Chemical and electrochemical interaction mechanisms of metal-reducing bacteria with gold surfaces

Bacterial biofilms are considered one of the salient contributing factors to the deterioration of metals and their alloys, occurring in virtually all environments and across various industrial systems. Considering the sheer magnitude of detrimental effects, it is of pertinent interest to elucidate the interaction mechanisms of sessile bacteria with metal and metal oxide surfaces to facilitate the development of efficient antifouling strategies. A common constituent of microbial communities within aquatic and sedimentary settings, the Shewanella genus consists of facultatively aerobic, Gram-negative bacterium which exhibit exceptional plasticity in respiratory capacities. During aerobic conditions, Shewanella utilizes oxygen as a terminal electron acceptor; conversely, under anaerobic conditions, it is able to undertake respiration by reducing alternative terminal electron acceptors such as oxidized metals via extracellular electron transfer mechanisms not yet thoroughly discerned.
The aim of this work is to explicate the mechanisms governing the initial bacterial adhesion and subsequent biofilm formation on metallic surfaces. To investigate this dynamic interplay, a combined approach has been followed which couples surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) with electrochemical techniques using Shewanella sp. model biofilms. Gold nano-islands deposited on thin glass slides have been chosen as inert model substrates with good uniformity and high surface enhancement factor. Furthermore, the utilization of gold as substrate material not only allowed the differentiation of the sole effect of substrate polarization on bacterial attachment but also enabled a precise adjustment of the surface chemistry and surface energy by means of surface functionalization with organothiol self-assembled monolayers.
The results present the correlation of the primary settlement rate of bacteria on metallic substrates with the environmental parameters such as electrolyte composition and pH as well as surface-related properties like hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity and polarization. With the overall strategic goal of transferring this methodology to technical systems the results provide the fundamental basis for the bottom-up design of anti-fouling surfaces.

Der Ersatz von Röntgenfilmen durch digitale Detektoren in der zerstörungsfreien Prüfung wurde in den letzten 10 Jahren kontrovers diskutiert. Nach der Erfolgsgeschichte der digitalen Photographie und der fast vollständigen Ablösung der Filmtechnik in der optischen Bilderfassung wurde erwartet, dass sich der Übergang von der Filmradiographie zur digitalen Radiographie schnell vollziehen sollte. Dieser Trend ist derzeit so noch nicht zu beobachten. Zur mobilen Prüfung wird in Europa immer noch vorrangig die Filmradiographie und nur teilweise die Speicherfolientechnik eingesetzt. Im Bereich der stationären Prüftechnik haben sich die Matrixdetektoren (DDA) weitgehend durchgesetzt, wobei es auch hier noch alternative Detektoren wie Bildverstärker und Fluoroskope gibt. Mit Einführung der DIN EN ISO 17636-2 wird seit 2013 erstmalig geregelt, wie man einen digitalen Detektor für die technische Radiographie auswählen soll, um im Vergleich zur Filmradiographie eine äquivalente Bildqualität zu erhalten. Essentielle Parameter bestimmen, ob die geforderte Bildgüte erreicht werden kann. Es wird ein Überblick gegeben, welche Parameter zum praktischen Einsatz wichtig sind und wie sie ermittelt werden. Erste Erfahrungen im praktischen Einsatz werden diskutiert.
Worldwide BAM Certification of Radigraphic Image Detectors for the NDT Market – Status of 2016

The Poster shows the status of 2016 in BAM certification of radiographic image detectors for industrial radiology for nondestructive testing. BAM was generating first the basis by worldwide standardization activities and released later certificates on request of the device manufacturers using these Standards a base for certification.
In this work, a method for vehicle load identification is proposed. It involves Bayesian
Analysis and (quasi-)static importance functions in order to estimate vehicle positions,
velocities and weights. The structure is modeled with finite elements in order to generate
model predictions for different load configurations. The model predictions are compared to
the actual measured data to identify the most probable loading configuration for that
measurement. This involves the use of enhanced Monte Carlo simulations such as MCMC to
reduce the computational effort.
Several Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes are based on the deposition of a powder to form a powder-bed layer-by-layer which typically has a low packing density (35-50%) and consequently hinders the ability of sintering ceramic parts to full density. The layerwise slurry deposition (LSD) is an innovative process for the deposition of layers in AM. In the LSD, a slurry with no or small organic content is repetitively spread as thin layers on each other by means of a doctor blade. During the deposition, the ceramic particles settle to form thin layers with a high packing density (55-60%). When coupled with a printing head or with a laser, the LSD enables novel AM technologies inspired to the 3D printing or selective laser sintering, but taking advantage of having a highly dense powder-bed. This approach has been successfully applied to silicate ceramics, but implementing technical ceramic slurries is more challenging, because the water is drained too quickly from the suspension into the pores of the previous porous layer. In this presentation, the variables involved in the LSD will be analyzed and the latest improvements in the deposition setup will be described. The application of the LSD to technical ceramics has the potential of generating additive manufacturing parts which in the green state are comparable to those produced by slip casting.

The LSD differentiates from the classical powder-based AM layer deposition, which typically are able to achieve only a low packing density (35-50%), consequently hindering the ability of sintering ceramic parts to full density. The LSD is coupled with the principles of selective laser sintering (SLS) or binder printing, to generate novel processes which take advantage of the possibility of achieving a highly dense powder-bed.
This presentation will describe the most recent developments in the application of the LSD to technical ceramics, in particular Al2O3 and SiC, discussing potential and issues connected to the layer deposition and the selective laser sintering of such layers.
