.
