In construction and demolition waste (CDW) recycling, the preference to date has been to apply simple but proven techniques to sort and process large quantities of construction rubble in a short time. This contrasts with the increasingly complex composite materials and structures in the mineral building materials industry. An automated, sensor-based sorting of these building materials could complement or replace the practice of manual sorting to improve processing speed, recycling rates, sorting quality, and prevailing health conditions for the executing staff.
A joint project of partners from industry and research institutions approaches this task by investigating and testing the combination of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) with near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and visual imaging. Joint processing of information (data fusion) is expected to significantly improve the sorting quality of CDW, and may enable the detection and separation of impurities such as SO3-cotaining building materials (gypsum, aerated concrete, etc.)
We present current advances and results about the methodological development combining LIBS with NIR spectroscopy and visual imaging. Here, applying data fusion proves itself beneficial to improve recognition rates. In the future, a laboratory prototype will serve as a fully automated measurement setup to allow real-time classification of CDW on a conveyor belt.
Thermography is a widely accepted non-invasive measurement method and is generally used in various areas of the life cycle of infrastructure and machinery. This includes design, production and maintenance. Thermography is particularly suitable for remote inspection of large areas that are difficult to reach.
In this presentation, applications of thermography in the field of wind energy will be shown, touching on three explicit examples from rotor blade inspection.
Experimental testing and validation: Thermography can measure and visualise the stress distribution on the surface during cyclic tests of rotor blades and rotor blade sections. The so-called thermoelastic stress analysis makes use of special evaluation algorithms (Lockin analysis) of the measurement data and the cyclic loading of components. An advantage of the measurement methods compared to other measurement methods such as strain gauges or digital image correlation is that it does not require any extra treatment or sensoring of the components. In the work shown here, repair methods are optimised and evaluated in cyclic tests on shell test specimens.
Operation and maintenance: Rotor blades can be inspected from the ground during operation using passive thermography. Here, the integration of weather forecasts and conditions as input for simulations is crucial and will be demonstrated with some examples from the field. The goal of the ongoing research is to obtain detailed insights into the internal structure of the inspected rotor blades with individual measurements. A specially developed automated measuring system is able to measure a wind turbine (one-sided) within 5 minutes without impacting its operation.
Environmental impact: In cases where less strict time and economic constraints apply than in the maintenance of rotor blades in operation, thermography can also be used to realise other inspection processes that take more time. Examples of this are quality control or the characterisation of rotor blades during dismantling. In the latter case, for example, it can be crucial to know which components such as foam, balsa, belt and spar are present in which parts of the blade when dismantling the rotor blades. Long-term measurements (~1-2 h) under suitable weather conditions can provide good insights into the inner structure of the rotor blades, both during disassembly and during quality control before installation. For this purpose, the sun is used as a heat source, which induces a thermal response of the rotor blades. The thermal behaviour of the rotor blades then allows conclusions to be drawn about the internal structure.
The work shown demonstrates the possibility of measuring the load distribution of complex components such as rotor blades in cyclic tests using thermography. This is confirmed in the experiments presented by comparison with DIC measurements. The advantage of thermography is that it does not require any treatment of the test specimens in the setup shown and the measurement procedure can in principle be scaled to large components. In addition, compared to other imaging methods, the actual loads and not the deformation are measured. With a suitable data evaluation by means of Lockin analysis, small loads can be verified in a formative manner. Using the example of model repairs in shell test specimens made of sandwich glass fibre composite material, it is shown that inhomogeneous load distribution due to internal structures can be detected using thermography.
Mechanical properties of metals and their alloys are strongly governed by their microstructure. The nanometer-sized precipitates in hardenable wrought aluminium alloys, which can be controlled by heat treatment, act as obstacles to dislocation movement within the material and are critical to the mechanical performance of the component, in this case a radial compressor wheel of a ships’ engine. TEM-based image analysis is essential for the study to investigate the microstructural changes (precipitation coarsening) that occur as a result of ageing at elevated temperatures.
Responsible treatment of the environment and resources is a key element of sustainability. The building and construction industry is one of the largest consumers of natural resources. Consequently, there is a particular need for regulations and technologies that help to create closed material cycles. From the technological point of view, such efforts are complicated by the growing material diversity and the amount of composites contained in present and future construction and demolition waste (CDW). Nowadays, simple but proven techniques like manual sorting are mainly used. However, this practice not only poses health risks and dangers to the staff performing the work, but also relies on merely obvious, visually striking differences. Automated, sensor-based sorting of these building materials could complement or replace this practice to improve processing speed, recycling rates, sorting quality, and prevailing health conditions. The preliminary results for the identification of a wide variety of building materials with LIBS are presented.
Photothermal characterization of polyester composites loaded with parallelly arranged graphite rods
(2022)
One of the biggest challenges in the measurement of thermal properties is to measure inhomogeneous materials This work focuses on measuring the thermal properties of cylindrical polyester resin composite materials loaded with graphite rods oriented in the direction of the resin thickness, varying the graphite concentrations starting from zero to 8 75 of volumetric fraction and changing the distribution of graphite rods inside the polyester matrix
Thermographic non-destructive testing is based on the interaction of thermal waves with inhomogeneities. The propagation of thermal waves from the heat source to the inhomogeneity and to the detection surface according to the thermal diffusion equation leads to the fact that two closely spaced defects can be incorrectly detected as one defect in the measured thermogram. In order to break this spatial resolution limit (super resolution), the combination of spatially structured heating and numerical methods of compressed sensing can be used. The improvement of the spatial resolution for defect detection then depends in the classical sense directly on the number of measurements. Current practical implementations of this super resolution detection still suffer from long measurement times, since not only the achievable resolution depends on performing multiple measurements, but due to the use of single spot laser sources or laser arrays with low pixel count, also the scanning process itself is quite slow. With the application of most recent high-power digital micromirror device (DMD) based laser projector technology this issue can now be overcome.
The manufacturing of metal parts for the use in safety-relevant applications by Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) demands a quality assurance of both part and process. Thermography is a nondestructive testing method that allows the in-situ determination of the thermal history of the produced part which is connected to the mechanical properties and the formation of defects [1]. A wide range of commercial thermographic camera systems working in different spectral ranges is available on the market. The understanding of the applicability of these cameras for qualitative and quantitative in-situ measurements in L-PBF is of vital importance [2]. In this study, the building process of a cylindrical specimen (Inconel 718) is monitored by three camera systems simultaniously. These camera systems are sensitive in various spectral bandwidths providing information in different temperature ranges. The performance of each camera system is explored in the context of the extraction of image features for the detection of defects. It is shown that the high temporal and thermal process dynamics are limiting factors on this matter. The combination of different spectral camera systems promises the potential of an improved defect detection by data fusion.
Environmentally friendly alternatives to cement are created through the synthesis of numerous base materials. The variation of their proportions alone leads to millions of materials candidates. Identifying suitable materials is very laborious; traditional systematic research in the laboratory consumes a lot of time and effort.
Sequential learning (SL) potentially speeds up the materials research process despite limited but highly complex available information. SL does not make direct predictions of material properties but ranks possible experiments according to their utility. The most promising experiments are prioritized over dead-end experiments and experiments whose outcome is already known.
Our work has shown that SL seems to be promising for cement research. So far, research has mainly focused on materials whose synthesis is faster and whose material properties require less time for development or characterization (allowing many successive experiments). Contrarily, in the case of binders, SL is only useful if few experiments lead to the desired goal, as for example, the determination of the compressive strength alone typically requires 28 days.
In research practice, experimental designs and the availability of resources often determine which data can be used - for example, when some laboratory resources are not available or deemed irrelevant to a task. As a result, new research scenarios are constantly emerging, each of which requires to demonstrate SL’s performance.
We are presenting the SLAMD app to facilitate the exploration of SL methods in numerous research scenarios. The app provides flexible and low-threshold access to AI methods via intuitive and interactive user interfaces. We deliberately pursue a software-based research approach (as opposed to code-, or script-based). On the one hand, the results are more comprehensible since we refer to a common (code) basis (’reproducible science’). On the other hand, the methods are easily accessible to all which accelerates the knowledge transfer into laboratory practice.
A joint project of partners from industry and research institutions for the research and construction of an analysis system for an automated, sensor-supported sorting of construction and demolition waste will be presented. This is intended to supplement or replace the previously practiced manual sorting, which harbors many risks and dangers for the staff and only enables obvious, visually detectable differences for separation. The method of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy is to be used in combination with hyperspectral sensors. Due to the jointly processed information (data fusion), this should lead to a significant improvement in the separation of types. In addition to the sorting of different materials (concrete, main masonry building materials, organic components, glass, etc.), impurities such as SO3-containing building materials (gypsum, aerated concrete, etc.) could also be detected and separated.
The subsequent recycling and sales opportunities are examined, such as the use of recycled aggregates in concrete, the recycling of building materials containing sulphate as a gypsum substitute for the cement industry or the agglomeration of synthetic lightweight aggregates for lightweight concrete or as a substrate for green roofs. At the same time, it is investigated whether soluble components (sulfates, heavy metals, etc.) can be detected by LIBS without a wet chemical analysis and what impact the recycling materials have on the environment.
The entire value chain is examined using the example of the Berlin location in order to minimize economic / technological barriers and obstacles on a cluster level and to sustainably increase the recovery and recycling rates.
Im Europäischen EMPIR-Projekt „NanoXSpot“ (Measurement of the focal spot size of Xray tubes with spot sizes down to 100 nm) werden neue Messmethoden für Brennflecke von Röntgenröhren entwickelt.
