Mechanical drop test scenarios for Type B (U) packages according to the IAEA regulations have to be carried out onto the so-called “unyielding target” (usually with cask impact limiters) and onto the puncture bar respectively. They are predefined and do not require any further investigation of scenarios that really could happen on transportation routes. Cask accident scenarios in the framework of approval procedures for interim storage sites are derived from a detailed analysis of the handling procedures necessary from arrival of cask at the site to its storing position.
In that case, casks are usually handled without impact limiters. Dependent on possible drop heights, drop positions and floor properties, conservative cask accident scenarios are derived for further safety proofs. According to the mechanical assessment concept of the considered approval procedure numerical calculations have to be provided by the applicant to demonstrate mechanical cask safety. Stresses and strains in the cask body as well as in the lid System have to be identified and assessed. Using the example of a 3-mvertical-drop of a transport and storage cask for spent fuel elements onto the floor construction made of damping concrete covered by screed, BAM developed a finite element model. The finite element code ABAQUS/Explicit™ was used. Results of experimental investigations are not available. Therefore parameter studies are necessary to identify the sensitivity of the finite element model to significant Parameters and to verify the finite element models according to the requirements of the Guidelines for the Numerical Safety Analyses for the Approval of Transport and Storage Casks for Radioactive Materials (BAM GGR-008). The paper describes the modeling of the material behavior and attachment of bottom side cask components. Questions concerning the modeling of a crack length limiting reinforcement in the screed layer are discussed. The influence of the mesh density of the screed layer and its strength is considered as well. Finally, the developed finite element model can be used for a numerical safety assessment. It can help to understand the complex mechanisms of the interaction between the cask components and floor construction.
Analytische bruchmechanische Ermittlung der Schwingfestigkeit von Schweißverbindungen (IBESS-A3)
(2016)

This Report describes the certification of the reference material antimony implanted in Si/SiO2 intended to be used for calibration of surface and near surface analytical methods. It describes the preparation, homogeneity measurements and the analytical work performed for the certification of both Areal density of antimony Atoms (retained dose) and the isotope amount Ratio as well as giving considerations on the stability of the material.
Three petrol reference materials were certified for their total sulfur content in support of Directive 2003/17/EC of the European Parliament and of the European Council, which stipulates that petrol with a maximum S content of 10 mg/kg must be available in all member states by 2009. Commercially available petrol was obtained and filled into borosilicate ampoules without further treatment. Homogeneity of the materials was tested and no heterogeneity was detected for two of the materials, whereas minor heterogeneity was observed for the third material. Stability of the materials was tested for 8-12 months at 60 °C and no degradation was observed. Characterisation was based on isotope-dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS) applied as primary method of measurement by three European metrology institutes and certified values were assigned using all results. The certified uncertainties include contributions of (potential) heterogeneity, potential degradation as well as characterisation. The final assigned values are:
ERM-EF211: 48.8 ± 1.7 mg/kg
ERM-EF212: 20.2 ± 1.1 mg/kg
ERM-EF213: 9.1 ± 0.8 mg/kg
The materials are available from IRMM (ERM-EF211), LGC (ERM-EF212) and BAM (ERMEF213)
Lead (Pb) isotope amount ratios are commonly used in applications ranging from archaeology and forensic sciences to terrestrial and extra-terrestrial geochemistry. Despite their utility and frequency of use, only three certified isotope amount ratio reference materials are currently available for Pb: NIST SRMs 981, 982 and 983. Because SRM 981 has a natural Pb isotopic composition, it is mainly used for correcting instrumental mass discrimination or fractionation. This means that, at present, there are no other certified isotope reference materials with natural Pb isotopic composition that could be used for validating or verifying an analytical procedure involving the measurement of Pb isotope amount ratios.
To fill this gap, two new reference materials, both certified for their Pb isotopic composition, have been produced together with a complete uncertainty assessment. These new reference materials offer SI traceability and an independent means of validating or verifying analytical procedures used to produce Pb isotope amount ratio measurements.
ERM-EB400 is a bronze material containing a nominal Pb mass fraction of 45 mg/kg. ERM-AE142 is a high purity solution of Pb with a nominal mass fraction of 100 mg/kg. Both materials have been specifically produced to assist analysts in verifying or validating their analytical procedures. Note that while one of these reference materials requires the chemical separation of Pb from its matrix (ERM-EB400), the other does not (ERM-AE142). Details on the certification of these isotope reference materials are provided in this report.
Certification report for the reference materials ERM-AE102a, -AE104a, -AE120, -AE121 and -AE122
(2010)
Isotope reference materials are essential to enable reliable and comparable isotope data. Besides the correction of mass fractionation or mass discrimination isotope reference materials are indispensible for validation and quality control of analytical procedures. This article describes the production and certification of a set of five isotope reference materials ERM-AE102a, 104a, AE120, 121 and 122, for boron isotope analysis. The isotopic composition of all materials has been adjusted by mixing boron mother solutions enriched in 10B or 11B with a boron mother solution having natural-like isotopic composition under full gravimetric control. All mother solutions have been analysed for their boron mass fraction as well as their boron isotopic composition by TIMS using IDMS as calibration technique. For all five reference materials the isotopic composition obtained on the basis of the gravimetric data agrees very well with the isotopic composition obtained from different TIMS techniques. Performed stability and homogeneity studies show no significant influence on the isotopic composition as well as on the related uncertainties.
The certified isotope abundances for 10B are 0.29995 (27) for ERM-AE102a and 0.31488 (28) for ERM-AE104a. The certified δ11B values are -20.2 (6) ‰ for ERM-AE120, 19.9(6) ‰ for ERM-AE121 and 39.7 (6) ‰ for ERM-AE122.
Together with the formerly certified ERM-AE101 and -AE103 a unique set of seven certified reference materials (CRM) for boron isotope analysis is now available from BAM.
Isotope reference materials are essential to enable reliable and comparable isotope data. Besides the correction of mass fractionation or mass discrimination, isotope reference materials are indispensible for validation and quality control of analytical procedures. This report describes the production and certification of two isotope reference materials, ERM-AE123 and ERM-AE124, for boron isotope analysis. The isotopic composition of ERM-AE123 is the unaltered natural-like isotopic composition of the base material. The isotopic composition of ERM-AE124 has been adjusted by mixing two boron stock solutions enriched in 10B and 11B respectively under full gravimetric control. All stock solutions have been prepared fully under gravimetrical control. The corresponding boron isotopic composition has been analysed by TIMS. For both reference materials the isotopic composition obtained on the basis of the gravimetric data agrees very well with the isotopic composition obtained by TIMS. The certified isotope abundances for 10B are 0.19832 (21) for ERM-AE123 and 0.96006 (6) for ERM-AE124. Together with the formerly certified ERM-AE101, -AE102a, -AE103, -AE104a, -AE120, -AE121 and AE122, a unique set of nine certified reference materials (CRM) for boron isotope analysis is now available from BAM covering a range for the 10B isotope amount fraction from 0.2 to 0.96 and for the δ11B value from -20 ‰ to +40 ‰.
Isotope dilution mass spectrometry often is applied for the quantification of platinum group elements in environmental and geological samples. In most cases, however, certified spike solutions offering complete uncertainty statements and SI-traceability are missing. This report describes the production and certification of two isotope reference materials, ERM-AE140 and ERM-AE141, serving as calibrated spike solutions for IDMS based quantification of Pd and Pt, respectively. Both materials were produced by dissolving highly enriched isotopes 106Pd and 194Pt and determining the mass fraction of 106Pd and 194Pt in the final solution by reverse IDMS. Two independent back-spikes were produced for each material from high purity Pd and Pt. Characterization measurements were carried out by MC-ICPMS. For ERM-AE140 the certified mass fractions are w(106Pd) = 20.24(5) mg/kg and w(Pd) = 20.54(5) mg/kg. For ERM-AE141 the certified mass fractions are w(194Pt) = 18.18(11) mg/kg and w(Pt) = 19.90(12) mg/kg. These values are traceable to the International System of Units (SI) in the shortest possible way.

The classification of solid oxidizers according to the regulations on the transport of dangerous goods (based on the UN Recommendations/Model Regulations and accepted by all international organisations for the transport of dangerous goods as ADR, IMO, IATA) and in future also according to the GHS (Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals) is performed on the basis of the results of the UN test O.1 (UN test O.1 ―Test for oxidizing solids‖ described in chapter 34.4.1 in the Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods – Manual of Tests and Criteria, see [1]). This test was introduced into the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria in 1995 as a replacement for a similar test from 1986. Even if the UN O.1 test as described in the current 5th revised edition of UN Manual of Tests and Criteria gives some improvements compared to the old test, which had had many deficiencies, there are still some problems left with this test in terms of e.g. repeatability or reproducibility of test results, how to handle compacted or multilayer formulations like tablets, toxicity and partly significantly varying particle size distribution within defined fractions of 150 μm to 300 μm of the reference oxidizer potassium bromate (KBrO3). For this reason the IGUS EOS working group installed an ad-hoc working group in 2002 assigned with the task to propose solutions for the existing problems. The appropriateness of such proposed solutions has to be proved by the method of interlaboratory (round robin) tests before they are presented for the adoption to the UN Committee of Experts on the TDG and on the GHS with a proposal of a completely revised test procedure.
For the classification and safe handling and use of the chemicals, special standardized testing proce-dures have been developed and are used world-wide. Safety experts must be able to fully rely on the precise execution of the respective laboratory tests and assessments. In this context interlaboratory tests (round robin tests, interlaboratory comparisons / intercomparisons) are a crucial element of a laboratory's quality system. Participation in interlaboratory tests is explicitly recommended by the standard ISO/IEC 17025.
The present document reports on the results of the interlaboratory test 2010/2011 on the test method DIN EN 15188:2007 “Determination of the spontaneous ignition behaviour of dust accumulations” [1] which was organized by the Center for Quality Assurance for Testing of Dangerous Goods and Haz-ardous Substances.
The test method DIN EN 15188:2007 is applied to characterize the self-ignition behaviour of combus-tible dusts. The experimental basis for describing the self-ignition behaviour of a given dust is the de-termination of the self-ignition temperatures (TSI) of differently-sized volumes of the dust sample by isoperibolic hot storage experiments (storage at constant oven temperatures) in commercially availa-ble ovens. The results thus measured reflect the dependence of self-ignition temperatures upon dust volume [1].
Several internal investigations and interlaboratory comparisons in the past have shown significant differences between the lab-specific results of hot storage tests.
Figure 2-1 shows the Pseudo-Arrhenius plot of hot storage tests of eight different laboratories (Round Robin Test 2002, BAM). The dust under this investigation was Lycopodium powder (spores). The par-ticipants of this interlaboratory test used different laboratory ovens (size, ventilation) as well as differ-ent sample baskets (shape, mesh size, single- and double-walled).
Figure 2-1 shows clearly that this test failed to produce reasonable reproducibility of the TSI between the different laboratories. As possible reasons for the deviations have been identified lab-specific dif-ferences, e.g.:
- oven ventilation (enforced, natural convection),
- oven size,
- sample baskets,
- radiation effects,
- measuring precision (temperature difference between tests with ignition and no ignition),
- minimum sample size.
To reduce the differences between the labs it was necessary to ameliorate the testing method and to improve the execution of the method by the lab. From there, the installation of an inner chamber into the laboratory oven was suggested as experimental set-up in EN 15188:2007 to provide more repro-ducible test conditions. The aappropriateness of this set-up has not been verified yet.
The current interlaboratory test 2010-2011 focuses on the use of a special mesh wire screen and spe-cial volumes of the sample baskets (cubes) to normalise/harmonise the test conditions in the different labs. In preparation for the interlaboratory test a joint program between Syngenta and BAM has been initiated in 2009. As a result of these investigations a modified set-up ( chapter 3) has been identi-fied to be probably more appropriate than the suggested set-up in DIN EN-15188:2007.
Due to the time-consuming test procedure and to optimize the workflow for the laboratories this in-terlaboratory test should be performed stepwise as a multi-level test ( chapter 5.4) on one typical test sample.
The test methods UN Test L.2 / EN ISO 9038:2013 DIN EN 15188:2007 are applied to characterize the sustained combustibility of liquids i.e. the behaviour of a material under specified test conditions, whereby its vapour can be ignited by an ignition source and sufficient flammable vapour is produced to continue burning for at least 15 s after the source of ignition has been removed.
The aims of this interlaboratory test (IT) are the verification and/or the improvement (if necessary) of the verification data (reference material) in Annex B of EN ISO 9038:2013, the assessment of influencing (disturbing) factors (laboratory specific factors, which possibly may have an influence on the test result) and the assessment of the performance of the participating laboratories.
It could be demonstrated that the reference materials n-Dodecane, n-Decane and n-Undecane as mentioned in the standard are suitable and the verification shall continue to be valid.
Sustained combustibility tests are influenced by several factors like the presence of a draught shield, the experience of the laboratory assistant, verification of the apparatus, calibration of the metering device.
Based on the interlaboratory test, the gained experience and the actual results, well-founded measures / actions can be recommended to improve execution of the method.
The IT was organized by PTB, BAM and QuoData GmbH in the framework of the co-operation project CEQAT-DGHS Centre for Quality Assurance for Testing of Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Substances.
For the classification, safe handling and use of the chemicals, special standardized testing procedures have been developed and are used worldwide. Safety experts must be able to fully rely on the precise execution of the respective laboratory tests and assessments. In this context, interlaboratory tests are a crucial element of a laboratory's quality system. Participation in interlaboratory tests is explicitly recommended by the standard ISO/IEC 17025.
The present document reports the results of the interlaboratory test 2015-2016, which was performed on the test method DIN EN 15188:2007 “Determination of the spontaneous ignition behaviour of dust accumulations”. It was organized by BAM in the frame of the co-operation project CEQAT-DGHS Centre for Quality Assurance for Testing of Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Substances.
The test method DIN EN 15188:2007 is applied to characterize the self-ignition behaviour of combustible dusts. The experimental basis for describing the self-ignition behaviour of a given dust is the determination of the self-ignition temperatures (TSI) of differently-sized volumes of the dust sample by isoperibolic hot storage experiments (storage at constant oven temperatures) in commercially available ovens. The results measured this way reflect the dependence of the self-ignition temperatures on the volume of a dust accumulation.
The interlaboratory test 2015-2016 on the method DIN EN 15188:2007 is the latest in a systematic stepwise built up series of method validation interlaboratory tests and internal laboratory investigations. The aim of this interlaboratory test was to determine measurement uncertainties of the modified method DIN EN 15188 for different substances, covering a sufficiently wide range of self-ignition behaviours in the scope of the DIN EN 15188 of the four basket test to extrapolate to storage volumes up to 1000 m³ and the single basket test for a basket volume of 1000 cm³.
The precision of the four basket test and the single basket of the modified method DIN EN 15188 can be assessed as acceptable for the four sample materials investigated in the current interlaboratory test 2015-2016. It was possible to derive a functional equation for the measurement uncertainty U depending on the storage volume V. The measurement uncertainty cannot be ignored and must be considered, if TSI results should be used in practice.
For the classification of chemicals, special standardized test procedures have been developed and are used world-wide. Safe handling and use of these chemicals depend on the correct classification which therefore must be based on the precise and correct execution of the tests and their evaluation. In this context interlaboratory tests (round robin tests, interlaboratory comparisons / intercomparisons) are a crucial element of a laboratory's quality system. Participation in interlaboratory tests is explicitly recommended by the standard ISO/IEC 17025.
The present document reports on the results of the interlaboratory test 2009/2010 on the test methods UN O.2 “Test for oxidizing liquids” [1] / EC A.21 “Oxidizing Properties (Liquids)” [2] which was organized by the Center for Quality Assurance for Testing of Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Substances.
The test methods UN O.2 and EC A.21 are applied to characterize the oxidizing properties of liquid chemical substances or mixtures. To differentiate between chemicals with hazardous / dangerous oxidizing properties and chemicals which are not classified as hazardous / dangerous, the substance’s oxidizing properties are compared to those of a standard reference substance.
Since the methods (UN O.2 / EC A.21) were developed and came into force in the early nineties a systematic review concerning the practical application of the test method has not been carried out.
The classification of solid oxidizers according to the GHS (Globally Harmonized System of Classifica-tion and Labelling of Chemicals) and according to regulations on the transport of dangerous goods (based on the UN Recommendations/Model Regulations and implemented in all carrier domains as transport by road, railway, sea, air) is performed on the basis of the results of the UN test O.1 (―Test for oxidizing solids‖ described in chapter 34.4.1 in the Recommendations on the Transport of Danger-ous Goods, Manual of Tests and Criteria, Fifth revised edition, United Nations, New York and Geneva, 2009). This test was introduced into the UN Test Manual in 1995 as a replacement for a similar test from 1986. Even though the O.1 test is much better than the previous one there are still many prob-lems with this test. For this reason the IGUS-EOS working group (international group of experts on the explosion risks of unstable substances – working group: energetic and oxidizing substances) installed an ad-hoc working group in 2002 assigned with the task of proposing solutions for the existing prob-lems. The adequacy of such proposals has to be proven preferably by interlaboratory comparison (interlaboratory test) before they are presented to the UN Sub Committee for adoption into the UN Test Manual. The present report is the evaluation of an interlaboratory test which was designed by the Ad-hoc working group in order to find out whether the current method of comparing combustion times of test mixtures with those of reference mixtures is suitable in principle and whether some approaches for improvement of the method can be identified.
For the safety of prestressed concrete structures, a test of prestressing steel products for hydrogen-induced stress corrosion cracking is mandatory. The current standardized test methods according to DIN EN ISO 15630-3 have proven deficiencies concerning the reproducibility of the results and thus make it difficult to assess the susceptibility clearly. The WIPANO research project funded by BMWK aimed to improve the test method regarding reproducibility and reliability of results. The project created constant and reproducible test conditions by modifying material, electrolyte, and process parameters. This allowed a clear differentiation between good and bad products. As part of the project, a round robin test was initiated to confirm the applicability and reproducibility of the new test method. The new test method was evaluated for its applicability to the prestressing steel product wire. A draft standard with a proposed conformity criterion for these products was submitted to the responsible ISO committee for approval. According to the current feedback from the committee, the draft standard will be included in the informative annex of the testing standard, which could pave the way for mirroring at European and national standardization levels.
This is the final report on the proficiency test (PT) „Measurement of the particle size distribution of ceramic powders by laser diffraction”. The PT was organized by the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM), division 5.5 “Advanced technical ceramics”. The measurements took place from 12/2021 to 03/2022. The aim of the interlaboratory comparison was the proficiency assessment of the participating laboratories.
Management and realization of PT were performed in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17043:2010.
The basis of the harmonized measuring procedure and the instructions for the interlaboratory comparison was the standard ISO 13320:2020.
The statistical analysis was performed in accordance with DIN ISO 13528:2020 by use of the software PROLab Plus (QuoData GmbH, Dresden, Germany).
A group of 44 laboratories from 17 countries participated in the PT. Laser diffraction analyzers produced by 7 different manufacturers were used. The three test materials were commercial products. Overall, the measured characteristic values of the particle distributions (d10, d50 and d90) were in the size range between 0.5 and 25 μm. The final report contains all individual results in an anonymous way.
Flow-back and produced waters from shale gas and shale oil fields contain high ammonium, which can be formed by methanogenic degradation of methylamines into methane and ammonium. Methylamines are added to fracturing fluid to prevent clay swelling or can originate from metabolism of the osmolyte triglycinebetaine (GB).
We analyzed field samples from a shale gas reservoir in the Duvernay Formation and from a shale oil reservoir in the Bakken formation in Canada to determine the origin of high ammonium. Fresh waters used to make fracturing fluid, early flow-back waters, and late flow back waters from the shale gas reservoir had increasing salinity of 0.01, 0.58, and 2.66 Meq of NaCl, respectively. Microbial community analyses reflected this fresh water to saline transition with halophilic taxa including Halomonas, Halanaerobium, and Methanohalophilus being increasingly present. Early and late flow-back waters had high ammonium concentrations of 32 and 15 mM, respectively.
Such high concentrations had also been found in the Bakken produced waters.
Enrichment cultures of Bakken produced waters in medium containing mono, di-, or trimethylamine, or triglycinebetaine (GB) converted these substrates into ammonium (up to 20 mM) and methane. The methylotrophic methanogen Methanohalophilus, which uses methylamines for its energy metabolism and uses GB as an osmolyte, was a dominant community member in these enrichments. Halanaerobium was also a dominant community member that metabolizes GB into trimethylamine, which is then metabolized further by Methanohalophilus. However, the micromolar concentrations of GB measured in shale reservoirs make them an unlikely source for the 1,000-fold higher ammonium concentrations in flow-back waters. This ammonium either originates directly from the reservoir or is formed from methylamines, which originate from the reservoir, or are added during the hydraulic fracturing process. These methylamines are then converted into ammonium and methane by halophilic methylotrophic methanogens, such as Methanohalophilus, present in flow-back waters.

Safety experts must be able to fully rely on the precise execution of the respective laboratory tests and assessments. In this context interlaboratory tests (round robin tests, interlaboratory comparisons / intercomparisons) are a crucial element of both the further development and improvement of the methods and of a laboratory's quality system. Participation in interlaboratory tests is explicitly recommended by the standard ISO/IEC 17025. This document reports on the results of the interlaboratory test 2012-2013 on the test method EN 14522:2005 “Determination of the auto ignition temperature of gases and vapours“ / IEC 60079-201, part 7 ”Method of test for auto-ignition temperature”. The auto ignition temperature is an important safety characteristic for explosion protection and prevention. It is the basis for classifying substances and explosion protected equipment into temperature classes. Because safety characteristic data are not a pure substance constant but a figure which denotes a special property of the substance, the determination methods are standardised. Currently EN 14522 and IEC 60079-20-1, part 7 are under revision with the aim to combine both to a standard accepted worldwide. An important part of the standard is the laboratory’s verification of their apparatus and procedure. To base this forthcoming standard on reliable and up-to-date verification data an interlaboratory test appears as the method of choice. The verification data given in the recent issues of the standards are based on comparison measurements which date back to a long time ago and did not include automated apparatuses.
For the classification of chemicals, special standardized test procedures have been developed and are used world-wide. Safe handling and use of these chemicals depend on the correct classification which
therefore must be based on the precise and correct execution of the tests and their evaluation. In this context interlaboratory tests (round robin tests, interlaboratory comparisons / intercomparisons) are a crucial element of a laboratory's quality system. Participation in interlaboratory tests is explicitly recommended by the standard ISO/IEC 17025. The present document reports on the results of the interlaboratory test 2007 on the method UN Test N.5 “Test method for substances which in contact with water emit flammable gases” [1] / EC A.12 “Flammability (contact with water)” [2] which was organized by the Center for Quality Assurance for Testing of Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Substances.
In dependence on the chemical structure and/or the physical form and state (e.g. particle size) substances or mixtures may be able to react with water (even water damp / air humidity) under normal ambient temperature conditions. Sometimes this reaction can be violent and/or with significant generation of heat. Especially if gases are evolved this reaction may become dangerous. In addition, it is important to know whether a substance emits flammable gases due to contact with water because
special precautions are necessary especially with regard to explosion protection. The methods UN Test N.5 and EC A.12 are applied to characterize chemical substances or mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases. To differentiate between chemicals with these properties and chemicals which are not classified as hazardous / dangerous, the substance’s gas evolution rate is determined and compared to the classification criteria(s) in the last step of the test
method. In the methods UN Test N.5 / EC A.12 no special laboratory apparatus / measuring technique to determine gas evolving flow is required. However, practical experience shows that the testing procedure for substances and mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases is sensitive to a number of influencing factors. Since the methods (UN N.5 / EC A.12) were developed and came into force in the early nineties a
systematic review concerning the practical application of the test method has not been carried out.
